Champions League Picks – Matchday 5

We’ve a few hours left until Matchday 5 of this term’s Champions League matches gets underway. For those playing the official UEFA Fantasy Champions League, we bring you a total of 10 players worth considering over Tuesday and Wednesday, with five potential picks for each of the two evening’s fixtures. Please also be aware that the deadline for Tuesday and Wednesday is 16.45 GMT, due to the early kick-off between Zenit and Atletico today and CSKA against Bayern tomorrow:

The big news is that most of us will be looking for heavy-hitting strikers this week. Lionel Messi is injured and Cristiano Ronaldo has been ruled out of a prime home tie with Galatasaray due to a thigh problem. Both Diego Costa and David Villa have been left behind in Spain ahead of Atletico’s trip to Zenit, whilst Bayen are bereft of Mario Mandzukic for tomorrow’s visit to Moscow. Furthermore, City have already qualified and are expected to field a somewhat weakened side, with question marks raised over Sergio Aguero’s starting role for a home game against Viktoria Plzen.

With this in mind, my tips this week are forward-heavy, though it’s also worth noting that in midfield, some popular absentees include Bayern’s Franck Ribery and Bastian Schweinsteiger, Leverkusen’s Sidney Sam, Napoli’s Marek Hamsik, Barcelona’s Adriano and Atletico’s Arda Turan.

Tuesday

José Manuel Pinto – with first-choice stopper Victor Valdes ruled out of the remaining two group games though injury, Pinto, at just 3.5, offers a budget route into the Barcelona defence for a trip to Ajax and home clash with Glasgow Celtic.

Oliver Giroud – a win at home to Marseille will place Arsenal in pole position to qualify from Group F. The visitors have been lacking defensive resolve in recent matches and, having notched twice this weekend, Giroud, at 9.0, allows you to replace Messi or Ronaldo and have spare change for an upgrade elsewhere.

Jackson Martinez – the Porto frontman entertains Austria Vienna this evening and will be looking to extend the form that has produced nine goals already this season. Priced at just 8.0, Martinez will fancy his chances against a backline that has conceded seven times in the last two group games.

Max Meyer – with Marco Hoger sidelined for Schalke, the highly-rated youngster looks set to continue in “the hole” in a 4-2-3-1. Meyer has netted four times and picked up a pair of assists in all competitions this term and priced at just 5.5, has a trip to Steaua Bucharest followed by a home clash against Basel.

Josue – Once again we go for the bargain basement Porto player. He’s on set pieces and penalties and has 1 goal and 5 assists to his name this season.

Wednesday

Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Messi and Ronaldo owners will likely be jumping over to the big Swede en masse for PSG’s home game against Olympiacos. Second only to the latter in the forward standings, the 12.5 priced Ibrahimovic has notched seven times in the last three group games and looks a real captaincy contender for tomorrow’s round of matches.

Edin Dzeko – with his side already qualified, the big Bosnian is expected to be handed a start at home to Viktoria Plzen. Bearing in mind City’s Etihad form, Dzeko, at 9.5, looks a tempting acquisition against a backline that has conceded eight in two road trips.

Paul Pogba – the former United man has been one of Juventus’ stand out players this season, firing four goals and three assists in Serie A so far. The Italian side are on a rich run of form ahead of a home clash with Copenhagen tomorrow evening – having struggled to a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture back in Gameweek 1, the “Old Lady” will be looking to Pogba (5.5) to help fire them to victory.

Stefan Kiessling – a home clash with United will hold no fear for Leverkusen, who have dropped just two points in front of their own fans in the Bundesliga this term. With David Moyes’ men struggling for defensive solidity, the 9.0 priced Kiessling will be looking to replicate the form which has harvested 12 goals and six assists in 19 appearances thus far.

Simon Rolfes – another Leverkusen option, Rolfes comes in at just 5.5 and has served up some impressive midfield performances over 2013/14. Having found the net in three of the first four Matchdays, his consistency has been key to the German outfit’s fortunes in this season’s campaign.

I think Ozil to Walcott is a good transfer, looking at doing it myself, but maybe not just yet.

Barkley has failed to score more than 2 points since GW6 and game time is not so secure, would stay away personally unless you already have him and picked him up when cheap.

Sess is a good shout, but having him always seems to be painful waiting game until he has that one big week.

What about Lallana instead of Sess, and Ravel instead of Barkley?

Thanks, I figure with Barkley that he is still on great playing form, but it's just not translating into FPL points, and Everton seem brighter with him on the pitch, but I do know what you mean about playing time. I have Ravel already...

With my Benteke, Rooney, Aguero forwards, and Fonte, Davies, GJ and Nastasic all over 5m at the back, it's left me a bit short in midfield.

As a Gooner I rarely invest in the Arsenal defence for cleanies as we're happy outscoring weaker teams. We tend to keep cleanies in games where we're cautious and fearful of the opposition threat, the rest of the time we're not bothered about conceding once in a big win. So to make matters worse we keep cleanies in games you wouldn't necessarily expect us to.

Example: 4 cleanies in 12 so far in the league, against Liverpool, Spurs, Southampton, and Palace after we got a player sent off and shut up shop.

Teams we didn't keep cleanies against include Villa, Fulham, Sunderland, Stoke, Norwich, WBA and Swansea.

We'll get a reasonable number over the season, but not brilliant value for the price. Last season we was our best season defensively for a while and even then we only got 14 CS from 38 games which isn't really that brilliant. For comparison, the much cheaper Stoke got 12, West Ham and Sunderland got 11. Most of the cleanies arrived in the second half of the season where again we shut up shop looking to win games 1-0. Now we've got Ozil and the attack is stronger, we're happy to attack again.

Agreed. However, this means in games you keep cleanies, they are likely to be low scoring and Mert/Kosc will be up for 3 baps.

Out of the perceived top 7, Arsenal's form+fixtures put them on top of pile for defensive returns at the minute imo.

That's true, I'd expect decent baps for Mert and Kosc when we keep cleanies.

Again, I caution against treating easy fixtures as clean sheets with Arsenal though, because we don't play them the same way.

You can get equal or better points for less budget with budget defenders at home imo.

I generally look to minimize spending in defence, it's better spent on strikers and the mids when they eventually fire. I don't think Murner is that bad an option looking at the long term and they're home to Palace this week which is a great cleanie chance. I'd go Rat if Reid wasn't out. I'm also watching Flanagan very closely.

I am not a fan of comparing seasons, for example, you cannot compare this seasons Stoke to last seasons. The other factor is Arsenal set up is a far more sucessful one in terms of defence this season, they leave the cbs sit with proper cover in front of them. From that foundation they have plenty of attacking firepower to to the damage in front of them.

Stoke changed manager. The other thing anyway is that I'm saying Arsenal are different from last season. They're attacking more. They simply held onto their lead in the second half of last season. Surely someone apart from me remembers when they were regularly winning 1-0 and frustrating all owners of Arsenal attackers? They did it to QPR in fact if I recall correctly.

They are attacking more, but from a far more solid base which is the point I'm making, were constantly caugth out playing too high a line previous seasons. With the likes off Flamini it the backline which sits deeper gets protection, plus the ball is is passed foward quickly to their attacking players of which they are plenty.

i dnt think against tottenham its a good idea
      maybe after the everton game

find a chelsea or city defender instead
      they have better fixtures

Always activate on matchday 6. Think about how many teams could qualify tonight/tomorrow and play weakened team in the last group games.

in form newcastle away and then city at home followed by 3 very good fixtures....
depending on how much ur squad is solid and whether u have any pressing transfers to make

As Madrid are virtually guaranteed to be top of their group, is it too risky to add them into an accumulator? Normally I'd expect a win in this fixture but lack of motivation + rotation + no Ronaldo could lead to a draw

I was all set to get rid of Evra to free up funds, then he scored and has decent fixtures....

Not sure I can see Spurs scoring against anyone let alone Man U.

Even when we're terrible at the back, he's one of the most attacking defenders available. When we do manage a cleanie, he's normally ahead of the CBs for baps too. Keep!

Bayern will be without Mandzukic, Pizarro, Ribéry, Schweinsteiger, Badstuber and Shaqiri, all of whom didn't flown out to Moscow with the team.

In the squad instead: Pierre Emile Höjbjerg, Mitchell Weiser and Julian Green
