The Community Round Up

With the first Wildcards of January being fluttered, the community was abuzz with advice on the best picks, rotation pairings and formations for our newly-assembled teams. Elsewhere this week, the community attempted to decipher the secrets of some of the most consistent Fantasy managers around – is it skill or pure luck at work? We revisit this and other discussions, before calling in on the progress of a variety of tournaments taking place within the FFS community.

The Hottest Topics

With the January Wildcard available this week, there was a flurry of hot topics looking at the various strategies and key acquisitions available. Triggerlips’s post was one of the week’s most popular and contains some valuable advice such as anticipating price falls and delaying the Wildcard to the final Gameweek. Despite such advice, some Fantasy managers simply could not wait to start tinkering with their sides. Kingston and Wakey were amongst the early Wildcarders to make themselves known during our discussion.

Good on Zidane’s Floor was also on hand to offer valuable input on some of the potential January wildcard bargains. This includes those who are set to return from injury, with Southampton’s goalkeeper Artur Boruc and Liverpool’s left back Jose Enrique amongst the array of names offered up. Meanwhile, GK was busy researching wildcard formations and has supplied a list of some of the key bargains to earmark during the January sales.

The “ubers”, a term used to describe those who favour a very cheap defence, were also out in force this week in an attempt to convince Fantasy managers of the benefits of rotating a budget backline. In Koflok’s guide to cheap defensive rotation he also takes into account the need to include at least one premium defender, with Everton’s Seamus Coleman the pick of the bunch. Around Coleman he recommends rotating defenders from, among others, Hull, Stoke and Newcastle.

Another of our most popular wildcard posts during the last week was this epic guide to defender and goalkeeper rotations from Innsie.

Elsewhere, Granville had his say, stating that the Wildcard could prove the perfect time to ditch this season’s favoured 3-4-3 formation and opt instead for a 3-5-2 line-up with a cheap striker. Among the budget forward options he’s considering are Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez and Norwich’s Gary Hooper.

Gargamel’s Gargatron, the tool which helps Fantasy managers analyse their captaincy and bench decision, has been widely used among the community. He returned with a post this week to tell us of some updates, including the ability to show how far away from a particular rank you are in terms of points. Depressing reading for some – Mark should certainly steer clear.

Meanwhile, Lee AFC spotted that certain managers, such as our live Hall of Fame leader Evs and last year’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) winner Spiderm4tt, seem to be achieving an incredible level of consistency. He asked whether they are just lucky or among the most skilful FPL players around. Luck vs Skill – an age old debate and a definite can of worms.

The Community Tournaments

FFS UEFA’s league competitions have ended. Last week we had just enough time to reveal that our moderator Evs had scooped the English Premier League crown. The full list of winners also include rest of Europe winner Djerbil, Ligue 1 champion GoonerByron and Bundesliga victor Billy Ketsu. In addition, two other members of the Fantasy Football Scout team emerged victorious, with our resident physio expert Facer scooping the Serie A crown and moderator Athletico Timbo taking the title of La Liga winner. The FFS UEFA Council has also revealed that it has no plans for any further league competitions but instead will concentrate on tournaments such as its Beach Soccer World Cup.

Those topping In Tommy We Trust’s All Things leagues are Evs, Bootsy, Athletico Timbo, Billy Ketsu, Jambo17 and Koneheads.

Thomass‘ Big Bash League Tournament has now reached the knockout stage. In Gameweek 22 the semi-finals will take place where Evs and fellow moderator Torres Magic‘s Sydney Sixers take on our Sky game expert D1sable and BlueLion, aka Perth Scorchers. The other semi-final will feature Thomass and Giggs Boson‘s Sydney Thunder against Melbourne Stars, the team name of Pleased to Michu and Rohan.

In Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing competition 35 managers left, with 271 remaining. Blue Teets leads his After Xmas League. His Millionaire Club & January Wildcard League start in GW21. Codes to all TM’s leagues can be found here.

Considering doing the Wildcard if Rooney and Wally are out. Why wait:
    - We know most of the players we want
    - Prices will rise
    - Cash can be kept in reserve for Aguero
    - Lots of hits this week
    - Nice options with Spurs and Southampton
    - New arrivals will need to start playing before deciding to get them
    - You still have transfers to get in any players that become 'essential'

Seems the late Wildcard is only useful if you completely change your mind over the next 3 weeks.

No massive issues. Want to go to rotating keepers (Marshall/Manone) both are rising. Want Navas out for Silva. Want Rooney out, will get Ade or Negrado in the meantime. Want Cabaye out. Will get Sagna for the next few weeks.

Look I'm all for catching rises / falls etc but that's a fab team and Shez may out score those rotators ,
Wally looks a prob and I think Rooney will play so start with Wally and get Silva / Ozil and work your way through it , heck Navas could be top scores this gw !
, take the Wc as a bonus at end of month that's just my opinion ,
                  Besta luck regardless.

u will use it anyway so whats the point/benefit of waiting? i cant see much to be honest. saving a transfer the following week covers the last minute transfers people are talking about. plus those transfers will have to adapt, not many would walk straight away into any team unless they are of the highest class

That's your opinion and your entitled to it ,
But if like most on here that your team is already in good shape and at least 1ft why not wait ?
I personally will bring back 8/9 of my current squad - so I don't see the panic ,
But if I had 4/5 + fixes I would Wc.

Of course. Whether the saved transfers can cater for the complete change of mind is not certain, however. I've always gone for an early JWC in the past - mostly because the team I wanted hasn't changed over January and I wanted to get it at it's cheapest cost, which is one of the points you mention. But a couple of injuries does kill this strategy so I understand people who want to wait.

Assuming you don't have major issues in your team, is it better to WC in gw23 or 24? If so, would be good to get the thinking behind it...

Some of the factors i am considering:
    - potential for a fixture swing occurs and play it accordingly...
    - 10 day vs 3 day break
    - good fixtures of a few teams in gw23 so WC prior to that to take advantage or take some punts in gw23 and WC for gw24
    - deadline day transfers but i dont think this is a major issue as i would want to wait and see impact of deadline transfers
    - announcement of dgw's, not sure when we will find this out by...also the dgw will happen from gw27 onwards so plenty of time to plan for that post WC

    anything i might have missed?

I prefer WC in a longer period, not necessarily to increase TV, but just to have more time on my hands to get more injury info etc. I don't like to be "rushed" into a WC in 3 days. It's bad enough to make up my mind.

The return of Kun and news on Boruc/Walc/Rvp/Rooney etc will determine when I(and most I suppose) WC.

I doubt the DGW news comes into play so early, but I might be wrong.

There is def a fixt swing in GW 22/23.

fixture swing for which teams tough? which teams in your opinion have nice fixtures week 23 onwards? u can always use their players in a wildcard team even if u do so today. a couple of gameweeks shoudlnt influence too much who u r taking

        thats my opinion anyway

Best midfielder for 9.8m or under?
    Walcott a big blow..
Eriksen, Bannan, Mutch, Toure my mids
    Rooney, Lukaku, Suarez my attack
    0.5m in account.

If Rooney is confirmed out is it worth a hit to bring in a replacement for him too?
    That's the conundrum..
Think I ll do it as I've had a few good weeks and can afford the little gamble of a points hit..

    Ozil or Cazorla?

    Cazorla - 9.5m, 2.3% ownership
    Pros:
    - Differential
    - Good form
    - 90 minutes in last 3 gameweeks
    - Cheaper than Ozil
    - More goal attempts

    Cons:
    - If money is tight, won't allow transfer up to Walcott or Ozil
    - When both him and Ozil on the field, Wenger more likely to sub Cazorla
    - Ozil scored more points and performed better fantasy wise in GWs 13-15 when they both played together.

    Ozil, 9.9m, 17.1% ownership
    Pros:
    - 4 goals, 8 assists, 15 bonus points
    - Played more minutes and less likely to get subbed
    - Higher assist potential, more penalty area and field touches
    - When both Ozil and Cazorla were on field together GWs 13-15, Ozil scored more
    - Pricier which allows easy trade downs to Walcott when fit again or Cazorla if form continues

    Cons:
    - More expensive
    - Less of a differential
    - Fewer goal attempts
    - Just returning from injury so fitness could be concern (could also be a pro considering he's been resting during the hectic Christmas period)

    Conclusion:
Honestly, it's hard to say who's the better pick. My gut feeling is that Ozil is the better pick right now, because he gives the option to downgrade to either Walcott or Cazorla as needed and has proven very reliable. Just look back when he was dropping in price and being sold en masse only to get 3 double figure returns in a row.

Cazorla is better for flair and if you fancy taking a risk and handing him the armband, but honestly, Suarez owns that right now for me, so I prefer the consistency of Ozil points week in week out.

Triggerlips' theory for late wildcard use says you should avoid differentials - and I agree with him. If Cazorla looks like the price-rise favourite, I'll get him - but I think it will be Ozil or Eriksen in this case.

You are going to lose 15-20 points on a WCed team. Most of your players are likely to blank, rested, injured or are genearlly out of form.

If you multiply that out to a GW 23 wc you are going to lose at least 40-50 points over a team that is set up nicely over the coping fixtures. Is that worth it?

Rooney - Suffering a groin injury and Moyes said he will need a couple of weeks to recover.
            Lukaku - Out of form.
Morrison - Injured/ out of favour, about to be tranferred? WH suck anyhow
Sterling - Slight possibility of rotation
Wilson - Stoke can barely keep a cleanie consistently
Clyne - Nailed on atm? Possibly but do you want to run that risk with chambers around now
Dawson - No idea why you still have him
Mig - GW1 god. After that spiralled to shyte

No worries :). Price rises mean shyte now. with no DGWs on the horrizon. You can easily afford a decent team if you dowgrade a defender. I i assume you have no plan to get RVP, so you should string a good team together.

Honestly it's not as bad as people make it to be.

If confirmed out, just transfer out Walcott and Rooney this week. Save a few mill to upgrade Sterling next week

Sterling should get the start since Sturridge haven't even fully fit yet, he will be eased in.

You can still get 11 good players out this week and 1 FT next week to upgrade Sterling.

I think I'm doing Wally Rooney -> Ozil JRod this week and Sterling -> Yaya next.

Just read through the last page and and interesting debate on double up defense.

In general I would prefer having a wider variety of teams in my defense but I am not against double defense at all. People are misjudging the concept and write it off to fast. In the end it's the points that matters, not where you get them from.

Best scenario is GW 16's Everton double defense fail. A lot of people are using this as an example for going against double defense.

Safe to most if not all of us had Coleman at that point and doubling up Everton defense which was fruitless in the end. However Coleman saved us with his attacking points.

But regardless of you doubling up or not, Coleman's points is still there.

If you think Jagielka, at that GW 16, is going to gather more points than lets say Zabaleta for the next 6 GWs. The fact that you have Coleman or not, should not affect your decision for going with Jagielka over Zabaleta.

IF there are EQUAL chances of Jagielka and Zabaleta scoring the same points (i.e. same amounts of CS and baps in the same period) then going with Zabaleta is the better choice because of distribution of risk (hedging).

That's the way I see it.

Am I the only one who is considering going with Terry instead of Coleman for Jan WC? I think they'll score about the same amount of goals (2-3 more with some luck) until the end of the season, but I fancy Chelsea to keep more CS and Terry to get more baps as a CB.

He was amazing under Benitez, but he had much more license to bomb forward then. Under Mourinho the fullbacks seem sooo defensive. Iva does venture forward now and then, but that's just the way he plays, look at Azp and Cole playing now...

I'll be going cheap rotation for GKs or just Boruc if fit, JT and Mert as defenders. As things stand now I feel there's too many good midfielders and strikers (when Aguero returns), so I'll be going relatively cheap in defense + GK spots. Late WC.

This is my issue. Currently with my defence and poor team value, I can't afford this 3 big +1 mid price midfield template that everyone seems to be able to afford. I may have to follow suit and go cheap in the goalie department again...

Well, I think it'll come down to who bought who at what price. For me, I've never owned Coleman (even though he was literally the FIRST name on my team sheet in July, how I managed to remove him I still don't know)... so will be hard to afford him now anyways. I guess I'm just trying to justify not breaking the bank to get him.

Mutch has to be the best pick due to price.

Puncheon could be a good pick if he start producing like he has done in the past and his attacking stats are promising, but for a 5th mid I'd be tempted to just pick the cheaper Mutch
