Fixtures

Gameweek 29 Scenarios

While it’s easy to dismiss a weekend of FA Cup fourth round ties as academic, Fantasy managers need to start contemplating the impact that the eventual sixth round ties will have – potentially decimating Gameweek 29 as we know it.

Right now, only two Premier League fixtures from the March 8 programme are absolutely safe. Norwich will square up to Stoke at Carrow Road, while both United and West Brom will somewhat compensate for their postponed Gameweek 28 fixtures against City and Sunderland respectively by going head-to-head at the Hawthorns a week later.

The other eight Premier League matches in the Gameweek are potentially at risk, depending on how the FA Cup fifth Round ties pan out.

Here’s a summary of the Gameweek 29 situation as it stands with the scenarios discussed:

Safe From Postponement

Norwich vs Stoke
West Brom vs Man United

Potentially Postponed

Cardiff vs Fulham
With both currently still in the FA Cup, one, both or neither could qualify for the sixth round. Fulham face a replay with Sheffield United at the Cottage, before taking on either Nottingham Forest or Preston. Cardiff, meanwhile, will go into their fifth round tie with holders Wigan as favourites.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton
This one could easily be saved. Southampton face a testing trip to the Stadium of Light in the fifth round, but Gus Poyet’s Sunderland, with one Cup final booked already, may well be distracted as they continue to scrap for Premier League survival. Palace are already out and concentrating on avoiding relegation.

Liverpool vs Sunderland
As mentioned, Sunderland will face Southampton in the fifth round, then, and perhaps look more likely to progress than Liverpool who make a daunting trip to Arsenal. Having said that, with Bayern Munich just days after their fifth round tie, Arsene Wenger could well field a weakened side and hand Liverpool the opportunity to progress.

Newcastle vs Everton
The Magpies are out but Everton will face off with Swansea in their fifth round tie and will be favourites to progress, thus postponing the league trip to the North East.

West Ham vs Hull
While the Hammers can concentrate on their relegation scrap, Steve Bruce’s side have the opportunity of a passage to the sixth round via a testing away trip to Brighton.

Chelsea vs Tottenham
The first tie out of the hat in yesterday’s draw paired Man City with Chelsea, putting two Gameweek 29 fixtures at risk. Should Chelsea see off City in the Cup, there is a possibility that their fixture with Spurs could remain in Gameweek 29 but only if Tottenham fail to progress to the last 16 of the Europa League.

Man City vs Aston Villa
If City defeat Chelsea at the Etihad in the fifth round, their fixture with Villa will drop out of Gameweek 29. With Manuel Pellegrini’s men facing Barcelona in the week of March 10, there is no chance of this fixture shifting to midweek.

Arsenal vs Swansea
Both remain in the fifth round with Arsenal at home to Liverpool and Swansea also facing Merseyside opponents with a trip to Everton. As mentioned, the Gunners could elect to rest players for the clash, with Liverpool and a second-leg Champions League clash against Bayern looming on March 11. That tie makes it impossible for this Gameweek 29 fixture to go ahead should either side make the sixth round.

In Summary

While we’ve presented the option that any postponed Premier League fixtures could still remain within Gameweek 29, it should be noted that this was not the case last season. The FA Cup sixth round shifted several fixtures which eventually dropped in Gameweek 33 as double Gameweeks.

Based on last season, then, future double Gameweeks look very likely to be on the horizon as a result of the FA Cup sixth round. While it would be folly to plan accordingly, equally, it’s worth noting the above factors when considering your mid-term planning. We will of course offer full information on these scenarios as they develop via the fifth round ties.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Couple of questions to help me nail down the last few spots in my wildcard....

How risky do you think Cabaye is, given all the transfer speculation?

Do we think Fabio will go straight into the Cardiff side? Could be reasonable value at 4.1, especially given the questions surrounding Ole's preferred CB pairing.

if i was on WC this week, i'd get him in for nor.

If he does go on Friday, then you've got some ready made replacements in Lallana, Eriksen and Ramsey (probably)

Yeah true... I don't know if there's an element with Fabio of us, as FPL managers, wanting him to be a "budget Rafael" whereas in fact he's not really got much in the way of pedigree, and does seem pretty injury prone.

answer may be i'll worry about that if it happens, but fabio's injury proneness really worries me. although saying that i've been banging that drum about gabbidon all season and he's only missed a couple of matches

After much pondering, pretty much settled on this.

    Mannone Marshall
    Coleman Cahill Kos Vlaar Gabbidon
    Hazard Yaya Lallana AJ Noone
    Aguero Suarez Ade
    .7 ITB

    Alternatives I've considered:
    1. Marshall + Ade -> K.Davies + Sturridge (0ITB)
    2. Lallana + Ade -> J.Rod + Mata
    3. Vlaar + Ade -> Olsson + Giroud

    Thoughts/comments? Thanks!

Would welcome views - have one FT, 0.4 ITB which I was originally saving for Cabaye -> Eriksen / Ramsey if Cabaye was sold - but it appears that Cabaye will now be playing.

    Boruc (Davis)

    Sagna Kolorov Coleman (Bardsley, Ward)

    Hazard Silva Lallana Cabaye (Januzaj)

    Suarez Aguero Giroud

Currently considering Giroud -> Bony due to Arsenal's congested upcoming fixtures, and Bony's improved fixtures (especially given he performed during their nasty run of eveton/chelsea/villa/city/utd/spurs)

This would give me £1.7 ITB to upgrade elsewhere next week (possibly Coleman -> Baines).

    Any other views?

I'm loving Mata @ UTD already...(given i'm hoping to get Rooney on WC):

Juan Mata on Wayne Rooney: "I can't wait to play alongside him. For me he's one of the best players in the history of this country. He's a striker who can score, assist and come into midfield to take the ball. I will enjoy it. For me he's an unbelievable player and I will try to connect with him as much as possible and find the gaps in rival defences. I think that's my best style of play, to get into positions where I can assist the strikers."

    RMWCT:

    Mannone (Boruc)
    Azpi | Kosc | Ward | Coleman* | Bruce
    Hazard | Yaya | Cabaye | Lallana | Noone
    Suarez | Aguero | Bony

    0.4 in bank

Really want to get Mata in, but for which of my midfield? If I do it for Cabaye/Lallana, I'd have to take profit on Coleman who I've had since 5.0m. That 0.9m loss in TV will really hurt.

I don't know if I should get Mata or RVP on WC. Or both Mata and Rooney.

Thinking all 3 with a midfield of Hazard Ramsey Mirallas/Cabaye/Eriksen and two rotating cheapies (Puncheon, Noone, Ki etc..)

Is Mariappa nailed? Need to squeeze .1 from my WC team and considering bringing him in for Gabbidon

He appears to be favoured. Parr and Moxey seem to be fighting it out for a place.

Not sure, he was playing in Ward's position (RB) while Ward was playing in midfield.

Who is the most nailed-on of the 3.9ish defenders?

I'm hoping I won't need to play him but, with Chester out, and two other doubts, I need to get in somebody reasonably reliable for as low a cost as possible.

I was thinking either Bruce (3.9) or Rosenior (4.0) of Hull or R Bennet (3.9) who seems pretty nailed-on as long as Turner is out at least.

Which would you say is the best option? Anyone else I should look at?

As a Fulham fan I wouldn't recommend our upcoming fixtures, especially with our massive defensive frailties. Having said that Burn and Hangeland appear to be 1st choice now and we did look more solid against Arsenal & Norwich in the cup with them starting

Do you see Burn starting most games ahead of the likes of Amorebieta, Hughes and Senderos then?

With Chester injured, he's gotta be worth a punt as a 5th def?

Bruce is nailed for a while I think. I'm hoping potentially Mariappa could be too (see above)

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess you take some risk when you're paying 3.9. I'm fed up of using my FTs on them though... 🙂

Purchase price is irrelevant... Which one is going to get you the most points per game per pound.

Looks likes United may field a full strength squad this week at some stage, with Rooney, RvP back in training. Also interesting that Mourinho has said Mata will be played in his preferred position in the middle at United during negotiations. Looking forward to tomorrow night...

Sounds like Moyes is going to move to an attacking fullback system in the future to give the width and to allow Mata to play behind 1/2 strikers.
