Champions League Picks – Matchday 2

The next round of matches in this season’s Champions League gets underway this evening. Fantasy managers taking part in the official UEFA Fantasy Champions League game need to be aware of an early deadline this evening – Zenit’s home clash against Austria Vienna means our squads must be submitted by 16.45 GMT. With Lionel Messi missing out through injury, there’s plenty to ponder, then; we bring Granville on board as our Champions League tipster for the season ahead:

Tuesday

Hulk – already off the mark with a thunderbolt in the group opener against Atletico Madrid, the Brazilian heads into this evening’s encounter in strong form. Set-piece taker Hulk has netted in each of his last four appearances for the Russians and, with six goals in his previous seven, looks a real contender for our three-man frontlines at just 9.0. Alternatively, team-mate Oleg Shatov is another to consider. Zenit are flying right now, having racked up six straight victories in all competitions and the midfielder has been key to their impressive displays, chipping in with three strikes in his last couple of appearances – at 5.0, he’s a strong budget option against the struggling Austrian outfit.

Pedro – Messi’s absence this Matchday is as much of a blow for Fantasy managers as it is for Barcelona. Currently residing in 60% of teams, the most popular player in the game is burning a 13.0 shaped hole in our budgets ahead of the Spanish side’s trip to Celtic this evening. Granted, as Barca found out last term, Parkhead is something of a fortress on European nights – the visitors (who are also without Javier Mascherano and Jordi Alba) will be looking for the 9.0 priced forward to maintain the form that has harvested five goals in his last six appearances before facing back-to-back Group H games against Milan.

Jackson Martinez – make no mistake, the Portuguese league leaders have a tough home tie on their hands as Atletico Madrid pay visit later tonight. Diego Simeone’s side have now won all seven La Liga matches but Martinez’ eye for goal could help swing the match the hosts’ way – with five strikes in his previous six, he’s an in-form option at 8.0 up top. If you’re on the hunt for a cut-price midfielder, Josue may fit the bill – coming in at a mere 4.5, he’s at the front of the queue for spot-kicks and has already converted three this season.

Valentin Stocker – the 6.0 priced midfielder is a key man for Basel as they look for a repeat of the Matchday 1 victory at Stamford Bridge. Up next for the Swiss side is a home game against Schalke and with the injury-hit visitors shipping 16 goals in their last seven matches, it’s fair to say their defence has been unconvincing. Stocker has now struck three times in the last seven, with this stunner against Sion at the weekend. His midfield team-mate Mohamed Salah is another option – similarly priced, he found the net in Matchday 1 away to Chelsea.

Wednesday

Ahmed Musa – the 5.5 priced CSKA forward has been filling in for the injured Seydou Doumbia in recent matches and has now notched five times in 11 appearances. Admittedly, the Russian outfit have been in poor form of late but with visitors Plzen offering little threat going forward, a home win in Wednesday’s early kick-off (deadline is 16.45 GMT again) looks on the cards. For those looking to load up on the hosts, Vasili Berezutski, at a mere 4.0, is a tempting shout in defence.

Sidney Sam – in spite of their Matchday 1 defeat at Old Trafford, Leverkusen have made a strong start to the season, winning six of their first seven Bundesliga fixtures. The 5.0 priced midfielder has racked up five goals in seven appearances so far this term and, playing host to a Real Sociedad side without a win since the opening game of the campaign, looks an eye-catching acquisition.

Edison Cavani – a home game against Benfica brings PSG’s summer signing onto the radar. Coming in at 10.5, the former Napoli man is kinder on the budget than team-mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic (12.5) and has now notched five games in eight appearances for the French outfit. He could also be on spot-kicks, too – Ibrahimovic missed his last penalty, while Cavani converted from the spot at the weekend, albeit with the Swede off the pitch. At the back, centre-half Marquinos comes in at 5.5 and has grabbed two goals in four appearances this term.

Massimo Bruno – the Anderlecht midfielder looks an outstanding value squad filler as he prepares for a home showdown against an Olympiacos side who are notoriously bad travellers. Priced at a mere 4.0, Bruno has already registered five goals in nine matches this season and could well be set to plunder the points tomorrow evening.

Arturo Vidal – despite firing 13 shots at goal against FC Copenhagen, Juventus could only manage a draw last time out. A home game against Galatasaray affords the Italian side the chance to get back to winning ways and Vidal’s contribution is likely to be here – the 8.5 priced midfielder has already notched three times in six appearances and is on spot-kicks for the “Old Lady”. Former United man Paul Pogba is a budget alternative at 5.5 and looks a secure starter in the hosts’ five-man midfield.

        Keep him! If you do....you will not realize the loss in price.

        His fixtures are great (which is the reason why you got him in the first place). Stay the course, you could easily make the 0.1 back before it is time to sell him!

    Who is the Brady replacement for £5.5m/£6.0m or less?

    I dont think there is a safe one, maybe Townsend, Morrison? Taarabt as a very very VERY reachy gamble? In fact it feels dirty just suggesting the latter. If you have the likes of Barkley, Amalfitano, Whittingham already, then what does this actually leave you to do? It would probably be wise holding onto Brady if at all possible, after all, there is an International break in between. BUT the difficult thing though of course is if you own Chester or another injured player on top of Brady. Then you have a bigger problem. The only way out of this situation IMO, is a downgrade of another, one that you hope doesnt backfire and then an upgrade to Brady. This will probably mean Ramsey being drafted in by many, in fact what the heck! Forget probably! It WILL mean that! And it will mean him rising yet again and becoming the most owned player in the game in the process.

    Meaning if you have him, you are somewhat at least covered, if not, you hope he doesnt continue the streak, but hope is all you have......If he does well and you dont have him......

    You are Ramsey'd!!!

        Brilliant player to watch. But for me, like many in the game, not a fantasy prospect. Runs all game, never stops, chips in occasionally. But to get anywhere in this game, you need explosiveness and big returns. If this game was based on how good players play, we'd all have teams of Dembele and co. Unfortunately its based on points. In fact this year. So far its been based on the £5.5m midfielder or less, box to box midfielders, Goals and CS's.

    After watching Liverpool's last 2 performances with the 3-5-2 formation, (or however you want to package it), and seeing them transition to it with relative ease, I came to the conclusion that it could be great for United and solve some of the main dilemmas Moyes currently faces with regards fitting certain players into a team and system:

    DDG
    Smalling - Vidic - Evans
    Rafael - Carrick - Fellaini - Evra
    Kagawa
    Rooney - RVP

    Moyes will never do this, but it would get Kagawa in his best role, free up our full backs (who are actually more effective than our actual wingers at attacking), and it would suit Carrick and Fellaini to sit and play the style they are best at.

    Go on Moyes, I dare you.

      I wouldn't mind actually seeing that and I'm a United fan. With the way Young and Valencia playing, it wouldn't be suprising to atleast try? Gives Januzaj his preferred role to sub with Kags and Nani can play anywhere in the attacking as he has played up top for United before.

        Exactly, and Valencia could easily deputise for Rafael anyway in the right sided wingback role.

        The only player who gets totally shafted by this formation change would be Ashley Young, which is no big loss.

      On paper it's a good way of using United's abundance of center backs. In practice I seriously doubt their ability to play three at the back. It's quite different from playing two at the back, requires great positional sense and some pace doesn't hurt either. The only teams that pull it off are those with positionally intelligent beast CBs like Juventus... and no one else that really comes to mind.

          Of course there are pros and cons, just saying it would be worth a try.

          It will never happen though, Moyes religiously stuck to 4-4-1-1 at Everton and seems to be doing the same at United...zzzzzzzz.

            Oh yeah it's worth changing something, it's like watching a 90s team right now.

            I agree, I'm astounded that he's got to this level of management basically playing a boxy 4-4-2. Poor Kags keeps getting stuck on the left because he can't deal with the idea of third creative midfielder.

          Wigan's and Villa's was more to do with poor personnel tbf. Also a lack of sticking to it for long enough for it to be worthwhile and for the defenders to become accustomed to the formation.

            Yeah, no excuse for personnel with City and Pool though. There's no guarantee it would have worked out either in the end and the time taken to adapt counts against it as a strategy, seems really to me if you want to play it you have to buy the right players or coach them really hard.

            Remember Micah Richards complaining after a 3-5-2 failure that they didn't know how to play it: http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2914/champions-league/2012/10/24/3475800/manchester-city-defender-richards-blasts-mancinis-3-5-2

            Mancini fired back that any good CB should know how to play it. Unfortunately, I think that might only be true where he comes from, in Italy.

    Migs/Given
    Zabaleta, Coleman, Shaw
    Ozil, Eriksen, Brady, Ben arfa
    Rooney, Suarez, Giroud
    (Collins, Ward, Parker)

    1 FT & 1.2m in bank

    How about these transfers for a hit
    A) Collins -> Walker/Terry & Ben arfa -> Ramsey (and play with 4-3-3)
    B) Collins -> Burner & Ben arfa -> Michu
    C) Brady -> Ramsey (play with 3-4-3)
    D) Collins -> Dawson (play with 4-3-3)

    any suggestions ?

    Did say yesterday that the 12,000 transferring Brady in for one match wasn't sensible (although they might not have known about his hernia). Now they're paying an even bigger price. I feel mildly sorry for existing owners, but not so much for new owners.

    Lots of injuries this season and not just my players.

    UCL guys, don't forget it's one of those stupidly early deadlines this evening to accommodate the Russian League. 16.45 GMT

      Its Ramsey or get Ramsey'd.

      Most owned player by the end of the week IMO.

      Brady being out sooner rather than later has just thrown another dreaded cat amongst the pigeons and pushed more people into visiting Ramsey Street with no dead end or return.

      Thanks Robbie.

    If Nani gets nailed on, would you buy him at 7.4? That's a steal. Having a triple up of him, Rooney and Valencia did me very well 2 seasons ago.

        Cardiff are quite solid at home, but Newcastle are in scoring form...

        Barkley could be involved in an Everton goal, but it's hard to bet against a Citeh CS at home...

      It's been poor since last season though. They had a brief respite getting some CS early this season but they were against bad attacks if I remember correctly. A bit like Stoke who may have been flattered by getting CS against West Ham and City's B-team at the Britannia.

    Afternoon all...

    I'm currently sat at 267k globally and have (accrued whilst retaining my wildcard and just 1 hit) a bank ballance of 5.7 million...

    Looking to invest to strengthen (especially backline) and hopefully keep the green arrows coming. Would the international break be a good time to WC or should I stick to the slowly but surely approach?

    I have no FT's. Was thinking Collins to Davies for a hit...good move? I could just field Burner this week...

    Where would you spread this 5.7?

    Boruc (+4)
    Toure, Coleman, Collins (Burner, Ward)
    Ozil, Michu, Ramsey, Barkley (Ravel)
    Suarez, Sturridge (yep 2 pool attack :/ ) Giroud

    Would be interested to have some objective advice!

    Cheers!
