The Watchlist – Simon Mignolet

Top scoring keeper in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings with 103 points, Simon Mignolet is afforded further opportunity to boost his tally over the next few matches. A run of games which sees Sunderland square up to West Brom, Fulham, QPR and Norwich all hold plenty appeal before the schedule turns nasty for Martin O’Neill’s side in Gameweek 31:

The Belgian heads to the Hawthorns on Saturday on the back of a run of games which has harvested 43 points in his previous nine matches; just under five points per game. While this has included four clean sheets – against Southampton, City, West Ham and Swansea – Mignolet’s save points have also been crucial to his Fantasy prospects. So far, he has made 105 saves, eight more than any other keeper, and has picked up three points against Spurs and Liverpool and four points against Arsenal over the previous nine, despite conceding in each of those fixtures. As a result, he sits six points ahead of Joe Hart in the standings, despite registering two clean sheets less (nine to 11) than the City stopper.

Mignolet’s propensity to pick up save points is crucial to his appeal over alternative Sunderland assets. With regular full-backs Craig Gardner and Danny Rose both classified as midfielders in FPL, the choice is pretty limited – John O’Shea has chipped in with a goal and pair of assists this season but remains almost 30 points behind his keeper. Carlos Cuellar, at 4.4, is a cut-price option but continues to be plagued with a hamstring injury – he was an unused sub against Arsenal last time out, with O’Neill clearly keen to ease him back to action. This leaves Titus Bramble as an alternative but with new boy Kader Mangane building up match fitness, too many question marks currently hang over the centre-half positions, boosting Mignolet’s appeal further.

Coming in at 5.4 in FPL and just 4.4 in the Sky Sports game, Mignolet’s heroics suggest he could be utilised as a one-stop keeper option from here on in, though he could also offer a superb rotation partner with Newcastle’s Tim Krul. Such a scenario would present us with a superb run of home games (SOT, FUL, STO, NOR, MUN, FUL, SUN) over the next seven Gameweeks for those with budget to spare.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Lost on the last post, and I like these TV discussions...

Missed out on the TV discussion earlier, so here’s my 2 cents.

In terms of drama, The Wire stands out above everything else as the greatest show I’ve ever seen. Then, just below, I’d have:

    The Sopranos
    Six Feet Under
    Breaking Bad
    Deadwood

    For comedy shows, I’d go:

    The Office (original of course)
    The Simpsons (specifically seasons 3-8)
    I’m Alan Partridge
    Peep Show
Brass Eye and The Day Today
    Arrested Development
    Curb Your Enthusiasm
    Seinfeld
    The Larry Sanders Show
    Extras

Well if we're playing that game I'll repost my reply...!

An excellent list and I wouldn’t disagree with any of those, although as is always the case I could easily add the same number of shows again and still have more I wish I could put on!

List was looking good until you started on the comedies...

The Office (original of course) - Rubbish
The Simpsons (specifically seasons 3-8) - Good
      I’m Alan Partridge - Rubbish
      Peep Show - Total garbage
Brass Eye and The Day Today - Meh
      Arrested Development - Rubbish
      Curb Your Enthusiasm - Meh
      Seinfeld - Rubbish
The Larry Sanders Show - Never seen it

People Like Us was a spoof fly on the wall series whereby the inept presenter spent a day with a different 'person like us' each episode - Teacher, Policeman, etc. It's probably about 15 years old now but very cleverly done. Chris Langham was the man behind it I believe.

I never got on with M*A*S*H but I think I was probably a bit too young for it when I tried it, and then never bothered going back, I'll give it a go next time it pops up on a streaming service.

So FUML_AKIMBO just introduced me to the monthly rankings. Did not know about it. Go to the overall rankings page and filter by month. And check your rankings for every month(bottom of overall page, once you filter), just to see how your season has been so far. This is me. Fairly interesting.

    Aug- 3039
    Sep- 237,573
    Oct- 12,634
    Nov- 276,605
    Dec- 9661
    Jan- 114 😀
    Feb- 107,317

Dec/Jan i am assuming is a period to climb up the rankings for most regulars with good use of wc and playing the condensed fixtures well. If you could, just check your Dec/Jan ranking. I'd bet it was fairly good for most of us.

lets talk about RVP (lets talk about you and me, lets talk about all the good things....etc.)

i sold him for suarez (worked ok i guess) and now i have the money to bring him back, but:

gw27 – playing away to QPR – could be huge, but could be a very dull 0-0 after QPR parking a gigantinc bus.
Gw28 – probably rested for the madrid game a few days later – shame cause norwich can be a great game for him.
    gw29 – potential blank – who knows
after gw30 – title probably close to being locked, and if they advance in CL he is likely to get a rest every 2-3 games.

    thoughts?

Suarez -> Giroud is what I really want to do. Although that may leave me in one hell of a mess for the blank (already have Aguero though, fancy him to go on a run, but I've thought that for quite a while).

QPR's bus marking is part myth....the stats show they have been very lucky and conceded the most number of shots in the box in recent weeks. A true parking the bus side would not concede that many shots.

I ask myself who is the best forward int he Premier League and which team has conceded the most shots in the box in the last few weeks and that equals RVP (C) for me.

Have 10 players for the weekend, including Kebe. Have already done Bale in for Gerrard.
I have Davies, Michu, Suarez and Sturridge.

    What to do?
    A. Davies - spending points on defender not cool
    B. Michu - still seem to be doing a good job - would lose a lot of value too
    C. Suarez - in for 9.4, and is still producing
    D. Sturridge - seem to be good value
    E. Leave it as is

I hear you. I have a similar dilemma that points to which formation I go with.

      Cisse -> 343
      Pog -> 352

Currently have Pog and Power 5, but unsure of the way forward right now.

I really like the forward 3 of RVP-Aguero-Sturridge which points me towards 343 wuth Felliani probably making way. Gonna give it a couple og GW's to let the players decide for me based on form.

I swapped Sturridge for Pog to get Bale in. Regretting that now, should've dumped Suarez, but he's just so hard to get rid of due to value and form.

I guess you're right, it can't all be completely timeless...but subjectively to the individual it can...I don't think I'll ever not find the Holy grail unbelievably hilarious for example

Agree with RONH earlier re Wenger.

Given Arsenal's Champions League status for such a long time and long term secure revenue from their new stadium they really should have done better.

Wenger failed to buy last year and his former players winning a combined 53 trophies at other clubs since leaving over the last eight years hardly fills potential recruits with hope. Arsenal have also been overpaying poor and average squad players which has effected their ability to invest in genuine talent.

I look at Newcastle's captures of Cabaye, Sissoko, Tiote, Ba and Cisse even as well as Swansea's purchase of Michu and compare it to Arsenal's signings for more money... and despair at what's happening.

Maybe these decisions are the board's, maybe Wengers, maybe both...but what's clear is that either he isn't strong enough to stand up to poor decisions or he is behind them.

SAF's strength has been to recreate teams over and again. Even Pardew is better at doing that than Wenger.

    Wenger has to leave.

We don't actually know the reason he's not bought more players. He has proven in the past that he can and does develope top youth. I think he problem has actually been retention of his best players.

If they could have kept song, fab then we would be seeing a very good team. I think that the best and worse thing about arsenal is there wage structure. It stands up to ridiculous demands but fails to keep the best an attract the best. That's not Wengers fault that's the board. Walcott saga is a perfect example. If they had lost him as well arsenal would have real problems.

I'd argue that if a man like Wenger after all these years doesn't have any influence over the wage structure then surely he is not the right man for the job. Would SAF lie down and be tickled quite so easily?

Maybe Wenger is an advocate of a sensible wage structure refusing to pander to crazy wage increases which has the potential to bankcrupt a club. If your using Man U then you only need to look at the balance sheet to see that that is not a sustainable model regardless of winning cups. At some point it will ineveitably end up biting those overspending clubs in the ass.

I argued slightly tongue in cheek that Steve Bruce had got far more out of Seb Larsson than Wenger had, proving that Wenger was a poorer man manager. I was heavily abused.. it didn't get past wise old posters at the time like AP and DBRonaldo though.

On this though I mean it. For a club of Arsenal's status with a constant manager for all these years they really should be doing better. If they don't get Champs League status this year then wenger's last remaining argument is lost.

Oh dear, I respect your argument Jonty. I really do. But I can't accept that Pardew is doing better than Wenger. I cannot accept that!

Cabaye, Ba, Tiote and Cisse were great buys, no doubt. BUT this season has been a shambles for the most part. Ok they have had injuries...but when one of them goes missing or is played out of position etc they look appalling! And that's Pardew's fault imo...he can't adapt.

And to praise him for his work in the transfer market over Wengers...Newcastle have only showed signs of a revival in the last 3 matches...before the Sissoko revolution they were frankly rubbish all season. Without Ba they'd be where QPR are right now imo.

P.s Disagree that Wenger has to leave!

I also believe it isn't Pardew bringing these French guys in, it's their scouting system that is solely based in France apparently. And who came up with the idea of scouting in the French league for bargains in the first place? WENGER!

But each transfer window Newcastle improve on a fare more limited budget than Arsenal's.

Cazorla was a great catch, but while Giroud, Podolski, Mertesecker are good players they are not Champs League quality. Wenger has lost his magic touch and has been losing it for eight years now. Getting beaten by Birmingham in the Carling Cup final shows how poor a judge of character he is.

Disagree, I think Pod is definitely champions league quality. Giroud too...but maybe not semi final/final type quality if there is such a thing so fair enough.

He has lost his magic touch a bit I'll admit, which is to say he is no longer getting lucky along with being shrewd. Their luck has completely run out in fact generally this year.

But I do feel sorry for them as a club, They're now 4th in line behind Chelsea, City and United and that's the reality. But in fairness...while they lost 3-1 and it looks all but over, they're still in it! unlike Chelsea/City.

And the funny thing is Chelsea and arguably City are basically out of the title race now. Which shows how outrageous things have gotten since Wenger was top of the pile with the invincibles.

But let's not forget, Liverpool are in a much worse position than Arsenal in many ways despite winning some trophies more recently. They've all but disappeared as a champions league force. But no-one calls them out or their manager out for not achieving silverware etc...because their success was more recent. But they messed things up a lot. Silverware isn't everything!

With Arsenal's limited budget and unwillingness to spend on top talent - i think David Moyes is probably the most qualified candidate if Wenger does go...

I'd agree with this. I hope he steps down gracefully as he deserves a huge amount of respect for what he's done at the club.

Everyone's time comes to an end in football. It's the nature of the game.

I am not sure about Pelegrini but Wenger needs to go. He showed all he knows
