Moving Target

Moving Target – Peter Odemwingie

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay made his eighth of the summer transfer window by acquiring Peter Odemwingie from West Brom on a three-year contract. The 32-year-old arrives for a reported fee of £2.5m, with the Welsh club beating Stoke and Swansea to his signature in a frantic transfer deadline-day scramble:

Speaking to the press after completing the deal, the Bluebirds boss admitted Odemwingie’s time in the top-flight with the Baggies was a key factor in his decision to splash the cash:

“I’m delighted to sign a player with a proven record of scoring in the Premier League. Peter’s record speaks for itself. He’s versatile, got great pace and does bring us that bit of experience we need. He’s an outstanding footballer at Premier League level, an intelligent footballer with a bit of guile. I spent a lot of time with him and he’s an intelligent and thoughtful person too. He’s going to prove an asset for Cardiff City of that I’ve no doubt.”

The History

Born in the Soviet Union, Odemwingie came through the youth system at CSKA Moscow before kicking off his career in Nigeria with Bendel Insurance. After notching 19 times in 53 appearances between 2000 and 2002, he was picked up by Belgian club La Louviere in the summer of 2002. Odemwingie’s time in the Jupiler Pro League lasted a couple of years – with nine goals accrued over 44 appearances he was snapped up by French club Lille prior to the end of the summer transfer window in 2004/05.

Having racked up 23 goals and 11 assists from 75 Ligue 1 appearances, the Nigerian was on his travels yet again, with Lokomotiv Moscow shelling out $14m for his services in July 2007. His time in Russia produced near-identical statistics, with 21 goals and 11 assists from 74 league matches before Odemwingie rolled up to the Hawthorns in August 2010.

The 32-yeard-old immediately took the Premier League by storm and, handing Fantasy managers a real cut-price contender for their three-man frontlines, produced 15 goals and nine assists in 32 games over his debut season. Odemwingie’s second year was far less successful, with 10 goals and three assists accrued from 30 appearances, while his final term at the midlands outfit proved something of a disappointment – a move to QPR was denied in the most public of fashions last January and, handed a peripheral role under Steve Clarke, he managed just five goals and three assists from 25 matches, with 12 of those games coming courtesy of the bench. On the international stage, Odemwingie has turned out for his country on 55 occasions and found the net nine times.

The Prospects

Mackay’s praise would certainly suggest the former Baggie hasn’t just been purchased to warm the Bluebirds’ bench all season. Although the Cardiff boss hailed the Nigerian’s versatility, it seems he is likely to earn most of his game time on the flank – Mackay somewhat tellingly admitted in an interview earlier this week that winger Craig Conway was omitted from the club’s 25-man squad as a result of Odemwingie’s arrival.

At present, Craig Bellamy and Peter Whittingham still look in the driving seat for the flank roles but, given that the former picked up a few injuries last term and the latter suffered from a lack of form and failed to find the net after October, Mackay has clearly drafted in Odemwingie as a viable alternative for the wing roles, with plenty of Premier League experience under his belt. Strength is depth is crucial for the Cardiff boss but the new boy’s arrival could cut into both Bellamy and Whittingham’s game time, with the likes of Craig Noone shifting further down the pecking order.

Coming in at 5.7 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 6.8 in the Sky Sports game and 2.0 in the Sun Dream Team, Odemwingie’s classification as a forward across the Fantasy games looks problematic, though his adaptability could see him utilised through the middle late on in games if Mackay’s switches to a two-man frontline when chasing a result. Certainly, with Fraizer Campbell and Andreas Cornelius currently number one and two for the lone forward role, it would take a spate of injuries to promote him to a central position and bring him into our Fantasy thinking. For now, it’s a case of “wait and see” but as the season unfolds, there would be no surprise to see Mackay increasingly turn to the Nigerian’s experience and proven Premier League record as he looks to rack up the points to secure his side’s safety.

So my current draft has both Chester and Wisdom in. Faye back threatens Chester apparently, and Johnson's injury "not as serious as expected"..... how serious do we rate these threats? Worth looking elsewhere in either case?

I think I'd look elsewhere for both... no point having a player if he doesn't play. You're not gonna be changing your cheap defenders every week, I'd rather have someone who plays. Shaw, MTurner or Collins instead of Wisdom for instance. Ward, or BTurner maybe, instead of Chester.

    Big Defences: Fashion or Fad?

Just put this as a reply to a goals conceded but by the time i'd finished researching the data, i was a few pages behind the conversation.

Some of you might find solace in these numbers...

Judging this season on three gameweeks seems a little bit brave. If we zoom out on the premier league and look at the trends, the 4 or 5 man defence that many of us may have started considering might not be such a sure fire way to go.

Data from the past 3 years suggest that the last two gameweeks have been somewhat of an anomaly.

The LOWEST average goals per gameweek (of the opening three GWs since 2010/11) was 2.0 (GW1, 2011/12).

GW1 THIS SEASON harvested an average of 2.55 goals, HIGHER than the average of the previous 3 seasons ((2.6+ 2.0 + 2.7)/3 = 2.43).

GW2 averaged a measly 1.7 and GW3 an even 'measlier' 1.44 goals per game! - numbers so off trend that the lowest average goals per game in the opening 10 gameweeks of the past 3 seasons was in fact higher than GW2 and GW3 (considerably)(the 1.8 gpg scored in GW10, 12/13).

Lets zoom the microscope out a little farther...

    In 21 seasons;
    - the lowest average goals per game is 2.45 (2006/7)
    - The highest is 2.81 (2011/12)
    - Average, or 21 years of data: 2.61!

And for the last 5 years, it goes like this:
    08/09 - 2.48
09/10 - 2.77 (4th highest scoring year in PL history)
    10/11 - 2.80 (joint 2nd highest)
    11/12 - 2.81 (record)
    12/13 - 2.80 (joint 2nd highest)

I'd argue that while we may well see a decline in the average number of goals per game on last year or the year before, due to the defensive improvements of lower teams in relation to stronger teams perhaps, the average goals per game is unlikely to vary much from a VERY long standing trend.

I think these numbers make the argument for 'keep calm and stick to your original plan' a very strong one.

Well defenders are nailed on to get more pts as they will receive baps on most Clean sheet occasions even when their team has scored. That means big defenders have a bout 15 games per season when they will be on for baps. That is a big boost IMO. But clearly some people are going over the top with 4-5 big hitters. I like to go with 2-3 big hitters and strong rotation players like Collins on the bench

I also have 2 cheap mids cause of RVP so a strong defense will help me go for 4 at the back for some weeks when those 2 have bad games

not sure about nailed on, but yes i agree they are more likely.

What happens when the goals come a bit more consistently though - we are yet to see a mid with goals in his locker, something almost inevitable through the season?

Would you expect a goal scoring mid to take a good share of those BPs?

I don't think anyone with half a brain expects the clean sheets to continue at the same rate. But that's not the whole story. What's new this season is that to the right player, a clean sheet is now worth more: 5-7 points instead of 4. Of course, in the high scoring games a CS may still be worth 4. But it's over the season that's still a big uptick in returns.

It's very likely that the top teams will, as usual, keep 15-20 clean sheets over the season. At an average of 6 points each, that's a substantial rate of scoring for a 6m player, and a lot more than you can expect from a similarly priced midfielder.

Their own positions. The 4-5m defenders will also see this increase in points (albeit to a lesser extent), however rotating is always aimed to maximise the CSs anyway, so this would also take into consideration the baps. The gap between say 6m defenders and 4-5m defenders is less than that of a 1-2m difference in midfield or strikers on average. Basically a 7m mid + 4.5m defender usually scores more than a 7m defender and a 4.5m mid (better examples would be more useful, but cbf 😛 )

That may be right, although I do remember someone like 3rdturd showing that 1m spent in defence was more lucrative than 1m spent in midfield. That probably needs to be qualified in some way which might negate it.

good post, the last GW's 1.44 is only a half of the long-term average goals per GW, looks like a statistical outlier

Great post though, still the defensive power 5 is a tempting one.

        Thanks Spartakmac.

There have been plenty of speculative posts so i thought I weigh in with some numbers. It's more for my own amusement but I know there a few other stattoos out there so i always share.

And yes, Defensive Power 5's are an interesting prospect, especially when you consider that, in Coleman and Baines especially, some are pretty much good midfielders on a budget (with the benefit of mega returns on clean sheets and goals vs an actual mid) anyway.

Here's one for the non-RVP owners to ponder.......does/would owning a United defender help to dilute some of your angst ? Point being that not many RVP owners will have any/many 6.0 defs.
Ok - it's a state of mind thing but De Gea almost certainly would NOT be my goalie if I had RVP (know most have Migs but I've got my 'pool cover via Enrique) so the way I look at it, RVP has to score 2+ in the easier fixtures for me to be 'out of pocket' and that's a risk worth taking.
Cue loads saying, but what about the 2-1s, 3-2s, etc.......but as I say; it's just a state of mind thing and will act as my RVPless comfort blanket.
