Champions League Picks – Matchday 5

We’ve a few hours left until Matchday 5 of this term’s Champions League matches gets underway. For those playing the official UEFA Fantasy Champions League, we bring you a total of 10 players worth considering over Tuesday and Wednesday, with five potential picks for each of the two evening’s fixtures. Please also be aware that the deadline for Tuesday and Wednesday is 16.45 GMT, due to the early kick-off between Zenit and Atletico today and CSKA against Bayern tomorrow:

The big news is that most of us will be looking for heavy-hitting strikers this week. Lionel Messi is injured and Cristiano Ronaldo has been ruled out of a prime home tie with Galatasaray due to a thigh problem. Both Diego Costa and David Villa have been left behind in Spain ahead of Atletico’s trip to Zenit, whilst Bayen are bereft of Mario Mandzukic for tomorrow’s visit to Moscow. Furthermore, City have already qualified and are expected to field a somewhat weakened side, with question marks raised over Sergio Aguero’s starting role for a home game against Viktoria Plzen.

With this in mind, my tips this week are forward-heavy, though it’s also worth noting that in midfield, some popular absentees include Bayern’s Franck Ribery and Bastian Schweinsteiger, Leverkusen’s Sidney Sam, Napoli’s Marek Hamsik, Barcelona’s Adriano and Atletico’s Arda Turan.

Tuesday

José Manuel Pinto – with first-choice stopper Victor Valdes ruled out of the remaining two group games though injury, Pinto, at just 3.5, offers a budget route into the Barcelona defence for a trip to Ajax and home clash with Glasgow Celtic.

Oliver Giroud – a win at home to Marseille will place Arsenal in pole position to qualify from Group F. The visitors have been lacking defensive resolve in recent matches and, having notched twice this weekend, Giroud, at 9.0, allows you to replace Messi or Ronaldo and have spare change for an upgrade elsewhere.

Jackson Martinez – the Porto frontman entertains Austria Vienna this evening and will be looking to extend the form that has produced nine goals already this season. Priced at just 8.0, Martinez will fancy his chances against a backline that has conceded seven times in the last two group games.

Max Meyer – with Marco Hoger sidelined for Schalke, the highly-rated youngster looks set to continue in “the hole” in a 4-2-3-1. Meyer has netted four times and picked up a pair of assists in all competitions this term and priced at just 5.5, has a trip to Steaua Bucharest followed by a home clash against Basel.

Josue – Once again we go for the bargain basement Porto player. He’s on set pieces and penalties and has 1 goal and 5 assists to his name this season.

Wednesday

Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Messi and Ronaldo owners will likely be jumping over to the big Swede en masse for PSG’s home game against Olympiacos. Second only to the latter in the forward standings, the 12.5 priced Ibrahimovic has notched seven times in the last three group games and looks a real captaincy contender for tomorrow’s round of matches.

Edin Dzeko – with his side already qualified, the big Bosnian is expected to be handed a start at home to Viktoria Plzen. Bearing in mind City’s Etihad form, Dzeko, at 9.5, looks a tempting acquisition against a backline that has conceded eight in two road trips.

Paul Pogba – the former United man has been one of Juventus’ stand out players this season, firing four goals and three assists in Serie A so far. The Italian side are on a rich run of form ahead of a home clash with Copenhagen tomorrow evening – having struggled to a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture back in Gameweek 1, the “Old Lady” will be looking to Pogba (5.5) to help fire them to victory.

Stefan Kiessling – a home clash with United will hold no fear for Leverkusen, who have dropped just two points in front of their own fans in the Bundesliga this term. With David Moyes’ men struggling for defensive solidity, the 9.0 priced Kiessling will be looking to replicate the form which has harvested 12 goals and six assists in 19 appearances thus far.

Simon Rolfes – another Leverkusen option, Rolfes comes in at just 5.5 and has served up some impressive midfield performances over 2013/14. Having found the net in three of the first four Matchdays, his consistency has been key to the German outfit’s fortunes in this season’s campaign.

    Hi All,

I have been struggling with injuries lately, and whilst I had planned to swoop for another big hitter in midfield this week, I've had to put those plans on hold to address a baines injury (baines --> mertesacker).

I now have 6.7M in the bank earning me no interest and no points; Are you able to recommend any "points hits" this week, which will likely pay off?

    mignolet, lewis
    mertesacker, yanga-mbiwa, chester
    hazard (v), lallana, sessegnon, morrison
    suarez, rooney, lukaku (c)

    jedinak, fonte, williams

I have walcott, snodgrass, coutinho. mcauley, glen johnson and negredo on my watchlist.

I am aware that I do not have aguero, but I fancy keeping hold of rooney for the december fixtures and don't want to leave myself unbalanced overall.

    Clyne -> £4.6m

Who do you think is the best option?

    A) Vlaar
    B) Flanagan
    C) Yanga-Mbiwa
    D) Someone else

Avoid Vlaar - a return to 4-3-3 for Villa will destroy clean sheet chances. Avoid the other 2 as well due to rotation.

Options I would consider: Rat (if fit), Collins, Murner (if he fits into a rotation - only play at home), Burner, Ward.

Having said all that, you can play Clyne in GW14, 16, 17 & 18 comfortably and possibly in GW15 too. Maybe shift someone else to fill in his tough fixtures?

        Thanks.

The problem is that I've got Boruc, as well, and don't fancy them both over this period of tricky fixture's. The other option is that I just play Clyne this week, saving the FT, and 'downgrade' Ozil -> Walcott and then perhaps bring in someone like GJ next week for Clyne, instead. Views?

Ahh ok. Maybe upgrade Boruc instead? Defenders are easy to bench - I assume Boruc is your only playing keeper.

If you're set on losing Clyne I'd get Rat or Collins in. Hold fire on Ozil for a bit, especially to Theo.

Yeah, Boruc is my only playing keeper.

So you prefer Rat/Collins over Vlaar who's got the much better fixtures then? Interesting. I suppose Big Sam can sort out a defence can't he...

            Cheers, definitely food for thought...

Can I ask what the big deal is with Theo Walcott on this site?

He played 4 games at the start of the season and not a single goal was scored, he missed some absolute sitters.

He has now missed a wopping 7 games, had surgery, and is just coming back into playing competitive games.

OK the gamble might pay off, he might come back with a blast, but I honestly don't see it happening for a few weeks. Arsenal have EVE mci CHE coming soon too!

He hasn't been explosive this season so far. But his last 2 seasons are a good measure to go by to suggest he will start being so soon. He's also been fairly consistent for long stretches. It's a season where lots are trying to catch up so looking for the next big thing is what everyone is trying to do. Could easily be Theo

this is my point, is it because people remember his huge 26 pointer or something from last season?

The reason why Cazorla is not getting a mention is because some bloke called Mesut Ozil has taken his position where he scored those points last year.

Santi is out of position whereas when Walcott's fully fit, he'll be straight into the right forward role.

Back to the orignal point which started this, Ozil has not shifted Cazorla out of position. Flamini can not be omitted either. Arsenal are a flexible unit their formation canbe tweaked with from game to game, for eg,

                        Arteta Flamini/Wiltshire
                        Ozil Ramsey Cazorla

I tend to agree, it can pay off and good luck to those who go for it. Fact remains that even if he posts returns his low ownership won't be to damaging. Swapping the likes of Ozil out for him is very risky imo, he is very caable of scoring big also.

True, although his returns were with nearly 50% more playing time than Theo, and was erratic and unpredictable at best. Did have him for the hattrick though 😉

That playing time is potentially a positive for Cazorla though as he's far less injury prone.

I think you need to insert the words "the majority" on this site. Many posters on here have different views on such matters. I personally think he a good number of games away from being a viable option that is assuming he delivers returns. Many have and are talking about getting him in now, I do actually wonder if they will take the plunge.

Members stats aren't quite correct, for example on the comparison tool it doesn't show Oscar's assist or one of hazards assists this game week.

That's because, as far as official Opta data are concerned, they aren't assists. We'd rather stick to official Opta data so assists are consistent season to season when looking back at players now and in the future.

But what's the point of an FPL comparison when they also add in spurious assists. Might as well use the pure data.

You can do that by looking at the FPL points?

The whole point of looking at assists and general play is to attempt to predict future outcomes. FPL only assists is often random event. You can always look at shots on target which will encompass an FPL assist.

Oscar's one is interesting though. Is drawing penalties/free kicks totally random or could it be predictive? I guess not many players draw multiple penalties over the course of a season so it's probably not that big of a deal.

The way I look at it is the chances of Chelsea getting a penalty in any game is pretty high. Not easy to predict who it will be, but still it's definitely something to think about.

I see your point but, when using the comparison tool, very rarely do I look at assists and goals - I'm far more interested in the data such as touches in the box or passes received in the final third. As Granville says below, we know all too well how two players compare in FPL ranks and points - the compare tool is used to reveal differences in other areas which may help to project returns in the future.

It's something we can look at - the only issue is that it's pretty complicated to calculate from the data we get from Opta.

One of the reason's that Opta update assists post-match sometimes is because there's a certain amount of manual checking and changes done to their data in order to apply them. I don't think it's very easy for us to calculate the FPL assists from our feed - some of it appears to involve a human element rather than a statistical event present in our data.

They are OPTA assists, not FPL assists, so they regularly don't match up. An assist for a rebound is hardly an assist, so OPTA don't show it as such.

Take Ozil off of your list of concerns Walcott being back will help Ozil and tbh Ozil has been fairly unlucky not to score better than he has. Toure --> GJ then the week after Townsend ---> Mirrallas/Cabaye/Sess.

Good point. Didnt notice your lack of Chelski, Townsend --> Oscar/ Hazard, How much would you be left with in the bank after? Some Liverpool defensive cover for next few weeks would be nice. So would actually say get Oscar if it means you can get GJ too still

    Rooney, Aguero(C), Suarez

    Juanuzaj, Rangel, Chester

Good to go? As long as Walcott slot back in to his usual role quickly will be doing Ozil --> Wally Rangel ---> Evra. Cabaye ---> Mirallas ready for GW 16. I know planning that far ahead is a bit silly but barring injuries should be fairly straight forward. Which should leave me with a strong base going into the festive period.

I don't like option 1. You can always play Boruc and bench Clyne for the majority of games - Only do this if you have to make a transfer. 2 is ok but you're always at risk of transferring out the wrong player and/or transferring in the wrong player. I think 3 is the right call in this case.

I think Boruc is an excellent option this week. Lots of saves points and he's likely to be offered a penalty save.
