Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Luke Shaw

Having played just a single FA Cup match prior to the previous campaign, it’s fair to say little was expected of Luke Shaw upon Southampton’s return to the top-flight. A product of the club’s youth academy, he looked firmly behind Danny Fox in the left-back pecking order but after climbing off the bench towards the end of the Gameweek 10 defeat at West Brom, the youngster soon established himself as a first-team regular.

Initially selected by Nigel Adkins and subsequently under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino, Shaw went on to start 22 of the Saints’ remaining 28 league matches, with only a couple of minor knocks and a brief illness limiting his game time over the rest of the season. A series of consistent displays and comparisons with fellow-Southampton academy graduate Gareth Bale already have the suitors circling but, despite being linked with the likes of Chelsea and United, the teenager is expected to remain at St Mary’s as Pochettino’s side look to better last term’s 14th place finish.

Key Factors

  • Analysing Southampton’s defensive displays, the stats highlight how they gradually improved under both managers last season. The first 10 Gameweeks under Adkins saw the Saints concede 28 times, while the following 12 matches harvested 12 goals against before Pochettino took over. The Argentine’s installation saw his side take a step backwards, shipping 11 goals in six games, before his high pressing game proved dividend, with just nine goals against in the final 10 Gameweeks. With Pochettino’s future looking assured, the Saints could well benefit from less chopping and changing at the helm next time round.

  • Ultimately, with 60 goals against in 2012/13, Southampton were one of the poorest overall backlines. Given that only four defences conceded more goals, it’s fair to assume that they will remain in the budget bracket across the Fantasy games – a price of 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) looks on the cards for Shaw and, with new boy Dejan Lovren adding plenty quality at centre-half, the Saints could prove strong value at the back next time round.

  • While the likes of Lovren and keeper Artur Boruc offer up alternatives at the back, Southampton’s 4-2-3-1 system and high pressing game seems tailor made for both Shaw and fellow full-back Nathaniel Clyne to forage forward and offer plenty pace, width and creativity from deep. Granted, he failed to produce any attacking returns last term but, having grown accustomed to the rigours of the Premier League, Shaw may well be set to justify the level of interest shown by many of the top-flight’s elite.

  • Delving deeper into the defensive data, Shaw’s presence at the back made a considerable difference to the Saints’ resilience. They conceded 37 goals in the 16 matches without him in the first XI, or 2.3 goals per game, compared to just 23 goals against in the left-back’s 22 starts – just over one goal a game conceded; a substantial difference which bodes well for his game time over the season ahead.

  • The opening fixtures have fallen firmly in Pochettino’s favour as he looks to get off to a strong start. Having already engineered home wins over the likes of Chelsea, City and Liverpool during his short spell in charge, the Argentine will be buoyed by a schedule which hands his side seven enticing opening fixtures (SUN, WHM, CPL, SWA, FUL, HUL, AVL) at St Mary’s. As mentioned in one of our recent rotation articles, pairing Shaw with a West Ham backline option looks a viable tactic over the first few months of the campaign.

Come to think about it, Santa Claus wears some pretty awful kit and those horrible red coats the military wore for a while. Maybe I just don't like red cloth. Unless it's a bloody handkerchief.

From a quick google the two theories are tattoos and that he had his sleeve ripped off in a game he played well in and carried it on from there.

Yea me too, Thiago would be welcomed at United with open arms and walk straight into our midfield, come to think of it, he would walk into any midfield in the perm! The perfect Scholes replacement, the signing Fergie should have made years ago.

Yea, and Carrick is no Scholes. He does his job well and has a good range of passing but Thiago is on another level! Watched him for the first time in the U21's and him and Isco were the stars of the show.

Have watched Josh extensively for a few years myself and don't think he's quite got the star quality to be a real first teamer over a long period of time. Could be a decent squad player for us due to the homegrown rules or a decent starter for a mid table team but he just doesnt offer enough for me to really become a nailed on starter. As for Romeu, I've only seen bits and pieces of him like everyone, and he seems solid enough, but again nothing spectacular.

Have never seen Kondogbia play so can't comment on how he is in relation to the two other boys.

C'mon NewArse can we mix it up a bit? Your views on Chelsea are a matter of extensive public record and the constant repetition is beginning to grate a bit. Let's talk positives - how do you feel about the Higuain approach? Will he worth the cash?

Ok i'll stop. It's patrick star and his Arsenal bashing that sets me off. There are too many Chelsea fans on here and not enough Arsenal.

Higuain will be worth the money. If he signs. Arsenal are 2 or 3 signings from having a great season. First time in years we have favorable fixtures early on and we could steamroll next season.

As a Spurs fan I'm bricking it, we always get pipped at the post even when we spend and Arsenal don't, a couple of big Arsenal signings could tip the North London balance back to where it's been my entire life. It's been nice these last couple of years to get a sniff of the upper hand.

Yeah I'm not sure but I was under the impression HC would be used to just ban/mute these sort of trolls for a while that just contribute nothing, rather than things like prevent us from saying bast ard. I don't think anyone is really offended by such mild swearing but the trolling does seem to be getting on peoples nerves, including mine.

HC does allow that, but for every complaint about trolling there's a complaint about censorship. One man's banter is another man's trolling and it's next to impossible to draw that line in a place that suits everyone.

But I thought the up/down vote system was meant to identify when people were growing tired of such comments? I understand that no system is perfect and that there has to be some leniency but if you don't enforce some of those banning/mod tools when someone like this is consistently getting downvoted and the majority of his comments (from what I've seen) are just designed to provoke a negative reaction, when do you use them?

Anyway, rant over. Appreciate that the censorship job is difficult, but it can be frustrating when such wumming goes unpunished yet some of my long posts designed to contribute to the site aren't posted because I used the word bast ard 😉

The primary effect of the votes is to give discussions a rating which affects the order in which they appear when you "sort by rating". For those of us who are still mostly sorting by comment date and time then it doesn't have much effect on what you see. Once a post attains a certain threshold of downvotes it gets automatically moderated, but I believe that threshold is set very high and hasn't been triggered yet.

I think the swear filter has been slightly relaxed recently (please don't let this be a cue for testing it), and I do understand that it could cause frustration in the scenario you describe.

At least with HC the tools are in place, and we can tweak and get it right, none of this is set in stone and if you've got ideas on how it could be improved then do email Jonty, he does listen and he will respond.

A couple of certainties about HC at the moment - there will be at least one hot topic posted by The3rdTurd/Mathmo/similar stats guru and NewArse will be trolling Chelsea fans.

PSV Eindhoven have confirmed that an agreement has been reached with Norwich City over the transfer of Ola Toivonen.

The Canaries have been long tracking the Swede who can operate as an attacking midfielder or striker.

The 26-year-old has bagged 59 goals in 125 appearances since moving to Holland in 2009, and Norwich see him as an ideal partner for Dutchman Ricky Van Wolfswinkel .

PSV technical director Marcel Brands confirmed the agreement to a well known Dutch media source: "We have an agreement with Norwich, and it's now up to Ola if he wants the move."

No fee has been specified, with Brands refusing to give details, but the understanding is it's a fee of around £5.5m.

          Snodders, Toivonen, Pilko

Someones already updated wikipedia that he has already moved bwhahahaha! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keisuke_Honda#Everton

On 28 June Keisuke Honda agreed a deal with English club Everton. The deal sees the play maker contracted at everton until 2016. The players agent confirmed the transfer early Friday morning 28 June on his offical twitter page. Quoted as saying "Keisuke is looking forward to his time at Everton and can't wait to get started in the English premier league." Keisuke Honda had offers from all over Europe turning down offers from big clubs such as; AC Milan and Everton's Mersyside rivals Liverpool. He was unable to join his boyhood hero's Glasgow Rangers due to their transfer ban until 1st September 2013, so has joined Everton but his long term plans is to join Rangers and be part of the most successful club side in world football.

things putting me off is his irregular starts and often subbed off early......would be a risky 5th MF proposition given that there may be cheaper more nailed options at lesser clubs.

    Afternoon fellas.

Popping in and out of the site over the quiet period, trying to keep abreast of the movers and shakers.

One task I'm doing is collating all the players highlighted on FFS posts as ones to watch next season as, for me, it will prove useful when the prices are released and I begin assembling my initial GW1 squad.

Posted this a couple of weeks ago. Here's the latest updated list:

Players to consider for FPL 2013/14:

    Goalkeepers:

John Ruddy (Norwich) Maarten Stekelenburg (fulham)
Tim Krull (Newcastle) Simon Mignolet (L’Pool)

    Defenders:

Seamus Coleman (Everton) Younes Kaboul (Spurs)
Assou Ekotto (Spurs) Jan Vertonghen (Spurs)
Micah Richards (Man City) Kolo Toure (Liverpool)
Fernando Amorebieta (Fulham) Ben Davies (Swansea)
Razvan Rat (West Ham) Mathew Lowton (Aston Villa)
Antonio Luna (Aston Villa) Dejan Lovren (Southampton)
    Luke Shaw (Southampton)

    Midfielders:

Jesus Navas (Man City) Fernandinho (Man City)
David Silva (Man City) Matt Jarvis (West Ham)
Aleksander Tonev (Villa) Hatem Ben Arfa (Newcastle)
Juan Mata (Chelsea) Andre Schurrle (Chelsea)
Wilifred Zaha (Man U) Shinji Kagawa (Man U)
Theo Walcott (Arsenal) Gareth Bale (Spurs)
Deerk Boatang (Fulham) Phillipe Coutinho (L’Pool)
Charlie Adam (Stoke) Gaston Ramirez (Southampton)

    Strikers:

    RVP (ManU) Aguero (Man City)
Ricky Van Wolfswinkel (Norwich) Andreas Weimann (Aston Villa)
Andy Carroll (West Ham) Kevin Mirallas (Everton)
    Iago Aspas (L’Pool)
