The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

The Premier League’s bizarre shortage of goals continues as Sunday’s headline acts muster just two strikes between them. It saw both Olivier Giroud and Daniel Sturridge maintain their goal-a-game records, whilst at the Hawthorns, Swansea struck twice, leaving the Baggies without a goal in their three league outings.

The Game Changer

Giroud’s moment of quality proved the difference in a disjointed North London derby. A sublime flicked finish from a smart Theo Walcott centre was the Frenchman’s third goal in as many league games as he goes on establishing his top-flight reputation.

While we’re anticipating arrivals at the Emirates before the window slams shut, it’s fair to say that if a world class striker fails to saunter through the Emirates door, then Fantasy interest in the impressive Giroud will accelerate.

Currently priced at just 8.6 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Giroud is owned by over 13% of managers following an outstanding pre-season that saw him strike eight goals. He has taken that form into the season and is not only accepting his goalscoring opportunities with confidence, his all-round play as Arsenal’s centre-forward has undoubtedly improved. It remains to be seen if that’s enough to discourage the lesser-spotted Emirates chequebook from fluttering in the direction of the Arsenal attack.

The Underused

The fixture computer did few favours for Swansea’s Fantasy prospects over the opening two matches. A home clash with the champions and an away trip to Spurs returned just a single goal but, today at the Hawthorns, we saw Michael Laudrup’s side kick-start their season and remind us of the talent they have within the ranks.

Ben Davies was a member of our team of the season last term after a full campaign at left-back generated eight clean sheets, a goal and two assists for the initial value of just 4.0. Priced at 5.0 this time round, he’s been largely ignored but will end the Gameweek as the top scoring defender having cracked the opening goal in the 2-0 win over West Brom. Team-mate Pablo Hernandez failed to make the anticipated impact in his first season but promises improvement this time around. Goal and assist returns today will earn him a couple of bonus and see him rank as the top midfielder in the Gameweek; at just 6.0, the classy Spaniard – who has now played a part in all three of his side’s strikes this term – could yet be a prospect for those who cannot stretch funds to cover Michu.

With Liverpool and Arsenal at home in the next three, the tests keep coming for Laudrup’s men but today’s result reminded Fantasy mangers that we’ll need to monitor progress at the Liberty and be ready to pay attention once the schedule eases from Gameweek 8.

The Selection Poser

Kolo Toure’s absence from the Liverpool lineup through a groin injury was perhaps expected, although noises from Anfield prior to the match gave his Fantasy owners some hope that he’d be available. It wasn’t to be.

With the injury played down by Brendan Rodgers, Toure could easily be in contention following the international break. However, it appears he may be about to slip down the pecking order by then. According to reports and Rodgers himself, Liverpool have agreed fees for defenders Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori. The signing of Sakho from Paris Saint-Germain, looks particularly daunting for Toure owners. The 23-year-old is a French international and is said to have commanded a fee of somewhere in the region of £18 million. It seems unlikely that Liverpool have paid that kind of money to have him play second fiddle to Toure. Sakho can be deployed at left-back but with Aly Cissokho recently joining the club as back-up to Jose Enrique, long-term, it looks as though Toure’s position is under real threat. The former City man is currently owned by over 9% of Fantasy Premier League managers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

They'd have to be signing someone before tomorrow. They will be mad not to do so, specially if they are intent on not playing Kagawa. Otherwise I don't think they will be challenging.

So decided against WCing for the time being.

    Silva + Dzeko > Brady + RVP (-4)

    Gives me:

    Migs
    Coleman Collins Murner Yanga-Mbiwa Ward
    Walcott Coutinho Mirallas Brady Williams
    RVP Benteke Soldado

    Look ok?

I think I'm gonna stay patient and wait for gw6 to bring in rvp.. Otherwise i'll have to downgrade walcott to a 6.5 mid and upgrade Aguero to rvp with a -4 hit.. not ideal.. right?

      Gonna play a 4-3-3

      Migs
      Coleman Collins Ivanovic Whittaker -Chester
      Coutinho Silva Brady -Tonev Colback
      RVP Benteke Soldado

Might move Coutinho next transfer window for Ozil if he goes and I have 1.5 itb so I will also move Whittaker for a 6.0 defender like Cole or Vidic.

got about 1% of FPL players here

around 16,000 in the non-members league

28,000 would be 1% of all FPL players, so you still have 12,000 of lee way to account for those who read but don't join league

Plus, it was always my plan to get him GW4. Some posters (Evs and CF) disregarded their plans and got him a week early away to a stubborn Pool.

Stand out.. They were playin away from home and looked like the home side though. Considerin bps favor goal scoring mids over assisting mids i reckon he's gonna be a gr8 punt. The thing about Bony is he plays with his back towards goal most games laying the ball back for michu et all more than trying to score himself. It's helping michu and even hernandez and i reckon it's gonna be the case over the season too. if Pool dint look so good defensively i'd be all over him this week

why do Arsenal keeping buying the wrong type of midfielder?

Arsenal have won nothing since Patrick Vieria left the club. Argueably they have gone backwards since Song left........enough said.

They need a beast or two to blend with the undoubted quality they have - will Ozil really improve Arsenal?

I reckon if this lot got regular game time together, they'd become imense - it would be great for England too, except Woy wants to play 4-4-2 🙂

I genuinely dont think you need Ozil - you need a Toure, Dembele, Paulihno type or two to sit behind this lot.

I think a player like Ozil is fantastic for Arsenal. There is no striker out there that we could get at the moment who would be enough of an improvement on Giroud. I had high hopes for Giroud before this season and he has delivered.

Our first preference should be a strong DM. You don't even need to spend much money. Gustavo would have been good, but apparently he wanted 130k a week (which is only 5-10k less than Ozil is apparently coming for), which is ridiculous for someone of his calibre.

Another CB would be great too.

Yeah he actually has some goal threat and is really positive. I was disappointed with Moyes lineup against Liverpool, it lacked any real cutting edge. It required Nani or Kagawa to be on the field to try and ignite something.

      Neither.

Arsenal's defence still feels very young and lacking experience. Any of them (maybe Mertesacker somewhat less so) seems liable to implode, i.e. do something silly when under pressure. For the same budget I think Nastasic, Toure or even Ferdinand would be a more reliable pick in the LONG term.

Arsenal had a really high level of clean sheets last year though and Merts is a BAPS magnet. Toure might lose his place now with new signings but I think Nastasic is fantastic value, though I would choose Zab. City don't look comfortable in defence without Kompany.

I agree with your assessments of the Toure situation. Besides the micro-observations I cited above, some macro-properties also discourage me from investing in Arsenal's defense: 1) their cleansheet potential has been vulnerable against teams with good general attack (i.e. the rest of the top 6 teams) as well as against teams with very traditional British-style airball tactics (i.e. West Ham, Stoke, Moyes-era Everton, etc.); 2) they have an extremely thin lineup, which while is great news for identifying starters, also presents significant volatility to their cleansheet potential should any one of the back five or a holding midfielder get injured prior or during the game. I think if Arsenal's defence plays the entire season like they did for the last third of last season, then they could represent good value. Otherwise the volatility in cleansheet potential makes a strong case against acquiring their defensive assets.

For me - he is just too much. 13.5 would be more fair.

Last season he was 13m and there wasn't as many strikers around 9m worth owning. It was pretty much Suarez + cheapies like Benteke, Lambert and Lukaku. This season there's barely a cheap striker worth owning + Sturridge, Benteke, Soldado, Giroud have entered the frame.

Always considered, but the price is never justifiable. If the heavy hitting midfielders were on form Van Persie would be a liability at this stage. In contrast if the 9.0 strikers were drawing blanks, he'd be a must. But for now the debate continues.

Very meh. 42 points, shipped out Dzeko and Toure for Giroud and Murner in response, wanted to catch the price rise.

Haopy with RvP, Tekkers and Giroud up front but I need to see something from Coutinho and Miralles soon.

      Hw did you get on?

        not bad. solid moves.

48pts. was counting on one of shaw or toure to play but neither did which hurt me.

Looked gr8 admittedly but had 1 shot on target and 1 key pass so he's statistics were not exactly stand out. Still a good buy though but dont expect too much. Really rate teh guy and reckon he's in for a 140+ season this year though

    Aguero Giroud Soldado

Not a gameweek i was expecting. Scored 51 Captaining Aguero.
Not sure about Silva and aguero. 🙁 what do you guys think?

Or go 2x 4.5m. Clyne Collins for example

I'll have Sturridge until I see Suarez's mindset and position. There was talks of him being moved out wider with Coutinho playing behind Sturridge.

That is the most likely scenario and Suarez has played out wide previously and put in some great performances.

If we do secure Moses as well and keep Suarez, we will have a few good different options.

I would keep Soldado for at least the next 2 tbh...

This whole "Giroud hasn't scored outside of London" thing will certainly be put to the test in 3 out of the next 4 games, that's for sure...

I do, however, think you should get Mignolet as soon as possible...

If Flamini plays more games, Arsenal will get a lot of clean sheets.
He really works his socks off through out the game, has a better defensive positioning than Arteta and I think he should start more games ahead of JW10 even though Jack Wilshere is my favorite player.

Flamini back in for us is a great piece of business from Arsene, I'm delighted with that...

One decent strengthening acquisition and I'll be happy...

Ozil would be a great signing, the lad is still only 24...

Worth it I think. I Still have Mirallas in my team for now with 0.9 in the bank. Wont be making the transfer just yet, but who do you think would be a good replacement. I'm thinking maybe Lampard, even with the risk of rotation.
