Champions League Picks – Matchday 4

There’s just a few hours left until Matchday 4 of this term’s Champions League matches gets underway, with this evening’s deadline at 19.30 GMT. For those playing the official UEFA Fantasy Champions League, we bring you a total of 10 players worth considering over Tuesday and Wednesday, with five potential picks for each of the two evening’s fixtures: Please also be aware that tomorrow’s deadline is 16.45 GMT, due to the early kick-off between Zenit and Porto: (missing the deadline last gameweek cost me 31 points on my bench!!!)

Tuesday

Franck Ribery – with Arjen Robben left out of Bayern’s trip to Viktoria Plzen due to a groin injury, we’re opting for the Frenchman to wreak havoc on the flank and help steer the champions into the knockout stages. At 11.0, Ribery is far from cheap but given that he bagged a brace and subsequent 13-point haul against the same opponents in the previous Matchday, his potential for returns looks enticing.

Alex Teixeira – the attacking midfielder’s contribution will be key as Shakhtar seek to avenge a 4-0 humbling at the hands of Leverkusen last time around. Teixeira – at just 5.5 – has so far found the net twice in this season’s tournament and if the previous game against the German club is anything to go by, tonight’s rematch in the Ukraine looks set to be a wide-open contest.

Zoran Tosic – the 5.0 priced former United midfielder rolls up to the Etihad with CSKA this evening in strong form. Tosic has already notched six times this term and has netted in each of the previous two Matchdays – the Russians posed plenty problems for Manuel Pellegrini’s side last time around and could well give them a scare again.

Vladimir Weiss – another midfielder who once plied their trade in Manchester. Weiss is available for a budget 4.0 and has already opened his account for Olympiacos against PSG in the Group C opener – team-mate Kostas Mitroglou comes in at 6.0 and has scored 17 goals in 12 matches so far this season.

Marquinos – a home clash with Anderlecht affords PSG the chance to rack up a third clean sheet in four this evening. The visitors are without top scorer Matias Suarez for the rest of the season, enhancing the hosts chances of further defensive returns – Marquinos, at 5.5, has scored twice in this year’s tournament, while the similarly priced left-back Maxwell looks an equally tempting shout, with two goals and a pair of assists in the league thus far.

Wednesday

Roman Shirokov – recently recovered from a groin injury, the Zenit midfielder has been key to his side’s league displays this season. The 6.5 priced Shirokov has produced five goals and five assists in just eight appearances and entertains Porto tomorrow evening, with the Russian side looking to do the double over their opponents after prevailing 1-0 in Portugal last time around.

Diego Costa – the Atletico Madrid forward found the net yet again at the weekend and has now scored 13 times in 12 La Liga appearances for Diego Simeone’s side. Costa looks a bargain at just 9.0 and entertains Austria Vienna tomorrow evening – bearing in mind he scored twice in the reverse fixture a couple of weeks ago, he looks poised to pick up the points yet again.

Filipe Luis – we’re backing Atletico big time this Matchday and also recommending their 5.5 priced left-back tomorrow evening. Luis picked up an assist in the previous group match and has also impressed creatively in the league, with a pair of assists to his name thus far – with the Austrians failing to find the net in any of their matches thus far, Simeone’s side are heavily backed for a clean sheet this time around.

Fabian Schär – coming in at just 4.5, the Basel centre-back is another backline option with the potential to pick up points at both ends of the pitch. Schär’s aerial threat in the box has already harvested four goals in all competitions this term and with visitors Steaua Bucharest mustering a single strike so far, he’ll be confident of delivering a clean sheet in Switzerland tomorrow night.

Marek Hamšík – is our final selection as Napoli prepare for the visit of Marseille. The attacking midfielder has flourished since the arrival of Rafa Benitez, with six Serie A goals helping his side to second spot in Italy’s top division – with five defeats and a draw in the last six in all competitions, the French side could be put to the sword by the 8.5 priced Slovakian.

Just looking at Arsenal's fixtures and noticed that they play Soton after the international break followed by Marseille at home 3 days later.

How do you think Wenger will approach those two games? I think his team selection could be a bit hard to predict as both games are of equal importance.

I think it will largely come down to who comes back latest/has the most travelling from international duty.

That is exactly the attitude that would see Arsenal losing at home to Marseille and leave them needing to get results against Dortmund and Napoli to secure qualification from the group!

      2. Hazard > Oscar is so sideways it hurts.
      3. Might want to keep Chelsea coverage.

Got to say Mourinho was right all along about Mazacar. With Ivanovic at RB and an "Attack no more" Cole at LB, it just doesn't work for us. It has to be 2 out of 3, along with Schurrle or Ramires.

Here's what I expect tomorrow vs Schalke.

    --------------Cech------------
    Ivano---Cahill----JT----Cole
    -----Ramires----Mikel--------
    Haz-----Oscar------Schurrle
    -----------Eto'o-----------------

    What I'd like to see

    --------------Cech------------
    Azpi---Ivano----JT----Cole
    -----Mikel----Oscar--------
    Rami-----Mata------Hazard
    ----Ba (Torres, when fit)----

I can see why Mou likes him. Almost like a 3rd CB when it comes to defending and attacking set-pieces. But, we struggle for width with him. Even though it was against Arsenal B in the League Cup, we looked a lot better with Azpi.

Don't like Ivanovic at CB. His crossing HAS TO improve when he plays RB. I like Oscar at CM. Him and Luiz could form a partnership. Also, we have 6 players competing for 3 spots. I'm sure one of them could offer the width on the right with Ramires/ Luiz/ Mikel pairing alongside Oscar at CM.

I also hope Azpi gets a start tomorrow ahead of Brana

Oscar - Luiz could be a beautiful CM pairing if developed.

If we don't focus on our width, we're going to continue to struggle. Newcastle will have shown the league how to defend against Chelsea now. Something has to be done on the right side. Hope Mou sees it too!

Looking at that I would , I think the hit will pay for itself this week and you've got him early if he goes on a run and he has low ownership ATM ,
I have Ozil / Brady / Mira at the mo and I'm .4 short of Ozil /Hazza/Silva/Brady (-4) I'd love those mids ATM , and they give you the flexibility to get Wally / Oscar / Gerrard say if they went on a run in a like for like swap.
IMHO 3 big mids / 2 cheapies and Suarez / Aguero + 1 is where your front 8 should be.

Hmmm tough choice. Now it gets into the eggs and baskets conversation.

Some will say Hazard because you already have Aguero, but IMO pick whoever you think will score more points as an individual in your squad.

I don't think that helped much though 😆 It's really tight between the two. Maybe Haz just edges it for goal threat.

double Southampton and triple Swansea defense 😯

      high risk defense

Coutinho is punty - Sturridge & Suarez mostly assist each other

      Lallana has tough fixtures soon

      like your strikers

I hope Whittingham doesnt stay in the middle. Do you think Bellamy was just used for his experience or can you see him coming back into it?

Sorry KoL, just saw this. I prefer Whittingham in the middle, think he's more likely to get FPL points that way and Bellamy did enough to get more starts.

    Post International Break:
Mignolet + Paulinho > Kelvin Davis + Walcott (if fit)

    Would give me:
    Boruc (Davis)
Coleman - Terry - Walker (Clyne - Chester)
Barkley - Hazard - Walcott - Silva (Whittingham)
    Benteke - Rooney - Sturridge

I know the absence of Aguero and Suarez will hurt me, but I'll roll with the punches until January.

    Having a bit of a dilemma...1FT and 0.2m itb

    Boruc (myhill)
    vidic dawson baines (burner wilson)
    ramsey michu barkley hazard (januzaj)
    suarez lukaku aguero

    - dawson/burner have awful fixtures in gw12/13 so relying on other 3 defenders to carry me...wilson is deadwood so plan was to upgrade him next gw to start alongside vidic + baines for two gw's

with that in mind, my transfers this gw depend on that
A: michu >> coutinho...leaving me with 0.5 to upgrade wilson to williams

B: michu + vidic >> silva + nasty (-4)..in this case i will need to spend my FT next gw on wilson >> vlaar...and nasty is better value then vidic

C: michu + wilson >> silva + rosenier/ward (-4)..removes the deadwood but then i will need to start the cheap def in gw12/13
