The Sun Dream Team – Selection Guide – Defenders

In our second selection guide for The Sun Dream Team, we turn our attention to the defence, casting an eye on the strategies involved in selecting a back four and the prime candidates on offer.

While the big points scorers can be found further up the field, with a quartet of defenders a pre-requisite for our lineups in The Sun Dream Team, we can ill-afford to neglect this area. As with our goalkeeper selection, we’re looking for regular starters first and foremost, although, as we’ll see, attacking instincts and the potential for goals is also key.

Before we begin looking at specific player options, let’s analyse the factors that govern our selection – including last season’s performance, the influence of cup fixtures and possible transfer window strategies.

The Strategies

Looking back at the previous campaign’s data, it’s clear that some familiar names from other Fantasy games also dominate in The Sun Dream Team. Leighton Baines’ status as the top defensive asset is compounded by his standing, here: he finished the season some 22 points ahead of his nearest rival in The Sun Dream Team, despite claiming just 12 clean sheets. Everton’s progress to the FA Cup semi-finals boosted another eye-catching Premier League season for Baines, who achieved a points per game stat of 4.5 – by far the most impressive amongst the top ranked defenders.

The Chelsea pairing of Branislav Ivanovic and David Luiz benefited from a successful Europa League campaign but turned in points per game numbers of 3.2 and 2.9 respectively – emphasising Baines’ efficiency. Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen was also aided by Europa League appearances and, overall, it’s significant that these top four defenders all claimed seven or more goals over the season – underlining the importance of targeting those capable of contributing at the sharp end.

While goals are clearly an important factor, we should also consider the role played by points gained for Star Man and 7+ ratings.

Baines, Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross and West Ham’s James Collins all topped the Star Man charts for defenders with modest totals of five awards. In 2011/12, Baines, along with Shawcross, were two of eight defenders tied on just three at the top. Compare this to Juan Mata’s 15, and the 13 accrued by both Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez last season, and it’s clear that, like goalkeepers, defenders struggle to overshadow their attacking team-mates when it comes to picking up man-of-the-match status.

Points from 7+ Sun Ratings are easier to obtain, however. There were ten defenders who earned 7+ ratings on 20 or more occasions last season, with Baines registering a hugely impressive tally of 32 from his 44 starts, gathering 96 points in this area. Vertonghen also gained heavily here – he collected 7+ ratings on 28 occasions from 48 starts, while Swansea’s Ashley Williams earned the same accolade in 25 of his 41 Dream Team starts.

As a rule, aside from the obvious benefit of scoring in a match, dominant central defenders and full-backs with strong attacking impetus are the most likely to earn a 7+ rating. Baines has featured in the top five rankings for 7+ ratings over the last four seasons – emphasising the importance of a consistent attacking presence. Similarly, both Shawcross and Williams have made the top ten for 7+ ratings in the past two seasons (with Star Man awards also a factor) – it’s obvious that the duo have something to offer in this area.

Cup Campaigns

There’s no question that a Cup run and, in particular, a European campaign can be big factors behind the number of appearances, and therefore the points tallies, of your defenders. In some cases, defensive stalwarts can be less prone to rotation than their attacking counterparts.

Vertonghen was a key benefactor of Tottenham’s Europa League campaign last term, earning 41 of his 164 points in Europe. Similarly, both Ivanovic and Luiz collected 17 and 25 additional points from Champions League and Europa League matches, with Liverpool’s Glen Johnson fetching 18 additional points.

We’re not talking big margins here, but clearly, targeting players with the potential of regular starts in European matches is another factor to consider.

Domestic cup runs can also be considered, but these are far trickier to anticipate, with rotation in the FA and Capital One Cups likely to be rife amongst those sides also competing in Europe. Typically, we’ll see all the Champions League contenders rotate across the board in the domestic cup competitions, leading us to look to those teams outside of these four, perhaps honing in on those sides who will field strong lineups in both domestic trophies – the likes of Everton, West Ham and Norwich, perhaps.

Window Watching

Planning transfer strategies according to The Sun Dream Team Transfer Window is crucial, not least in defence where you can tailor your tactics to give yourself the best opportunity of earning clean sheet rewards.

Transfer Window 1 opens with just three Premier League fixtures played out, on September 3. You’ll have three transfers to use before the Gameweek 4 on September 14 and, with a “use them or lose” policy, it’s wise to examine the options of signing defenders with this in mind.

It’s worth considering a policy of adopting one or even two slots in your back four that can be used to rotate a defender in and out in each Transfer Window according to fixtures and cup progress. Of course, such best laid plans can be ripped up by untimely injuries, however.

The Season Ticker is your key weapon here. We can easily identify those with the easier fixtures over the first three Gameweeks and, if you’re a member, you can use the “clean sheets” filter on the interactive ticker to find those defences most likely to earn shut-outs in this spell.

Our members can also tailor their ticker to examine the next Transfer Window that opens on November 12. By restricting the full Members Ticker to Gameweeks 3-11 you can analyse the difficulty of fixtures between Transfer Window 1 and Transfer Window 2, revealing some valid strategies and targets.

As an example, Southampton face home matches with West Ham, Crystal Palace, Swansea, Fulham and Hull all before Transfer Window 2, therefore, switching in a defender from St Mary’s in Transfer Window 1 for this spell looks an option.

With the Capital One Cup reaching the fourth round by October 28, you will be able to adjust your defence according to those teams who have made progress by the time Transfer Window 2 comes into effect.

It’s not so easy in Europe, with the Europa League and Champions League both on matchday four of the group stages by the time Transfer Window 2 opens.

The FA Cup Third Round does not take place until January 4, so progress here only becomes a factor for the Transfer Window 3 that opens on January 21.

The Players

Baines and Vertonghen are obvious draws once again this season with both set to offer a significant attacking threat and assured league starts. There are caveats that might curb investment prior to Transfer Window 1, however, with Baines’ future at Goodison still not uncertain and Vertonghen looking a doubt for the opening fixtures with a pre-season ankle injury. Once settled, however, both look hugely tempting as heavy-hitter investments with Vertonghen’s price tag of £5.5m, coupled with Tottenham’s kind schedule of fixtures up until Transfer Window 2, perhaps giving him the edge once fit.

Coverage of both Man City and United will be high on the agenda given their potential to harvest clean sheets, although the fixture list suggests that initial investment should go the way of Manuel Pellegrini’s side. City have Newcastle, Cardiff and Hull before the first transfer window, while United’s defence face both Liverpool and Chelsea in the same spell.

Vincent Kompany seems likely to be the most secure option in the City rearguard with both full-backs and the Belgian’s central defensive partner set to shuffle on the domestic front and in Europe. If you’re not spending on Joe Hart in goal, the City captain looks a shoo-in, at least until Transfer Window 1 swings open and the United defence comes into play.

That will also give us time to assess how David Moyes will approach his back four. With the likes of Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans and Phil Jones all available for the centre-half roles, the full-backs – Patrice Evra and Rafael, could be the safer routes to take. Jones, if he can cement a start, either in defence or midfield, looks the one to watch given his modest £4m price tag.

Chelsea’s defensive assets are difficult to sift through. Jose Mourinho will surely rotate at the back and, aside from Ashley Cole (£6.0), few look assured of regular starts in the league, let alone the cup competitions. Luiz, with a significant goal threat, looks to be the crown jewel but at £6.5m, his potential comes at a price. With a difficult start to the campaign (United, Everton, Tottenham and City all before Transfer Window 2), it may be wise to look elsewhere in order to assess Mourinho’s selection pattern.

Lower down the brackets, Ashley Williams, with a valuation of just £3.5m, has attracted more interest than any other defender – he’s been selected by over 31% of managers in The Sun Dream Team so far. Swansea’s Europa League campaign is presumably a factor, here, with Chico (£2.5) finding his way into over 21% of sides. Both could be set to plummet should Swansea falter in qualifying, although arguably, the duo have merits regardless of potential European returns.

Liverpool’s Kolo Toure looks a stronger option in the same bracket. Having figured prominently in pre-season and with Martin Skrtel’s future at Anfield far from certain, Toure looks exceptional value at just £3m. As we mentioned in our previous guide to The Sun Dream Team goalkeepers, there is real merit in acquiring both Toure and Simon Mignolet given their price and Liverpool’s strong early schedule.

Baines’ team-mate Seamus Coleman (£3m) offers an interesting alternative. Classed as a midfielder last season, Coleman is expected to claim the start on the right side of Roberto Martinez’s defence, either as a full-back or wing-back. That should see him contribute regularly to attack and draw plenty of 7+ ratings should Martinez start his Goodison career strongly.

In the budget bracket, West Ham’s defence offers new signing Razvan Rat for just £1m – a hugely attractive option going into Transfer Window 1 with the Hammers facing Cardiff and Stoke at Upton Park, with a trip to Newcastle sandwiched in between. Rat could be a keeper over the season given that price tag, although a transfer out to cash in on Southampton’s aforementioned run up to Transfer Window 2 looks a good tactic.

Full-backs Luke Shaw and Nathaniel Clyne can each be acquired for £2.5m and if Jose Fonte or Jos Hooiveld can secure at start, they can be snapped up for just £1m. Beyond those two clubs, Norwich City’s Michael Turner, at just £1.5m, looks another bargain. If he can gain continue to command starts alongside Sebastian Bassong, he should offer value, particularly if Chris Hughton’s side can translate their summer spending into a domestic Cup run.

My current team for GW1 is this:

    Mignolet

    Mertesacker/ Coleman/ Cole

    Hazard/ Walcott/ Gerrard/ Mirallas

    Rodriguez/ Aspas/ Lukaku

I have £2m in the bank

Do people think 3 from Chelsea is enough for the DGW or should I go for Benteke as well?

This will change if Bales stays mind

Exactly, with having 4 DGWers in, you'd have no choice but to. With 3, you'd get away with it. Your going to want to save it for emergency fixture changes.

Not a bad plan tho. Raising the value of your team and getting the in form players early sets you up pretty well for the season. But you will most likely end up taking hits further down the line (double game weeks, etc).

Played my usual 5-a-side last night and there was a NKOTB.
We're all aulfellas and this lad is all 19 and stuff. Full of flicks and flicky hair. You can just imagine him under an oak tree on campus singing sensitive guitar drivel surrounded by chicks that are looking for a safe option and nerds from the Uni role playing society.
After he'd skinned me 15 times I just fouled him in a friendly like manner. Y'know, just a shirt pull with a hint of a nipple tweak.
He goes mad and starts sulking. Doesn't try another flick and keeps going off for water breaks.

    hehe.

Life in the old dog yet.

I'd say I could pull his girlfriend too if I wanted to. 😉

    Morning all,

Getting towards a team i am happy with but having a problem with my last midfielder-

    Boruc Mannone
    Cole Collins Clyne Chester Parr
    Walcott Haz Nolan Snod ?????
    RVP Lambert Dzeko

    6m

Cole to Mert will happen, giving me 7m (hopefully).

    1. 4.5 the last mid slot, after Cole to Mert then Lambert/ Dzeko can become Sturridge/ 9.0
    2. Any player into mid slot, after Cole to Mert, 'any player' to Mirales
    3. Other????

    Thanks in advance guys

Are you all ready for a power cut. I'm not @@ just had one. Glad I had the flashlight on my phone!
Funny though It kind of wakes your senses up to many different things when it happens.

Seriously made me think about the things going on in the world atm. and I'm not getting off on one or anything but we really should be thankful for our lot in a geographical and fairly level headed land.

Hope it stays that way. P.S need to buy a generator.

rvp is good, jrod and anelka might be ok but they're both too cheap. You won't be able to do a straight swap if you decide to swap them out / one of them gets injured.

Following on from my series of video player analysis, so far including Carrick (http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/07/30/friendlies-round-up-monday/?hc_page=2#hc_comment_5130830), Van Ginkel & Bony (http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/07/30/friendlies-round-up-monday/?hc_page=9#hc_comment_5132117), I thought I would introduce a theme to my posts and for now that will be the “surprise package”. These are players I feel will rise above expectation and have a step up in their season long performance.

Rooney has had many people question his ability due to his performance last season, with many doubting his entitlement to a world class label and his ability to perform both as a striker and also as a top drawer footballer in a more general sense. It should be kept in mind however, that Rooney has only broken the 20 goal barrier twice in his career but has consistently beaten the 20 goals + assist threshold (four seasons in a row & 6 out of his 7 seasons in the PL). Last season was no exception and with less minutes played than all of his previous seasons he still managed to serve us with 12 goals and 10 assists. No laughable tally for a player supposedly on the Wayne.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cr3wa-o0mc0

    A. 00:15 to 00:24 (Classy back heel assist)

    B. 00:40 to 00:51 (Solid crosses leading to goals)

    C. 01:34 to 01:47 (Supplying RVP from a slightly more withdrawn role)

    D. 02:06 to 02:16 (Fantastic long range pass to RVP)

    E. 02:30 to 02:41 (Integral to build up play in final third)

    F. 03:21 to 03:27 (Another example of his crossing ability leading directly to an assist)

    G. 03:28 to 03:34 (More fantastic link up play with RVP)

    H. 03:46 to 03:55 (World class pass played with ease from deep into the feet of Valencia)

    I. 04:30 to 04:36 (Commitment to defensive duties)

    J. 05:03 to 05:14 (Great examples of his importance to United’s attacking movements from a withdrawn CF role)

    K. 05:24 to 05:31 (Absolutely ridiculous set up for what should have been a spectacular Paul Scholes volley)

    L. 05:35 to 05:45 (Again strong link up play with RVP)

    M. 05:54 to 06:20 (Architect to 2 of Kagawa’s 3 goals for the win against Norwich)

    N. 06:28 to 06:52 (THAT pass of the season that helped seal the PL for United against Villa)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjYlC6zBpnQ

    A. 00:15 to 00:25 (Sharing the defensive workload)

    B. 01:04 to 01:09 (Great cross onto RVP’s head)

    C. 01:51 to 02:05 (Good control whilst the ball was in the air before taking a quick shot on goal: sharpness/attacking instinct)

    D. 02:14 to 02:23 (Great link up play before tucking the ball away in typical striker fashion)

    E. 02:27 to 02:32 (Smart finish against City in the Manchester Derby, leaving Joe Hart left for dead)

    F. 02:37 to 02:42 (Another solid finish in the Manchester Derby)

    G. 02:48 to 03:01 (Another strong finish for a striker)

    H. 03:08 to 03:18 (And again)

    I. 03:20 to 03:38 (Fantastic finish from distance, can grab goals from a deeper attacking area)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJb_RfgR_ow

    A. 03:00 to 03:20 (Cheeky reminder of his class)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8LxaCIVDXU

    A. 01:53 to 02:00 (Ball played into near post rather than far post by Valencia, Rooney was also available & ready to tuck it away)

    B. 03:00 to 03:04 (Again ready to take on a shot at goal from a tasty position. That chance came down to a decision in the end which paid off for RVP. However, it is quite possible that Rooney could have stolen the headlines in this instance)

    C. 03:23 to 03:30 (Again in a fantastic goal scoring position only for the ball to travel to the feet of RVP. Unlucky here.)

    D. 04:44 to 04:48 (A better cross could have led to a direct effort on goal from close range)

So what can we glean from this visual presentation of Rooney’s season? Well what seems obvious is that Rooney is still very capable of getting the goals to match and beat other great – but lesser – goal scoring talents such as Defoe and Ba. But as well as having a reasonably strong season as a striker, Rooney has thrived in United’s attack from a more withdrawn position too. He has been integral to their build up play in the final third and is very often involved in the final few touches of the ball before a goal – much like David Silva in his breakthrough season at City. He thus is very much a world class CF who can take on a goal scoring responsibility whilst helping his team in their attacking endeavours even when behind the ball itself. Furthermore, Rooney has shown flashes of brilliance in his link up play with RVP and there is the hope that his second season could see him thrive as the supply man to the lethal Dutchman whilst being a goal scoring talent in his own right. It should also be noted that RVP also had numerous instances in the season where he scored a goal Rooney could have scored if the ball dropped to him at the exact time it came to RVP or another player in the box, I was only able to find a few examples of this as it would be too arduous a task to sift through every other United player’s highlights. Having already compared him to Silva, I do not think it would be completely unreasonable to compare him to Valencia or Navas in his crossing ability and he should be able to provide ammunition for goals both from set pieces and from drifting runs out wide. It should be noted that he should benefit from Vidic’s return to fitness as the Serbian has a tendency to capitalise from set piece goal scoring opportunities.
Without going on too much of a tangent I do personally believe that Moyes made a bit of a mess which was publicly misconstrued as him downplaying Rooney’s importance to the team. I feel as though Moyes, as any manager worth his salt would, recognised that RVP was United’s main outlet for goals whilst Rooney was the overall engine of the United attack who also could score goals and has the possibility to take on a greater goal scoring responsibility should RVP get injured.

Will he be in my team from GW 1? No (partly because of the DGW but also because of my plan to get RVP). Do I believe he could be in for a great season and make his price look generous come the end of the season? Of course, hopefully he doesn’t have injury problems like the last season.

Finally it should be worth pointing out that whilst a reasonable percentage or players see Aguero as one to keep an eye on, this out and out striker produced only 12 goals and 3 assists in comparison to Rooney’s 12 goals and 10 assists. Even Suarez only scored 11 goals and 6 assists in 2544 minutes (compared to 2014 for Rooney in the 2011/2012 season). For two players who many argue to have had disappointing seasons, Rooney certainly looks to be a safer and smarter choice as an FPL prospect when taking rotation and previous season performances into account. Will he ever break the 20 goal barrier again at United? I personally believe he will not, however, as long as he is not benched (come on, would Moyes really bench him for enough games to make him the new Dzeko?) Rooney will provide a potent source of goals and assists combined to serve up a tasty prospect at just £10.5m (he was even £11.8m when he ended the 2010/2011 season with 11 goals and 11 assists – stats which are comparable to the season that has just passed).

Will repost this tomorrow but will leave it here tonight in case anybody wants to have a “quick” read and lend me their thoughts. Thank you.

I've never questioned Rooney's ability and don't need Ytube clips to confirm that. He's top notch, I've always thought that yet somehow he's fallen below the truly "Top 3 in the world" player that he could have become (I don't know why).

Small changes. Two or three if my paragraphs were squashed together here due to formatting issues when transferring from word. Also I said led to an assist when I should have said "led to a goal". Might search for and throw in a few extra clips of his good positioning but being unlucky in not getting the chance to score.

May even add on my planned posts on Cisse and Southampton's defensive prospects after their two new signings.

Yes 10.5 is a very kind price for what he can do. Even if he stays at United I see no reason why he can't be an adequate alternative to RVP. He will play in the #10 role most of the time for United but thats still going to allow him to get in the box regularly scoring goals.

Yeah I feel he was on the cusp of challenging Rvp last season. Even matched him in fpl points output when they played together. This season he may completely outshine rvp on value plus captaincy option combined due to that massive difference in price. captaining Rooney or sturridge is a much more potent choice than rvp and anelka!

Southampton and West Ham 38/38 +1 Defender

A lot of teams have Collins and one of Shaw/Clyne, I've just done some research to find out when both teams face a top 6 team in the same week, it occurs 8 times over the season

Furthermore, I've checked out a few options over the other teams which look decent 3rd defender options if you're planning on having two big hitters + this rotation +1 other. the results are as follows:

    collins, bad fixtures 7,8,12,15,17,18,23,31,33,34,37,38

    shaw/clyne bad fixtures 5,8,12,13,15,17,19,20,23,28,31,33,38

    so 8/12/15/17/23/31/33/38 need cover

    Saylor(NEW) has LIV / NOR / mnu / cpl / nor / CPA / MNU /liv

    Ward(CPL) has FUL / hul / CAR / NEW / HUL / new / car / ful

    Amorebieta(FUL) has cpl / SWA / AVL / MNC / swa / mnc / avl / CPA

      The BIG problem is (in my opinion) ;

All these rotations are all well and good. But there's no way you'll stick with one for the whole season or even half a season.

There'll be an annoying non-starter in there for sure. Or an injury. Or a suspension.

Then what? Replace him with another defender from the same team to keep your carefully researched rotation intact? No, I think not. Wilson, Demel, Clyne, Shaw, Davis etc. all emerged last season after a few weeks as a good option for 4 to 4.5m and we all jumped on them.

What's to say the same won't happen this year?

Cheap rotators = OVERRATED (in my opinion, of course!

i'm just trying to avoid early wildcard and get 50+ points further down the line with a wildcard then.

I agree of course, that you have to jump on the cheapies, but shaw/Collins are nailed on and Southampton and west ham look to have a reasonable chance of clean sheets.

Newcastle/Palace/Swansea/West Brom/Fulham, there should be a good 4m/4.5m in there somewhere so it's worth bearing in mind.

But my point still holds true. If you jump on a cheapie from another team then your rotation is screwed.
I don't have an alternative, btw 😉 , and agree on avoiding the early WC.

Good luck anyway whatever you go with

Sometimes you can find other cheap defenders that still fill the void and rotate well. Even if they are from a different team.

Why am I not seeing any teams with Baines?
The guy outscores every 7,5m midfielder in the game even 8-9m midfielders. Only 10 players scored highter than him last season and they all cost 9m + expect for Lambert. You get Baines for 7.5

    Best value IMO

    First RMT

    Cech
    Zaba Merte Clyne Collins Chester
    Hazard Yaya Mirallas Snodgrass Thomas
    RVP Lukaku JRod

4.5 in bank, still need backup keeper. Planning on keeping Cech. I was thinking Marshall, but I'm open to suggestion. 4.0 instead maybe? Let me know what you think about this lot.

I would wait on Zaba and see how City's defense plays under new management. Similarly, I would wait on to see where Yaya plays, if he plays as a #10, yes, if not, then no. Cech is overpriced imo, I'd stick with Mig to be honest.

        This is what I had:

        Mig Marshall or other
        Ivan/Luiz Merte Clyne Collins Chester
        Hazard Walcott Silva Koren Thomas
        Van Persie Lukaku Anelka

        Is that better you think?

Could use a 4.0 goalie and get JRod instead of Anelka

Anyone else surprised with all the rmt and high ownership of sturridge? 9 mill is a rip off and wud have expected about £7.5. The guy gets basically no assists and is hardly prolific. Injury and bench prone. Much better options for 9 mill and just above it, I can't understand the popularity at that price tbh. He'll do ok but fantasy fools gold!

Maybe it's cos the few times I've had him he's failed to deliver, but he just never strikes me as a great pick. His hat trick end of last season is only standout game I can really remember. Wud feel much more comfortable with berbatov or lambert in my team (and at moment have neither) for 1.5 million less. I mean more he's bad value then a bad footballer more I guess.

as a Spurs fan, i wouldn't let go of Bale for any price. well i know im not in the position to be offered a buckload of money, but Spurs is in for something big if they keep Bale. people would want to join Spurs just because of Bale. imagine what would happen with the name of Spurs if Bale stays for atleast a couple of seasons more. he's only 24 and he has stolen many headtitle of the sports news, he's only 24 when the talent buyer RM bid for a world record fee of 85mil, even more than Ronaldo(whom had won ballon d'or, CL).

so as a massive Spurs fan, i would suggest to build great talents AROUND Bale not WITHOUT Bale.

sorry just clearing my mind out, still gutted the fact that we sold the future star centre-back and future of England to Cardiff, still wondering why though. .

Im not sure no bale and rvp is such a bad tactic. Considering it myself looking at where the odds on points are coming from gw1-3. But u seriously need to sort that attack out. Downgrade ure gks and go with a decent mid/low combo or a high/4.0. Also downgrade one of ure mids and get a stand out attacker!
