The Digest – Gameweek 16

Our last look at the Gameweek just gone includes Arsenal’s resurgent winger, the step up in performances from the Red half of Merseyside and the potential upturn in Fantasy prospects over at the Lane in light of Andre Villas-Boas’ dismissal.

The Player

It’s been a long time coming but finally, after 16 Gameweeks of the season, Theo Walcott is back in the Fantasy frame. While the main source of Fantasy discussion from Saturday’s nine-goal Etihad thriller centres around Sergio Aguero’s calf injury, the Gunners wide-man served notice that he’s set to offer us a timely differential prospect for our five-man midfields. Since recovering from abdominal surgery, Walcott had previously chipped in with a couple of assists over four brief sub appearances but his manager’s reluctance to hand him a first start since Gameweek 4 ensured most were happy to steer clear. Until now.

Walcott’s brace at the Emirates wasn’t enough to prevent his side slipping to a stunning 6-3 defeat but you have to put it in context – City had conceded just twice in the previous seven home games under Manuel Pellegrini. As Olivier Giroud continues to toil up top for the league leaders, with two strikes from open play in his last 10 league starts, Walcott’s eye for goal looks vital as Wenger looks to steady the ship – all the more so given that he’s set to welcome Chelsea to the Emirates next weekend.

With Aaron Ramsey finding a place in over 62% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) sides and fellow Gunner Mesut Ozil also fourth most popular midfielder with an ownership over 27%, Walcott – currently sitting in just 4% of sides – looks an ideal alternative to a template that has barely changed over the season.

Given that both Ramsey and Ozil chipped in with an assist apiece on Saturday, their owners will be happy to hold, allowing those Fantasy managers on the lookout for new blood to benefit from Walcott’s acquisition. After the Chelsea game, it’s West Ham, Newcastle, Cardiff, Villa and Fulham for Wenger’s side – a schedule that could well see the bandwagon pick up speed as Walcott looks to belatedly make a difference to our Fantasy campaigns and keep the Gunners on course for the title.

The Team

On Sunday afternoon, Liverpool rolled up to the Lane without their skipper on board for the first time this term. Sidelined for a number of weeks with a hamstring injury, many felt Steven Gerrard’s absence would see the Merseysiders struggle – he has, after all, created more goalscoring chances than any other midfielder in the Premier League so far. The collective lack of faith was summed up by our Captain’s Poll, where Luis Suarez was no more than fifth and, with a single clean sheet in their previous 12 league fixtures, Brendan Rodgers’ side were far from favourites in the eyes of many.

What transpired was a performance so ruthless it left Tottenham without a manager by this time yesterday after Daniel Levy handed Andre Villas-Boas his marching orders. A shift to 4-3-3 saw Joe Allen and Lucas provide a defensive shield in front of the back-four and not only delivered a rare clean sheet, but also allowed Jordan Henderson to forage forward through the middle in support of Suarez and help himself to a goal and assist in the 5-0 rout. At 5.9, Henderson’s new central role has attracted plenty new suitors already this week after his season-high haul of 13 points, while Raheem Sterling (4.9) has now started each of the last four and found the net twice.

With Philippe Coutinho and Sterling supplying pace and trickery out wide, neither Gerrard or Daniel Sturridge were missed as Suarez found the time and space to dismantle yet another top-flight backline and serve up his seventh set of double figures in just 11 appearances. Averaging 12.3 points per game, the Uruguayan has taken our Fantasy expectations to a new level this season –for all his consistency, Robin van Persie managed “only” 6.9 ppg for United last time around – a tally that looks positively paltry by comparison.

It’s fair to say that providing Gerrard was fit, he’d have played on Sunday but a stroke of fate has afforded Rodgers the opportunity to tinker. Perhaps by default, he seems to have struck upon a set-up that affords his side the balance at both ends of the pitch that he’s been striving all season to achieve. Upcoming trips to City and Chelsea will certainly test that theory but it’s becoming more than apparent that Liverpool, like Suarez, are a different prospect altogether this season.

The Talking Point

The dismissal of Villas-Boas, just one day after Steve Clarke’s departure from West Brom, takes the number of clubs to have changed manager already this season to five. Palace, Fulham and Sunderland have, to differing degrees, all benefitted from their decisions to pull the plug on previous managers. Tony Pulis has made a real difference to the Eagles’ defence and has brought the likes of Julian Speroni, Joel Ward , Barry Bannan and even Marouane Chamakh onto our radars. Rene Meulensteen has reignited Dimitar Berbatov as a Fantasy force, whilst Sunderland have defeated Newcastle and City at the Stadium of Light and registered three clean sheets in the last six under Gus Poyet.

Whilst a trip to Southampton this weekend is by no means easy, the following four Gameweeks hand Tottenham the chance to bounce back from Sunday’s mauling. West Brom, Stoke and Palace all roll up to the Lane over that period and hint at a reason for optimism, allowing some of their main protagonists the chance to stake a claim for our consideration once again.

There’s no denying Tottenham toiled in attack but, despite their failings, still managed more shots than any other side in the Premier League in the first 16 Gameweeks. One look at the stats of a trio of their summer signings shows that the club aren’t lacking in firepower– Roberto Soldado scored 59 league goals in three seasons at Valencia, Erik Lamela managed 15 goals and five assists for Roma last year, whilst Christian Eriksen produced 17 goals and 36 assists in his final two seasons at Ajax. A bloated first-team squad led to continual tinkering from Villas-Boas and ultimately ensured that his numerous new acquisitions never had the opportunity to settle as first-team regulars – consistency of selection looks vital of Spurs are to improve.

At the back, it’s easy to forget that Spurs started the season with seven clean sheets in the first 11 matches, conceding just six goals over that period. The floodgates opened at City back in Gameweek 12 in a 6-0 defeat that Villas-Boas failed to properly recover from. With the Portuguese boss now banished, the slate can be wiped clean and potentially reignite our Fantasy interest in Tottenham’s potential as they look to regroup after Sunday’s humiliation at home.

I really need the differential, just one goal or an assist would be considered a poor week for Suarez.

You gotta break down the best and worst case scenarios of going Rooney (C) over Suarez (C), then.

      Best case scenario:
Suarez gets a goal, Rooney gets two goals. You're 4-5 points up.

      Worst case scenario:
      GW16

Not Ozil imo. He's the creator, he's on the set pieces, he also doesn't run about very much because that's just not his style. Already from what we've seen it's usually Wilshere or Cazorla (didn't even come off the bench against City).

so all this being said, is Terry + Ravel/Januzaj -> Evans + Walcott for a -8 overkill? should I wait until next GW to do it for a -4? I'm not really worried that Wally will rise (monitoring)..just can't take another Terry blank..

also would you do it for Ravel or Januzaj..with RVP out and Young being terrible, I think I might do it for Ravel..could see Janu popping in with an assist or goal regularly if United hit stride.

The Terry > Evans move can't get you a real profit even in the best case scenario of Terry blanking and Evans getting a CS. It would only get you a profit if Evans does something special like scoring - add to that the risk of Terry scoring from a set piece against Arsenal (beastly) and you should keep him this week imo.

As Mr Smith says below the Terry > Evans swap could work as a free trade in the best case scenario of No CS > CS (-4) So it might be worth it for the sake of your team.

if price changes force my hand, is it crazy to consider:
Ramsey -> Walcott for -4 this week
Terry + Ravel -> Evans (or other) + Ramsey for -4 to get him back in?

I just don't want to miss the boat on Wally price rises and Ramsey should stay steady (also want to ship Terry asap)

I'm too lazy right now to work out how much money I lose (if any) other than seeming silly

You'll probably lose much more money on buying Ramsey back than you gain from Wally's rises. Especially as you only get half of Wally's rises. Not gonna lie that sounds nuts

And OK, it does mean you buy Walcott for cheaper too, but unless you bought Ramsey like only a month ago I can't see how you'd make a profit.

you sell at the price you bought at (plus or minus the changes that came along the way). I brought Ramsey back in recently (a few GWs ago?) and would lose 0.2m doing it.

                        I have 3.2m. Ramsey (7.4 selling) -> Walcott (9.1 buying) leaves me with 1.5.

                        Next week I do Terry (6.5 selling) + Ravel (4.9 selling) -> Evans (5 buying) + Ramsey (7.6 buying).

so basically the question is..is losing 0.2m worth spreading out a -8 over two weeks? especially if it means shipping an expensive defender who I seem to be relying on SOLELY for goals because his club can't keep CS and getting in an explosive midfielder who is a proven performer and fresh?

                        hmm

0.2m for -8 is almost certainly not worth it. Just reduce it to the points and take the players out of it - I think your original plan of Terry & Ravel > Evans & Walcott (-8) makes more sense. Get the Evans transfer out of the way, potentially for free.

and on top of it all..I may choose to just NOT bring Ramsey back in..I mean yeah he's performing well, but I feel over the course of the season Walcott and Ozil will outscore him and that money could be better used to try and bring Rooney/Agueo back in at the wildcard

The way I see it is Giroud is desperately out of form and clearly in need of a rest. Wally just banged in 2 goals vs. City so he could well prove to be the primary source of success for Arsenal over the Xmas break at the very least.

so all this being said, is Terry + Ravel/Januzaj -> Evans + Walcott for a -8 overkill? should I wait until next GW to do it for a -4? I'm not really worried that Wally will rise (monitoring)..just can't take another Terry blank..

Not keen on a hit for a defender as it rarely pays off so if you can wait I would. That said I took Terry out for Zabs this week for a hit as I can't see a cleanie for Chelsea this weekend and do for City so am thinking of it more like a free trade.

My team after transfers this week will look like this

    Mignolet / Lewis
Wilson / Ward OR Evans / Distin / Clyne / Burner
    Özil / Hazard / Ramsey / Walcott / Ward-Prowse
    Suárez / Lukaku / Negredo

Good enough to keep pace with his team and get me through to the JAN WC?

Yeah the top 8 is the 8 to have the back can rotate depending on fixtures... Zab/Terry with Coleman and some cheapies that can be rotated for fixtures is the way to go

a front 8 like that with 2 decent big hitters at the back and cheapy defs to rotate has been the formula to success!

    Bemba's differential picks pt 2

People remember bemba pick pt 1 identified cabaye as the "bemba pick". This was in gw 10 pick going forwards.

In the 2nd installment I look at differential option within midfield and forward positions

    Midfield

Mirallas - 5% Ownership - Delefoue injured and out of the christmas period means that Mirallas is almost certain of starting games over christmas. He has something to prove to the team and the manager and will look to put in good performances as his place is at stake within the team

Sterling - 2.9% ownership - Excellent display v spurs. This performance means he starts v cardiff and probably going forward for the next few games. At 4.9m he offers better value than Morrison in my opinion as Liverpool are a more attacking side.

Pienaar - 1.9% ownership - Pienaar has for many years been a solid fantasy pick. With alternatives such as sessegnon at the same price, Pienaar looks a good choice in the price bracket of 6-7.5m mids. He got 2 assists in the last game v Fulham and with tasty fixtures to come is an alternative to mirallas

    Bemba's differential pick
Valencia - 1.1% ownership - This for me looks the pick of the bunch. 7.1m united midfielder who is just beginning to hit form. United for me have found a certain style last couple of weeks where they are using the flanks to do the majority of the attacking. Valencia impressed me v Villa and showed signs of his form from a couple of seasons ago. Rafael coming back to the side is key for me as it does not mean valencia will play rb but instead be given the role of going forward and crossing whenever possible to welbeck/rooney/hernandez.

However: they're playing Norwich and Hull away, and they both concede very little at home, Hull in particular is a fortress (3 goals conceded in 8 home matches), but Norwich, too, has recent good record at home (2 goals conceded in last 4 home matches).

And, this gets funny: they play Spurs and Hammers away, and these two just happen to be are two of the least conceding away teams, both averaging about 1 conceded goal per away game (9 in 8).

And this despite Spurs conceding 6 at Etihad, in the other 7 away games they have only conceded a combined 3. They have some defence injuries right now, but if the interim manager won't play a high defence line he did at Etihad but a lower one like against United, then it could be a low scoring match.

Hammers also conceded 4 at Liverpool. In the other 7 away games they have conceded combined 5 goals.

Okay, both have potential to concede heavily, but it has been only against very talented attacks like Liverpool and City. ManU tends to go more to the general opponent category and that could well read very low scoring.

          You were warned.
