PlayON Player Picks – Gameweek 20

The Player Picks for our weekly Fantasy Football game are brought to you this Tuesday lunchtime as we prepare for 10 fixtures over New Year’s Day. With prime home games for Arsenal and Liverpool against Cardiff and Hull respectively, Theo Walcott and Luis Suarez are on our radars. We scour the PlayON Player Price List for potential bargains in order to save cash for our premium priced pair:

If you’re new to PlayON, read this season’s introduction article for more information. If you’re already a PlayON player, read on for our selection of this week’s targets…

Goalkeeper – David Stockdale
Yes, he may have conceded six goals away to Hull but the Fulham stopper will set you back a mere 6.6m for a home game against West Ham. With Maarten Stekelenburg still sidelined through injury, Stockdale will face a Hammers side with just two goals in their last three road trips and enables us to free up funds to be spent elsewhere. Coming in at 6.2m, Stoke’s Tomas Sorenson is even easier on the budget if you reckon he can keep Everton at bay at the Britannia but if but if you’re willing to splash the cash, Joe Hart is still relatively inexpensive at 8.7m as City roll up to Swansea.

Defence – Leighton Baines
Having recovered from a toe injury, the Everton defender ousted Bryan Oviedo from the left-back berth at home to Southampton last weekend. Baines will set you back a bargain 7.3m for the Toffees visit to injury-hit Stoke on Wednesday – given that Seamus Coleman is 11.5m, Baines’ value catches the eye, with set-pieces and spot-kicks bolstering his appeal at the Britannia. Daniel Agger looks the likeliest to benefit from Mamadou Sakho’s hamstring problem and comes in at just 8.0m for Liverpool’s home encounter against a Hull side that have scored twice in their last three on the road. With Wes Brown suspended and John O’Shea likely to miss out again with a shoulder complaint, Sunderland’s Samba Diakite (8.5m) affords us a kindly-priced route into a defence with three clean sheets in the last four fixtures – the Black Cats entertain an Aston Villa side that have only scored twice in the previous five league matches.

Midfield – Santi Cazorla
With Mesut Ozil sidelined due to a shoulder complaint, the little Spaniard seems poised for a third consecutive start as Arsenal welcome Cardiff to the Emirates. If you don’t have the budget for 10.2m priced Walcott (who is set for a late fitness test) or even if you fancy loading up on the league leaders, Cazorla comes in at 8.7m for tomorrow’s showdown, with his eye for a long range effort benefitting from the PlayON scoring matrix. If you’re on the lookout for a punt, Steve Gerrard could return from a hamstring problem against Hull, according to Brendan Rodgers and is available for 8.6m, whilst Manchester United’s Michael Carrick is, like Stockdale, another budget “enabler”. Priced at 6.6m, Carrick’s tackles and interceptions will keep his tally ticking over and helps save the pennies ahead of a home clash with former club Spurs.

Forward – Steven Fletcher
The catalyst for Sunderland’s late comeback draw at Cardiff last weekend, Fletcher is expected to return to the starting XI for a vital home game with Villa. Bearing in mind the visitors have injury and suspension concerns in defence ahead of their trip to the Stadium of Light, the Black Cats frontman – who comes in at 10.6m – will be confident of breaching a backline that has conceded twice in each of their last four road trips. Palace’s Marouane Chamakh is also listed in the sub 11.0m price bracket this week. The 10.8m priced Moroccan welcomes Norwich to Selhurst Park and has scored in two of his last three home appearances, whilst Arsenal’s Lukas Podolski looks a real option after Olivier Giroud was ruled out earlier this morning. With a number of doubts in midfield, though, the German could still be fielded on the left flank but at a mere 8.9m, he has the potential to pay off considerably.

How To Play

PlayON is weekly Fantasy Football for free or for cash, so you can dip in and out of playing throughout the season. Once your starting XI is built (you can keep changing your team right up to two hours before the first kick-off – 10.45 on New Year’s Day), you can compete for cash. Entering a multiplayer game for a set stake, you’ll have a chance of winning your share of the pot should you finish high enough in the rankings.

Similarly, you can challenge other players to one-on-one games, selecting the amount at stake. The likes of Robbie Fowler, Les Ferdinand and OptaJoe are all playing the game and are there to be challenged for free or for £1. The Fantasy Football Scout team is also available to be challenged and has a 53% win rate up to this point.

New Year’s Day Bounty – £25 FREE

PlayON has a special bounty offer in place for the New Year’s Day games. One person who beats OptaJoe in a £1 one-on-one game will win £25 of free credit so challenge OptaJoe now to be in with a chance of winning the free £25.

The Fantasy Football Scout Game

We’ve also got a £2 multiplayer game, dedicated to our community, which is now open and the prize pot is building.

Challenge Your Mates

You can also set up your own multiplayer games with your mates to play for bragging rights only or for cash. Create your own game at www.playon.co.uk.

Finally, a reminder that we have published a strategy guide, offering some tips for getting the most from your PlayON lineup, right here.

You have to be over 18 to enter cash games at PlayON. If you do wager some cash, please remember to gamble responsibly. PlayON is licensed and regulated by the UK Gambling Commission.

Reckon so. If Rooney has been carrying a slight knock, it would make sense for Moyes to leave him out at Norwich to make sure he's fit for the bigger game against Spurs.

          Hi Jas5sk,
The player values change each week based on our algorithm.
This week, Suarez and Lukaku are the most expensive players at 12.2m, followed by Rooney at 12.1m and Negredo at 12.0m

Something not right about RavMo - too much smoke about disciplinary issues and a possible transfer. BFS not one to swallow pride (eats most other things though) so think he will not start even if fit - they scored 3 last time out without him.

Not a huge fan of either option - I'd sit tight on Silva if you can unless you anticipate real issues with getting XI out.

Barkely is a better option of the two.

Silva doesn't have great fixtures (other than GW22) before the wildcard window closes, and misses this week obviously. Pick the right replacement and you can pick up more points maybe and only use the one FT if you bring him in with your WC in time for his better fixtures.

I bought Ramsey at 5.9. With Wenger saying he is 2-3 weeks away now i reckon its 50-50 whether it is worth selling him or not.

Is it worth taking a punt of Sterling for a few weeks before Sturridge is back properly. then i can sort this whole mess out with a jan wildcard.

Agreed this is definitely the best combo.

The only uncertainty is whether Westwood's return threatens Mannone's starts and whether a change in manager sends Cardiff on the slide.

At the moment this is 100% my WC keepers though.

          Mine too..
Just spend a lot of time in the ticker and can't really find a better rotation pair.

Hull and CPL is another one, but I plan to use it in the defense, as i already have Gabbidon and Chester on fair price..

I agree - as you can see above I intend to go with it.

I'm just raising what I see as the issues to consider and one of your rotating keepers coming under threat for their place is a consideration imo.

Yep, and you're not the first to point out the Westwood threat, I just don't think it's a real concern with them at the same price is all. Think I'll be going with that rotation too, hard to ignore with those fixtures.

Need to bench 1 of these. Sterling Adabeyor or Terry. Im leaning towards Terry coz I think Southampton score at home though chelsea are capable of kerping it tight just like they did at arsenal. Adabeyor has looked good and will attack a poor united team imo. Any thoughts? Cheers

I'd bench Terry as well as I think Southampton are likely to score.

Then again unless you are very lucky it's highly likely that you are going to need your first sub this GW given unexpected rotation so I wouldn't sweat it too much.

Halfway through the FPL season and an update on where the Bonus points have gone:

          Total Games: 190
Total Bonus Pts: 1373 (Av 7.2 per game)

          Goalkeepers 78 (5.7%)
          Defenders 481 (35.0%)
          Midfielders 444 (32.3%)
          Forwards 370 (26.9%)

The spread of points is extremely even, but overall, IMO, the system is very disappointing. In 0-0 games, invariably, you have 2, 3 or even 4 defenders/GK all picking up the maximum 3 points. This seems to me like being part of a defence that keeps a clean sheet will more than likely ensure you bonus points, and this is nonsense really. There are already 4 points for that.

I think there is way too much weight on Clean Sheets and Assists/Goals in relation to the Bonus system, especially given that these genereate points anyway.

Perhaps there should be a diffrenciation in regards to Bonus between a goal scored from outside the box as opposed to one from (for example) a penalty and/or a goal from inside the box ?

Also, with regard to Bonus, perhaps there shopuld be a judgement call between a "key" assist" an an "inadvertant assist".

Penalising for "shots off target" should be looked at......missing an open goal from 10 yards is NOT the same as clipping the crossbar from 30 yards.

          Thoughts??

There is data available for this, but in the main it's often left best to a human to decide who are deserving of bonus points.

It's clear that the very low scoring games are destroying the integrity of the bonus system. Awarding 15 to 20 bonus points when normally it would be 7 is just wrong.

You can argue that if defenders are already being awarded for cleanies, then goals shouldn't be awarded neither.

I love the new bonus system!

It is an objective measure of a player's performance.

              The BPS system a meritocracy.
If one player earns the same number of BPS as another then shouldn't they be awarded the same number of bonus points?

              Straight forward & simple.

While it may not be perfect is superior to any of the subjective systems of the past.

We simply need to adapt. That's it. That's all.

All very good points. Very fed up of almost an entire backline picking up 3 bonus.

Good points on the key assists and shots as well.

Have a +1 for the analysis, but I sort of disagree with your other thoughts.

Its good that compared to last season defenders and GKs can get some points. The fact they are related mostly to clean sheets isn't perfect, because things get very variable and spiky (clean sheet can be worth 6 or 7 points in some games), but its better than last year.

I also don't see the problem with clean sheets for goals/assists these things win games of football.

What I think you are getting at generally, is bonus points based on contribution to the game, not inflexible stats, which is a nice goal, but very hard to implement fairly.

I think the system is good and predictable and a huge improvement on anything we've had previously.

I do think however that the main problem has been that lots of players can get bonus points in one match (although the average of 7.2 bonus points per match is only 1.2 above the 6 points you would expect if only 3 players got bonus each game (3+2+1) which may suggest it isn't quite the problem I think it is).

All that's needed in my opinion is a slight increase in the resolution of the BPS, so fewer players are left with the same scores and therefore same bonus at the end of a match. Your ideas would certainly help this. Your shooting off target one could maybe involve awarding or removing BPS when 'big chances' are missed by strikers or saved by goalies/defenders - these are much more significant than say a shot being saved from a sterile chance way outside of the box (Opta already quantifies chances as big or not as well).

I think the award of assists needs to be looked at also. My idea, an award of 1 point for the assister of the assister if it is from a corner, free-kick or cross (all of which will be outside of the box).

Also, if a player 'dummies' it intentionally and this leads to a goal, this should be awarded an assist, at present, a sweet dummy creates the chance but gets no reward - bit wrong in my opinion!

GKs BPS needs to be looked at as well, to many MOTM performances go unrecognised in the BPS system!

The 3 essential midfielders to have until end of season?

          Walcott, Hazard & Silva ?

I don't know about the end of the season, but I'd say Walcott and Hazard are essential right now, and that Yaya/Silva is very handy as well

I've been thinking this - Silva seems essential but injuries have been very annoying.

Personally I see Walcott and Hazard as essential and am considering ignoring City and getting Cabaye and Lallana as 3rd and 4th midfield with Aguero back hopefully with a late Jan WC.

if silva drops to 9.3 tonight i may as well sell him for 1 week

rest of squad is fine so can buy him straight back after this gw.

I think it is a risk worth taking.

            unless you're wildcarding i wouldn't

you never know what might happen to tomorrow. To plan to spend 2 precious FTs on getting a player out and in, for the sake of 0.1 is silly IMO

I paid 9.1 for Silva, his drop won't affect me.

I noticed a few on here are now considering Puncheon, just wondered why now? Is he playing a more advanced role? He hasn't done much all season.

I saw Anchorman 2 the other day, was a bit disappointed. Same old jokes but everyone looking old.

          Some poor cameos as well.

I thought the cameos were the best part. Film was quite shitty though, Will Ferrell just isn't as funny as he thinks he is

I agree. It was semi-decent but nothing exceptional.
