Watchlist

The Watchlist – Jonny Evans

It’s not been the most straightforward of seasons for United’s Jonny Evans. Four times the centre-half has been sidelined now, with ankle, leg, groin and hamstring problems curtailing his game time over the course of the campaign – as a result, the most he’s managed is six consecutive league starts thus far.

Nevertheless, Evans’ presence in the United back-four has been significant. The league leaders have managed one clean sheet in the 10 games without the Northern Ireland international in their first XI – with Evans in the starting line-up, they have registered five clean sheets in 16 games by comparison.

Factor in three goals, a pair of assists and nine Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points and Evans has racked up 81 points – an average of 4.8 points per game, which is exactly the same as Patrice Evra and superior to Rafael’s 4.1. Indeed, this is joint-top for regular defenders overall, equalling Jose Enrique, with the likes of Leighton Baines and Branislav Ivanovic just behind on 4.6 and 4.4 respectively.

Providing he can now remain injury-free, Evans looks set to be key to Sir Alex Ferguson’s side over the remainder of the season. Over the last few days, the United boss has lavished praise upon the centre-half and suggested Evans’ game will continue to develop with the aid of regular appearances. Ferguson hinted that a fully-fit Evans is likely to afford him the chance to alternate Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand at centre-half as United also juggle FA Cup and Champions League commitments.

“Jonny is only 25 but he’s emerged in the last year as a real top defender. His form has been fantastic. If you can get consistency off young players you are on the right track and Jonny has shown great consistency in the last year. Last season it wasn’t until Ferdinand and Evans played regularly that we got a run going.”

Considering United’s midfield have failed to step up as Fantasy options this season, investment in defence could well appeal ahead of a run of games which affords the chance to consolidate their 12 point lead at the summit. Norwich and Reading roll up to Old Trafford over the next five and with trips to QPR, West Ham and Sunderland also on their agenda, faith in their Fantasy assets could extend beyond their free-scoring frontmen.

Coming in at 5.6 in FPL and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game, Evans is significantly cheaper than Evra’s 7.3 in FPL and also sets you back less than Rafael, at 6.0. An ownership of 1% offers a real differential route into a backline that has now registered four back-to-back clean sheets with the centre-half in their ranks – an indication of just why Ferguson sees Evans’ contribution as crucial to his side’s chances of wrestling back the title from City.

Best 5th midfield...I'm planning Gerrard -> someone like Tarrabat this week and then Flecther to Aguero the following. Does mean going without Fellani but I could easily get him in for Michu for the DGW

RVP has specifically asked to play. I think he has a clause in his contract that means SAF has to do everything he can to help him get the Golden Boot.

Well, took a gamble and already made transfers the other day before price rises & to field 11.

Davies, Puncheon, Suarez ----out for----> Harte, Bale, Lambert. (-4 points)

Now have a front 8 of:
    Bale Mata Michu Fellaini Walcott
    RVP Sturridge Lambert

Sad to lose Suarez but its either that or have both Sturridge & Suarez, as I think Sturridge is fantastic value and shouldn't be overlooked.

First time I've owned Bale, so he will now go on a horrendous run of 2 and 3 pointers!!!

Really stuck on what transfers to make this week, got 2FT and 0.3 in the bank.

    De Gea (Bunn)

    *Davies* Zab Turner Dawson Bertrand

    Bale *Michu* Punch Mata Guthrie

    RVP *Saurez* *Sturridge*

Was thinking maybe Sturridge > Lambert, Davies > J.Evans but then I'll have to play Guthrie which I'd rather avoid. Anyone offer any advice?

Now I look at it's actually a 4-4-2, but both transfers are defenders.

The way I see it I'm perfectly happy keeping Michu, Suarez, Surridge and Davies despite the blank (shifted GJ). They are all in reasonable nick, with a good fixtures and offer good value. I've got enough accrued value in Suarez that I don't see the point in rolling the dice with Aguero (I also have reservations about how City will react to having essentially blown it), I can't quite afford Sturridge to Cisse (and I'm not sure I'd want to do it anyway) and I don't see much value in a one week punt on someone like Giroud.

I don't want Johnson long term so he's gone, and I need to do Bertrand to Wilson at some point so why not this week when there's nothing else I see as pressing? It'll probably mean losing a bit of rank this week but it puts my whole squad in good nick for the run in and leaves me lots of options either for Suarez or Sturridge as events dictate.

Interesting, well I agree with you about not prioritising your rank this week. Many times in this game you have to take 2 steps back to take 3 steps forward. I think a lot of people are in the same boat this week and will struggle to field XI or not be content with their full XI and how they are restricted. But it's only one GW and will likely not define your season. If you decide to not knee-jerk and avoid hits or doing something drastic that might be the best thing for GW28...as opposed to this GW coming. Good luck!

    Alright chaps!

    Federici
    Turner Clyne Demel* GJ* Davies*
    Bale Mata Walcott Puncheon Michu*
    RVP Berbatov Suarez*

    1FT, 0.0 in the bank

I'm thinking GJ and Suarez to Evans and Aguero for a 4 point hit. This means I can put out 11 even if Demel doesn't play.

I can't afford to just do Suarez to Aguero.

Reckon I should take the hit?

An 8 point hit would allow me to do:

    Johnson, Michu and Sturridge OUT
    Evans, Sissoko and Aguero IN

Worth it? Have to take at least a 4 point hit to get 11 out..

I can't justify the extra 4 point hit for a defender-wouldn't you be happy with '4 points' then you are only really missing out on a faint possibility of goal/assist/bp's-too big a risk imo.

Having said that if at some stage you are planning to get Evans in and it will cost you 4 points anyway then yes go ahead.

    JEvans - Dawson - Clyne - Pearce
    Bale - Walcott (C) - Mata - Guthrie
    RVP (VC) - Lambert

Bench: JCesar - Suarez - Michu - BDavies

Benteke. On form. On penalties. Main man for his team. Great goal involvement %. Cisse is the opposite. It's just a wish that he will start hitting form. Not for me. Given his record in years prior and this season, I'm tempted to believe that the second part of last year was a fluke.

        @ Pepin re Cisse

His record in previous seasons? His record in Germany was awesome. He was averaging 1 goal in every 4/5 shots before this season (from last season in france to now).

His conversion rate of shots on target to goals was 50% and if he had the same conversion this year he would be sitting on 9/10 goals so far. 9 of his 19 attemps on target have come in his Last 6 gw's (no coincidence that is has happened since ba has left imo) so if you want to extrapolate that out for the run in he could be looking at a rather decent 8-9 goals more between now and the end of the season imo.

see link here for figures http://espnfc.com/player/_/id/101423/papiss-demba-cisse?cc=5739

ps I don't know why I am bothering going to this trouble getting figures etc as the page will probably be turned by the time I post so nobody will see them 🙁

interesting point you raise - when SAF rests RVP or when mata/kun get rested because of champions league, poeple will hardly say its disrespectfull, but if Swans are one game away from adding a very rare silverware to tehir cabinet, can you really blame them for making sure 2-3 top players will be available?

Swansea themselves were competing with Liverpool for a European spot based on league form, they were ahead of them going in to yesterdays match.

Thats why it makes even less sense I suppose. Have to beat Bradford to get that European place now you'd think.

Perhaps he was basing his team selection on the performance his team put in at Anfield in the Capital One Cup earlier this season? Weakened team went and won 3-1. Might not have figured that Rodgers would put out a full team also after the tough week they've had/have coming up.

The crazy thing is, looking at the table before the game you could have legitimately talked about Swansea as being one of those sides.

Besides, a week away from the match wouldn't you rather keep up match fitness and possibly even gain a psychological boost from getting a result?

            Odd decision.

You could argue that Swansea would win the final without Michu, Williams etc anyway.

Even when they were behind was there no temptation to improve the side?

TBH, not sure teh strong swans side could win the game yesterday - pool had one of those rare days where they flow all over - maybe a 3-1 is better than 5-0 but hardly worth a risk.

If Suarez drop tonight, which I personally think he will, should I go ahead with my planned Suarez > Aguero move.

Looking to get Sturridge for the Pog the week after.
