Scout Report – Kostas Mitroglou

In what proved to be a hectic last few days of the January transfer window, Fulham manager Rene Meulensteen bolstered his side’s ailing attack by acquiring the prolific Kostas Mitroglou from Greek outfit Olympiakos. The 25-year-old arrives at Craven Cottage on a four-and-a-half year contract, with the Londoners shelling out a club record £11m fee for his services:

Mitroglou joins fellow new arrivals Lewis Holtby, Johnny Heitinga, Larnell Cole and Ryan Tunnicliffe as Meulensteen adds to the Cottagers’ ranks in his bid to steer the club to safety. Speaking to the Fulham official website upon completion of the deal, the new frontman went on to say:

“I’m very happy that I’m here in the Premier League, and especially with Fulham which is a major club in the league. I’m here because I want to fulfil the club’s targets and I want to help the club achieve their goals. I was really flattered that they wanted me so badly and I’m really happy to be here. I’m really happy that I will work with René Meulensteen. I know that he has a lot of experience in football. He explained to me how he works and I am really looking forward to working with him. I also spoke to Giorgos [Karagounis] before I came here and he told me only the best things about Fulham.”

The History

Having moved to Germany as a youngster, Mitroglou excelled in the youth ranks at MSV Duisburg and Borussia Monchengladbach before returning to his native country in 2007 to sign for Olympiakos. The six-foot-two forward struggled to make a real impression in his first few season at the club, though – Mitroglou was mainly a peripheral figure, producing 12 goals and seven assists over 55 games in four-and-a-half seasons before a loan move to Panionios in January 2011 afforded him the chance to flourish, with eight goals and an assist from 11 appearances in the Greek top-flight.

In spite of his scoring exploits, Mitroglou was loaned out once again the following season. This time around, he spent the entire campaign with Atromitos and, after notching 16 times in 28 appearances, was voted the Greek Footballer of the Year for 2011/12.

The following season, Mitroglou was retained by his parent club and racked up 11 goals and four assists from 25 league matches – all the more impressive given that 15 of those appearances arrived as a substitute. This term, finally installed as the main man up top, Mitroglou ran riot and notched 14 times in just 12 league games – he also fired a hat-trick against Anderlecht in the Champions League, taking his career tally to nine goals and two assists in 21 appearances in the competition. On the international stage, he’s returned 21 goals and a pair of assists in 49 matches for Greece, scoring three times in the recent World Cup play-off win over Romania, which ensured his nation’s passage to this summer’s tournament in Brazil.

The Prospects

There’s no doubt the Greek’s acquisition is a real coup for the Cottagers, with many European clubs – including Arsenal – previously linked with a move for his services. Whilst he’s expectedly strong in the air for his height, he’s more than just a typical target man – the 25-year-old is fast, agile and possesses a strong work ethic, with a rasping shot making him more than capable from set-piece scenarios outside the area.

With Dimitar Berbatov and Bryan Ruiz both leaving on loan deals until the end of the season, there’s no question Mitroglou will be Meulensteen’s lone striker. Bearing in mind that Darren Bent has netted twice and Steve Sidwell is the club’s top scorer with five league goals to his name, Fulham are in desperate need for a proven marksman to boost their survival bid.

Setting you back 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League (8.0 in the Sky Sports game and 3.0 in the Sun Dream Team), Mitroglou has been favourably priced across the Fantasy games, in spite of his recent scoring endeavours. Whilst cost and game time are on his side, Fulham’s form and fixtures are very much against the Greek. Mitroglou looks poised to make his debut this weekend after his registration arrived too late to allow him to play against Southampton last Saturday – the downside is he rolls up to Old Trafford on Sunday and also has showdowns with Liverpool and Chelsea in the next four Gameweeks.

Last night’s FA Cup defeat at the hands of Sheffield United took Meulensteen’s record to nine losses in 15 matches in charge – the type of form that will surely persuade Fantasy managers to steer well clear of their assets. With the likes of Jay Rodriguez available for a similar price ahead of Southampton’s kind upcoming schedule, Mitroglou will need to adapt to his new surroundings immediately in order to turn our attentions his way but, with Everton and City also on his agenda in the next eight, it seems wise to afford him the time to settle and perhaps reconsider him around the Gameweek 33 mark, when the schedule smiles a little kinder.

Fair enough. String first sub is always a good place up be anyway.

Swansea new manager syndrome and derby make them potentially explosive. But also potentially dodgy.

Captain Mata I'd say. Risk /reward. Plus he'll be wanting his first goal soon and Fulham are tosh.

    The Case for Edin DZEKO.

    (LONG POST ALERT 🙂 )

This is my logic behind my captain choice this week… DZEKO (C).

First of all, I must say - RVP is the obvious captain this week. I’ll be watching United vs Fulham from behind the sofa, because I can’t afford RVP like a few of you lucky people.

Suarez? All the stats show he is suffering a mini-dip in form from his incredible run. I’ve watched a lot of Arsenal this season - Mertesacker + Koscielny have been awesome. I’m not saying he’ll blank… but if there is a week to take the risk, this is it. And I want a gamble. 🙂

In terms of midfielders, there are plenty who could score big - Mata, Silva, Yaya, Hazard… but I don’t trust any of them enough to (C) them. As mids, they could have an awesome game, but find themselves behind every assist. If a striker plays well, he’ll score well in FPL.

So I can’t afford a United striker (not feeling Rooney (C)) and not looking at the mids…

… so here is my case AGAINST the earlier hot topic from Jonty and my case FOR Edin Dzeko. 🙂

Firstly, a simple stat - no one has scored more away goals than City… with 24 out of 26 coming from inside the box - perfect for Dzeko. 😉

Looking in more detail… City’s away fixtures - goals scored vs average goals conceded by home team this season

Format: Fixture / Result / Goals conceded at home per game for opponent / Goals scored by City

    CAR(A) 2-3 - Cardiff - 1.5 per game - City scored 2
    STK(A) 0-0 - Stoke - 1.08 per game - City scored 0
    AVL(A) 2-3 - Villa - 1.58 per game - City scored 2
    WHU(A) 3-1 - Wham - 1.58 per game - City scored 3
    CHE(A) 1-2 - Chelsea - 0.75 per game - City scored 1
    SUN(A) 0-1 - Sunderland - 1.58 per game - City scored 0
    WBA(A) 3-2 - West Brom - 1.16 per game - City scored 3
    SOU(A) 1-1 - Saints - 1.16 per game - City scored 1
    FUL(A) 4-2 - Fulham - 2.08 per game - City scored 4
    SWA(A) 3-2 - Swansea - 1.67 per game - City scored 3
    NEW(A) 2-0 - Newcastle - 1.25 per game - City scored 2
    TOT(A) 5-1 - Spurs - 1.5 per game - City scored 5

So, in these fixtures, the average Premier League team scores 16.91 goals.

City have scored 26 goals. Therefore, I expect them to score freely against Norwich, despite their good home record - and I’d back Dzeko to get involved.

And for those championing Norwich’s home record… they haven’t played City, Spurs, Liverpool or Arsenal at home yet.

    Edin DZEKO:
    - In form (4 goals in 6)
    - Easy to transfer in
    - Currently nailed on (started 7 of the last 8 Prem games)
    - Cheap
    - Prolific team
    - Good fixture
    - Continuing strong fixtures
    - He might not be the best finisher, but he'll get plenty of chances - and he'll take one at least.

Who’s with me? Or who wants an argument? 😉

I would never captain somebody who i was unsure would start, and i have reason to be unsure here with Jovetic in the frame. If you feel different though, then do it. He's a great option, as like you say, he gets plenty of shots and is always a danger. Good fixtures too

Not sure that matters a great deal, as his all round play still helps the team get wins. He works hard. Scored against Cardiff, and Newcastle away leads me to think it's just an anomaly like Giroud not scoring outside of London

        Definitely see him starting.

Negredo isn't fully fit and definitely not match fit.

Pretty sure Jovetic hasn't started for City in the Prem yet since coming back from injury.

After the Chelsea game, City need a result. He won't start Jovetic AND Negredo with the above. Therefore, Dzeko to start. 🙂

It seems that at the moment Pellegrini has more faith in Dzeko than Negredo, Negredo has gone off the boil a bit, I would have more faith in Dzeko being on the pitch longer but that's no guarantee. Definitely agree with the 'faith' bit... he may not be nailed on for long, but I see him starting with one of the other two this week.

He's done the business whilst Aguero and then Negredo have been out.

Not nailed on as he misses a lot of chances. He's always last in line when everyone is fit, namely Jovetic and Negredo.

Norwich keep it tight at home.

No Fernandinho or Aguero, both are big losses.

Can't see better than 2-0 to City with Dzeko not guaranteed a start.

Decent case for but the eye test shows that Dzeko is an average striker at best. I'd score if I was playing in this city team and he's not truely nailed on which would be a disaster for your you C to come off the bench for 20 odd mins. Its a gamble as you said and there is some upside but its not one I'd take.

City scored 26 away, but Liverpool scored 33 at home.
Also, Chelsea scored 25 at home.

      Norwich conceded 11 at home
      Arsenal conceded 15 away
      Newcastle 16 away.

It's not that straight forward either, there are too many variables, players fit, home/away fixtures, strength/ weakness of opposition etc. Liverpool May be at home but the opposition is Arsenal . Norwich May be at home but against the top scoring team etc etc

Can you guys tell me your thought process before you take a hit? Do you have a point system you go through before deciding if the hit is worth it or do you just kneejerk the form players in and not really worry about it as long as people said 'yes' when you asked ' Should I bring in x for a hit?'

After a lot of thinking, I've finally come to the decision, that if I want a short term 3 game punt on a City player, I'd want a striker and not a midfielder.

So going with that, does Willian + Bony ➡ Lallana + Dzeko (-4) sound about right?

The other option is Yaya Toure + Rodriguez. Leaning towards the first personally. Any thoughts lads?

*I Thomassed this from another site but thought it was worth passing on..

-Arsenal have a tremendous record against Liverpool. The Gunners have only lost once in their last 13 Premier League match-ups.

-Newcastle United have only conceded 2 goals in their last 5 away outings.

-Manchester City top the league for away goals with 26 at an average of 2.2. Pellegrini’s men also put 7 pass their Gameweek opposition earlier in the season.

-Stoke City have conceded 25 goals on the road this campaign which ranks third worse in the league behind Fulham and Norwich.

-Everton have only kept 1 clean sheet in 10 while Spurs haven’t failed to score since Tim Sherwood took charge.

-Fulham are averaging 3 away goals conceded against clubs above Manchester United in the league this season.

Bit confused about everyone thinking about playing Puncheon instead of Ozil/Miralles/Eriksen etc. I have to ask: why do you have Puncheon?

For me he is a solid 5th mid to come off the bench if one of my front 7 don't play for some reason. His PPG is worse than all the above mentioned and I do not see enough in the stats to suggest he will outperform these higher priced players this week.

Granted, he might out score one or more of them in any given GW but 100% involvement in not a lot of goals for a scrapping side set up not to lose games does not fill me with confidence. I basically think it would be a massive punt if you put him in over the mentioned players and if it comes off you got lucky; if you played that way every week it fail more often than it would succeed.

And, of course, if it doesn’t come off you will have no sympathy from me when you complain “I left Ozil’s haul on the bench :(" !!!

True but that isn't coming out in points.

Why in God's name did I ever get Bony? Swansea are muck.

Guess I'm going to have to give him one last "hurrah" this week.

My problem is that I wanna get both him and Adam Johnson (possibly) out next week.. Might have to be a hit.

Currently 103 points behind my ML leader (down from 145 behind!). Is it time to start taking risks with captain choice yet?

As I wildcarded after him, I already have a squad with 13 different players to his, but I'm concerned I may be running out of weeks to catch up such a deficit. I keep thinking to play it safe with captains until the last 6 or so GWs, and the DGWs.

Last season I led our ML from GW1, so I'm not used to the strategy of chasing, could do with some advice.

Pick the players that you think will score most points and captain the player you think will score the most for each gameweek.

Quality advise, some people seem to forget this and panicking in the middle of the season captaining Bony, Januzaj etc. trying to chase.

You seem to be catching him by steady methods GDSH, I wouldn't go for the high risk stuff unless you are still 100 behind with perhaps 8GWs to go.
No point throwing away the 40+ points you've gained for two weeks of gambles.

Thanks for the advice. Just need to stay patient for the time being I suppose.
