Scout Report – Mamadou Sakho

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers continued to strengthen his defence on Monday with the acquisition of Mamadou Sakho from Paris Saint-Germain. Having signed a long-term contract, the 23-year-old arrives for a reported £15m fee in what is a real statement of intent from the Merseyside outfit as they look to kick on from their 100% start to the season.

One of eight summer signings for the Reds, Sakho reckons that, despite the significant outlay for his services, he’ll have to battle to nail down a regular role:

“In a large club, having competition is something you expect. To get the best out of any player, you need to have competition. Competition doesn’t give me any worries. Competition makes the team grow and makes the club grow because that’s the objective and the goal of everyone here. I’ve been at Melwood for a day and it’s very good. The training areas are impressive and everything is in place for the players to keep in top condition. I’m delighted to be here. I’d like to thank everyone for the welcome. I came here because the project that is in place at Liverpool interests me. I’m really looking forward to playing my first game.”

The History

A produce of the PSG youth academy, Sakho’s career at the Ligue 1 club kicked off back in 2007. Having made 12 appearances in his first season, the six foot two defender cemented a role as a first-team regular the following term and over the course of his six years in the French capital, played a total of 151 league games, scoring seven times and supplying a pair of assists.

Sakho – who can also fill in at left-back – was voted the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year in 2010/11 and was a crucial part of the side that won the French title under Carlo Ancelotti in the season gone by. He has also represented his country at youth level a total of 11 times and has turned out for the French senior side on 14 occasions.

The Prospects

Despite Kolo Toure’s impressive couple of opening displays and Martin Skrtel’s resilient showing against United last weekend, it seems almost inevitable that both will fall behind Sakho in the pecking order. The Ivorian’s current groin problem has already cast doubts over his ability to remain injury-free and it may well be that Rodgers sees him as experienced back-up option for Sakho or Agger over domestic cup matches, while Skrtel now looks fourth-choice, having been benched for Toure over the pre-season programme.

In a telling interview with the club’s official website, Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre revealed the characteristics that persuaded Rodgers to pursue the 23-year-old:

“Sakho is a top, top centre-half and that adds to the great centre-back pairings that we have already and it will give that depth. He’s an important marquee signing for us. One of the things that Brendan said was that he wanted to add real depth and strength and Sakho is a Champions League player of great pedigree and experience. I think it’s difficult to imagine anyone filling Jamie Carragher’s shoes, but what the arrival will do is bring huge strength and experience to the squad. I think importantly, when you see him on the pitch, you see that he’s a leader and he’s very strong. The manager wanted to bring leaders and people who could dig in when needed. I think when our fans get to see Sakho in action, they’ll see he’s definitely got all of those characteristics.”

Strong in the air and on the ground, with a superb distribution rate, Sakho seems the ideal fit for Rodgers’ possession-based tactics. The only downside is both he and Agger are predominantly left-footed, making them less of a natural partnership than Toure and the Dane – nevertheless, for £15m the Frenchman hasn’t come to warm the bench ahead of a World Cup year. There’s also perhaps the possibility of an occasional switch to a three-man backline – a tactic Rodgers trialled on one or two occasions last term, with a 3-4-3 system also tested during a few of his final matches in charge at Swansea.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 6.6 in the Sky Sports game and 3.5 in the Sun Dream Team, Sakho looks bound to earn plenty owners before the domestic program resumes. With Agger, Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique all priced at 6.0 in FPL, the Frenchman is set to hand us a cheap route into the Reds’ back-four (albeit one that is still more costly than Toure’s 5.0), though Johnson’s current ankle complaint is one to monitor, with Andre Wisdom or Martin Kelly (both 4.4 in FPL) set to benefit if the right-back is ruled out for any length of time. The new Bonus Points System ruling also seems tailor-made for the likes of Sakho’s style of play, with his presence at the back likely to Liverpool’s chances of surpassing the 16 clean sheets harvested in Rodgers’ first season at the helm.

Ahead of an eye-catching run of fixtures (swa, SOT, sun, CPL, new, WBA ) investment in a defence that has already kept Christian Benteke and Robin Van Persie at bay in back-to-back matches looks a wise move, with many even tempted to double up, such has been the Reds’ resilience. With Rodgers’ side devoid of European duties this term, the focus is fully on nailing down a top four finish – a lack of rest and rotation could also benefit Liverpool’s main Fantasy assets and will likely bring Sakho onto the radar for wildcard-wielding Fantasy managers over the current international break.

With plenty of chat about going with a 4-3-3 formation on here today, I'm going to throw my two cents on the table.

Main arguments for this is 1) the new bonus point system is more favourable towards defenders than it is to midfielders, and 2) so far the high priced midfielders have failed to impress.

Those opposed to the idea of going 4-3-3 seem to argue that this season has seen a much higher number of clean sheets compared to previous, and that this trend can't last forever.

My opinion on the matter is that while I agree the new bonus system heavily favours defenders, I do believe the high amount of clean sheets we have been seeing will soon come to an end. However, I do believe the big teams will continue to see a lot of clean sheets, and that it will be the West Hams and the Evertons who start seeing their clean sheets disappear.

I believe that going with 4 big defenders at the back is a great option to go forward with, as fixtures and the new team set-ups will see these teams be tighter than ever, in my opinion.

Arsenal: A great run of fixtures for the foreseeable future, and spirits will be high at the club
Chelsea: Always going to be tight under JM, can see a lot of 1-0 and 2-0 scorelines
Liverpool: Nice fixtures and a great start defensively to the season
Man Utd: Fantastic fixtures (excl. City), and with Fellaini sitting ahead of the defence I can't see many goals conceded
Spurs: Again, nice fixtures and with Paulinho/Chadli/dembele sitting ahead of the front 4, they will be better than any previous Spurs defence we have seen

Taking who I think is the best option from each (taking into account price, bonus potential and goal threat), you could set up your defence as

    Mignolet
    Mertesacker - Terry - Vidic - Walker

Very solid, and all for just 29.2m (37.2 when you add two 4m bench fodders). This still leaves plenty of money to spend on your mids and striker, and it doesn't mess up your team balance at all. For example, you could still finish your team as follows

    Walcott - Lampard - Michu - Brady - 4.5m
    Benteke - Sturridge - Giroud

This allows you an extremely strong starting 11, and you have Brady to step up if one of your players fails to make the game.

To finish up, I can't see too many problems with going with this tactic. If I decide to go without RVP, I'm almost certain I'll choose to play 4 at the back.

the prob is you are heavily reliant on CS one goal and your team loses 4 points and potential bos

if all your back 5 concede you will only have 10 points

      too risky imo

More than 2-3 big defenders looks risky, even under the new system.

I think maximising returns will still depend on rotating and making use of home fixtures. The top 6 are still going to concede in most away games.

No argument that the game has changed. Equally, its how to avoid good money being wasted when defenders are more reliant than ever on the CS for points.

I think if a decent £5m midfield option presents themselves (Brady? Barkley? Redmond?) then they an be interchanged with the 4th big defender, depending on fixtures.

Hey, that's my team too! I will be happy if my 4 premium defenders get 15+ clean sheets at 6-9 points a pop. That way your midfield doesn't get tainted with sporadic filler like Hernandez, Nolan & Ben Arfa and can focus on the proven goalscorers like Walcott, Michu & Lampard.

Clean sheet projections for the season by team based on 3 game weeks (by request)

Liverpool: 38 clean sheets, the impregnables

Newcastle, Chelsea, Everton, Tottenham, Man City & West Ham: 26 clean sheets

Southampton, Hull, Cardiff, Arsenal, Norwich, ManU, Stoke, Swansea, Fulham, West Brom: 13 clean sheets

Crystal Palace, Sunderland, Aston Villa: 0 clean sheets, captain your strikers against these

Total clean sheets for the season: 324

Get those defenders while they're still cheap because. Statistics don't lie !

The same insightful backward hindsight for midfielders and strikers was posted earlier: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/09/04/scout-scribbles-johnson-concern-for-liverpool/?hc_page=6#hc_comment_5479276

Its silly analysis. Not criticising Heelsoverhead. All that analysis can show now is current clean sheets x 12.66.

Minimum you could do to make this something sensible would be something like last 10 games of last season + first 3 games of this season - double weight this season's games if you want.

folks are making decisions based on a sample size of three games and extrapolating their impressions forward through another 35 games of statistical improbability

Probably been discussed countless times on here, but this is my two cents on the RVP debate.

Lets assume that your bench fodder (2mids, one def and one keeper) all cost 13m/12.9m.

    Bringing in RVP costs 14m.

Meaning the rest of your starting 10 players average 7.7m per player. So called big hitting midfielders are priced 9m-10.5m,which then brings the average per player down even more.

And with the new BPS system, we see that we need some solid defenders and not just cheap alternatives into a certain team keeping cleanies.

With all that being said, the fear that I will have every GW when without him,i don't think my heart can take it.

So to RVP or not to RVP...

Chelsea looks solid this season backwards and forward , but with awful rotation risk i am not considering any one but Cech Ivanovic Luiz , kind of a hard decision but i think its a must

At a complete loss if someone can help me.

    Here's my team:

    Mignolet (Boruc)
    Mertesacker, Coleman, Shaw (Whittaker, Collins)
    Walcott, Silva, Coutinho, Michu (Barkley)
    Giroud, Soldado, Dzeko

Looking at Negredo's performances as well as City's fixtures, I can't risk keeping Dzeko. I want to upgrade him to Sturridge. However, doing that means I need to downgrade someone else. I'm willing to remove either Silva or Michu but I don't know who to get instead.

One option would be to remove both Silva and Michu and replace them with something like Eriksen + Oscar. Not sold on this either though. I have 2 Transfers so this would hit me with a -4. Thoughts on what I could do would be great.
