Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Shinji Kagawa

Arriving from Borussia Dortmund early last summer, Shinji Kagawa looked primed to become a key midfield target for the 2012/13 season. Having helped steer Jurgen Klopp’s side to the title in his final year in the Bundesliga, the Japan international’s displays in the role in “the hole” suggested United were set to shift formation to 4-2-3-1 and hand him a place behind Wayne Rooney as Sir Alex Ferguson attempted to wrestle the title back from City:

Three days before their Gameweek 1 opener at Everton, however, the acquisition of Robin Van Persie turned the Fantasy landscape on its head and made a significant dent in Kagawa’s prospects. While the Dutchman ran riot and grabbed the goals that recaptured the crown, the former Dortmund man struggled to settle in his debut season, with a knee injury and occasional game time on the left flank limiting his potential in what proved to be Ferguson’s final term in charge at Old Trafford.

Key Factors

  • Wayne Rooney’s decision to hand in a transfer request towards the end of last season looks key to Kagawa’s prospects. Omitted from the United squad for the final couple of league games under Ferguson, Rooney seems determined to leave after a lacklustre campaign – having dropped deeper to accommodate Van Persie, his possible departure would free up Kagawa’s preferred position in “the hole” and afford him the chance to slot in behind Van Persie.

  • New manager David Moyes’ penchant for a lone striker system may also be advantageous. While it’s all too early to ascertain just what sort of formation the former Everton boss has in mind as he takes the Old Trafford reins, his use of Marouane Fellaini as the most advanced central midfielder last term was hugely beneficial to Fantasy managers. Providing Rooney leaves, Kagawa’s playmaking abilities seem the natural fit amongst United’s current midfield crop – given that he produced 13 goals and eight assists from 31 appearances in his final year at Dortmund, his suitability to the role is more than apparent.

  • Having finished last season with just six goals and four assists over 20 appearances, it’s possible that Kagawa is in line for a slight drop in price next time out. Starting last season at 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he racked up just 87 points and can resultantly be expected to slip to around 8.0 when the player lists are revealed next month. Given that previous mid-price options such as Fellaini, Michu and Kevin Nolan are set for a hefty price hike after their respective displays in a similar position, the Japan international could prove to be a little more budget friendly when assessing the midfield landscape.

  • Kagawa’s hat-trick and 21 point FPL against Norwich in Gameweek 28 highlights his capabilities. Granted, six goals over 1,314 minutes was far from impressive but compared to United’s other midfielders, it’s positively prolific – Nani and Antonio Valencia both notched one goal apiece, while Ashley Young failed to find the net at all last season. New boy Wilfried Zaha also offers an option but after a campaign where Michael Carrick was United’s highest scoring midfielder with a mere 101 FPL points, Kagawa could be primed to become a key player as the Moyes era gets underway.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

So Arsenal signs Higuain (we assume its done) - what happens to Podolski and Giroud? Waht are the prospects for Caz? based on last season, we know Caz's best role is in the hole with Pod on the left and Wally on the right. But Wilshire and Rosicky played in the hole a bit as well. Any thoughts?

Looks like Liverpool will sign Luis Alberto, plays as a left sided attacker and can also play as lone striker. Scored 11 goals and provided 18 assists last season for Barcelona B last season. At the age of 20 I wonder would he be a regular in the starting 11 and whether he would be classed as a mid or striker. Certainly an interesting FPL prospect. http://www.thehardtackle.com/2013/liverpool-transfer-news-luis-albert/?

Joking aside, the idea of the hot topics is to group together things like this so people can see all the posts in one place. Less of an issue currently but would be nice to get in the habit 🙂

With the amount of people on at the moment, if we all went to the topic that we wanted to talk about we'd all be on our own most likely, there still has to be a main thread and convo's will obviously always continue in here changing form topic to topic.

Sure, but the reason people are posting team names is because of the hot topic on the previous page, the whole concept is that conversations can remain active even once there's a new page, or even a new article.

Other conversations will still start up just as before but things like this shouldn't span several pages. That's the idea anyway 😉

Some will like it more than others. It's easy to change the system, the people on the other hand... 😉

Weirdly it worked on day one - people were returning to hot topics on old articles hours after they'd started.

what's your opinion about budget alternatives for big hitters?

UTD-RVP big hitter -could be overpriced , hopefully kagawa can be the man who can at least constantly delivering pts, possibly Valenica if he can preforem like 2 years ago

Chelsa-too be honest i dont look at anyone other than Hazard , but everything depends about Mourinho system and if Oscar gets Ozil role he could be better bet

Man City-Aguero and Silva are obvious candidates and hopefully they wil be cheapier next season,Navas could do well under pelegrini

Spurs-Bale,probably must have, maybe if spurs sign new striker , Lennon could be great but he is very inconsinstent

i wonder does budget big clubs players could do well in next season cause it would be impossible to have all big hitters

Yup, get the guy who will be his team's main source of points, not the guy you've picked as you couldn't afford the main man.

It's like Lennon, would you REALLY have him over say AJ, Sess, Snodders etc.

Connor Wilson is usually fairly reliable when it comes to LFC and he just tweeted:

#Mignolet will not be coming in as number1.. Pepe #Reina is and Liverpool fully intended to keep it that way. He's all for competition. #LFC

I guess we'll be keeping Reina for another year 😯

    Expensive not always best

There is a natural tendancy to assume that more expensive equals better, we all have this bias, and it can be detrimental to our fantasy prospects.
Hands up if you chose Glen Johnson over Enrique , or the previous season Walker over Assou-ekotto If so you may well have been a victim of this bias.

There are many examples where from a fantasy perspective its impossible to know who will do better in the future. Another example Lulaku or Benteke . who will do better ? None of us know ,half might say Lulaku the other half Benteke

Most people would choose the one they preferred , they would naturally gravitate towards the most expensive , or the one the forum favoured , or the one who got the mot point the previous week. Three different biases there , price bias ,herd mentality and recent event bias

I would argue that thee best option is to simply choose the cheaper alternative, the rest is mere speculation but saving a million is a concrete benefit for your team. So the next time you are torn between two options just pick the cheapest.

This game is all about accruing small advantages and managing your finances. Over the course of a long season the attention to detail will pay off

In that example, the relative value is obvious. I'm thinking more of those situations where it's not so obvious, e.g. last season when Fellaini and Pienaar were at a similar price early in the season and there was serious debate on here about which was the better prospect.

I can see the argument in this, there is a very good chance that Shaw and Clyne will prove to be far more profitable over the season then Boroc, but is Boroc's rotation with Ruddy a better option? (insight appreciated)

He does go well with Ruddy but there will be other keepers. Krul and Vorm are likely to be 5.0m, and I hear Marshall(4.5) is talented. Cheap defenders who get attacking points are more rare and valuable.

Still, it must be seen as a downgrade on the Sunderland defence and without the discount attached, if Mignolet had left later on.

I think I'll be leaving the Mignolet/Krul pair well alone although I may toy with their backs if they are cheap enough and nailed.

Depends how you measure value, but if you measure it as FPL points per £ cost, then yes the top 2 were Begovic and Jaaskelainen, both with 32 points per £.

That's not to say you should pick any cheap keeper, obviously you need to get the right one. Guzan was on 23.6 points per £ and Boruc was on 14.
