Moving Target

Moving Target – Wilfried Zaha

It’s a rare occasion for any player to appear under our Scouting radar twice in a single season. With a loan move from United to Cardiff last week, Wilfried Zaha becomes a Moving Target just three months after his initial Scout Report:

His arrival at Cardiff – alongside Fabio – follows a trend of young, attack-minded players joining the Bluebirds ranks as Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer revamps his Premier League strugglers. The move comes at a good time for the talented young winger, with Adnan Januzaj stealing the limelight as United’s latest hot prospect and the arrival of Juan Mata only serving to further reduce his chances of game time. Speaking on his arrival, Solskjaer identified the new signing as someone who will make the difference in the attacking third:

“He has pace, power, technical ability and goes past people. He will give us that extra change of tempo in the final third, where we really need it… He will bring that little final bit to find pockets of space and produce a bit of magic.”

The History

The Ivory Coast-born Zaha joined Palace’s youth set-up at just nine years of age before making his debut for the club eight years later. His first campaign as a regular produced a single goal and five assists from 41 appearances, before Zaha went on to deliver six goals and seven assists in 2011/12.

The following season, Zaha became Sir Alex Ferguson’s last signing at United when he sealed a £15m deal to bring the Crystal Palace talent to Old Trafford back in January of 2013. The youngster remained at Selhurst Park for the remainder of the season, playing a key role in their successful promotion campaign. Zaha went on to finish the season strongly, registering six goals and eight assists in 43 league games and signed off in style by scoring a couple of goals and creating one in the Championship play-offs as he fired Palace back into the top flight.

The Prospects

According to Moyes, the champions received several offers for Zaha and identified the Bluebirds as the right club for the winger to gain top-flight experience. After the loan deal was confirmed, the United boss explained the reasoning behind his decision to allow Zaha to move to Wales temporarily:

“I said right at the start of the season that if I could get Wilf the games, I’d keep him, but if I couldn’t then I’d get him some games on loan… in the end we felt Cardiff was the right choice for him. Hopefully he will go and get those games, show what he can do in the Premier League and be ready to come back to us at the end of the season”

Considering that he had previously managed just 30 minutes under Moyes, it’s fair to say Zaha’s Fantasy prospects can only be improved by his Bluebirds move. Comfortable on both flanks, and with the ability to play through the middle – either as a striker or in a supporting role – the youngster’s versatility will provide Solskjaer with plenty of options, though we expect him to line up on the left of a 4-2-3-1, as he did in this weekend’s victory over Norwich.

The fleet-footed winger was credited by his new manager as having “changed the game” on Saturday’s debut, a performance in which he assisted Craig Bellamy for the equalising goal after replacing Peter Whittingham. Indeed, Whittingham looks the likeliest to be affected by Zaha’s arrival – having started every league game thus far, he was somewhat ruthlessly withdrawn by Solskjaer just 38 minutes into the Canaries encounter. Given Zaha’s immediate impact, Whittingham’s 7% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners have valid reasons for concern as Solskjaer injects more pace into his side on the flanks.

With current ownership sitting at less than 2%, and a drop in price from 6.5 to 5.4 in FPL, Zaha (priced at 4.9 in the Sky Sports game and 1.5 in the Sun Dream Team) may well be worth our consideration as a budget midfield prospect if his display against the Canaries is anything to go by. Ironically, it comes at a time when Januzaj’s game time has diminished as a result of Mata’s arrival at Old Trafford, while the likes of the similarly-priced Ross Barkley has struggled for returns, with just one goal in his last 15 appearances.

The short-term fixtures are also in Zaha’s favour. Games against Swansea, Villa, Hull and Fulham in their next five could allow early adopters the chance to prosper in the coming weeks, whilst those already holding Jason Puncheon may even consider Zaha as a viable midfield partner – Cardiff and Palace offer a home/away rotation for 11 of the remaining 14 Gameweeks.

Certainly excting against Fulham, but just got Sturridge in and fancy Liverpool to get a few againt Arsenal. And his fixtures after is pretty good.

But if I get Mata in, he is tempting as captain! So that would be pretty exciting to 😀

This, or maybe more likely with Ramires-Matic-Lampard midfield and Oscar-Schurrle-Hazard forward (or higher midfield, if you will), high pressing, physical approach, keeping City away from the ball.

          1) 4-3-3 or 2) defensive 4-2-3-1

Possibility of Schurrle playing false 9 as well but I doubt it.

If 1) I would expect Matic Ramires and Mikel as the 3, with Hazard Willian Etoo as the front 3.

If 2) then Matic and Mikel holding, Hazard left side Ramires right, Oscar central and Etoo up front

          2) is most likely

If he is serious about attacking them then Ramires could play in Mikels place and Willian in Ramires', but there have been several occasions in big games where Ramires has been played on the right to be more defensively solid

I think Willian because he works hard so will be fine defensively, but explosive on the counter. It's got to be a sit and counter job tonight I'd think. That's where Chelsea are strong and Man City are weak.

he is undoubtedly the main one this season yes
past examples have been phil bardsley a couple of seasons, or ryan taylor, albeit ryan taylor was slightly different as his scoring made sense it was just a bit odd as he didn't merit his starting place

What? Why? It always made great sense why he gets points. 1. Advanced role and lot of touches in attacking areas, shots etc., 2) great shot, always has scored a lot of goals (check his stats back in France), 3) playmaker of his team, whole game passing through him (gets assists in counter attacks), 4) takes set pieces.

yep, the 3 games i had him for were painful watches. it was basically please get a free kick in this exact area of the pitch, or please win a penalty, as he was otherwise stationed on the half-way line initiating rather than being involved.

actually think i bought him at the most logical time, when aguero was first ruled out meaning pens, and when man city played palace at a time when the fixtures were so lustered that i wanted who i thought was the most nailed on option. he was rested that game of course. then next match he had 1 shot all match and luckily it went in via a deflection against swansea (the orignal shot was headed straight at tremmel), then next match man city didnt win a free kick or penalty so he blanked, as he should.

then decided to keep just silva as he made more sense for the cardiff match. yaya then scores 13 to silva's 5. this was a 'normal' goal for yaya though, the kind he has been scoring for 4 seasons now so i wasn't mad. just frustrated. his score v spurs was maddening rather than frustrating

As soon as Kun went off v Spurs you just knew a pen was coming.

Not had Yaya all season - I like my players to look like they are trying to get points (silly logic I know!). Just raged out Ozil for same reasoning. Ramsey looks like he is trying as does Lallana.

Yaya is a great player but you cannot convince me he has been a bit fortunate to get all those points. I may end up with Yaya and Silva soon just as a tactical move to stay ahead in my ML but for that reason only...

Was contemplating him earlier for the odd explosion. Just figure you need to get nailed on defenders and forget about them so you can focus more on explosive players upfront ?

For those who didn't read this earlier today,

        LONG POST ALERT

For those who like me are considering a striker, here is why you shouldn't bring in Dzeko or Negredo.
Looking at the run of fixtures City have,

Sat 08 February (A) Norwich City BPL
Wed 12 February (H) Sunderland BPL
Sat 15 February (H) Chelsea FA Cup
Tue 18 February (H) FC Barcelona UCL
Sat 22 February 2014 (H) Stoke City BPL

It is almost certain that their FPL assets will be subject to rest and rotation. Most of the people out here already have Silva or Yaya and doubling up will complicate matters even more. I know the fixtures are tempting and that City could easily score quite a few against the upcoming opponents, but take into account that investing in too many of their assets come with a great deal of high risk. Also factor in that after GW27(i.e the Stoke game) , City have two possible blanks coming up. So bringing in a player this week only to remove him the week(s) after would be in my opinion,a waste of a transfer.

Looking at the other options in the same price bracket as Dzeko and Negredo, here are some of the options that appeal to me

        - Sturridge
Nailed on.14 goals in the last 16 appearances. Remarkable consistency. After the Arsenal game(dont discount him scoring even in that one) , he has Ful(A) Swa(H) and Sou(A)

        - Benteke
Nailed on.Seems to have found his way back to form. No shots in the previous game against Everton was alarming . Still chipped in with an assist to make up for it though. He has Whu(H) Car(A) New(A) and Nor(H) coming up.

        -Lambert
Nailed on now that Osvaldo has left. Got a 15 point haul this week. Has penalties which is why I picked him over JRod as more or less both have the same price. He has Sto(H) Hul(A) Whu(A) Liv(H) coming up

Most importantly, all 3 will play when Negredo/Dzeko blank in gw28. My personal option is Sturridge because of fixtures and consistency. Most would argue Benteke is a better choice but keep in mind Villa are a counter-attacking team that play better away from home. Hope this helped you make your mind up.Cheers from a Man City fan!

9,1,7,7,15 last games for Dzeko and dirt cheap. He also tends to score when he comes on as a sub. Just make sure to have a decent bench player. Dzeko FTW 😉

There is a one pointer in there as well 😛
Security of stats, form and fixtures make Sturridge an explosive option of 3 in 1.
Unfortunately Negredo/Dzeko dont have all the above 3 qualities!

Its a good post. I chose my Man City assets with care and though I love Silva anyway he is lightly raced, as are Dzeko and Navas. Thus I think they are more likely to see FPL game-time. I did have Kun over Dzeko prior to the injury for the same reason.

I can't see in the form City are in how you can't have at least one City striker - even if they only get 30 minutes they normally notch. I'm now happy to have Suarez/Sturridge and Dzeko - who can be swapped with J Rod if a problem. And the money helps the rest of my side. Million dollar question will be what to do when Kun gets back...

Thanks for the feedback! Dont forget Silva wasn't rested in the christmas period at all even though he had just come back from injury. Negredo was,Dzeko was but Silva wasnt!

Also if you have all 3 how to you plan to take them out by gw28, hits should never be an option!

My forwards are Roons, RVP & Suarez.

I'll then switch to a Man City striker for a couple GW's before bringing in an Toffees, Spurs and/or Chelski forward for the GW with blanks.

Baines: owners or recomendations-- Keep or drop for whom?
i have baines and am patient, but hard to ignore:

--3 pts last 3 gw for a 7.4 price tag
--fk out the window as 2 straight gw where hes not the one taking fk, and now looks mirallas more nailed for fk
--cs dont seem to come w/ depleted dfence, mayb again when coleman comes and jags regains form along w distin
--we're left w/ corners and potential assists. tough for that price tag.

CS is the tough cookie that seems to not occur again in short term.

im stuck because i have the mci gw 28 crash so until gw 28 i can only transfer mci out since im going triple mci next 3 gw.
+ need a replacement for chester as my bench is a hospital w/ oviedo.

Scab yep im aware of the bigger issues. im going high risk as im betting on triple mci for their 3 gw fixt which are "pleasant to the eye" but sacrificing no bench.

im just curious as to the baines orders what is everyone doing w/ him if they had the possibility to act upon him. given his stock appeal dropping faster than a falling knife as miralas stepping up.

        Had a wee punt:

Chelsea 1-0 with Hazard the scorer at 100/1

        Stranger things have happened.

I can just see it. Chelsea parking the bus for 85 minutes, before a Torres breakaway, playing it into Hazard to make it 1-0...

I have Coleman, Clyne, Evans, Ward and Sagna. My original plan was to dump Clyne - but now with Evans injured, Coleman returning, and Chambers hurt, do I stick? Dump Evans?

        Basically -
        1) Is there any report on Chambers? Will Clyne get some starts?
        2) Is there any report on Evans? Is he definitely out?

I was comparing the fixtures of the top 3 teams and i think it will be a two-horse race between Chelsea and Mancity. Arsenal will battle it out with Liverpool, United and Spurs for 3rd and 4th spots as usual. If Chelsea manage to win tonight they are in with a very good of becoming champions. 🙂

Just been doing some Yaya v Silva comparison.

I didn't realise Yaya scored 9 of his 12 goals from set plays (3 pens), that's a lot higher than I thought.

Do you know what, I may off load him for Mata and keep Silva.

        Time for the differential ?

But , and with them being the most attacking side in the prem , will this not keep leading to an abundance of free kicks an pens. So while Aguero out surely you gotta hold.

To me it is as simple as this: if, and this may be quite big if, if Silva can avoid injuries, he is due to score more points than YaYa in the long run. So I will keep Silva for the rest of the season. I could have changed him to YaYa and still could, but I just can't believe that YaYa can keep this conversion rate up, meanwhile thinking that Silva being in the heard of all their attacking action he must start to pile up those points. To take YaYa now would be chasing his early season points, but I can't get them anymore, they're gone now.
