The Community Round Up

Squad balance and the influence of the Fantasy Premier Leagues’s new Bonus Points System on our formations were amongst the key discussions taking place on the boards this week. We also look at some of our posters’ worst ever Gameweeks and catch up with the latest from our community’s leagues.

The Hottest Topics

The international break provides a useful time for Fantasy managers to take stock of their team. It’s a time to consider playing the market with a wildcard, saving transfers or waiting nervously for your players to return from their travels unscathed.

In our discussion on international break strategy, Newarse was among those looking to invest in Wayne Rooney ahead of Gameweek 4’s clash with Crystal Palace, while SAAB admitted he was “dying to” wildcard. Sadly Rooney’s head injury has since put paid to Newarse’s plans.

For those considering wildcarding over the break, though, Get In urges caution. Similarly, Triggerlips has also been looking at how much a wildcard is worth and wonders whether it could be best used later in the season when the double Gameweeks mount up.

Impressive Tackle’s post late last week on squad balance proved one of the most popular yet. He looks at the ideal spread of money across the team, which will come in handy for those currently on a wildcard.

Elsewhere, Southampton fan Bayern Badonde has been keeping a close eye on his team’s midfield in an attempt to help us better understand their mid-price options. With so many forward options on offer this will prove useful to those looking for an alternative to Rickie Lambert.

For many, especially those that captained Robin Van Persie or Edin Dzeko, Gameweek 3 was a horror show.  When we asked what has been your worst ever Gameweek, SW6 had last season’s Gameweek 2 tally of just 27 firmly etched in his memory. Similarly, Adam West will never forget selling Dimitar Berbatov just prior to the Bulgarian putting five goals past Blackburn for Man United.

Finally, the Bonus Point System continues to vex the community, especially the lack of points for assists. Blue Tiger was on hand to run the rule over the new system and show the dramatic changes it is making to our formations.

Community Leagues

In HeelsOverHead’s Worst To First – 2 Million+ Club league, open to those with an overall worse than two million in the first five gameweeks, Goyko Locos continues to lead the competitors epic race for a respectable rank. He is now 920,000th in the FPL game with no hits or wildcard. To join the other 18 teams in this league the code is 459213-545168.

Meanwhile, in Thomas and Peppie & Felix‘s Friends Life H2H Competition Thomass, Forca Inter and Daniel top each of their three groups.

Forca Inter is also one of the five league leaders in In Tommy We Trust‘s  competition. The other four are Smarty Pants, Tommy Tour, Mind Over Mata and Binji.

Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing competition saw 47 knocked out, with 934 left. The safety score was 34. In his Early Bird league 475 qualified and 256 were knocked out.

With a score of 207 Dr Ennet leads Fifa Las Vegas’s league, closely followed by Somebody’s Gonna Get Lit Up on 205 and Messimerized on 199.

In FFS UEFA’s leagues Shipsontrev was the top weekly scorer with 68 points. Lateriser12’s captaining of Olivier Giroud earned him this week’s Order of Extreme Valour award. Special mention goes to The Light Knight for his audacious decision to hand the armband to Hatem Ben Arfa. Tommy Tour is another doing well. He sits in first place in their La Liga on nine pts and is 529th in the world.

FFS Uefa have also announced details of their latest tournament, which is open to 737 community members and based around the FA Cup. More details can be found here and the registration form can be found here. Those already involved in the FFS UEFA leagues and those who applied unsuccessfully to be a part of that competition have all been given an automatic space so do not need to apply.

I swapped Aguero for Benteke before Arsenal bought Ozil. Villa's fixtures are still bad. I ought to have bought Giroud shouldn't i?

Giroud was knackered against spurs towards the end, I'm sticking to the hope Walcott gets all the points.

Villa's next two fixtures are fantastic! Newcastle at home & Norwich away. Tekker's armband in GW4 100%.

I think Giroud & Walcott will now be near essential with Ozil providing silver spoon service

Little update on the Belgian players

    Hazard:
He was back in training today but is still somewhat troubled with his achille heel, said it hurt a lot after the long game against Bayern and he's still recovering.

He hopes to play vs Scotland on Friday, but will only start if he's 100%. He did seem to consider playing with an injection to kill the pain but I doubt they'd risk him.

Belgium only play 1 game, so even if he doesn't get 100% fit by Friday, he should be ready for the trip to Goodison Park the 14th.

    Vertonghen and Chadli:
Both have a niggle and trained less intensive today. For Vertonghen it's his ankle, Chadli his groin.
Nothing serious for either of them but thought I'd mention it.

In a weird situation where my squad has enough of a good core that I don't want to waste a wildcard, but all the players that aren't worth spending a transfer to lose are trolling me.

I saved a transfer last week so have 2FT to play with and 0.3 in the bank.

    Problems flagged.

    Boruc* Marshall*
    Coleman Collins Murner Brayford** Toure***
    Walcott Silva Mirallas Coutinho Kim****
    Soldado Sturridge Benteke

    * Yes it's official, these keepers together have been so useless for me that I would have been miles better off if one had been a 4.0. No way of going Migs now without a WC surely.
    ** Die
*** Classic FPL. Toure was too much of a good thing. Toure must be stretchered off. And then two rivals for his position must be bought.
**** Let's look on the bright side... he got me a clean sheet point. That's pretty special. It means he had to stay on the pitch for 60 minutes.

That's one, maybe I could sell Coutinho instead who has lame goal threat and get Vidic for Brayford as you say. My saved budget can then go on turning Kim into gold.

By my mental maths that would give me 2.4 in the bank, enough to get anyone up to 7.4 for Kim (basically any decent midpriced midfielder I see in the next few weeks... maybe Barfa...)

If you had Giroud instead then it would be perfect.

I think Toure will play Vs Swans. I'd hold fire on him for a GW.
I liked Kim in that last match, I wouldn't rush to dump him.
Fire Brayford out (maybe a Vidic, Zab type pricey top 4 def) and downgrade Mirallas. That would be my advice but it's a nice team Isacki and it's great to have 2 FTs for the international break

pretty similar situation to me! we've got 12/15 players the same. foster shaw oscar vs marshall brayford coutinho

not sure why Kim is a worry, he's a 5th mid FFS!

imo the ones you should consider getting rid of: coutinho, mirallas, toure, marshall, brayford. of those I think brayford can wait, as can marshall unless you're getting mig. meaning you should focus on an exit strategy for 1-3 of coutinho, mirallas, and toure

Not really, considering almost everyone in the top ranks had RvP in their squad.. What would be essential is a good team and the right player choices around RvP to get you the points, especially when he under-performs. This season it's a different landscape. The points seem to be all with the picking of three 9m priced forwards to get the points, rather that putting it all as one lump sum into one player 😉

Not just one, but ALL the other options to choose instead of him have outscored him - Giroud, Sturridge, Benteke, Aguero, Soldado. It's the people that have RVP that need to justify it.

Soldado lone striker with Lamella, Eriksen, Lennon and Dembele supplying him

Was also thinking Benteke this week, it's the main thing keeping me off the RVP comfort blanket. Do think Newcastle defence is shaky, playing two teams with dodgy attacks does not a good defence make. Also expect Newcastle to attack so can see the Villa counterattack getting joy. Shame that Cabaye will play with the transfer window shut though, they looked like toast without him.

Ozil doesn't score goals, so Walcott would be a better option. With Ozil providing the ammo wally n giroud are likely to have several chances each every game. Ozil created over 4 goal scoring chances every 90 mins for real over his 3 seasons there. Why leave the 6.6 in the bank and have no RVP at home vs palace? seems crazy to me

similar situation to Isacki but a bit different. i've got two FT's as well and not sure how to best use them. happy with my strikers for now so not going to change them, will just have to risk not having rvp/rooney vs palace

    boruc foster***
    toure*** coleman collins shaw murner
    walcott silva* oscar mirallas** kim
    soldado sturridge benteke

*would be fine keeping but wouldn't mind selling either
** contender for the chopping block after blanking 3 straight weeks. unsure if I should give him another week or two (will Lukaku change things) or if I should get rid sooner rather than later
    *** bigger concerns

with foster my options are let him rot on my bench and play boruc every week or free up the cash to upgrade to mig

with toure I can either downgrade him in order to free up funds for mig and/or other transfers or I can try to find funds to upgrade him to sakho, vidic, terry/ivan, or zaba

how do you think I should go about this with my 2FTs? I'm fine taking a hit if it looks like a good move as well

I don't think Toure is a problem *yet. The noises coming out from Melwood is that he'll be ok for Swans, that surely gives you 1 GW breathing space with him (Sakho will come in to the first 11, but not just yet)
Just play Boruc this GW and use a FT next week to dump Foster.

Downgrade Mirallas to whomever takes your fancy in the 5->6m region.

I have loadsamoney stashed away for my Dzeko -> RVP move (-4) after the internationals.

There have been many, many, many discussions on RVP so I won't go over old ground. But how good does that transfer look.

Just watched MOTD, really enjoyed it actually.
    Few notes:
-Redmond looks a super option for his price. I've scoffed at midfield rotation all summer but one with Brady looks a good shout.
-Lallana looked very good in just what I saw. May have a patch of points at some point.
-Man City defended pretty poorly again, though Hull looked decent going forward. I've had Zab since the start but I'm thinking of letting him go to then get Kompany at some stage.
-HBA was absolutely top drawer, but I still can't see myself buying him anytime soon.

actually, the more I analyse it, the more 5 at the back appeals.

Apart from the obvious variables, clean sheets have been on the rise for a LOT of teams since the latter part of last season.

The key is flexibility. If I can find a way of shifting funds when the mids show their hand then I think I'll go with it.

One way I look at it is instead of punting and toying with the mids (boring and frustrating atm), I basically withdraw (aside from Walcott), admit defeat for the time being, regroup and then purchase the big hitters that eventually emerge.

              If that makes sense?

So many variables, but in short a mid above 5.5/6 has a LOT of convincing for me to invest.

Even when the touchpaper is lit, I need to see a sustained period of reliability of Bale and Mata proportions.

True that. I'm worried about the assist machines too with the new assist rules + bonus system.

Silva and Snoddy need to prove their worth soon else they'd have to make way for Michu and a cheap.

Interesting....The tricky bit is when premium mids come good tho. Having lost your WC, you want to keep your squad a bit flexible so you're able to move to good bandwagons.

^ If I see a mid I'm really convinced by (maybe a Lamps, Michu, Lamela) then I won't have any hesitation in getting them, even if takes a couple of FTs.

Would rather be a week late etc. yada yada and also I don't want to be sat on mids doing nothing but I'm too scared to transfer out.

Cheers Corrigan. But I don't understand your Zabs point, if you plan on getting Kompany, you think that when he's back, the ManCity defense will improve, but if that's the case won't Zabaleta benefit just as much? Or are you thinking Kompany's bonus point potential will outweigh Zab's attacking threat?

When Kompany returns I think he will transform them from ragged to solid. He's also nailed on.

Basically, it's just if I decide to lose Zaba now and he keeps rising then I have a buy back clause alternative.

Had Redmond since the day FPL opened and not seen a single person back me until this weekend when he backed my faith, so pretty happy to say I called that one.

Not sure Lallana has enough point scoring potential as much as I think he's a top player.

City look like having a similar season to last year atm with no consistent or predictable pick up front, not a predictable set of clean sheets.

HBA performs one in 5 games for me and will never be in my team.

Is it worth a -4 point hit to save .1m?

Case in point is James Morrison. Anyway, I have to ship him out later as it seems. Price rises are pretty hard to find this year. Hence, considering a move befor his price drop but that would cost a -4.

    Thanks

If you're targeting 2000+ points from 100m budget that places each 0.1m at about 2 points, so according to that, no. Maybe if the guy you were bringing in was going to rise too. Above all, this is all ultimately done to maximize points so should consider the points implication of your actual move - what is iy?

        Hmm..

Hopefully Morrison would not fall tonight. I have one day to think over. I am thinking to bring in Kacaniklic, whose price would not increase now, but later when he starts scoring.
