Spot the Differential – Gameweek 17

As the minutes tick down until the Gameweek 17 deadline, we scour the market for some overlooked alternatives for your consideration. This week we bring you a couple of budget midfielders and turn to Old Trafford for our final selection as doubts continue to hover over a certain England international:

Raheem Sterling

An injury to Daniel Sturridge prior to the Gameweek 13 trip to Hull has handed the youngster a first-team opportunity. Whilst Luis Suarez has hogged the headlines with a succession of dazzling displays, Sterling has quietly gone about his business on the flank – a goal in Sunday’s thrashing of Tottenham was his second strike in four appearances for the in-form Merseysiders.

Jordan Henderson’s goal and assist in the 5-0 win over Spurs has again kept Sterling in the shade. The former has earned over 52,000 new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners this week as Brendan Rodgers’ side prepare to welcome Cardiff to Anfield – double the number of Fantasy managers who have acquired Sterling, despite the winger being available for a mere 4.9 in FPL.

Coming in at 4.8 in the Sky Sports game and 2.5 in the Sun Dream Team, Sterling certainly looks a guaranteed starter until Sturridge is back in the frame after his ankle injury. Whilst upcoming trips to City and Chelsea understandably dent his appeal, a New Year’s Day home clash with Hull and subsequent trip to Stoke offer a chance to get amongst the points again as Rodgers looks to keep his side’s title bid on track.

Ki Sung-Yeung

A change of position brings the Sunderland midfielder onto this week’s radar. Gus Poyet’s decision to draft in Lee Cattermole in front of the back-four allowed the former Celtic star to move into a more advanced berth and fire numerous efforts on goal against West Ham last weekend. Whilst he failed to find the net in the draw with Sam Allardyce’s side, Ki’s eye for goal was more than apparent after he bagged the midweek cup winner over Chelsea.

As we reported in this week’s Say What? article, Poyet is keen for the Korean to join in the Black Cats’ attacking moves as he plots to steer his side to safety. This weekend’s visit of Norwich is the start of a highly favourable run of home games from here until the end of the season and certainly bodes well for the Wearsiders, who have won four out of six in front of their own fans in all competitions under the new man in charge.

Priced at a mere 4.8 in both FPL and the Sky Sports game and 1.5 in the Sun Dream Team, Ki is one to consider not only for the short-term but also for our winter wildcards, for those eyeing up a cut-price fifth midfielder.

Danny Welbeck

With Wayne Rooney’s groin injury situation no closer to being solved thanks to yet another vague press conference from his manager, we’re opting for his fellow United forward for the home clash against West Ham. Handed his chance up top against Villa last weekend, Welbeck made a more than persuasive case for his continued inclusion as the champions’ lone frontman by bagging a brace to suggest that, regardless of Rooney’s availability, he may still be set to lead the line.

Despite a strong showing last weekend, Welbeck’s acquisition still carries a degree of risk, though. For all we know, Rooney is raring to go against the Hammers and, with Shinji Kagawa available, Welbeck could be forced onto the flank or even the bench, giving his manager’s propensity for tinkering. However, if Rooney is indeed forced out of the festive period, Welbeck could well be poised to take advantage – coming in at 7.0 in FPL, 7.7 in the Sky Sports game and 3.0 in the Sun Dream Team, he also has upcoming clashes with Hull and Norwich over the next week to boost his appeal for those willing to gamble.

fair enough, but it's not like I'm going to swap out my whole team every week is it?

did Terry + Januzaj > Chester + Walcott..was considering both Ward and Evans, but went for the cheapest of the 3 in a bid to bring in Rooney down the line or Aguero back in without much fuss..

I feel people here often don't differentiate between quality of a team and quality of a team for that specific week. I think my defense is good, especially since they come with:
        Howard - Lewis
        Hazard - Silva - Walcott - Ramsey - Ravel
        Suarez - Lukaku - Negredo

and honestly for United, the only REALLY nailed on players are Rooney, RVP and maybe Evra (though Buttner could step in over the next 3) everyone else has the potential to be rotated.

definitely, both Fergie and Moyes have been known to tighten up during and after the festive periods..but why Jones? won't get on the scoresheet too, too much so is likely only good for 3 points (+ baps potentially in a dull affair)..

          I agree completely.
I used the wildcard in gw3 to go for big hitters in defence, but have since been slowly reverting to the cheapo variety. I now have Chester, Burner and Ward, but a similar front 8 as you. The promoted teams have been getting clean sheets. If things change before january then there is the wildcard to sort it out.

    sooo confused:

    A: boruc >> howard.....leaves me with 0.2m so next gw coutinho + dawson >> wally + xxx (-4)
B: boruc >> guzan...allows coutinho >> wally for free next gw
    C: boruc >> speroni/mannone...allows coutinho + nasri >> wally + silva (-4)

the incoming gk will have to play every gw till gw23...howard is the safe option but will need to take a hit next week...if i go C, can get the super midfield esp if nasri doesnt perform this gw.

assuming i go C, who to choose btw speroni/mannone

Your other keeper is Myhill... not confident of a start this week? You could also sit on it, play Myhill and re-assess next week.
But if must, I would go with A. Myhill will lose his place to Foster soon (hopefully not this week!), so you will needa playable keeper to get to january. The sexy midfield might look nice but Speroni/Guzan/Mannone are not viable without a rotating partner. It will cost you another hit to replace Myhill.

i am sure myhill wont start this gw hence need to bring in a keeper...

agree that the ideal scenario is to have a rotating keeper if going for a cheapie but sland have a good run till jan WC...only toughie being away to eve.

hmmm, need to think about this

RMT actually says to play Myhill. (Notice the b next to Marshall's name.) But it does show a lower predicted score for Myhill, presumably due to the chance of him not starting.
So RMT has it completely right. Assuming Myhill starts, he is the better option.

I have 2 premium defenders: Terry (buy at 6.0) and Walker
Are both of them good enough to be kept until Jan Wildcard?
Or should I sell one or both of them with Coleman, Evra, Mertesacker, Kompany or Johnson?
    Advise, pls.....

    # my other 3 defs are the pretty cheapy ones: ward, chester and benturner

I have a feeling Ward is going to be a must have in the defence for FPL in the coming weeks and months ahead 😉

I'd get rid of Terry (I also have him) as Chelsea are very dodgy at the back these days. It's also good in my experience to have a few defenders from poorer teams as they seem to do more defending... and thus pick up more points!

      my subjective opinion ===> Ozil
my defense: Perhaps walcott is a better goalscorer, but he is lack of potential to get bonus (please see his statistic). Ozil is more consistent and BPS darling, although he could not deliver heavy point in one game....

Good of you to consider Yaya... he's underrated on these parts.
I can see how both of them could do well, but I also wouldn't be too surprised to see either of them disappoint. I just don't know where the points will come from in the City midfield, especially when you throw in Nasri. I'm happy with just Negredo for now.

Depends how bad your team is come jan 1st, if its in desperate need of repair use it right away, teams like pool, Ars and Eve have good fixtures in Jan so you could actually make up a few points in the month of Jan.
However if you are content with your team, I'd wait till near the end when most transfers and loans are sorted out.
