Scout Report – Willian

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho added to his multitude of attacking midfield talents this afternoon with the acquisition of Willian from Russian outfit Anzhi on a five-year contract. Having undergone a medical with Tottenham last week, the 25-year-old’s change of heart sees him roll up to Stamford Bridge instead, with the Blues shelling out a reported £32m for his services. The Brazilian is the fourth player to arrive at the club this summer, following the capture of Andre Schurrle, Marco Van Ginkel and Mark Schwarzer:

After receiving a work permit earlier today, the midfielder sat down with the club’s official website to talk about his expectations for the season ahead:

“I intend to help the team as much as I can in order to be successful. I want to train hard, work hard and give everything to earn my place in the side. This is a very strong team with great players. I hope I am going to start matches very strongly and help the team do the best we can, whether that’s through scoring goals, creating chances or defending.”

The History

A product of the Corinthians youth system, Willian’s career began back in 2006. Over the course of two seasons, he produced two goals and a pair of assists from 16 first-team appearances before making his way to Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer of 2007.

After a slow start (two assists in 20 appearances in his first term), the playmaker gradually found his feet and registered 10 goals and 10 assists over 51 matches in the next two years. The following couple of campaigns saw Willian flourish as a creative force – while he only notched eight goals over 20101/11 and 2011/12, his 26 assists were crucial to his side’s success.

Last year harvested two goals and six assists from 14 appearances for Shakhtar before Anzhi came calling midway through the season, with a €35m too good to refuse. Willian managed a single goal and four assists over 11 matches but with the Anzhi owners keen to offload many of their big-money buys, he was sold on after just seven months at the club.

The Prospects

The Brazilian’s arrival merely compounds matters as Fantasy managers attempt to get a handle on Mourinho’s selection policy. So far, Eden Hazard and Oscar have started all three of Chelsea’s league games under the Portuguese boss but, as Mourinho’s decision to field Schurrle up top for the opening 60 minutes against United on Monday showed, any given Gameweek has the potential to hand us an unexpected surprise .

With Kevin De Bruyne and Juan Mata also vying for contention, many may even choose to simply opt out of snapping up a Blues midfielder. The numerous options available to the Chelsea boss hint at a degree of rotation potentially greater than any other club in the league, with plenty of more secure options on offer elsewhere.

Tellingly, Mourinho spoke of ”mobility” being key to his starting selection at Old Trafford – perhaps a damning indictment of the likes of Demba Ba and Romelu Lukaku but certainly positive for Willian. A pacey, dynamic player, he was mainly utilised on the left of a 4-2-3-1 at Shakhtar but shifted to the right and centre of the same tactical set-up at Anzhi, offering options right across the three attacking midfield positions.

As the stats showed, Willian is hardly renowned for his goalscoring prowess, though, with five strikes his highest haul in any season over those years in the Ukraine. Likely to come in around 8.5 to 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), it seems that the Brazilian could be alternated on a game-to-game basis, either starting or climbing off the bench with no real consistency of selection – Mourinho’s use of Schurrle, De Bruyne and Mata has already proven we can take nothing for granted.

Frustratingly, a move to Tottenham would surely have handed us a real contender for our five-man midfields. A role in “the hole” behind Roberto Soldado in light of Gareth Bale’s expected departure looked a hugely enticing proposition; at Stamford Bridge, however, Willian, for all his undoubted abilities, simply looks in danger of getting lost amongst the crowd.

which pair do people prefer once Suarez is back

    a) Sturridge and Dzeko
    b) Sturridge and Benteke
    c) Suarez and Dzeko

Suarez and Tekkers is unlikely to be affordable

          Isn't Soldado's just as good?

4 goals in 3 games for Spurs, and yet to even find his shooting boots yet. He will be golden this year.

The Big Question For Spurs and for FPL investment in Spurs players: can AVB manage this team and get them playing together well?

    Lost Gareth Bale

Gained Erik Lamela, Roberto Soldado, Paulinho, Etienne Capoue, Nacer Chadli, Vlad Chiricheș and maybe one or two more.

That's a lot of new first team faces.

Can't see why not. Gives him a squad of players he wants to work with to work multiple formations/tactical plans whilst overall keeping up his ethos of a high pressing incisive game.

I also think you should discard the idea of first team for Spurs on the whole - as you would with Chelsea, City and United. Squad game now.

I was wondering what everyone's opinion on Robin Van Persie was as there seems to be two clear paths to take...

Some may see him as an essential to the side due to his consistency making him an easy captain option most weeks therefore saving the headache that many are having this week for example.

However others may take the view that his price tag is too high and a better team can be created in his absence.

I'm stuck on what to do so any help would be appreciated.

I'm going without RVP because he is very expensive, and there are plenty of other consistent performers. I trust Walcott for regular points against anyone, and I also trust Sturridge, Benteke, Giroud, Michu, etc against weak opposition.

If Spurs buy Eriksen it will be the first time they've actually had to pay for anyone.

Bale having paid for the ones already in and their transfers out having paid for Alen Halilovic and Chiriches once confirmed.

they will have spent more than they've recouped, which is why i can't see eriksen happening. bale's transfer fee may pay for about 5 players, their combimed wages will blow his out the water. tottenham are still a club with not the biggest match day revenue and no CL football

        No it's about the same,

Transfer fee for Gareth Bale = Erik Lamela, Roberto Soldado, Paulinho, Etienne Capoue and Nacer Chadli

Transfer fees for Parker, Huddlestone, Caulker, Dempsey = Halilovic and Chiriches

Including those, they've also got the likes of Gallas and Bentley off the payroll.

Wages may have gone up slightly although not by much I suspect but the TV deal has also gone up.

this then is a reason to reign it in a bit. just look at the impact on arseal, despite their billionaire owner. i respect spurs as i think they'll be closer to the arsenal way than the man city and chelsea way. backing the players you have and looking for value (already enjoying townsend and rose's cameos this season). not spending crazy fees on guys like bentley and wilson palacios.
bale could be their anelka and fund all of this. i love the anelka story, bought for 500k gives them a little push over the line to win the title, sold for £23m very soon after, they then build a new training ground and buy thierry henry with that money. final piece in the jigsaw, get enough success to get the green light for the stadium. long term future secured, if the fans have had a tough time since as a result of cut-backs. bale could be massive in the history of tottenham. the bigger issue they have now (which arsenal didn't in 2004) was chelsea and man city's riches, top 4 was guarented for arsenal so worht the gamble, now it's much more crowded. problem for liverpool too tbf, a bit stuck if they want a stadium move

Well, I think the move for Erikson is the belief that they need a no.10 and while I agree that Townsend and Rose should be given a chance I can see why they might want him. Besides he's another very young player that will only get better and be worth more.

Arsenal's problem seems to generate more from their ownership issue and the fact that Kronke doesn't seem too keen on spending money rather than making it.

Don't think Spurs have the same issue, they'll build the stadium either way. Pretty sure Arsenal still could have spent money in previous seasons but Spurs really needed to do a lot more to improve their squad than Arsenal did.

Wages will have gone up by loads, surely...

Erik Lamela, Roberto Soldado, Paulinho, Etienne Capoue and Nacer Chadli (Halilovic and Chiriches)

          vs

Bale, Parker, Huddlestone, Caulker, Dempsey, Gallas Bentley... anyone else they shift.

The former group will be earning a fair wedge more than the likes of Parker, Caulker etc

Not sure about that one Bentley alone was on a ridiculous wage and the likes of Bale, Parker, Gallas and Dempsey will also have been some of the top earners at the club. But still, as I said the increased revenue from TV this season will have allowed them to raise the wage structure.

They're being really sticky with wages, the new CB Chicheres is only on 1.2million a year! So you may underestimate Spurs.

Planning my first hits of the season.

    2FT- Hazard+Lukaku+Grandin+Olsson +3.5m>>>>Taarabt+Rvp/Aguero+Morrison(Whm)+Collins (-8).

1.Should I make these transfers or some of them?
2.Aguero/Rvp? Already have dzeko and Silva.
    3.Defense is Toure,Coleman,Chester,Moxey and Olsson.

    Please help.
    Thanks.

c nolan - free cash for a possible RVP incorporation should I want him gw4 w/o WC
