Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Shinji Kagawa

Arriving from Borussia Dortmund early last summer, Shinji Kagawa looked primed to become a key midfield target for the 2012/13 season. Having helped steer Jurgen Klopp’s side to the title in his final year in the Bundesliga, the Japan international’s displays in the role in “the hole” suggested United were set to shift formation to 4-2-3-1 and hand him a place behind Wayne Rooney as Sir Alex Ferguson attempted to wrestle the title back from City:

Three days before their Gameweek 1 opener at Everton, however, the acquisition of Robin Van Persie turned the Fantasy landscape on its head and made a significant dent in Kagawa’s prospects. While the Dutchman ran riot and grabbed the goals that recaptured the crown, the former Dortmund man struggled to settle in his debut season, with a knee injury and occasional game time on the left flank limiting his potential in what proved to be Ferguson’s final term in charge at Old Trafford.

Key Factors

  • Wayne Rooney’s decision to hand in a transfer request towards the end of last season looks key to Kagawa’s prospects. Omitted from the United squad for the final couple of league games under Ferguson, Rooney seems determined to leave after a lacklustre campaign – having dropped deeper to accommodate Van Persie, his possible departure would free up Kagawa’s preferred position in “the hole” and afford him the chance to slot in behind Van Persie.

  • New manager David Moyes’ penchant for a lone striker system may also be advantageous. While it’s all too early to ascertain just what sort of formation the former Everton boss has in mind as he takes the Old Trafford reins, his use of Marouane Fellaini as the most advanced central midfielder last term was hugely beneficial to Fantasy managers. Providing Rooney leaves, Kagawa’s playmaking abilities seem the natural fit amongst United’s current midfield crop – given that he produced 13 goals and eight assists from 31 appearances in his final year at Dortmund, his suitability to the role is more than apparent.

  • Having finished last season with just six goals and four assists over 20 appearances, it’s possible that Kagawa is in line for a slight drop in price next time out. Starting last season at 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he racked up just 87 points and can resultantly be expected to slip to around 8.0 when the player lists are revealed next month. Given that previous mid-price options such as Fellaini, Michu and Kevin Nolan are set for a hefty price hike after their respective displays in a similar position, the Japan international could prove to be a little more budget friendly when assessing the midfield landscape.

  • Kagawa’s hat-trick and 21 point FPL against Norwich in Gameweek 28 highlights his capabilities. Granted, six goals over 1,314 minutes was far from impressive but compared to United’s other midfielders, it’s positively prolific – Nani and Antonio Valencia both notched one goal apiece, while Ashley Young failed to find the net at all last season. New boy Wilfried Zaha also offers an option but after a campaign where Michael Carrick was United’s highest scoring midfielder with a mere 101 FPL points, Kagawa could be primed to become a key player as the Moyes era gets underway.

We are asking in our poll (see middle column on the home page) which of you will be going without one of RVP and Bale when the new season gets underway. We have also asked which of you will be looking to get both in.

But is there anyone out there who dares go into the forthcoming season without either?

As in, if there are some 2nd rung players (Kagawa may be a good example) who I think are underpriced, it might be worth opting for a combination of those players and sacrificing on Bale/RVP in order to do so.

At the moment, I'm thinking I will forego both in favour of Cavani, Higuain, Aguero, Hazard, Oscar, HeMan and old Shinji

It is obviously a huge risk but I really feel that those two will struggle to justify their prices with the other riches on offer. I also think Shinji will hedge the no-RVP gamble a little.

going without RVP could have benefits; he'll be the most expensive player, tough fixtures, other united players could come to the fore. But going with bale would be pure masochism.

IF Bale's 12, RVP's 13.5-14 AND Chelsea start with a DGW and sign Cavani + Arsenal get Higuain, Aguero is cheapish, Kagawa is cheapish, Spurs sign a decent striker then yeah could well do.

Not all of those things need to happen (except the DGW) but enough of them and I'll at least tinker with a team without them.

I think i'll be going without RVP. think there's better options for cheaper in Higuain (assuming he signs) and and aguero, as well some other good striker options this year. the way I see it i'd rather have Aguero + Higuain than RVP + 6-7m striker

Bale on the other hand i'll definitely be getting. as I think that he'll be worth the additional 1m over his mf counterparts and he is the main attacking option at spurs whereas at united you might be able to get good cover in kagawa or rooney or one of their wingers if they have a good season

It will depend a lot on signings but I think I'll go without both. If worse comes to worse I can always WC them in but I think its worth the gamble as a change in management at United + tough fixtures will make things interesting for United. Spurs also tend to have slow starts and transfer speculation surrounding both AVB and Bale could also have an affect.

    Hi guys,

It's been a while, hope you're all good. Am thinking City, Chelsea, Soton and WHU and maybe a real cheapie as fifth defender from the outset. Am also tempted to play Hart every week and do another cheap defender. Would probs do a West Brom defender If was doing that. How does that look ?
Can't wait to get back at it again...!!

    1. Accept the new job offer with higher salary, or
    2. Stay on the old one for lower salary but have probably better perspective mid term..

    The difference in salary is 20 - 25 %

How easy was it to get the new job offer? Potential for career progress that way?

Have you told your current company that you got a job offer with a higher salary? They may offer you an increased salary to stay.

We interviewed 3 people last year and offered them jobs. All three got raises from their current jobs and turned us down. It was probably what they were looking for in the first place.

Unlucky, they need to invent precontracts where you can get people to sign that they are not just going through the process for a pay rise.

🙂 That would be very handy. I absolutely hate interviewing, terrible way to assess people for jobs. Favours over-confident people with inflated opinions of themselves.

There's a phenomenon I've noticed that probably has a name.

Basically, very intelligent, skillful people understand the limits of their skills and are appropriately humble. People with less insight don't realise which skills they lack because they're not even aware that such skills even exist - that leads them to think they're brilliant. Unfortunately, the latter people tend to make good first impressions which is really all an interview is.

It's also a very artificial kind of pressure. Most jobs don't require people to find answers to questions within a minute of being asked. So again, the wrong type of people thrive in those situations. People who spend time coming to excellent, considered answers don't stand a chance.

Doing well in an interview is a skill that can be learnt, it's not all down to confidence (although that obviously helps). You can basically anticipate most questions that an interviewer will ask (or variants thereof), so you can prepare your answers in advance and on the day just tailor them to the way the question has been phrased.

True but that still relies on skills that aren't necessarily applicable to all jobs, particularly thinking on your feet. Some jobs do require people to think on their feet and tailor rehearsed material to a given situation under pressure. Most don't though.

Yeah, I get where you're coming from on the interviewer's side and having interviewed a few people for jobs myself, I agree with that.

My point is that the interviewee does not have to be disadvantaged by this situation because they can learn how to play the game. If you prepare well in advance there is less need to think on your feet during the interview.

Slipped away during my friends wedding reception speeches at 11.00am to make some last minute changes to my team

How was I to know he'd ask me to do some impromptu stand up during my absence. The whole room gave me some funny looks when I returned to the room 30 minutes later.

Nothing beyond frittering away hours and hours and hours of time most weeks which could have been spent more productively at work, more attentively with my wife, more healthily outside, etc. That's probably bad enough in the eyes of most 'normal' folk but is entry level stuff compared to some of the other stories circulating!

Many years ago I somehow 😉 managed to get hold of the password of a rivals team. I logged into his team to see what he was up to and by accident transferred in Diaby for a 2 pointer.

      I still feel bad.

There was a big question mark hanging over Rudd Van Nistelrooy lining up in a potentially profitable weekend fixture. I wanted to give him the armband but the risk was huge, ( There was no vice capt then) At the time I worked with a guy who was a really good school friend of John O Shea. I pestered him for about 4 hrs on the Friday afternoon and finally annoyed him into ringing John O to find out if Rudd was in or out.
Turned out John O was actually sitting with Rudd, Silvestre, Alan Smith and Gary Neville. He started laughing and said "say nothing, but he's fine, He's playing". Then Gary Neville started having a go at him and cut the conversation short.
The next day good old Alex hinted that Rudd might not start and as a result few skippered Rudd.
I did and he banged 2 in a 3-2 win over Fulham ( Think it was Fulham)

I thought it was an acceptable length to go to 🙂

Not just for fantasy football, but football spectatorship in general, I was told by my orthopedic consultant that a problem I had with my hip probably needed an operation. I know this makes me sound ancient, but I was 31 at the time. I asked how long I'd be off work so that I could plan when to have it so it would have the least impact on my business, and was told I'd be housebound for two weeks. I weighed up my options, and decided to have it in early June so that I could watch every group game from the 2010 World Cup.

I also thought I'd put my time and the insight gained to good use, and so played ten different fantasy World Cup formats. That approach has stuck with me and I've played pretty much every format going ever since.

Ok this is doing my head in any none of my mates agree with me.

Is it a smarter move for United to make a serious challenge for Bale now? Or do we stick with the plan that we wait until he goes to Madrid before trying to get Ronaldo?

I think we should go for Bale above Ronaldo anyway for the long term. So why not make a huge bid now? If he still goes to Madrid then chase Ronaldo.

    What do you all think?

How would CR7 react knowing United were pursuing Bale first and turned their attention to Ronaldo only after Bale signed for Madrid?

I know Bale is 5 years younger but you would struggle to find a professional who looks after them self better than he does. There is the issue of potential sell on value in which case Bale would be the better investment but I wouldn't necessarily favour Bale over Ronaldo.

That's true. The bit my mates and I discussed and disagree on was a lot more simple. They said Ronaldo is a better buy over Bale. I disagree. Even if it's at the exact same price.

We have data for the previous two seasons but it's Opta data, not PA data - obviously this is ok for goals but assists are treated differently under Opta definitions. If you take a look at some of the movies on this page...

It will give you an idea of what stats are available...the player compare tool and custom stats table movies in particular.

Joe Kinnear has walked into newcastle with a sawn of shotgun shooting everyone. Llambias is gone, Pardew has little say over transfers, and the transfer of long term target Douglas has been cancelled by Kinnear. Add in the fact he called Cabaye, Kebab and its great fun.

Nope. You don't get an extensive library. Every month they give away free games on rotation. So basically you need a big hard drive to store all the games before they get replaced. As long as you have them installed on your HD and have an active PS+ account. You have access to all the games they've given away free since you first joined.

That is amazing, and surprising. You wouldn't get Microsoft doing something like that.

Is this going to apply to the PS4 or not until a year or so later once there are older titles available?

Yeah it will apply but to a much lesser extent for now I think.

Your ps+ account covers PS3, PS4 and Vita all in one though.

I think they said something about Drive Club PS+ being free on release. Just checked a forum and people think it's basically going to be like a huge demo which is still brill imo considering it will be £45-50 on release.
