The Digest – Gameweek 11

Our final glance at the Gameweek gone by hails the consistency of Southampton’s captain after another stand-out display. We also highlight Newcastle’s recent resolve and wonder whether a certain Uruguayan is the one premium forward we simply cannot afford to be without:

The Player

A brilliant solo goal against Hull continued Adam Lallana’s stunning start to the season. With an assist and a couple of bonus points also accrued against the Tigers, the Southampton skipper delivered his third set of double figures in the last five Gameweeks – elevating him to third in the midfielder standings, behind Aaron Ramsey and Yaya Toure, on 61 points.

Having drawn blanks in each of the first four fixtures, Lallana was far from Fantasy radars as we focussed on Mauricio Pochettino’s resolute defence as a source of points instead. The subsequent matches, however, have seen Lallana strike an impressive consistency with attacking returns in five of the Saints last seven – including goals at home to Swansea and away to United.

Indeed, the Gameweek 8 Old Trafford match could be key when assessing his potential. Certainly, his last-gasp equaliser sparked the bandwagon into life – prior to that match he was priced at 6.1 but has now risen to 6.8, with over 57,000 new owners already this week; far and away more than any other midfield option.

In a season where consistency has been a real rarity amongst midfield options, Lallana’s ability to produce looks crucial for Fantasy managers and Pochettino alike. As Southampton gear up for a run of matches against Arsenal, Chelsea, City and Spurs in the next six, their defensive potential may well be set to take a short-term dip but Lallana’s 10-point haul at the home of the champions indicates he’s certainly capable of delivering against the odds.

The Team

Having struggled in the opening few games, Alan Pardew’s side enter the international break on the back of successive wins over Chelsea and Tottenham. Granted, Tim Krul’s heroics at the Lane bordered on the superhuman and there’s no doubt the visitors were more than a little fortunate, but the Magpies did also keep out Jose Mourinho’s side with a resilient Gameweek 10 performance at St James’ Park, which harvested a 2-0 triumph.

Prior to the Blues match, Pardew’s side looked poor defensively and had conceded in their previous six but a move to 4-4-2 seems to have instilled a little more steel to the Newcastle set-up. With Loic Remy moved from the left of a 4-3-3 into a central position alongside Shola Ameobi, Pardew’s bold decision to drop fan favourites Hatem Ben Arfa and Papiss Cisse has proven a masterstroke, with the work-rate of French pair Moussa Sissoko and Yoan Gouffran out wide keeping compatriot Ben Arfa on the bench.

Both Mike Williamson and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa have started the last two in central defence and come in at 4.4 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), though with Mathieu Debuchy suspended for the next league match, fit-again Fabricio Coloccini may return to the centre. That would see Yanga-Mbiwa shifted to right-back to cover for Debuchy, or left-back with Davide Santon switching flanks. It remains to be seen how Pardew approaches his centre-back pairing from there on in.

In addition to the new-found resilience, there are options on offer further up the pitch. Remy’s winner at the Lane taking his tally to seven for the season; with an assist also accrued, he’s played a part in eight of his side’s 15 goals and sits on 58 FPL points, just five behind Olivier Giroud in the forward standings. Yohan Cabaye also gives us an option in midfield, with a goal or assist in four of the last seven Gameweeks. As Pardew’s charges prepare for back-to-back home games with Norwich and West Brom, the duo – at 7.7 and 6.3 – have already picked up plenty new investors already this week as Fantasy managers look for a route into the resurgent Tyneside team.

The Talking Point

In a week where Arsenal and City – the league’s top scoring sides – failed to find the net, Luis Suarez surged up the Fantasy standings with yet another sublime display. Six games back from suspension and the Liverpool talisman is already joint-fourth in the FPL forward standings, serving up four sets of double figures in a series of incredible displays that have seen him average 10.7 points per game.

While Daniel Sturridge had initially kept pace upon his team-mate’s return to the fold, the England striker has offered little evidence of the Uruguayan’s explosive capacity for points. Sturridge may have scored in eight of his 11 appearances but he has managed double figures just once – Suarez, meanwhile, has delivered captaincy hauls of 26, 20, 34 and 32 points, helping save many a Gameweek and more than justifying the extra outlay at 11.9 to Sturridge’s 9.8.

Liverpool’s fixtures may continue to look promising but those Sturridge owners who have remained loyal due to his consistency have been punished severely in recent matches. With Hull, Norwich and West Ham in the next four, it’s no coincidence that Sturridge in the most sold frontman this week, while his strike-partner has received more transfers in than any other forward.

The captaincy issue may have dented Sturridge’s prospects but he’s not the only one to suffer in Suarez’ shadow. United duo Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie have risen up the rankings in recent weeks with some steady returns but, in terms of captaincy potential, have served up double figures only twice and three times in 10 appearances respectively.

Only Sergio Aguero has mirrored Suarez’ total of four but the City forward has played 10 times to the Liverpool forward’s six; his blank at Sunderland was the third time the Argentine has failed to produce points – perhaps no coincidence that on two of those occasions, David Silva has been missing from the XI. Indeed, with Silva likely to miss out again ahead of back-to-back home games with Spurs and Swansea, Aguero’s chances of more explosive returns may be a little less enticing.

Suarez may have a Goodison encounter with Everton up next but given his current form, the Toffees will do well to keep him at bay in the first Merseyside derby of the season. The only slight caveat could be fatigue, with Suarez set to return from his World Cup play-off with Uruguay against Jordan, a little over 48-hours prior to the Premier League outing.

Currently sitting in 27% of FPL teams, Suarez is now the highest owned of any premium-priced forward and despite the return to form of United’s duo and Aguero’s strike rate under Manuel Pellegrini, Suarez has quickly shown that, more than any frontman this season, he has the consistency to make or break a Gameweek – going without him over the next few fixtures may be an oversight many a Fantasy campaign could struggle to recover from.

Too expensive IMO, at least 2 cheapos needed in there as 4 at the back is where the value is at this season. There is no way Snoddy or Sess will outscore a big hitting def.

I agree with the overall picks though, just need to get rid of Snoddy or Sess IMO

Interesting. I'm still not set on the defences being worth of ultra large investment. 2 mid high two mid one cheap template midfield allows 2 mid high 1 mid and 2 cheap defence, works well for me.

well look at it this way, A clean sheet pretty much has the same value nowerdays as a goal, as baps mostly go to defenders if they keep it clean at the back. Strong teams will get about 12-15 Clean sheets per season and the expensive defenders about 2-3 goals maybe 1 asstst to the end of that.

None of the Snoddys or Sessegnons will come close to that

Well obviously I can be wrong. But I bet I wont be, just look at current scores and defenders kicking mids ass in terms of value. And the CS numbers have gone back to the norm now too, so no excuses of abnormal season.

Everyone said krul was great while they kept hitting him in the face. Probably had 1 save where he had to stretch himself. Their best chance was when Mbiwa got the ball away and that was from a deflection as well, not from their skill.
Other best chance was for Eriksen to put it in the corner but he was unable to do so. Just poor quality from them so far, while newcastle defense was poor in that game. Its unlikely they wont improve, but not by much IMO. Really looking forward to seeing what Lamela can offer, I think he is still the one to watch there.

Great post, always like seeing this stuff that definitely took you time to do. I was wondering what if there were a correlation between price rises and club fan #s, as in are there just a ton of Arsenal groupies out there fueling some of the astronomical rises we've seen, but Southampton makes me think it really is about FPL points.

Would still love to see FPL show the number of self-identified fans for each club.

The pricing formula must be wrong, or at least suspect.

        1/5
        1/5
        1/6
        1/4

        Thst doesn't make sense...

Makes my team value look nice though.

        I've grabbed 65 rises (106.5 tv)

Well you could think of it as at the start of the season people pick from a much wider pool of players because it's not clear who the 'must haves' are going to be.

As the weeks go by, the pool of viable players narrows down, so everyone gets on board those relatively few players, but the wider pool of players who get ditched see more price falls.

The stats are right - there are definitely a lot more price falls than rises. Just look at the totalfpl log of changes for any given day.

            I agree.

I know they are correct, I was more querying the fpl price structure...

I have suffered a few falls but not too many (6/7 tops), I've been price whoring for Jan WC

The FPL price structure is fine. They have avoided the trap that the last Fantasy World Cup fell into of providing too generous an increasing budget, too many free or cheap transfers and no 50% capital gains tax on these transfers, with the result that it was far too easy in the later stages to include all the most expensive players in your squad.

Most of us in FFS have increased our TVs, but a large number of casuals will have seen their TVs actually decreasing. The highest score of the GW is quite often a casual or dead team with a low ranking and a TV of less than 100.0.

So guys, how important is selling value come January Wildcard.

What would you estimate an extra £1m of selling value would be worth at that stage for the rest of the season?

I ask as lots of people dedicate their transfers for the first half of the season to building serious team value and accruing a very high selling value for the second half of the season.

This year, I'm not so sure. If both RvP and Ozil join Suarez and Aguero as 'essentials'/near essentials, then yes we're going to need to dig deep. But so far money hasn't been much of an issue. I have 6m in the bank at the moment.

I ignore team value as much as possible, unless it is a case of one player dropping by .3 and other going up by .3 I never make moves based on this.

I could be wrong though, no way to prove my strategy is correct.

Pens shouldn't make that much difference. I'm not sure why people are happy to pay a premium for penalty takers, but not for free kick specialists like Yaya.

I like it when they are both, like Lambert or Snodgrass when he used to be on. Often these dead ball takers will accrue 33% of their points from set peices, or maybe a lot lot more!!

Interesting point -- not sure how many fk goals vs pks are scored in a given year, but I'd imagine them to be fairly close (disclaimer: no idea hence "imagine" if someone swoops in with a wildly divergent stat).

Have money in the bank to get Roo for him but will wait till next GW; can captain Suarez myself and not sure about Roo away at Cardiff. Benteke-Rooney-Sturridge

    mig-harper
    Baines-Vlaar-Rat-Clyne-Jageilka
    Ramsey-Oscar-Lallana-Bacuna-Morrison

Not a must, but a good idea. Suarez is my only Pool player, might Get a defender as well. Thinking Agger maybe. Who's your picks?

Well the obvious one, Than a def(GJ or Agger) and Cout, I see nothing wrong with 2 defs either or Migs in goal.
Other teams I like the look of are WBA and EVErton, this is just at the first clance. But need to look ahead so not to transfer out the wrong players

GJ porbably well over Agger after thinking about it, still a small chance of rotation at the CB positions probably. While GJ has nobody to compete with

FA Cup run is just as tiring. I remember a bit on SSN one day showing the teams that had done best in Europe for the previous 5 seasons or so had all dodged out in early FA cup rounds. Fergie used to make a point of it at one stage.

Critique my team, who should I bench? I think I have got it right, but wanna see some opinions,

      Mignolet

Coleman dawson Chico (Clyne Wilson) - I think spurs have better chance of CS vs city than sou do vs ars

Sessegnon hazard Ozil Ramsey (rmorrisson vs Chelsea)

      Benteke Suarez aguero

Captaincy is going to be literally a coin flip between Ozil and aguero. Fatigue will effect suarez and it's not usually high scoring.

Yeah, Dawson vs. Clyne is really just a flip of the coin for me. I think I'm going Dawson, and I agree Spurs have a better chance of a CS.

        Leave mid as is.

I wouldn't captain Aguero against Spurs personally. Benteke could be a nice unique but not going off the best form. I just don't know how high scoring Arsenal v. Soton is going to be.

Thoughts on who to play next GW would be appreciated:

      1. Mignolet vs. Harper? (leaning towards Harper)
      2. Two of Clyne/Coleman/Dawson (leaning towards second 2)
      3. Ravel vs. Lallana (leaning towards Ravel)

1 Harper, although expect Liverpool cs to come back now Coutinho has changed their formation

3 lallana more likely to score imo. I think arsenal will concede but win 2/3-1

Saving seems sensible. Obviously walker has crap fixtures especially this week so you could lose him if you know who you want anh how much funds you are willing to spend or want to free up but I would have thought having the flexibility a saved transfer brings would be better. I have similar team and toying with same decision as can likely improve my score this week but not clear on my next step after that do will probably save to give myself options next week without a hit.
