The Digest – Gameweek 12

We take one last look at Gameweek 12 to hail the impact of Manuel Pellegrini on a certain Argentine. Palace’s recent resilience may be boosted by the arrival of Stoke’s former boss, whilst the captaincy issue in any given Gameweek seems to be whittled down to one of two South Americans:

The Player

Faced with the Premier League’s most resilient away defence last weekend, Sergio Aguero once again served up a huge Fantasy haul as City humiliated Spurs at the Etihad. While they’d put seven past Norwich in the previous home encounter, the visit of Andre Villas-Boas’ side seemed a different proposition, with Tottenham conceding a single goal on their travels prior to last Sunday.

The absence of David Silva made little difference to the hosts as Aguero tore apart the visitors’ backline, with a brace and assist in the 6-0 demolition helping him to 15 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points; his fifth set of double figures in 10 league starts.

Now up to 99 points for the campaign, Aguero’s prospects have been re-ignited by the arrival of both Pellegrini and Alvaro Negredo – a player his manager has described as “the perfect player for the Premier League”.

Incredibly, City have now scored more goals (26) at home than any side has managed in total and while their toils on the road may affect their title aspirations, Aguero’s form remains consistent, having produced the points in three of his four starts on the road. With 12 strikes and eight assists to his name already, the Argentine has already played a part in more goals than over the entire 2012/13 campaign under Roberto Mancini (12 goals, three assists) and with Pellegrini determined to go on the offensive, Aguero’s pivotal role in one of the most potent top-flight attacks we’ve seen for some time looks a gift-wrapped present for Fantasy managers as the season unfolds.

The Team

New boss Tony Pulis arrives at Palace in the perfect moment. Having leaked goals in each of their first 10 league matches, the Eagles’ ship has been steadied by caretaker boss Keith Millen, who has engineered back-to-back clean sheets against Everton and Hull, with a narrow win at the KC helping them climb off the foot of the table.

In his first match in charge, Pulis rolls up to injury-hit Norwich, with playmaker Robert Snodgrass and big-money forward Ricky Van Wolfswinkel both consigned to the treatment room . After that, it’s three matches in four at Selhurst Park (WHM, CAR, che, NEW) as Pulis looks to instill the resilience that helped the Potters to 30 clean sheets in the previous three seasons.

Certainly, judging by his time at the Britannia, we won’t be expecting a free-flowing brand of football – Pulis, essentially, is the anti-Pellegrini, and will be charged with no more than ensuring top-flight survival at whatever cost. If he can build on the defensive stability introduced by Millen, Pulis may yet bring Palace’s backline options into consideration – indeed, with a run of seven home games that reads (WHM, CAR, NEW, NOR, STO, HUL, WBA) he could hardly ask for a better chance to make Selhurst Park a fortress. With Julian Speroni at 4.5 in FPL and Danny Gabbidon, Joel Ward and Dean Moxey all just 4.0, there are budget options aplenty should the former Britannia boss make his mark.

The Talking Point

Aguero’s stunning haul against Tottenham kept Luis Suarez in the shade for once but the Uruguayan was also in the points, with a goal and assist in the Merseyside derby ensuring his incredible tally ticked over. While we saw a number of popular frontline options rack up the returns this week, with Romelu Lukaku, Olivier Giroud and Wayne Rooney all returning double figures, the explosive consistency of Suarez and Aguero is leaving the rest standing.

Since the Liverpool forward returned from suspension in Gameweek 6, the highest haul delivered from a Suarez-Aguero partnership over the subsequent seven fixtures has been (13, 7, 16, 17, 18, 16, 15) – right now, they are almost limiting the captaincy call down to just two players in any given Gameweek. Impressively, given that Aguero was sidelined for Gameweek 6, this means that he’s outscored Suarez in four of the six league fixtures he’s been available for since the Uruguayan’s return.

Indeed, despite the fact that Rooney has registered three sets of double figures in the last four (12, 12, 4, 11), it almost seems a gamble not to have the armband on either Suarez or Aguero at any point. The United frontman has averaged an impressive seven points per game this term, yet this still pales into insignificance against the South American duo – Suarez has managed 10.4, while Aguero has delivered nine ppg.

Whilst the likes of Lukaku, with seven goals and an assist in eight appearances for Everton, and Loic Remy, with eight strikes in nine starts for Newcastle, have more than delivered during their loan spells, no one can get near Suarez and Aguero right now. With Liverpool travelling to Hull this Sunday and Aguero welcoming Swansea to the Etihad, both look poised to deliver big time yet again – those managers bold enough to roll into the weekend without one or both in their front three face an uncomfortable couple of days.

    Should I sell Kolo or Barkley? I'm looking to get Aguero in, and I need to downgrade either Kolo or Barkley to do that. If I sell Kolo, then I have to play Barkley who isn't exactly nailed on. And if I sell Barkley, then I have to play Kolo who isn't nailed on either. And if Kolo doesn't play, I'll be doubled up on Southampton defenders vs Chelsea. (I already have Boruc)

    Who do I sell?

      I'd sell kolo between the two. Barkley looked good from the highlights I watched of the derby. I'd give him a little longer

    One last repost so I can potentially pull the trigger on these transfers.

    Migs
    Terry, Kosc, Coleman, (Burner) (Chester)
    Ozil, Hazard, Brady, Amalfitano, (Janujaz)
    Benteke, Suarez, Rooney

    2 FT, 1.2 banked.

    A) Rooney -> Aguero
    B) Ozil + Benteke -> Ravel + Aguero (with a hit next week to get rid of Coleman and Brady to Gabbidon + Walcott)
    C) Coleman + Ozil + Benteke -> Gabbidon + Walcott + Aguero (-4 hit)
    D) Don't bother with Aguero since he has 2 away games in a row after this GW and Rooney is more than an adequate alternative
    E) Something else?

    Thanks all!

        I have to say it's tempting me mate. Have thought of keeping Tekkers this week and if he blanks again, shift to Sturridge for a 2 GW punt and then maybe to Lukaku. So hard to resist Aguero, especially knowing that this week is probably around the 26-30 point mark as captain.

          If silva was around he would probably make adequate cover, but don't really fancy nasri/navas.

      Can you afford Ozil + Benteke -> Ramsey + Aguero? If no, I'd go A. I don't think B with Ravel is a good option, leaves your midfield too weak.

        I can afford that but don't really want Ramsey to be honest. I don't think his points will dry up too much but I just don't fancy him at that price anymore.

        With B, midfield would only be weak this week but would have another big hitter in there by GW 14.

      Having lived in Germany and attended matches over there, I have to say that their fans impresses me greatly. I was also at the City - Bayern game and the Bayern fans did not stop singing the whole game. Some fans weren't even watching the game but acting as a conductor to the crowd. Not sure about travelling all that way and not seeing any of the game but it was impressive nonetheless!

    Hi Fantasy-Consultants,

    I need some help with this lot:

    mignolet (5.6M), lewis (4.0M)
    mertesacker (5.5M), fonte (5.0M), williams (4.8M), yanga-mbiwa (4.4M), chester (3.9M)
    hazard (9.2M), lallana (6.5M), sessegnon (6.6M), morrison (4.7M), jedinak (4.3M)
    suarez (11.5M), rooney (11.0M), lukaku (7.8M)

    6.7M, 0FT

    What should my next two transfers be? I am prepared to entertain a points hit this week if I need to.

    I've been exploring:

    a) chester --> jt, jedinak --> coutinho
    b) chester --> g.johnson, jedinak --> walcott
    c) chester --> terry, lukaku --> aguero
    d) your suggestions are genuinely appreciated

    I know that loading up on aguero is the logical choice, but I can't help but feel it will leave me unbalanced long-term and he is likely due a rest in all this fixture congestion.

        I'd say before thinking about anything else you need to get Aguero this GW. I hate hits, and I have yet to take on this season, but I'd ditch Rooney or Lukaku for Aguero (c). Ditching Rooney leaves you open to getting Wally next GW, which could be a good idea.

      Rooney > Aguero instead of Lukaku. Even with United and Arsenal, he could get in on the points.

      Upgrading one of Sess/Jedinak would be priority as well. I think you can keep Chester.

      Ok, perhaps I have to face up to the fact that I do need Aguero.

      He does have quite a few away games coming up though... That's the thing that's putting me off.

      If I do lukaku --> aguero this week, then I still have sess --> walcott as an option next week, or lallana --> walcott (preferred) if lallana would just rise 0.1M before then.

        Not like he's not scoring away from home even though City are not playing their best football there. If they want to challenge for the title they need to sort out their away form, I don't see any reason why they won't be able to do that.

      He's got 3 CS in the last 3 he's played, that's nice. I think it's definitely related to the sudden changes in fixtures/form for popular defenders in Everton, Southampton and Tottenham, and of course Baines injury... wouldn't have gussed top of transfers though, that's pretty crazy really.

      It's definitely possible, you just need to either have a decent team value or weaken your defense. I have about 101M selling value and I didn't go through with it, felt it weakened my defense too much if I want Ramsey + 2 premium mids.

    Good day guys and girls.

    What are the chances Rat is fit for the weekend? And would he walk back into the squad, considering he took a while to get in in the first place?

    Other option is Rat > Terry for -4, which is also tempting, since I need a big hitter.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated!

    Rest of defence:

    RAT - McAuley - Flanagan - Clyne - Chester

      actually what I think I will do next week is
      Gerrard -> Lallana and Burner -> GJ

      and then the week after that do Ramsey -> Walcott and Januzaj -> Brady

      then the week after that (if prices have held which will be hard), do Lewis -> Marshall

      in the end will leave with me a team of:

      Migs, Marshall
      Clyne, Terry, Coleman, GJ, Rat
      Ravel, Hazard, Lallana, Brady, Walcott
