Sky Sports Focus – Gameweek 22

After back-to-back double Gameweeks it’s time to assess the usual info including Man of the Match (MoTM) awards, bonus point beneficiaries and the current market trends. As always, we also look ahead to the forthcoming fixtures, offering our preferred captain setup, with one eye on Gameweek 23.

Gameweek 20 Man of the Match Awards

Listed below is a match-by-match breakdown of the players that won the plaudits from the Sky Sports reporters last time out, earning five additional points for the Man-of-the-Match award.

FixtureMoTM
West Ham vs West BromSaido Berahino
Aston Villa vs SwanseaJonathan de Guzman
Hull vs FulhamTom Huddlestone
Man City vs Crystal PalaceYannick Bolasie
Norwich vs Man UnitedNemanja Vidic
Cardiff vs SunderlandFraizer Campbell

Fulham vs West HamScott Parker
Liverpool vs HullLuis Suarez
Southampton vs ChelseaOscar
Stoke vs EvertonLeighton Baines
Sunderland vs Aston VillaGabriel Agbonlahor
West Brom vs NewcastleSaido Berahino
Man United vs TottenhamVlad Chiriches

Over the double Gameweek, four defenders, eleven midfielders and five forwards shared the awards. Eden Hazard picked up his seventh of the season and has now been awarded more MoTM awards than any other player, one more than Wayne Rooney and Curtis Davies. West Brom’s wonderkid Saido Berahino picked up the award twice over the two matches and comes in at only 5.9 million – for those opting for an expensive five in midfield, he looks a decent enabler.

Gameweek 20 Bonus Points

Five goalkeepers managed five saves or more – Hugo Lloris, Vito Mannone, David Marshall, David Stockdale and Jussi Jaaskelainen were the top shot-stoppers. Jaaskelainen has now joined Brad Guzan and Simon Mignolet at the top of the bonus points table with 10 additional points.

In defence, a total of 13 players gathered bonus, eight for tackles and eight for passes completed – the three players who managed to achieve both were Kyle Naughton, Daniel Agger and Vincent Kompany. Crystal Palace full-back Joel Ward is still the top defender for bonus points overall with an additional 18 points.

In midfield, 30 players earned bonus points – 19 for tackling and 20 for passes. Several players managed to gather both over the two games but a special mention for Cheick Tiote and Steve Sidwell, who both gained six additional points each after a combination of passing and tackling. Liverpool’s Lucas is now the top bonus-point darling in midfield, with 30 additional points earned.

Chelsea’s Andre Schurrle will have impressed his manager Jose Mourinho as he was the only forward to earn bonus for four completed tackles, earning himself an additional two points.

A reminder that Fantasy Football Scout Members can access all the data regarding bonus points using player stats and clicking the Sky Sports tab.

The Transfer Trends

Top Transfers Out

NameTeamValue% of Managers
RamseyArsenal5.821.16%
OzilArsenal8.89.35%
GiroudArsenal8.55.63%
JagielkaEverton6.95.13%
LovrenSouthampton5.23.76%

Injury reigns supreme as all of the players mentioned above have found themselves hampered by the festive schedule. Dejan Lovren returned to the first team last week after a bout of illness, whilst Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud are both in contention for Arsenal’s trip to Villa on Monday.

Top Transfers In

NameTeamValue% of Managers
HazardChelsea8.86.64%
LallanaSouthampton5.95.73%
ColemanEverton6.53.90%
NegredoMan City8.63.75%
ToureMan City8.63.64%

The top two transfers in, Eden Hazard and Adam Lallana, look like direct replacements for Arsenal duo Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey as they come in at virtually the same price. Yaya Toure and Seamus Coleman’s form has been too good to ignore and it’s easy to why they are amongst the top five in. Alvaro Negredo looks like something of a stop-gap whilst we await the return of Sergio Aguero.

Gameweek 22 Proposed Captain Strategy

Looking ahead to the captaincy choices for Gameweek 22, there is an opportunity for three armband options if you choose to use a transfer for Monday night’s game.

Our Strategy:
Emmanuel Adebayor (Crystal Palace at Home) → Luis Suarez (Stoke Away) → Mesut Ozil (Aston Villa Away)

For Saturday January 11, Romelu Lukaku is also an option as he plays at home to Norwich. For the fixtures on Sunday 12, we opt for a captain change to Liverpool’s Luis Suarez who squares up to Stoke at the Britannia. Alternatively, a Man City asset is an option.

Arsenal roll up to Villa Park on Monday the 13th and, with Aston Villa’s defence looking shaky in recent weeks, Ozil looks a good option for points – as an added bonus, Arsenal play at home to Fulham on Saturday 18, where again he looks an enticing option.

With Theo present my FT has already gone so, what to do about Rooney

    a) take a hit
    b) play Clyne
    c) play Puncheon

With b or c Kun would come in for him next GW, with a, he'd come in for Lukaku

My ML leader and main rival has brought in Ade for Rooney and he did it for free, makes no sense to get the same player he got and be 4 points worse off as a result

My WC has come down to:

    A) Boruc/Davis + Coleman;
    or
    B) Boruc/Mannone + Nastasic.

Looking at fixtures, I might just prefer B...

If you HAD to choose, what strategy do you think would result in more points over a whole season?

    A. Zero hits across all 38 game weeks.
    B. Being forced to take one hit every single week.

      A

Being forced implies that you do regardless of any benefit, so selling a player you want to one you don't just because you need to take a hit.

Hits are not always bad, it depends on how they are used

Too many variables in that for me to come to a solid answer. A flawed study it would likely be. What it really all comes down to is whether or not the players you choose end up getting the points, hits or no hits. It either comes off, or it doesn't.

A few years back two people tied for first. One had taken no hits and won on the basis of fewest transfers. Other guy took many, many hits and ended up second. There is no best strategy, although taking 37 hits would not always work out and taking no hits could leave points on the table (DGWs for example)

A, just plan well and don't make knee jerks. You have 2 FTs every other week and more often than not the .1m you MAY lose doesn't justify the -4 points.

As I'm activating my WC now and I'm really bored, I thought of checking out some of the differentials for each position and listing them:

    GKs:
    Mannone (4.4%); Marshall (5.4%); Ruddy (2.3%); Speroni (2.3%)

    Defenders:
    Azpilicueta (2.2%); Sagna (4.2%); Rafael (0.5%); Chiriches (0.6%); Kompany (5.3%); Nastasic (0.9%); Bardsley (2%); Clyne (4.4%)

    Midfielders:
    Cazorla (2.6%); Silva (5.6%); Mirallas (4.4%); Eriksen (3.9%); Gerrard (5.2%)

    Forwards:
    Berbatov (3.1%); Adebayor (5.4%); Bony (3.3%); Torres (1.9%); Podolski (2.2%); Gouffran (2%); Hooper (1.4%)

If you can think of any others, feel free to add to the list 🙂

Interesting post and important to be aware of if you're chasing. How are Jrod and Mutch looking?

    Chaps quick, need responses...
    On WC
    A) Lallana or Bony have Kun, Suarez uptop
    B) 6.4m or Adebayor
    C) Eriksen or Bony/Lukaku

sorry guys, bit of a repost. Who do people prefer of Cabaye, Eriksen, or Lallana as a long term pick? Currently have Cabaye but on WC so could change. Got JRod upfront so thinking maybe not Lallana although fixtures are nice...

I might just play Clyne or Puncheon and avoid the hit.

i can take 1 Rooney drop without it affecting my sale price. JRod is rising, but I have 0.8 contingency in wc plans atm, so 1 rise won't hurt.

I always prefer to play attackers over defenders, more upside

Team is as stands. FT used for Theo--->Ozil.

    Howard
    Coleman Mertesacker Burner
    Mirallas Hazard Ozil Whittingham
    Rooney Suarez Negredo

    Harper Sterling Shaw Chester

Would you..? Leaning to 1 myself..

    1 - Play Sterling
    2 - Play Shaw
    3 - Rooney--->Ade or JRod for -4
4 - WC (I cant justify this myself despite how bad I want to boot Mirallas and get in JRod, Ward and others who are rising soon and in my WC plans)
