Champions League Picks – Matchday 3

There’s just a few hours left until the next round of Champions League matches gets underway, with this evening’s deadline at 19.30 GMT. For those playing the official UEFA Fantasy Champions League, we bring you a total of 10 players worth considering for Matchday 3, with five potential picks for each of the two evening’s fixtures:

Tuesday

Carlos Puyol – a trip to the San Siro is never the easiest but a number of injuries for the hosts should bolster Barcelona’s chances of clean sheet returns. Milan have scored just one goal in each of their last three home games in all competitions, whilst the Spanish side have conceded only two goals in their last six – coming in at 6.5, Puyol has just returned from months out through injury and has an ownership under 1% ahead of this evening’s match.

Federico Piovaccari – Steaua will be looking for their first points of this season’s tournament after suffering back-to-back losses against Schalke and Chelsea. With five goals in his last seven matches, Piovaccari, priced at just 5.5, looks the one to watch as the Romanian side prepare for the visit of Basel.

Leon Goretzka – despite the loss of injured duo Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Jefferson Farfan, Schalke seem full of goals right now and have found the net three times in four of their last five fixtures. Goretka is a real punt for this evening’s match with Chelsea – the 5.0 priced midfielder climbed off the bench to replace the injured Marco Höger at the weekend and notched in the Braunschweig; if he gets the nod to start, he could be worth a shout.

Oscar – on the other hand, Schalke’s lack of resilience bodes well for Chelsea’s chances of grabbing a goal or two. Jose Mourinho will be plotting to take advantage of a defence that has shipped 19 goals in their first nine Bundesliga fixtures – the Blues’ in-form Brazilian (priced at 7.5) gets the nod, having now scored in each of his last four for club and country.

Diego Costa – having served a two-match European ban, Costa is welcomed back for Atletico Madrid for this evening’s trip to Austria Vienna. Top scorer in La Liga this season, with 10 goals in nine appearances, he looks strong value at just 9.0 as Diego Simeone’s side go in search of their third successive victory.

Wednesday

Jan Kirchhoff – absences at the back for Bayern bring the 4.5 priced centre-back into the reckoning. With Dante injured and Jerome Boateng suspended, Kirchhoff looks set to be installed at the heart of Pep Guardiola’s defence ahead of a home clash with Viktoria Plzen.

Seydou Doumbia – CSKA have struggled to find the net in recent matches but with visitiors Man City still missing influential skipper Vincent Kompany, the Russians will be confident of breaching the visitors’ backline. Having recently returned from injury, Doumbia – at just 6.0 – welcomes Manuel Pellegrini’s side in impressive form, with four goals in his last six appearances.

Wesley Sneijder – Roberto Mancini’s arrival at Galatasaray seems to have brought out the best in the Dutchman. After a somewhat disappointing season, Sneijder looks to have rediscovered his eye for goal and bagged a brace in the weekend home win over Karabükspor – priced at 8.5, he’s set to host FC Copenhagen tomorrow evening.

Marquinhos – we’re keeping faith in the PSG centre-half after he grabbed a goal and clean sheet in the previous Matchday’s win over Benfica. The top scoring defender in this year’s tournament so far, 5.5 priced Marquinos could be set for further returns as the French side make their way to Anderlecht.

Stefan Kießling – having recommended team-mate Sidney Sam ( 5.0 priced midfielder) in our previous article, we’re opting for last season’s top scorer in the Bundesliga as Leverkusen play host to Shakhtar. Kießling has racked up six goals and three assists in nine league appearances this term (including last week’s infamous ghost goal against Hoffenheim) and spearheads an attack that has notched twice in each of the opening two Matchdays. At 9.0, he’ll be looking to bring his domestic form to tomorrow’s match, having yet to find the net in this term’s tournament.

Perhaps it reflects more on Fergies ability to teach. Average teachers can educate smart students, quality teachers can educate average ones.

I remember a comment he made about Tevez in a Press Conference when asked about the Argentinian's popularity among the fans when he wasn't able to get a regular spot in the team.

He said: "well everyone loves a trier, don't they?"

Which basically infers that Tevez is lacking in talent.

One cannot argue with his record, nor his ability to get the best out of a squad that, at times, was far less capable on paper than that of his main rivals.

His comments about players are part of who he is. Take away any such characteristics, and you end up with a less effective manager and fewer trophies.

I am reminded by a puerile comment the Irish Boxing legend Barry McGuigan made years ago. "It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice"

        The f**k it is, Barry!!

1979 European Cup win for Forest, this was their "run":

              Liverpool
              AEK Athens
              Grasshopper Zurich
              Koln

I'm not belittling Clough's achievements mate - like I've said, he was a genius.

Just my opinion that the European Cup was easier to win in the 1970s, than in the modern day.

Hmm. In the old days it was a knock-out competition over 2 legs; and I am not sure it was seeded either.

                    Debatable I think.

Totally different era, cannot be compared IMO as the circumstances surrounding each achievement are at opposite ends of the spectrum.

Much easier to win the European Cup back then.

Both are geniuses in their own way.

So when does an era begin and end? To say it was much easier to win a European Cup back then is a crazy statement. Look at the team sheets of many of the teams involved back then, whenever that was.

It was definitely easier back then. Take a look at my post above for Forest's run to the trophy in 1979.

The 2nd, 3rd and 4th best teams in England, Italy, Spain and Germany are, and always have been better than the 1st best teams in lesser established football countries - however, back then they were not in the competition as only 1 team from each country was entered.

Hence the standard was lower, much lower. Nowadays, the best 20 teams in Europe are in the competition, back then they were not.

Of course it was. Didn't have to play anything like the same number of games and the strength overall was inferior because you only have the champions of each country,. Basically teams like Real Madrid and Dortmund wouldn't be in the competition if that were now.

Possibly. I think the main reason he was benched at the weekend was that the game was sandwiched between two international games and tonight's CL game.

To be fair, his form is as hard for Wenger to ignore as it is for us. But as more and more players come back from injury, it gets more and more risky. I guess the art to Ramsey this year will be knowing when to jump off the wagon.

Everything went through him last season but 4 goals and not even an assist.
I haven't seen the highlights, was he unlucky or is he not as influential as last season?

It's frustrating that's for sure but his stats are fine. He's 2nd top midfielder for shots in the box over the last four weeks.

Having said that, I might swap horses to Oscar/Hazard if he doesn't do anything soon.

It was especially frustrating having him as captain last week! His stats still look good, better than Lallana who is over performing. I think I'm just worried about not having Ozil next week and losing even more ground.

          That must have been maddening.

That is the thing about Michu this year. I occasionally forget that he's not 6.5 this year, he's 9.0 and he needs to perform like a big hitter.

Not having Özil was a mistake I decided I had to correct at any cost. I did it for a -8 😯 That won't be paid off this week but it will over the next few weeks.

There is a lot of talk about differentials and templates on this site. A recent list below my questions & comments.

      My questions & comments are:

      - we're in GW9, and it seems like differentials are more important to think about as such in the last quarter of the season as you try to pass others at the top of your mini-league, etc. than in GW9 when you're just trying to be in a position that the last quarter of the season will still matter, and find you in the thick of things

      - one should be thinking less about ownership and more about what is best for our teams right now; if the best team is a bunch of players who are all owned by more than 20% of people, why should I care? and how many people really own all of them?

      - I read some of these posts where people are trying to be different, and it seems like they're thinking about differentials in terms of past FPL seasons and have not adapted their thinking for how this season is going with particular attention to how the bonus system rewards points (despite a recent series of articles about those bonus points too)

      - I believe over the course of the season, the way most players "chase points" on a weekly basis that simply being calm, avoiding taking hits as much as possible, and holding players that are good but haven't scored for one or two weeks, will develop into a differential team on it's own

      - I believe attention to runs of fixtures and form has its place, but some folks look at runs of fixtures that are too near-term and put them in a position of making more transfers, rather than less, and putting yourself in position to limit your transfers - long-term - is also part of being different, and a more important difference than worrying about if a player has low ownership right now

      List of recent differential/template postings:

In the post about how to help Mark's team yesterday
      http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/10/21/scout-notes-gameweek-8-sunday-2/?hc_page=1#hc_comment_5839875

In this post about differentials (owned by less than 5%)
      http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/10/22/the-suspension-tightrope-clipped-2/?hc_page=1#hc_comment_5846260

In the series of articles recently on the template of the top FPL teams currently
      http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/10/12/breaking-the-template-part-one/
      http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/10/13/breaking-the-template-part-two/

Every week we have "Spot The Differential" articles too

Lots of things here to encourage transfers, but what is really needed is articles to discourage them 😉

I think it depends on the player and their history.

My favorite example would be Demba Ba while at Newcastle last season. First half of the season, he never went more than 3 game weeks without scoring. By the 2nd week without scoring, people were dropping him while I, in late October, figured out that was the time to captain him. He was the key to my team doing really well until January, and when he went to Chelsea, I lost the plot.

Some players score in bunches. RVP had some very long dry spells last year, but those who held were rewarded with the highest scoring player in FPL.

That said, you have to make those decisions based on individual players and how their teams are using them.
