Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Kevin Mirallas

Snapped up from Olympiakos towards the end of last year’s summer transfer window, Kevin Mirallas arrived at Everton on the back of an eye-catching campaign. With his final season in Greece harvesting 20 goals from 25 league games, the Belgian looked a canny acquisition by David Moyes but a role on the Toffees right flank, combined with an ongoing hamstring complaint, limited his Fantasy potential.

His classification as a forward in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game hardly helped either. While Marouane Fellaini benefitted from his advanced central berth behind a lone forward, Mirallas suffered as a reverse out of position performer – despite being stuck on the wing in Moyes’ preferred 4-4-1-1 system, he chipped in with six goals, five assists and 13 bonus points from 24 starts. With Moyes taking up the reins at Manchester United, however, the installation of Roberto Martinez to the Goodison hotseat may be set to promote Mirallas as a significant Fantasy performer for the season ahead.

Key Factors

  • Martinez’s penchant for a 3-4-3 formation seems tailor-made for Mirallas. With the former Wigan boss expected to field Seamus Coleman on the right of the midfield four, the Belgian looks likely to be shifted further forward, affording him greater license to thrive as an attacking prospect. While such a system would diminish Fellaini’s potential, with a move to central midfield on the cards, Mirallas should rise in the Fantasy pecking order under Martinez’s guidance.

  • Last season’s spot on the flank should now benefit Mirallas. A midfield classification across the Fantasy games may apply, affording us a real out of position prospect with a keen eye for goal. Price-wise, his debut campaign suggests a drop from last term’s initial 7.5 price tag could be on offer – Fellaini and Steven Pienaar both started the previous campaign at 6.5 and, given that Mirallas ultimately returned a total of 96 points, such a cost would be a fair reflection of his contribution last time out.

  • The hamstring issue which hampered his game time now finally seem to be behind him. Mirallas limped out of the Gameweek 11 clash with Sunderland after less than half an hour and lasted just 45 minutes of the Gameweek 16 home match with Tottenham before succumbing to the same problem. Moyes courted caution with the problem, easing him back into the Toffees first-team, but a fully-fit Mirallas started each of his side’s last 11 league games and proved an increasingly instrumental figure for the Merseysiders.

  • Further analysis of Mirallas’ form highlights a definite upturn in performance over those final few months of the season. Devoid of injury and finally accustomed to the rigours of the Premier League, he produced five goals, an assist and 13 bonus points over those final 11 fixtures, compared to a single goal and four assists across his first 16 appearances. Even if – as some suspect – Martinez begins with last season’s formation until the players get to grips with his tactics, Mirallas’ potential still looks to be strong.

  • The opening fixture list has been relatively kind to Martinez’s troops. Three of their first four home games hold plenty appeal (WBA, NEW, HUL) and with trips to Norwich and Cardiff also on their agenda, Everton face just two of last season’s top eight in the first eight Gameweeks, with a home game against Chelsea and visit to City in Gameweeks 4 and 7 respectively.

Who do you guys think will be in relegation trouble next season? I'm thinking:

Cardiff, Hull, Palace = Newly Promoted

Stoke = New Manager, may lose defensive solidity

Villa = Brought in plenty of new players, but worryingly, still no experienced players being brought in

Newcastle = Douglas/Kinnear fiasco. Dear Lord.

Norwich/Sunderland = Both lack firepower, but both should be safe.

Southampton = They look to be going from strength to strength from my POV but others seem to disagree.

I can only see Cardiff staying up from the promoted 3. It's anyone's guess from there. Really does come down to what each of these teams do in the transfer market.

I'd say, of the three, Cardiff are better equipped from the off - they were the superior team of the three last season, have the best defence of the three and some quality in midfield and an old head in Bellamy - that all helps.

The issue with Palace is that they've lost Zaha who was capable of winning matches on his own in the Championship - yes they have been linked with some decent players but, of those, Kone is probably best discussed and he went down with a Wigan side last season, managed by one of the best young managers in the game.

Sadly, I'd say all three have a lot of work to do if they are to stand a chance of survival. I say sadly, because that could well make for a dull relegation battle next season if they're cut adrift. I really hope they can all compete.

Thanks for the reply mark, its true cardiff were stand out winners but they didnt enjoy coming to selhurst...lost to us, as did Hull 4-2. Thats why i say our home form is key...we went 18 unbeaten at home last season, cardiff and hull didnt, thats why i think we could do better than them (im not saying we will though) Hull really aren't all that great

Aye, Selhurst is one of those grounds that no team or supporters like to visit. I remember, even when Forest turned up with a strong team, there's something about the place that put us and other teams on the back foot. Without being rude, it's not the most welcoming arena - despite the best efforts of the cheerleaders 😉 - I guess that worked in your favour last season.

I just see replacing Zaha as a massive task - with him in your side you could stay organised and wait for some magic. That won't be there next season and your organisation is going to have to be on a whole different level.

hahaha yes our ground is so old school it hurts...practically been the same since the 20's apart from the new holmesdale stand which changed in the 90's i believe

At times last season alot of people were saying Bolasie was showing up Zaha and i believe he has what it takes...if we can get Ince (through holloway) i think them 2 on the wing can cause some problems especially at home

No offence but this set of promoted sides are the worse we've had in years, Hull will get battered this year, given that they only just had a positive GD last season.

You could of said that about Swansea though to be fair, first time in the prem.....and look what happened, what about reading in 06 when they finished 8th? wasnt that there first time back in ages

Norwich are a yoyo club just like us, the key is signings....we scored the 2nd most goals last season and the top team that did...didn't even go up so, if murray can get back by october i'd be thrilled

Not for me...Swansea, like Ipswich a few seasons before, had a method of playing and the players in their system that gave them a chance of earning points at the top level.

Palace and Villa for me... Not sure about the 3rd spot...

I think Newcastle could be in disarray, but depends if Cabaye leaves and what kind of a season Cisse has.

Norwich seem to have made some savvy transfers and have good team work and Southampton should be safe too. Not too sure about Sunderland, PDC seems to be changing the team entirely.

Cardiff do seem the better of the promoted sides on their current squads, but hey a few decent transfers and this could all change. I'm not really sure about Hull, I saw a fair few of their games last season and in some I thought they were excellent but really poor in others. Palace need the goals, if they can get Zaha back or someone else to add to the home clean sheets then you could be right about them staying up...

I used to like Poyet, still do maybe. The conspiracy theorist in me says he'll appeal, get an unfair dismissals verdict and a payout. There's probably a clause somewhere that says constructive dismissal will void his contract and he'll get no compensation.

    Evening Lads,

Some more three way rotations I've found for anyone interested.

    Cheers 🙂

    Southampton/Stoke/WestHam

    First 7

    CAR/CPL/STK/WHM/EVE/CPL/SWA

    Next 12

    WBA/FUL/AVL/HUL/SUN/FUL/CAR/CHE/SUN/AVL/car/WBA

Analysis: 3 promoted side games in the first 7 along with Stoke and West Ham who were 1st and 2nd in terms of toothless away from home last affords this trio a very good start. Longevity is good but does include a top four game but in general is good enough. Possible negative is West Ham and Stoke could well be 5mil. Wilson + Demel 😉

    Southampton/WestBrom/WestHam

    First 7

    CAR/SUN/STK/WHM/SUN/CPL/SWA

    Next 12

    stk/FUL/CPL/HUL/AVL/FUL/AVL/NOR/SUN/HUL/car/WBA

Analysis: 2 promoted sides, Stoke and West Ham like the previous rotation and Sunderland twice in the first seven. Sunderland could be a side in trouble and form could dip when you consider the difficult start they have been given. Longevity is very good with Hull and Villa arriving twice to the rotation.

    Cardiff/Southampton/Stoke

    First 7

    wba/CPL/EVE/WHM/TOT/CPL/SWA

    Next 12

    WBA/FUL/SOT/HUL/SUN/ARS/CAR/cpl/WBA/AVL/SOT/SUN

Analysis: So so first seven however the next 12 is very good with only Arsenal being a hiccup in the rotation. This rotation has a potential 4mil player involved (Cardiff)

    Cardiff/Newcastle/Southampton

    First 7

    wba/WHM/FUL/WHM/HUL/CPL/SWA

    Next 12

    LIV/FUL/SWA/HUL/NOR/WBA/AVL/cpl/SOT/cpl/STK/SUN

Analysis: 2 Promoted sides and West Ham twice provides a very good first 7. Next 12 is very good if you don't mind an away game or two involved in your rotation. Negative is Newcastle may come in at 5mil.

    AstonVilla/Stoke/WestBrom

    First 7

    SOT/CPL/SWA/NEW/SUN/NOR/hul

    Next 12

    WBA/EVE/CPL/CAR/AVL/SUN/CAR/NOR/hul/HUL/CPL/SWA

Analysis: This rotation is in my opinion the best when looking at the whole 19. It plays the promoted sides 8 times for example. It also includes Villa so anyone wanting to have Lowton, this is your rotation 🙂

Yeah, I was surprised at how fast you did it. Always knew you couldn't be trusted 😉

Anyway, you need to change the colour from rotation to no rotation (or vice versa) on the following:

          Palace tab - Chelsea GW16
          Everton tab - Hull GW7

There's a few that you say surely not to yourself but then you look at the season tables stats and you can't argue with them. Man City attacking away is an example of that for me. Tempted to either make 2011/12 season stats a bit more relevant or just increase their form to 1.1.

Add in the config values on the "Tinker with your Ticker" tab and watch the season ticker and fixture difficulty come alive 🙂

Once you get an idea of it you can start editing the value more towards your opinions.

Another strong performance from Spain but they never had to get out of 3rd gear to see of Nigeria. Nigeria looked good in the final 3rd but kept fluffing their chances and Spain's passing and movement was too good for them to cope with.

Soldado was poor. Torres replaced him and immediately scored. Silva came on for Cesc.

Alba was in beast mode scoring 2 goals with his electric place.

Abel Hernandez scored 4 and Suarez got 2 in Ururguay's 8-0 demolition of Tahiti. Scotti missed a penalty then got sent off for Uruguay. Tahiti are still the best team in Oceania though.

Lukaku should be the choice forward for Mourinho if he stays at Chelsea this season.

Liverpool sign three players - Kolo Toure, Iago Aspas, and Luis Alberto - even before the transfer window has officially opened.

Who do you see as a good FPL prospect next year?

Out of those, only Aspas for me.

Alberto won't figure much in the league, in terms of starts. Toure has fitness issues and i doubt he's been signed as 1st choice. Aspas is the obvious prospect but it depends on his price and how he settles. Can't see past Sturridge for now.

And then, in the middle of a key game against Liverpool, Frankie's magic football came to Frankie about ten yards outside of the Liverpool 18 yard box, and Frankie thought "I'd better maybe pass this", but the magic ball said "don't listen to that sh*t Frankie....you hit this as hard as you can"

And do you know what happened then children? Frank closed his eyes and hit it as hard as he could and then that magic ball took a massive deflection off Essien's arse, and then it flew into the top corner and then James Terrance wanted to say something like "F*&$ you you dirty Spanish waiter!" but then Frank's editor said that wasn't politically correct so everyone forgot all about it

From these stats, they are telling me that Man U paid £25.6 million transfer fee and £5m a year wages on average for a player that averaged (252/9) = 28 starts per season, and gained ((2.32 - 2.10) x 38) = 8.36 points per season

    FORM Vs FIXTURES

Have been looking back through my player histories looking for correlations between form and fixtures. Its not a compehensive survey (im too lazy) but it looks to me from a practical point of view that the following are true

1).For defences fixtures are far more important than form
2)For midfielders and forwards form is more important than fixtures.

There is a slight correlation between attacking points and fixtures ,however I would not consider removing an on form attacker simply because a few fixtures look tricky, its highly debatable that it would be worth a transfer.

Similarly it would not be worth bringing in an out of form attacker simply because of a few easy fixtures. Those of us who bought in and captained Aguero for thr Reading game can testify to that.

I thought about attempting a more scientific survey, however it not straightforward ,firstly you need to define “in form” and “ easy “fixture.
It is further complicated in that individual players vary, some play better against good opposition, others worse

Good point, which is another reason to choose them based on fixtures,
With the top defenders like Baines then individual form worth considering but with the budget options its mainly clean sheet points your after

Firstly, thanks for initiating so many discussions over the past few days. It's been a very intriguing weekend and it helped pass the time at home over the weekend (very hazy outside so I'm afraid to step out of my abode).

I'd agree with the attackers and form, especially FPL-wise. I'd like to contribute to the "definition of form" argument firstly by stating that there have been studies that have been agreed confirming that goals are quite correlated to shots (on target or not) taken in the box. Hopefully this would be a good starting point for most to look out for, because intuitively looking at players has a weakness of letting a lot of "consistent performers" slip through the cracks.

With defenders, I'd like to advocate that it's more of a mixture of form and fixture rather than fixtures alone. Defending styles do come into play, and what people MIGHT not realise is that there are 2 types of defenses among the popular defenses: "Good but overworked", and "Avoiding the issue", as commonly used by Experimental361. Last team's early season form defences, Stoke and West Ham, were "good but overworked" defenses, and on a personal level I'd be looking out for defenses like these in picking up "the next Bego or Jussi".

Hopefully I've not rambled too much, but my point here is that I'd like to point out that there are certain trends that we can look out for (based on last season's data) to identify form attackers or defenders. Fixtures are probably best used OFFENSIVELY when your attacker is in form, and you've got good fixtures lined up. Cap material. Fixtures are used best DEFENSIVELY imo when you don't really have a clue of who's in form yet, and you are trying to maximise CS potential.

Haha didn't expect you to bite.

"Good but overworked" refers to a defence that takes a lot of shots in the box to actually concede a goal, such as Stoke. You'd define them as "resolute" but because of the way they defend, they allow their opponents to take so many shots anyway, so once in a while they do concede a goal or two (or lots if their opponents happen to be on fire or they're really unlucky. Ask Jonny Walters when Stoke let in 4 against Chelsea). In most cases, they hardly concede because they're fundamentally good.

"Avoiding the issue" is the exact opposite. They hardly face shots (maybe due to a high-line defense + a well worked offside trap) but when they DO face shots, they take very little against them to concede. Every other mid-tier defense BAR West Ham and Stoke (and probably Norwich late season) would probably be in this category. In fact, some of the elite defenses would be in this category as well (as you'd expect their defenders to be better in tackling) but due to errors (such as Arsenal at home) they take very few shots conceded to actually concede a goal.

Note that these patterns do change over time due to injuries, new signings etc. and unique playstyles (such as Swansea playing 2 fullbacks on the right to counter Everton's left flank) so it's up to us to identify what combination of mentality, defending style and ability allows us to classify these defenses, and hence adjust our investment accordingly.

Isnt this overcomplicating things a little
It basically comes down to some teams ate solid at the back and others are not

If fpl awarded points for clearances, blocks etc then the style of defending might be important, but all we really care about is if they keep a clean sheet or not
They very difficult to predict , all you can do is try and put the odds slightly more in your favour by picking defenders with easier fixtures.
Ijust go by betfair cleansheet odds as they have all known information factored in

Well if you simplify it that way you can go along that line 🙂

I'm just stating my point of view really, and to me, it's not overcomplicating anything at all.

true but if you dig deeper you can get a better idea of if they'll keep a cs in a given gw. if you look at why they keep a cs and compare it to the attacking style of the team they are playing paired with H/A you get a good idea of how it'll turn out.

like if an "avoiding the issue" type defense is playing a team that creates a lot of chances, they are likely to concede, whereas a "Good but overworked" might not as they normally allow a lot of shots and still keep a cs

I understand your argument , in that a team which has few shots against because of a good offside trap concedes when it fails. Therefore in theory is more likely to concede when playing teams that are good at beating the offside trap.

In practice however , if that team is Villa and they are playing Man u .Ars man c .chelsea liverpool or tottenham then they are staying firmly on my bench, i couldnt care how they concede

of course, playing villa against one of them would be a bit mental.

but it might help you decide if you should play Wilson against Everton or Debuchy against Villa. I picked random sides so maybe not the best example but my point is more when you're looking at mid and upper-mid table sides

of course. I'm just saying that IF you wanted to look into this in more detail, you could. for example the cs odds might not really take into account that a certain defense struggles against players with pace whereas another struggles against a strong/powerful player. my point is simply that you can analyze these things in more detail. though obviously you could do well without that additional analysis

      Totally agree.

I would add, though, that for me fixtures can be more important than form when picking a fifth mid or third striker, particularly at the start of the season (I realise there is no real form at this point) and when wildcarding.

The reason being that I might need to call on them on weeks 2,5 and 6 after bringing them in and can't possibly know what their form will be at that point. As I try to avoid hits whenever possible and don't want to use a free on a squad player my best chance of increasing that players contribution in those specific weeks is to use fixtures as a guide.

If your 5th mid or 3rd striker will be spending most of his matches on the bench and you do not want to waste a transfer on replacing him, then price, form and being nailed on are more important than fixtures. Anichebe was an ideal 8th attacking player in the second half of last season for this reason. If however you intend to rotate your 5th mid with your 4th mid or 3rd striker then their fixtures are more important.

Hey Triggerlips. I did this analysis a little while back. Looking at form and fixtures based on data from all 38 gameweeks for the top 25 scoring mids and forwards last season.

      http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/06/14/great-expectations-philippe-coutinho/?hc_page=2&hc_refresh=133#hc_comment_4972141

For want of better data, I resorted to defining form by Points Per Game for the previous 4 gameweeks. Simplistic and yet it does seem to work as a reasonable proxy for form. The average points players do seem well correlated with their previous points.

Thx for that , agree with the point about 5th mids and attackers. I suspect the weaker the player the more they need easier fixtures

This analysis confirms what I suspected and justifies the general approach of picking keepers and defenders based on fixtures, hence planning ahead with a rotation strategy, but planning ahead not being quite as important when it comes to attack, where short-term form, and also long-term class - RVP, Bale, Mata, Michu, being more important.

What I take from Berbagod's point is that certain keepers will get a lot more save points, regardless of opposition.

I guess defensive fixtures and offensive form will also come into conflict from time to time, so you may want to reconsider playing your defenders, say at home to Villa if Benteke is in form.

Well that's the whole point of a rotation strategy really: To have your defs playing favourable fixtures as much as possible (in order to minimise transfers there) while going with the form attackers, using the majority of your transfers there.

What you took is also something people wouldn't pick up, good spot there. It is true that defenses that allow lots of shots will probably allow those keepers to get more save points. We just have to be careful, because among keepers that make a lot of saves, there are those that are protected by their defense more often (Stoke, West Ham etc.) and those who get lots of saves but concede 4 goals anyway (Wigan, Reading last season)

Your final point is perhaps the one least talked about: Clashes of defence against attack will happen, especially if you stick to the same back 5 over 19 weeks. Only 2 ways around it, not sure which way you use though.

Really good point. I think I've fallen into the trap on many occasions before of putting fixtures before form for ALL areas of my team when in fact it's a combination for defensive assets of form and fixtures, whereas for attacking assets form takes precedence with fixtures being a bonus if favourable.

Bit of a penny drop moment this - you have my 'up vote'!!

Yes if the form striker or midfielder has the fixture also, then this is a bonus.....this then is likely combination to be the deciding factor for a good captain pick 🙂

Yes personally I think form makes strikers fixture proof.

Quality strikers showing 'good form' are likely to score against anyone, especially the past few seasons when the top teams have been conceding goals as they play more a expansive attacking football.

I also agree with your two quoted points below. These are the tactics I will most likely be going with again this coming season as I adopted them last season and I stuck with them each GW right until the end.

'1).For defences fixtures are far more important than form
2)For midfielders and forwards form is more important than fixtures'.

Though fixtures for defences are not always 'far more important than form' if the defenders for example are in the Baines, Enrique etc category. If these type of defenders are showing 'good form' then they are 'fixture proof' also imo as they have the potential to produce attacking returns each GW.
