Scout Report – Adrian Mariappa

Ian Holloway’s substantial summer shopping spree saw the Crystal Palace boss swing by the Madejski on deadline-day to snap up Adrian Mariappa. The centre-half arrives from Reading for a fee believed to be in the region of £2.5m and is one of 16 new faces to roll up to Selhurst Park since the end of last season.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the 26-year-old admitted he was relieved to be back in the top-flight after dropping into the Championship with the relegated Royals last time around:

“I’m delighted to be joining Palace and playing in the Premier League again. It’s something everyone dreams of doing. Playing there last season was a great challenge as it is the biggest league in the world and you’re playing against the best players, so when this opportunity came to me I jumped at it. Selhurst Park is always a great place to play, the atmosphere has always been amazing and I’ve had some great games against this club. I want to prove I can play at this level an I’m sure that will be the same for everyone in the squad as we aim to stay in the Premier League.”

The History

A product of the Watford youth system, Mariappa made his debut for the Hornets towards the end of the 2005/06 campaign. The defender took some time to establish himself in the first-team, though, making 44 appearances (with 14 off the bench) across the following couple of seasons before finally nailing down a regular role in 2008/09.

Over the next four league campaigns, Mariappa turned out 169 times for the Vicarage Road club, producing four goals and three assists, before Reading snapped him up in the summer of 2012. He then featured on 29 occasions for the Royals last time out but fell out of favour under Nigel Adkins and has yet to see any league action this term. On the international stage, Mariappa has represented Jamaica 12 times since making his debut last year.

The Prospects

At present, it’s uncertain just where Mariappa stands in the Palace pecking order. Holloway has started Danny Gabbidon and Damien Delaney at centre-half in all three league fixtures thus far but the new boy’s mobility at the back could well see him get the edge over the less agile Gabbidon, with Mariappa’s speed ensuring the Eagles are perhaps a little less susceptible to balls played over the top.

Given that Holloway’s side have yet to earn a clean sheet, their defensive appeal is mainly down to price. Coming in at a mere 4.0 in Fantasy Premier league (FPL), Mariappa could be on the radar of those Fantasy managers on the lookout for a bargain but with three of their current back-four – Gabbidon, Joel Ward and Dean Moxey – all similarly priced, his acquisition looks a little too risky until Holloway’s plans are a little more concrete.

With Hull’s 4.0 priced centre-half James Chester looking nailed-on, twinning the Tigers centre-half with a Palace defender would give you a run of home fixtures that includes (CAR, SWA, WHM, AVL, FUL, SUN, EVE, CPL) in eight of the next nine Gameweeks. An enticing schedule, no doubt, but given that Gabbidon grabbed a goal in the Gameweek 3 win over Sunderland, Mariappa may have to wait his turn just yet. Nevertheless, the new boy’s arrival will cause a little concern to the Welshman’s 30,000+ new owners and, with Moxey’s game time soon to be under threat as Jonathan Parr gradually regains his fitness at left-back, it may well leave right-back Ward as the most secure option for those bold enough to take a punt on Holloway’s backline.

Ward’s game time looks more nailed-on than ever following the news that summer signing Jack Hunt has already been ruled out due to a broken ankle less than a fortnight after joining the club.

Seeing quite a few WC teams with Ozil, Lamela, Eriksen, Sakho etc

Very few with Lukaku, Sess, Fellaini etc

Are people just getting excited over new signings we havent been able to own before over the novelty?

Do new signings who've previously been good FPL options appeal less for any proper reasons?

Sometimes I think its based on the players ability in FIFA.

Heh... probably may be FIFA for some but look at the fixtures Arse, Totty & Liv have. It's now or never (you know what I mean). That said, I have one new signing in my team as that's quite enough for the time being.

Lukaku will be in gwk 6 if he starts 5 for me.

Sess just needs to prove himself after a dip in form.

Felli could be a nice option but a little pricey for what he brings.

I agree that all those new signings r risky. Key is to wait

You are more likely to get underpriced players with "new" players because FPL don't have previous FPL points history to go on. So, if you can spot the bargains you can do well, like Lamela and Sakho IMO.

Lukaku = not playing this week + people are still nursing their wounds from GW1

Here's something to think about for Fell...Last season Man United had the lowest number of corners of all the top seven sides by quite a distance...but scored the most goals from corners by quite a distance...That may well be a testament to the quality of the ball into the box (RVP/Rooney)...and my guess is it will be Fell waiting at the other end of those corners into the box this season...

A large percentage of sides have RVP, so how on earth can you establish who these template players are. The fact is you can't, a word which is totally mis used on here.

          Yes they do.

A lot of teams also have a lot of the players this fine chap has.

I agree the term "template" is inaccurate in a literal sense. But words evolve and gain new meaning all the time particularly on the internet. I'm just going with the flow and using the word how everyone else here seems to use it. Where it means "popular choice" rather than "exact copy".

    Evening gents,

WC strategy question. I am not sure if I even want Hernandez, but even so I should get him in now for Walcott, not to miss out on the price rise, right? Walcott isn't going anywhere until Sat morning, is he?

    Thanks

    g

You will only get one rise anyway so no point unless you might want to keep him.

Hmm.. True. I could get him in for Walcott, then ditch Walc for Silva and bank the .2 profit I've made of him.

        Too much tinkering.

I currently own. Considering wildcard though. He has the home fixtures coming up and I think he's nailed on but just so many good striking options he feels a waste. Only considering keeping as I want United cover

    2FTs

    Mirallas -> Whittingham (bench fodder)
    Celustka -> Sagna/Evra/Clyne/Chester

What do you think of these moves in isolation?
And which out of those 4 defenders would you pick for the long term (considering value)?

Just found the article from the times confirming the Johnson news

    http://pbs.twimg.com/media/BT6LfD9CYAA5eOe.png

"Liverpool atleast have some cause for relief after suggestions that Johnson's injury may have been serious to keep him out for up to ten weeks.

Says Wisdom WILL deputise at RB after shelving plans to send him on loan to Wigan

Also on Sturridge...it says he IS expected to recover and has been aided by the fixture being put back to Monday for television purposes

Thoughts on my WC team please. I haven't made a change for a full 10 hours so hopefully that means im getting somewhere

      Mignolet - Boruc

      Coleman - Koscielny - Evra - Debuchy - Chester

Walcott - Michu - Ben Arfa - Brady - Redmond

      Benteke - Giroud - Soldado

Great front 3. Would like it even more w/out Redmond and HBA.
        Evra-no one cheaper?
        Borat-when would you play him?

          Redmond to rotate with Brady.

Evra is the only nailed-on United defender, might get some assists with their fixtures.

Going to play Boruc this week. Think they're more likely to keep a CS at home to West Ham than Liverpool are away to Swansea. Plus I have Michu - don't want to have the conflict of backing him to score but also backing Mignolet to keep a clean sheet 🙂

Did have McGregor who rotates better but he has a pesky injury. Probably bring him back in when I get the chance.

I like it for the most part.

I think the 5.0 on Debuchy could be invested better elsewhere, regardless of if you intend to go 4-3-3 or not.

On the whole though a very nice team, imo.
