Watchlist

The Watchlist – Simon Mignolet

Top scoring keeper in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings with 103 points, Simon Mignolet is afforded further opportunity to boost his tally over the next few matches. A run of games which sees Sunderland square up to West Brom, Fulham, QPR and Norwich all hold plenty appeal before the schedule turns nasty for Martin O’Neill’s side in Gameweek 31:

The Belgian heads to the Hawthorns on Saturday on the back of a run of games which has harvested 43 points in his previous nine matches; just under five points per game. While this has included four clean sheets – against Southampton, City, West Ham and Swansea – Mignolet’s save points have also been crucial to his Fantasy prospects. So far, he has made 105 saves, eight more than any other keeper, and has picked up three points against Spurs and Liverpool and four points against Arsenal over the previous nine, despite conceding in each of those fixtures. As a result, he sits six points ahead of Joe Hart in the standings, despite registering two clean sheets less (nine to 11) than the City stopper.

Mignolet’s propensity to pick up save points is crucial to his appeal over alternative Sunderland assets. With regular full-backs Craig Gardner and Danny Rose both classified as midfielders in FPL, the choice is pretty limited – John O’Shea has chipped in with a goal and pair of assists this season but remains almost 30 points behind his keeper. Carlos Cuellar, at 4.4, is a cut-price option but continues to be plagued with a hamstring injury – he was an unused sub against Arsenal last time out, with O’Neill clearly keen to ease him back to action. This leaves Titus Bramble as an alternative but with new boy Kader Mangane building up match fitness, too many question marks currently hang over the centre-half positions, boosting Mignolet’s appeal further.

Coming in at 5.4 in FPL and just 4.4 in the Sky Sports game, Mignolet’s heroics suggest he could be utilised as a one-stop keeper option from here on in, though he could also offer a superb rotation partner with Newcastle’s Tim Krul. Such a scenario would present us with a superb run of home games (SOT, FUL, STO, NOR, MUN, FUL, SUN) over the next seven Gameweeks for those with budget to spare.

Play Fabio for 0 pts or take a -4 hit to get in a 4.2 def? Thinking of playing just 10, and maybe getting in Wilson next week for Fabio

Fabio doesn't play so you can't play him end of. His fixtures could provide some returns in the future. 10 players is not as bad as it seems.

Suggestions as to what to do with my team this week would be good, only fielding 10 at the moment (9 if Guthrie doesn't play)...

    De Gea
    Clichy Demel Pearce
    Mata Walcott (vc) Fellaini Guthrie
    RVP (c) Aguero

    Federici Michu Sturridge Enrique Davies

    1FT, 0.0 in the bank...

    Foster (Begovic)
    Azpi Shaw Demel (Johnson Davies)
    Fellaini Walcott Bale Puncheon (Michu)
    RVP Berba (Sturridge)

Don't really want to get rid of Michu or Sturridge tbh. Puncheon and Johnson to Sissoko and Santon (-4)??

The transfer you suggest would leave you with a rather confused front 8 to my mind, you're neither set up to play 3-4-3 nor 3-5-2, what with Newcastle's decent run you're not going to want to bench Sissoko very often and that leaves Berba on the bench quite a lot - so what's the point in having him?

I'd be inclined to keep Puncheon if I were sticking to a 3-4-3 and either do something like Johnson to Wilson and Berba to Cisse, or (more probably) just do Johnson to either Evans or Wilson - and make a decision on Berba later.

I see what you mean, but Berba will be going eventually, when I get round to it and when I actually want someone for him (likely Benteke in GW29 if Fulham have the blank, if not soon after).

Happy to bench Berba next week @ Sunderland and by then we'll see what's happening with blanks/doubles etc.

I would be getting rid of Fellaini but for his next 2 fixtures, I'll downgrade him eventually (GW29 if blank) to a Puncheon/Maloney.

To me that seems a rather roundabout and inefficient way of doing Fellaini to Sissoko and Berba to Benteke, but perhaps we play with somewhat different styles.

It sort of is, I suppose.

I could just do Fellaini out for Sissoko now instead of Puncheon but then I miss out on Fellaini's next 2 which could be pretty fruitful for him.

I'm hoping me wanting rid of Fellaini GW29ish occurs at the same time as a blank and Fellaini getting his 2 game ban shortly afterwards.

I'd leave it, personally I think QPR will get a goal this weekend anyways.

It's a tough one with Utd coz with their fixtures, you'd want 3 of them but with rotation/lack of midfield options its tough.

Maybe if they go out of the CL, I'll get more in, atm I've just got Robin.

I don't really think the rotation problem is that bad. If I have a player rested then so be it - I back them to play most games still.

I am very worried however about not being able to field 11 players in gameweek 29. I can't see anything else than both the Eve v Ars and Ful v Che game being called off as well, which really isn't great if I get another United player and that one is off.

It's more that despite them being 12 points clear, there's not that many FF options! No viable option in the midfield at all imo.

I'm not a huge fan of doubling up defensively so its RVP + Evans/De Gea/Rafael.

Likelihood is with the cancellations is that the one game I've got no players in (City) is the one that will go ahead. I'd quite like them all off tbh!

Honestly, ive been thinking about this, and believe it or not im really tempted to go with neither.

They have decent fixtures coming up, they aren't going to miss much if anything due to rotation, they dont have blanks beyond wk27 which a lot of the alternatives probably do (RVP, Rooney, Aguero all look like they might miss out).

Im seriously considering using my free transfer to ship out Davies for a defender who should do well in the forthcoming weeks and not miss wk29.

Barney Ronay from the Guardian on Jack Wilshere just now. Brilliantly put:

I think Wilshere is a really good player. I wasn't totally sure what to expect after his injury. But against Brazil and last night it was clear that he is above all a brave player, totally unafraid in possession, with a lovely gift for short passing and for bursting into space.

He's not Gazza, who could do anything, and was a dribbler, a goalscorer, a header, a free-kick maestro and a real physical specimen in his prime. But Wilshere is subtle and intelligent and always on the point. He will affect and decide matches. He is also in no way the problem, just an excellent footballer who should be just left to get on with being quite good, worthy of most teams and always fun to watch.

you want to get rid of Suarez?
I have him, but im more concerned with Van Persie.

I think the fact you've identified only one player who hasn't really played very well this season for your tired striker spot speaks volumes and hence you should pile that money into your midfield. 3-5-2 with the pog.

I have to say that I think RVP being rested is a myth that will never materialise. Ferguson wants the league back and he knows having RVP up front will give him the best shot.

RVP doesn't want to be rested so at most I can see him missing one or two games if fixture congestion starts to bite.

Just read on one of the posts in previous pages (I think from Granville) that if billionaire owners had not taken over at Chelsea and Man City, then Arsenal would still be in trophies mix and even challenging United...

One of the part owners of Arsenal is also a billionaire, so why is it that only Chelsea and Man City are being targeted... It's not like Arsenal do not have the funds to buy big proven players... They just do not want to...

With Arsenal's history if they bid the same amount of money as Chelsea for a proven player (and give him the same wages), dont you think that the player would choose Arsenal over Chelsea every time?

Sometimes you got to be passionate about the club and not look at the bottom line everytime...

the problem is the manager - it is simple as that

      1) Tactically vacant
      2) Incapable of motivating players
      3) Incapable of developing players
      4) Incapable of handling the media
      5) Sport science methods that gave him the edge in the 90s are no ubiquitous

Bayern have a smaller wage bill. Says it all.

I don't know if I agree that a player would choose Arsenal over Chelsea. And that's where Wenger's problems arise from. His own players have even been choosing Chelsea and City over Arsenal. If the players they nurtured had stayed with Arsenal then perhaps there would be a move level playing field. Unfortunately the great talents that Wenger has found have moved on because they want instant success but forgetting that if they stayed they could build a successful team together. It's impatience and a sign of the times.

There are choosing Chelsea over Arsenal because of the wages. This then becomes self perpetuating as more and more players want to go to Chelsea not just for the wages but also because they'll be with better players.

Makele was one of the great midfielders of his generation: wouldn't see him racking up the points in FPL.

Very position dependent. Arsenal have a lot of attacking flair.

That's why they came up with the idea of bonus points. Then they completely ruined it by basing it on flawed stats in a flawed algorithm which just comes up with the same players who have scored goals.

Everton lost Arteta, Cahill & Lescott.

They are a better team now.

    Interesting when compared to Arsenal.

Did Cahill not score about 20 goals this season before he left?

        Lescott was their best CB.

Where on earth does it say that?! (If it does it's nonsense)

Taken from the link you supplied: "Following his participation in the 2011 Asian Cup, Cahill had the longest goal drought in his career. He scored his last league goal in December 2010 away to Manchester City and went the whole of 2011 without finding the net. The run stretched to 34 games, but was finally ended when he scored the opening goal, a tap in from close range, in a 1–1 draw with Blackburn Rovers in January 2012."

8 years without a trophy with a budget even the size of arsenals (not to mention the tradition and reputation of the club) is a scandal

If Wenger wont walk, and the club wont sack him - they are taking the absolute mick out of the fans

It WOULD NOT happen at United. Gauranteed.

              Gauranteed?? learn to spell mate.

It did happen at Man Utd with Ferguson for his first 5 years at Utd. Get your facts right son.

Plus actually try and go to a Man Utd game.

That could actually be a good move. But wenger can still be good if he behaves less stubborn and gets a few WC players to the club while retaining improtant assets this summer.

No Utd cover. To get Rooney or not? The possible rotation against Norwich and the possible blank in GW 29 is playing on my mind.

Thinking abt the same. I fancy him but wait until friday's presser will know more abt his virus which kept him out of the FA cup tie. Overall id fancy him but the possible blank means u shud probably steer clear for now.

This isn't really aiding me in my quest to reel you in, but I think you should have United players. Look at how many they score.

I know and it was the plan to do Suarez > Rooney but Rooney/RVP could potentially have:

        QPR, Blank, Blank.

Granville made a post yesterday saying he thinks it's unlikely UEFA will let Utd play midweek (GW29) as it would take away viewing figures.

Yeah I had another West Ham fan tell me that the consensus on their forums are that the game will be off. Apparently it's a game that was supposed to be televised by Sky, so they might try and interfere too to not have it moved to a date they already have other games.

I reckon Rooney will play both against QPR and Norwich now he got his rest this weekend. He's better when he plays a lot, I think RVP is the one to be rested against Norwich.

Yeah i think I'll end up getting Rooney, still think he'll be the one to be rested against Norwich though. 🙁

Aye of course, if you have one of them, you keep them. Question is, do you bring one in if you have neither!

With the rotation and GW29 blank I'd say no, but after that you will need him or RVP. So be very dependant on your future transfer plan whether to bring him in now or after.
