Fantasy Football Scout Cup VIII – Quarter Final Draw

The Fantasy Football Scout Cup, as sponsored by Paddy Power, is now down to the final eight managers after resuming action last weekend. All eight of our remaining quarter-finalists sit inside the top 70,000 in the overall Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings, though one of our managers will enter the next round as firm favourite:

Cunny Funts is the man in question – a total score of 1,373 so far earns him a ranking of 1,462 in FPL. He’s up against Yes the Sess!, who is the lowest-ranked manager still in with a shout of the silverware – currently nestled just inside the top 62,000, he’s very much the underdog in this tie, having scraped through with a 58-point haul in Gameweek 21.

Sim716 (61,243 overall) squares up to Tdubb05 (45,088) for a place in the semi-finals. The former eliminated our moderator, Applebonkers, last time around, whilst the latter will fancy his chances, having knocked out previous favourite Tony Hibbert’s Love Child.

Tal goes head-to-head with 11 Men in Flight this time around. This quarter-final is the most evenly matched on paper, with respective rankings of 45,190 and 32,963. Whilst Tal has already played the winter wildcard, his opponent’s is currently active ahead of the weekend deadline.

Our final match-up sees ec3dm take on Ajax. The latter has activated the wildcard button and, with an overall ranking of 27,664 to his opponent’s 56,637, is the more fancied to progress.

As always, we wish final eight the best of luck as they brace themselves for battle!

Who's the best bet for this week

    A) Ade -> Sturridge
    B) Negredo -> Aguero (doubt whether he'll start)

My front 3 at the moment are Suarez, Ade & Negredo

Today's attempt at a wildcard team....

    Boruc, Mannone
    Baines, Coleman, Koscielny, (Gabiddon,) (John)
    Hazard, Silva, Navas, Eriksen (Kasami)
    Suarez, Aguero, Sturridge

Pretty happy with this one, unfortunately no money ITB so no chance of getting this next week.
I really want to press that button but have 10 out of 11 players at home this week.

What's the worst pick in this draft?

    Mannone - Marshall
    Mertesaker - Coleman - Clyne - Gabbi - Chester
    Özil - Hazard - Lallana - Eriksen - Mutch
    Aguero - Suarez - Sturridge

Mutch. Not nailed on, been injured and under pressure from new signings. For the 8th attacker you may as well get a Jedinank/Parker who plays every game.

Also personally don't think Ozil's worth his price tag but that's just me, virtually everyone else has him.

Mutch is not causing any headache for me.

Özil is my biggest issue i think.
Can't decide to go with or without.

Ozil is frustrating but should score well overall through the year. Waiting for someone else in their midfield to consistently deliver points and I'll replace him.

        Mannone - Boruc
        Merte - Kolarov - Coleman - Gabbidon - Chester
        Ramsey - Haz - Lallana - Silva - Januzaj
        Aguero - Giroud - Suarez

I prefer this team as you have 3 decent defenders to play each week and a better first sub.
I prefer Sturridge to Giroud but that's just me (funded by Merte to Kos?).

I'll get 6.0 for Merte, so i COULD do it.
If i sell Özil, i feel i have to get Giroud for Arse cover. Not too sure.

Problem is, my wildcard isn't active until Saturday, so that plan will be screwed by price rises.

            Thanks for your help 🙂

Nothing wrong with the Giroud argument, most people on here would agree.
Just from a personal point of view I think Sturridge will get more points and I'm not worried about coverage.
I have the same problem - posted a team above that I won't be able to afford next week.

Much better. I am taking Giroud as my Arsenal cover as well, and Boruc ahead of Marshall was spot on. Really cannot see Cardiff getting clean-sheets anytime soon. Just be aware of the fact you might feel tempted to field your five midfielders every week. Maybe it would be wise to downgrade someone (Ramsey, maybe, since you have Giroud?) and strengthen your defence/keepers.

This draft involves a lot of transfers for me, and i haven't activated my WC yet.
Will be doing it this Saturday, after some price rises. Likely i'll have to downgrade one of Ramsey or Januzaj. Probably Januzaj. Will see what i can do with the extra change 😉

To be honest, at this very moment the gamble is Ramsey. He had a lovely first-half of season, yes; but how will he respond after his injury? Plus, he even might be eased into the first-team. Januzaj, on the other hand, is the only hope in a very boring Rooney/van Persie-less United side. He's also on set-piece duties and everything. Downgrading Rambo would give you more money to splash in other areas, think wisely.

      He might not start.

I'm in the same position and probably going to do the transfer but it's a risk as he could easily be on the bench again. I suppose 20-30 mins against a tired defence isn't the worst thing in the world.

So my bet on Arsenal line up when Arteta and Ramsey return:

Flamini and Gnabry drop to the bench...? That makes Wilshere a good punt, no?

So here's my settled wildcard team. Gone for maximum big hitters and hope for the best with my cheapies, while ensuring my defence was solid. With a team value of over 110m I wanted to put that to my advantage.

    Mannone/Boruc
    Mertesacker Terry Ward Chester Hudson
    Hazard Ozil Silva Eriksen Pozuelo
    Suarez Aguero Sturridge

Gives me a little wiggle room to downgrade Ozil to Ramsey, Aguero to anyone if he gets injured again and same for Sturridge in the coming weeks.

At the moment I have nothing in the bank with that so that's the card lady fate has dealt me. The problem is I could hack around at some of the others, downgrade Terry for example for another cheap fifth mid, but then they could fall out of favour. I've rarely played my cheap mids this year, an when I have its usually been 2pts for them.

I'll admit it is something I'm looking at though.

Fairs, I wouldn't downgrade Terry to do it.

Maybe Whittaker over Ward and Parker/Jedinak over Pozuelo?

You should be fine as you can always play him last on the bench. Problems could arise if we get blanks for cup games or a big fixture build up and loads of rotation and you aren't going to want to waste a transfer on changing your cheapie.

Ozil and Sturridge are my 'wiggle room' playersto do any necessary make sure I can get 11 out upgrades. Jedinak gets 2pts every week, Pozeulo 1-2pts. I can live with him for a while.

I quite like the look of ex Brighton player Noone. Luckily Cardiff have terrible fixtures, but I like him in a few weeks.

I think that is something I may look at when I free up some cash in a few gameweeks to do Ozil to ramsey. I like the idea of a ManC Ars and Che defender for the rest of the season.

Ramsey being out meant I really couldn't afford to do without Ozil when so many rivals have him and he is so consistent especially at home.

In fact yes, Ozil ownership is pretty high and if he run riots tomorrow, it could be dramatic for non-owners.
It is not a bad idea to downgrade Ozil later then upgrade the defenders.

Was considering something very similar but with Lallana over Eriksen. Why do you favour Eriksen?

It was the extra cash..which meant I got to keep Mertesacker, who I have a soft spot for. But also the Southampton news. I don't like uncertainty. Eriksen plays well in an attacking side. So too does Lallana, but his side is now run by someone who wants to sell it and possibly him, allegedly. Too much uncertainty for a safe player like me.

and the only other legitmate captaincy option, especially with those home fixtures

Let's be honest if he wasn't just coming back from injury (thus leaving doubts about his minutes) there's a very high chance we'd be going with him as (c) over Suarez this week

His price is rising as a result of people getting him in early. Yes he scored, probably at the easiest time in the game against a side beaten tired and of reasonably poor quality. Negredos goals on the other hand were scored at the tough periods of the game.

I think worst-case scenario he'll get 30 minutes. Aguero at home to Cardiff for 30 minutes > Lukaku away to West Brom for 90 minutes imo, so I made the transfer (had enough saved in the bank from my wc). 30 minutes is plenty of time for him to get a goal or two, plus we get him at his cheapest.

one issue with the kolarov punt is you can't just keep long term and start every gameweek risk free as he comes off the bench quite a bit if he doesn't start, maybe even more so now nasri is out for a bit.

This has always been the issue.

I think I'll just be getting Kompany. I read you piece on Demichelis and am monitoring, but he's 5.9, Kompany is only 0.3 more and I'm not convinced you get anything extra from Demichelis, other than a greater risk of rotation. If he was 4.9 it may have been worth it.
