Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Mid-Price Forwards

This evening’s article in the ninth in our ongoing assessment of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List. Having previously published articles on Goalkeepers, Budget, Mid-Price and Premium Defenders, followed by Budget, Mid-Price and Premium Midfielders, we turned our attentions to Budget Forwards the other day. Next up, then, we look at what’s on offer in the mid-price forward bracket.

Gabby Agbonlahor’s progress over the last few months of the previous campaign suggest the Villa forward may be a viable option at just 7.0. Despite playing on the left of the front three, Agbonlahor still managed to rack up nine goals and six assists after a slow start – a total of 117 points, while not overly impressive, was his highest haul since 2009/10. For those unwilling to shell out 9.0 for Christian Benteke, Agbonlahor remains a mid-price option with a double Gameweek 1 also to consider – with Arsenal and Chelsea, Liverpool, a blank Gameweek 3 and City in the opening six, though, the schedule has hardly been kind to Paul Lambert’s side. Languishing in the Villa reserves, Darren Bent, at a mere 6.5, will surely find his way onto Fantasy radars if his mooted move to Newcastle comes to fruition – Fulham are also in the hunt, with Martin Jol admitting on Sunday he is keen to bolster his forward options for the season ahead.

Coming in at 8.0, Romelu Lukaku has the potential to be a real bargain if he gets the nod as Chelsea’s main forward under Jose Mourinho. With 17 goals and seven assists in just 2,005 minutes at West Brom last term, the big Belgian proved his Premier League capabilities but with Fernando Torres and Demba Ba (and possibly Wayne Rooney) as competition, there’s no doubt his acquisition still comes with uncertainty attached right now. Having produced four goals and two assists in 135 minutes over the Blues’ pre-season friendlies, though, Lukaku has already earned plenty praise for Mourinho and, while many may prefer the security offered by the more expensive Juan Mata and Eden Hazard in midfield, there’s no doubt that Lukaku has the potential to plunder the points in double Gameweek 1 at home to Hull and Villa.

Arouna Kone’s arrival at Everton seems to bode well for his security of game time. New Toffees boss Roberto Martinez clearly has great faith in the Ivorian’s talents and moved quickly to secure his services after he produced 11 goals and five assists under the Spaniard at Wigan last term. Coming in at just 7.0, the new boy is more budget-friendly than Nikica Jelavic (7.5), though the latter’s double in the weekend win over Blackburn suggests Kone may have a fight on his hands to nail down the lone forward role. Midfielders Kevin Mirallas and Steven Pienaar offer out of position alternatives if Martinez continues to roll out a front three.

The pricing has been kind to Dimitar Berbatov this time out. Fulham’s main man comes in at 7.5 despite scoring 15 goals and providing four assists in his debut season at the Cottage – with spot-kicks in his locker and starts undoubtedly guaranteed, the Bulgarian remains strong value this time out. The potential downside, though, is Martin Jol’s pursuit of a new forward – Berbatov may be moved into a more withdrawn role depending on the type of player his manager acquires; a little concerning, given his returns dried up when fielded in “the hole” as a result of an injury to Bryan Ruiz last term.

Liverpool new boy Iago Aspas looks an intriguing option at a mere 7.0, though the uncertainty surrounding Luis Suarez’s future has a knock-on effect on his potential. With Philippe Coutinho first-choice for the left flank berth, many feel Aspas will be handed the slot on the opposite wing, with Suarez tucking in behind Daniel Sturridge in a 4-2-3-1 but the Spaniard is more than capable of taking up a central position, having produced 12 goals and seven assists as the lone striker for Celta Vigo last season.

A move away for Suarez would be significant and could see Aspas positioned in the middle of the park, with the likes of Luis Alberto, Stewart Downing and Fabio Borini vying for the right flank role. With Suarez suspended for Liverpool’s opening six matches and Sturridge yet to return to pre-season training, Aspas could yet start the campaign as the Reds lone frontman as he looks to continue the form that has seen him already notched three times through the middle this pre-season.

The recent double arrival of Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic looked to signal the beginning of the end for Edin Dzeko but the Bosnian has risen to the challenge, netting the winner in each of City’s last two matches. Having earned the praise of Manuel Pellegrini on the back of his performances, it seems that Dzeko will still earn game time but with Sergio Aguero also in the mix, the former’s lack of guaranteed starts from one game to the next will surely be enough to deter much investment, in spite of a 7.5 price tag.

Both Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck have been handed a 7.5 price tag but despite the change of manager at Old Trafford, in addition to the potential departure of Wayne Rooney, their game time looks limited unless David Moyes opts for a front two. Should Moyes roll out his preferred lone striker system, the duo will remain firmly behind Robin Van Persie in the pecking order; with a reliance on minutes off the bench and the occasional start, neither player appeals in the present situation.

Yoan Gouffran was utilised in “the hole” in a 4-2-3-1 and out wide up top in a 4-3-3 for Newcastle last time out. Despite being fielded through the middle in pre-season due to Papiss Cisse’s ongoing dispute with the club, the Frenchman is expected to revert to one of the aforementioned positions in the upcoming campaign – a security of starts may be likely but the 6.5 priced Gouffran should struggle for goals from a more withdrawn berth.

Norwich’s summer acquisitions,Gary Hooper and Ricky Van Wolfswinkel, come in at 6.5 and 7.0 respectively. Bearing in mind Chris Hughton has splashed out over £13m on the pair, their arrival certainly hints at a change in formation this term as the Canaries boss puts greater emphasis on attack and moves from last season’s 4-4-1-1 to a 4-4-2 in order to address the lack of attacking threat that harvested just 41 goals in his first year at the helm. With home games against Everton, Southampton and Villa, in addition to a trip to Hull, the Carrow Road club have a kind opening run of matches, with the creativity of Robert Snodgrass (6.5) offering us a real alternative in midfield as the Scot looks to better last term’s 152 point haul in his debut campaign.

Rickie Lambert remains favourably priced at Southampton. Having racked up 15 goals, eight assists and 32 bonus points in his first season in the top-flight, Lambert finished third top scoring forward on 187 points – in spite of his previous endeavours, he will take up just 7.5 of your budget and looks nailed-on, though his owners will be monitoring the club’s reported interest in Brazilian Leandro Damiao. Jay Rodriguez offers a cheaper route (6.0) into the Saints forward line and certainly came into form under Mauricio Pochettino in the second half of the season but with spot-kicks and a share of set-pieces also in his locker, Lambert makes a persuasive case for his potential inclusion on our three man frontlines. Given that the Saints’ first seven home games are against Sunderland, West Ham, Palace, Swansea, Fulham, Hull and Villa, plenty are expected to invest in their attack from the off.

Sunderland pair Steven Fletcher and Jozy Altidore will set you back 7.5 and 7.0 respectively. Recent report now suggest Fletcher may be set to miss the start of the new season as he continues to recuperate from the ankle injury that ended his previous campaign early – if he fails to return until September, new boys looks set to lead the line for the season opener, with Paolo Di Canio operating a 4-4-1-1 until Fletcher is fully fit. Certainly, having managed double figure goal returns in all three of his seasons in the Premier League, the Scot’s eye for goal could come to the fore once again upon his return, while Altidore arrives on the back of a season which harvested 31 goals and seven assists in 39 domestic matches for Dutch club AZ Alkmaar. The new boy certainly seems to have progressed from the player that struggled on loan at Hull in 2009/10 but with Arsenal, Liverpool, United, City, Chelsea and Spurs arriving at the Stadium of Light between Gameweeks 4-15, many will be giving the Black Cats a wide berth to begin with.

Similar to Altidore, Wilfried Bony racked up the goals with regularity in the Eredivisie last year. The new Swansea forward found the net 31 times and also supplied eight assists in just 30 league matches and looks virtually nailed-on as the lone forward for Michael Laudrup’s side – at 8.0 he’s kinder on the budget than Michu (9.0) in midfield and may even be handed spot-kicks. With United, Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal in the opening six Gameweeks, though, there are surely better options to shop for in terms of the schedule.

A mere five goals in 25 appearances highlights the Fantasy impact of Emmanuel Adebayor (8.0) in the season gone by. Having racked up 194 in 2011/12, the Togo international stuttered to a mere 72 points after making his loan move to the Lane a permanent one – while he still looks ahead of Jermaine Defoe in the pecking order for the lone forward role, Adebayor will surely be resigned to a sub role if Andre Villas-Boas manages to acquire Roberto Soldado from Valencia.

At 6.5, Shane Long is the priciest option on offer amongst West Brom’s forwards after producing eight goals and six assists in 2012/13. The Baggies entertain Southampton, Swansea and Sunderland in the first five and also travel to Fulham – a kind run of fixtures, no doubt, but with Nicolas Anelka priced at a mere 5.5, Long looks set to be overlooked by many due to the Frenchman’s more budget-friendly cost.

Finally, West Ham’s Andy Carroll is another who looks guaranteed for starts – providing he’s injury-free. Coming in at 7.5, Carroll has been handed an outstanding opening six fixtures (CAR, new, STO, sot, EVE, hul) and, after a slow start for Sam Allardyce’s side last term, picked up in performance over the last couple of months. If Carroll can recover from a heel problem in time, he could be quick out the blocks in light of such a favourable schedule but with question marks remaining over his fitness, Kevin Nolan offers a cheaper alternative (7.0) in the Hammers midfield for those looking to capitalise on the Hammers early schedule.

With Bales future in the PL in the spotlight I have been experimenting with dozens of combinations. My most recent is as follows:

    Foster

    Cole - Mertesacker - Collins

    Hazard - Walcott - Coutinho - Silva

    Bony - Lukaku - Hooper

    ...

    Boruc - Thomas - Clyne - Jagielka

I decided to draft Hooper in since he scored 31 times for Celtic last season and he costs £6.5 million so I feel he could be the steal of the season if he continues his form from last season. Bony also scored 31 in 30 games last season. Whilst Lukaku is not 100% nailed on I know he will have plenty of game time with ample time to net plenty of goals. The guy is built like a brick sh*t-house.

I like most of it...love Bony, think a lot of people are overlooking him and he will shock us against United...I would wait on Hooper though and I think there are better options then Jags(I have Dawson, people are also doubting him but I think he will start and is the captain after all)....oh I would pick Shaw over Clyne..not really a big deal but I just think he's cooler lol

Solid team until we reach the strikers.

Bony is not EPL proven and could struggle with their early fixtures.

Lukaku, as you know, is a rotation risk but a good punt.

Hooper is also unproven in the EPL and if they play 1 up top will be rotated with RVW.

Strikers count for a lot of your score and captain options and I feel yours is a bit risky for me personally. If it comes off though and the score as prolifically as they do in lower leagues then you're onto something.

Cheers for the feedback everyone, appreciate it.

Taking onboard some of the comments and have decided to downgrade Jagielka to Coleman and upgraded Hooper to Kone.

In the meantime I will keep my eye on the rotation of Hooper with RVW.

        Thanks again!

Disagree on your Bony assessment; that being said, I don´t own him yet. He´s not built like that for no reason, fit is fit, quick is quick...and strength is definitely strength I don´t care what you say. I hope Moyes doesn´t leave Rio out there in the second half to get eaten.

How to put this nicely ... ? Lessee ... umm ...

          You're wrong.

He's made tidy profits each year while keeping Arsenal in the CL places/Knockout stages on team's that are really sub-standard for that level ... all while playing a style that seeks to elevate itself from a Stoke Hoof-and-Stomp to a more Total Football vibe.

I hate Arsenal and Wenger I detest, personally. But he's been brilliant for that team and any knowledgeable supporter would agree.

you make it seem like arsenal is a minnow club with no money. what do fans care about profits. i guarantee you that any arsenal fan would rather have their club winning trophies rather than a club that makes ``tidy profits`` and plays what you call nice football which is hardly the case.

He's done we'll to get in the champions league very season despite selling his best 2 players the last 3 years, but his lack of tactical inspiration, motivation of the squad and failure to develop 90% of the many raw talents the club has invested in over the last 8 years must be frustrating for arsenal fans
His stubbornness and unwillingness to react to competition around him has limited his potential and is the cause of their trophy drought.
If Arsenal DO now have money to spend, is he the right man to do spend it? There's no way he's going at least till the end of the season, but Guus Hiddink is available....

What tactical alterations has he even introduced mid-game to make a difference?
Many ex-players have said his pre-match tactics are limited to simple directions.
He HAS sold his best players and brought in inferior replacements, ie. Nasri>Podolski, Song>Arteta, RVP>Giroud, Clichy>Santos
He HAS failed to develop many great young players, many of whom have succeeded away from Arsenal some not - Reyes, Vela, Frimpong, Senderos, Ramsey, Arshavin, Djorrou, Bendtner - need I go on?

Well, yes ... but the point is top 4 = CL ... #5 is not.

You do realize that team's get funded by the league according to their finish position in the table, yeah?

                    Nope.

                    You're a trophy-chaser, and that's why clubs shouldn't be run by supporters.

Bale will leave Tot because of no CL. What has happened to 'Pool lately? That first #6 year will see players leaving and others refusing to come in. The player quality drops. Oh, and the money drops, too. So the player quality drops.

And your question ignore the reality that it's a 4, 4, 4, 4 vs. a 6, 7, 5, 9 in re: Arsenal. Only Wenger has prevented the latter.

Arsenals best players have lined up at the exit door despite champions league involvement
It seems clear to me that they didn't feel like Arsenals ambitions matched their own - Clichy, Nasri, Fabregas, Song, RVP - all have won titles since leaving

I do understand the point about finance, but I think this is key point when Discussing Arsenal over the last 7 to 8 seasons.
Clearly many of their supporters and neutrals feel that there has been an over emphasis on and prioritisation of finances rather than on the pitch success and fan happiness

        Walcott.

Better fixtures and more proven FPL player.

My strategy this year is less risks at the start of the year. And don't use my WC to trade out all these failed punts in GW2 or 3.

That said, Coutinho is a solid pick. At 8.0 he would have been a must have. But I'm gonna wait and see their formation, Suarez move and impact etc first.

Coutinho had a solid last third of the season, and has the talent to do it again. Walcott is explosive and more proven.

If Suarez plays in the hole behind studge will that impact his output?

Coutinho is a good pick, it is just my belief that Walcott is the better pick to start the season.

        b) Walcott

Walcott is a proven in the EPL. Each year for the last 4 he has been getting more and more points. I'm not saying he will return a 14 goal and 13 assist season again this year but he should come close.

I think all this really boils down to which team makes a splash in the transfer market. If pool lose Suarez, there only target man becomes Sturridge. If Arsenal buys a top class forward if gives Walcott another target man to hit from the flanks.

Walcott is inconsistant. I rack my head every other week about taking him out because he will have weeks where he doesn't perform and Arsenal play poorly, but the second you take him out he will get a hat trick with 2 assist and 3 bonus.

Couti may be more important to pool then Walcott is to Arsenal but I still think Walcott will out score him.

Okay, first of all Bale is rumoured to be leaving so straight away there is a chance that his head might not be straight for the first few games, whereas RVP is obviously 100% commited to United.

The reason why Bale and RVP did so well last year was because they were the focal point, everyone gave the ball to them and expected the magic to happen. The same will stay true this season for RVP this season, but for Bale, not so much. With Spurs having already signed two new midfielders and will no doubt sign a big name striker, they will not need to rely on Bale every game. Hell, you could even go so as saying he might be rested once in a while.

Finally, if RVP does get off to a flyer, good luck trying to get a 14.5/15 mil striker without using you're WC 😉

Giroud is a solid pick if arsenal don't pick up a world class striker. He finished with 17 goals and 10 assists last year for arsenal and that was with being rotated and not getting his confidence up.

He was always in the right areas and troubled defences but he couldn't finish.

With his confidence up after this pre season and their early fixtures he will def be in my team I'd they don't sign someone.

Best midfielder for 6.5? Currently got:

    Vorm | Krul
    Zabaleta | O'Shea | Dawson | Reither | Clyne
    Hazard | Coutinho | Walcott | Mirallas | 6.5
    Benteke | Bony | Anelka

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

i personally would pick shaw ahead of clyne, just preferable. good midfield, i would pick 1 of snodgrass or zaha for last spot. upfront has a few risks imo, benteke has tough fixtures, bony i think will do well but unproven and anelka is old but may suprise us

I've been inspired by Reinaman and his picture gallery posts. I shall from this day forth be doing player profiles using Youtube clips to discuss the attributes of certain players. Hoping to put an end to the attitude that Youtube is a rubbish source when trying to understand a player's skill.

    Michael Carrick.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeOV9G00fTI

    A. 00:30 to 00:50 (Slide Tackling)
    B. 4:00 to 4:20 (Interceptions)
    C. 5:50 to 6:30 (Playmaking)
    D. 10:30 onwards (World class pass to Chicarito)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOePbJgnjQo

    E. Brilliant pass to Welbeck that few players would be able to do

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_P3JiSguaYk

    F. Beginning to 0:40 (Exquisite passing)
    G. 01:00 to 01:13 (Continued)
    H. 01:23 to 01:38 (Continued)
    I. 01:57 to 02:16 (Great vision)

I hope this will be considered a fair and accurate depiction of Carrick as a player and help highlight why he is considered by some to be a hugely underrated talent.

Any suggestions for my next player?

So from those clips we can understand Carrick to be a CDM/CM who protects the back four and helps to defend from opposition attacks whilst also being in a space that allows him to start up attacks for the United team himself. He has strong passing skills at a variety of ranges and even angles.

A, better fixtures. 9.0 for Michu at this point is not worth it - he might score against some of the teams but his distinct lack of bps will haunt you.

A has some punts, but it gives you the flexibility to play fixtures.

The points RvP got last year in the same fixtures:
    GW1 swa: 6
    GW2 CHE: 1
    GW3 liv: 6
GW4 CPL: 1 (by analogy, let's say it's GW4 at home vs relegated Wigan)
    GW5 mci: 6
    GW6 WBA: 6
Clearly, this is now a thing of the past and in this game we should look into the future. But as we know the best predictor of future is the past... and the past doesn't look good for a 14m player, does it?

The Wigan game he got rested for due to cup duties.

I think this is extremely likely that he gets rested vs CPL this year too. It's right after the international break (like it was vs Wigan), it's right before the first Champions League game and the City game after that.

Depends on BPs he gets too. 4 goals in 6 games is good, but it's not great if cheaper strikers are getting similar or more FF points..I still think the money you save by not getting RVP , if used smartly, will upgrade some good strikers or mids to some very good ones and your better off with 3 very good strikers giving consistent returns than one great one and 2 donkeys 😉

I totally agree and will therefore start RvP-less 🙂
