The Digest – Gameweek 12

We take one last look at Gameweek 12 to hail the impact of Manuel Pellegrini on a certain Argentine. Palace’s recent resilience may be boosted by the arrival of Stoke’s former boss, whilst the captaincy issue in any given Gameweek seems to be whittled down to one of two South Americans:

The Player

Faced with the Premier League’s most resilient away defence last weekend, Sergio Aguero once again served up a huge Fantasy haul as City humiliated Spurs at the Etihad. While they’d put seven past Norwich in the previous home encounter, the visit of Andre Villas-Boas’ side seemed a different proposition, with Tottenham conceding a single goal on their travels prior to last Sunday.

The absence of David Silva made little difference to the hosts as Aguero tore apart the visitors’ backline, with a brace and assist in the 6-0 demolition helping him to 15 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points; his fifth set of double figures in 10 league starts.

Now up to 99 points for the campaign, Aguero’s prospects have been re-ignited by the arrival of both Pellegrini and Alvaro Negredo – a player his manager has described as “the perfect player for the Premier League”.

Incredibly, City have now scored more goals (26) at home than any side has managed in total and while their toils on the road may affect their title aspirations, Aguero’s form remains consistent, having produced the points in three of his four starts on the road. With 12 strikes and eight assists to his name already, the Argentine has already played a part in more goals than over the entire 2012/13 campaign under Roberto Mancini (12 goals, three assists) and with Pellegrini determined to go on the offensive, Aguero’s pivotal role in one of the most potent top-flight attacks we’ve seen for some time looks a gift-wrapped present for Fantasy managers as the season unfolds.

The Team

New boss Tony Pulis arrives at Palace in the perfect moment. Having leaked goals in each of their first 10 league matches, the Eagles’ ship has been steadied by caretaker boss Keith Millen, who has engineered back-to-back clean sheets against Everton and Hull, with a narrow win at the KC helping them climb off the foot of the table.

In his first match in charge, Pulis rolls up to injury-hit Norwich, with playmaker Robert Snodgrass and big-money forward Ricky Van Wolfswinkel both consigned to the treatment room . After that, it’s three matches in four at Selhurst Park (WHM, CAR, che, NEW) as Pulis looks to instill the resilience that helped the Potters to 30 clean sheets in the previous three seasons.

Certainly, judging by his time at the Britannia, we won’t be expecting a free-flowing brand of football – Pulis, essentially, is the anti-Pellegrini, and will be charged with no more than ensuring top-flight survival at whatever cost. If he can build on the defensive stability introduced by Millen, Pulis may yet bring Palace’s backline options into consideration – indeed, with a run of seven home games that reads (WHM, CAR, NEW, NOR, STO, HUL, WBA) he could hardly ask for a better chance to make Selhurst Park a fortress. With Julian Speroni at 4.5 in FPL and Danny Gabbidon, Joel Ward and Dean Moxey all just 4.0, there are budget options aplenty should the former Britannia boss make his mark.

The Talking Point

Aguero’s stunning haul against Tottenham kept Luis Suarez in the shade for once but the Uruguayan was also in the points, with a goal and assist in the Merseyside derby ensuring his incredible tally ticked over. While we saw a number of popular frontline options rack up the returns this week, with Romelu Lukaku, Olivier Giroud and Wayne Rooney all returning double figures, the explosive consistency of Suarez and Aguero is leaving the rest standing.

Since the Liverpool forward returned from suspension in Gameweek 6, the highest haul delivered from a Suarez-Aguero partnership over the subsequent seven fixtures has been (13, 7, 16, 17, 18, 16, 15) – right now, they are almost limiting the captaincy call down to just two players in any given Gameweek. Impressively, given that Aguero was sidelined for Gameweek 6, this means that he’s outscored Suarez in four of the six league fixtures he’s been available for since the Uruguayan’s return.

Indeed, despite the fact that Rooney has registered three sets of double figures in the last four (12, 12, 4, 11), it almost seems a gamble not to have the armband on either Suarez or Aguero at any point. The United frontman has averaged an impressive seven points per game this term, yet this still pales into insignificance against the South American duo – Suarez has managed 10.4, while Aguero has delivered nine ppg.

Whilst the likes of Lukaku, with seven goals and an assist in eight appearances for Everton, and Loic Remy, with eight strikes in nine starts for Newcastle, have more than delivered during their loan spells, no one can get near Suarez and Aguero right now. With Liverpool travelling to Hull this Sunday and Aguero welcoming Swansea to the Etihad, both look poised to deliver big time yet again – those managers bold enough to roll into the weekend without one or both in their front three face an uncomfortable couple of days.

    Everton CBs! Jagielka versus Distin:

It looks cut and dry looking at the points, but I decided to look at the data before making up my mind.

    * Both have played every single minute this season, so we can for the sake of argument assume both are nailed on.
    * Both have similar attacking stats, both in terms of chances created and goal threat. Jagielka's stats are a little better, but the difference is definitely negligible (tough word!) considering the limited data available.

BPS is where people, including me, assume the difference is at, considering Jags has 89 total, Distin has 80.

Take away the 3 BPS from the Jags assist (I definitely would since again, attacking stats are the same).
Remove 2 negative BPS Distin have gotten from YCs (random as well since the last 3 seasons Distin has 7 YCs while Jags has 6 YCs).

End result is a difference of 5 (FIVE) BPS over 12 games.

    Conclusion:
Is 0.4 BPS pr game worth the 0.7M premium? Considering how little date we have, I'd argue h*ll no. To me Distin seems the best option by far, unless somebody has any data to back up Distin being more prone to rotation or something similar.

I'm going Distin GW16 if I'm getting an Everton defender, which looks tempting.

if you had Coleman, would you sell him on to free up funds, and buy Distin later (for Terry) or keep Coleman and just sell Terry

I am totally unconvinced that a Chelsea defender is worth the premium price

If I had Coleman and Terry now, I'd keep both for this GW, then ditch Coleman for someone else for next GW (not an Everton defender). Then, if you really don't want Terry, do Terry -> Distin GW16.

Yupp, depends heavily on the rest of your team. I'd want a way to get Walcott, but I'm not sure this is the GW. Again, I'd stick this GW and make the decision next GW depending on how things are looking. I wouldn't averse to ditching JT if it meant upgrading Brady to Walcott.

Thanks. Well, you have to weigh up the pros and cons. For me, the 0.7M difference in price should outweigh Jags slight edge so far. Not necessarily the same conclusion everybody comes to.

Jags has 14 bonus and Distin has five. That's a 9 pt difference over the first 12 games in bonus alone. Jags also has 16 pts more.

I can see why its convenient to say lets forget these points for Jags, but the fact remains that over 12 games a 16 pt difference is more than worth 0.7m premium.

It also shows that consistenly when it comes to bonus in games with a clean sheet Jags out scores Distin...once again showing his premium is about right.

In a team with Lukaku scoring and with Baines - when he's back, bonus are hard to come by in Everton's ranks.

Anyway despite that have a hot topic...its good discussion and one many will be thinking of this week given Baines's injury.

I still feel the points are "lying" in terms of what we are seeing in the stats and how these affect the points. My point is that Jags could just as well be the one with a couple of YCs and Distin with the assist. 0.7M in the defender-world is a huuuge premium for a player in the same position, with the same attacking stats and in the same team.

Its often known as the Paulinho principle or the Townsend Conundrum. Both have great attacking stats...but why no points to show for it? Because sometimes stats can be misleading. They are best used with wider knowledge. Townsend is a prolific shooter at goal, even gets it on target, according to the stats but using my eyes I see that he is a poor shooter and has a weak foot...something Opta can't measure. Paulinho similar

With Distin and Jagielka, it is clear that Jagielka does just that little bit more each game there's a clean sheet to warrant bonus. The underlying stats may say they are equal, but reality says that Jagielka has enough of an edge to justify the premium.

Put it this way Rooney is on my Christmas shopping list for Gameweek 15-19. Man Utd fixtures are incredible then.

Lukaku is good but not anywhere near the same level of consistency.

Only an injury is going to make me dump Aguero and Suarez.

So in conclusion for me strikers are like this in order
              Suarez Aguero
              Rooney RVP
              Remy/Lukaku depending on fixtures
              Giroud/Benteke
              The rest

                I've had Rooney since GW6

                I have the SAR strikeforce

I'm also considering dumping JT in a GW or 2

He has decent goal threat yes, but Chelsea don't convince me defensively at the minute, PLUS if Azpi can nail down a spot he's 1.1 less that JT

Jarvis (last season) and Snodgrass are other players where their stats make you think they will keep pace with similar players....but often other players have something more to them....in both their cases they are in teams with poor strikers. In addition Opta doesn't pick up that while their crosses are on target, they are maybe just a little bit too fast or have a little bit too much spin.

I agree with the fact that stats don't tell you everything. I haven't watched that many Everton games, so not easy to comment on how different they are in playing style. Whether the edge Jags has shown this season is enough to warrant the premium is to me an open discussion with no straight answer. 0.7M is the difference between a 3.9M cheapie and players like Clyne/Shaw. I don't think the difference between Jags and Distin is that big.

They are both great options. Distin is a good defender will get the odd bonus and clean sheets all for a great price. Jagielka will get more bonus and the same level of clean sheets. As you say depends how much people feel they want to spend extra to get those few extra points.

Coleman has more attacking threat, but is not doing well on bonus, even with his 1 goal 1 assist. Haven't looked too much into his stats, he's also at a premium so the only thing that could get me interested is if they move to a 3-4-3.

I think if like me you got Coleman at 5.0 he may be worth holding, if you don't have an Everton defender and wanted one come GW16, Coleman is halfway between Jags and Distin and so not an option IMO.

I have been pondering this for a while before I eventually cave and made Jagielka my transfer.

Bearing in mind that we are still in early days in the season, and Distin hasn't equalled Jagielka so far for bps, I predict that won't change for the rest of the season.

I'm ok withthe 0.7 difference right now, at least until my January wildcard (where hopefully I can take advantage of any price rises, and Evertons fixtures do not become as key as they are over Christmas for us).

Plus Distin doesn't have the attacking (albeit only minutely better) prowess then Jagielka. I a game where choosing the right defender from each team is important, I'm sticking with the premium price.

LFC Arsenal Chelsea would be my top three at least, not sure about which one is the most important.

I'd say fixtures are more important for defenders than attackers, but form is definitely not something you should overlook. Many people have kept their Everton and Southampton players, for instance, even though fixtures are really toughening up. It depends entirely on your bench, if you can bench an Everton defender for instance in his next two there's no problem keeping.

The great Rooney conundrum still bugs me

He's solid atm (7 PPG compared to Lukaku's 5.7) and after this week, we (United) have a tasty run but I'm still struggling to juggle the idea of 11 million or so on a player who won't get the armband. But, other than RvP is there really any other player worth owning from United attacking wise?

One could argue that you can cover Lukaku with Barkley

    Anyone got any thoughts?

For me it comes to the midfielders. If there aren't two big midfielders worth holding, I'd go Rooney. If I want two big midfielders, I'd go Remy/Lukaku/Benteke (I have very low TV). I went for Remy in my WC under the belief that Hazard will keep doing well and Walcott will come back soon, if not some other midfielder will step up.

Say you dont captain either Rooney or Lukaku in December.. Rooney continues averagin 7 points a game.. lukaku gets 5.5 ppg.. However, Lukaku will play all 7 games in December 4 of which are at home. Rooney will play probably 6 of his 7 games(3 of which are at home). That gives you 42 points from rooney and 38 points from Lukaku. Considerin The Jan WC can be activated Jan 1st and Rooney can be brought back in i'd say go lukaku and spend the 3 million on punts elsewhere

Why is Jonas Olsson never mentioned as a option from the West Brom defence? Contributes offensively, nice upcoming fixtures, and with the 4,9 price tag he seems to me as a good buy. Comments?

4 yellow cards and much less of a goal threat that McAuley and Ridgewell (and Ridgewell is only 0.2 more)

Since the start of the season, RVP has NET transfers of over - 600,000 yet his value has only dropped from 14.0 to 13.9..................and he'ss surely lose another 50-100k this week.

While i understand there is some rule freezing prices during/after a flag being applied, in this case it really looks silly.

Why is there a need for this "flag freezing price" rule??? Surely players can see a flag and act appropriately..................

RVP's true price range (IMO) should be somewhere around 12.0 to 12.5....................

Keep his price high, anyone stupid enough to have him in their team is only eating up money better spent elsewhere 🙂

There has to be some sort of restriction as there are so many injuries, and because of that the game would turn into some sort of monopoly game rather than FPL...They need to change it though because in his case it's just ridiculous that other owners of other players have been forced into quick sales due to a loss of TV. He should be about 12 mill by now...his actual worth IMO compared to the other big hitters.

He should be under 10m considering all these injury problems and Man Utd not looking any thing like title contenders.

Want to get Suarez in (I know, I'm late..), but I have to clear some funds in midfield to do so.

I currently have Özil, Oscar and Sessegnon (+Brady and Morrison)

    I see 2 options so far :
    A. Transfer one of my big hitters Özil/Oscar for Ramsey/Navas (which one?)
    B. Transfer Sessegnon for a bench fodder

    What do you think?
