Spot the Differential – Gameweek 32

We offer up a trio of midfielders for your perusal this morning in our usual pre-deadline search for overlooked alternatives. All three of our selections are caught up in the relegation battle – two have just returned from injury to stake a claim, whilst the other is starting to find his form and offer Fantasy managers a tempting cut-price option:

Michu

Two goals in his first 10 appearances of 2013/14 suggested the Spaniard was suffering from “second season syndrome” after an outstanding first year in the Premier League. With Europa League commitments also to consider after the previous campaign’s cup success, Michu was mainly hampered by the club’s relentless schedule – an ankle injury forced him onto the sidelines in early November before a brief return the following month was curtailed after just two games as a result of knee surgery.

Tentatively eased back into the fold by Garry Monk, the midfielder was afforded his first start in three months on Tuesday’s draw at the Emirates before making way just after the hour mark. With the Swans sitting just five points clear of the drop zone, the former Rayo Vallecano man has the chance to atone for his time on the sidelines and help steer his side to safety over the next few matches.

Michu has a home clash against Norwich this weekend and with Hull, Newcastle, Villa and Sunderland all still to follow, has a favourable run-in to boost his Fantasy prospects. After his 18-goal exploits last time around, he’s far from cheap at 8.4 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 8.8 in the Sky Sports game and 4.5 in the Sun Dream Team, but if Monk’s side can continue the attacking form which has harvested three goals against Liverpool and two against Everton and Arsenal, a match-fit Michu will surely have a part to play.

Jordan Mutch

Two goals and an assist against Liverpool last weekend have already earned the Cardiff midfielder a hefty midweek bandwagon. Mutch has risen from 4.4 to 4.6 in FPL as a result of his exploits against the Merseysiders and, with a 16-point Gameweek 31 return his second double-figure haul in the last three league matches, he’s shaping up as a key figure in the Bluebirds’ bid to beat the drop.

Whilst the likes of Peter Whittingham, Craig Noone and even Wilfried Zaha have piqued our interest over the course of the campaign, Mutch’s recent displays have cemented his spot as the man most likely in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s midfield. Now up to six goals and six assists in 19 league starts, his weekend endeavours will surely have earned him a fourth successive start under the Norwegian as the Welsh outfit make their way to fellow-strugglers West Brom.

With Palace, Stoke and Sunderland in the subsequent four, Mutch – priced at 4.1 in the Sky Sports game and 1.5 in the Sun Dream Team – has the schedule to maintain his recent showings and boost his side’s survival prospects.

Stephane Sessegnon

The Baggies midfielder made an instant impact on his first start under new manager Pepe Mel in Gameweek 30. Finally recovered from a groin injury, Sessegnon was handed a role alongside Victor Anichebe up front in West Brom’s Gameweek 30 trip to Swansea and responded with a goal and couple of bonus – serving up his first double-figure return of the season.

A change in formation last weekend saw the Benin international move to the tip of a midfield diamond behind Anichebe and Thievy in a disappointing defeat at Hull. With his side failing to find the net at the KC, Mel may once again alter his formation – with Anichebe struggling to shake off a hamstring injury, Sessegnon may even be shifted back up front for tomorrow’s trip to Cardiff.

With a schedule which includes Norwich, West Ham, Sunderland and Stoke in the final seven rounds of matches, including a double Gameweek 37, Sessegnon (6.4 in FPL, 6.7 in the Sky Sports game and 3.5 in the Sun Dream Team) may yet rediscover the form which made him such a mid-price favourite in his final two seasons on Wearside.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Don't sell Hazard + your 5th mid for Nolan + Gerrard.

I'd only consider selling Hazard if I was chasing, there were few other options and you're bringing in Schurrle to compensate.

Just listened to the podcast. I'm one of those who has swallowed his pride (is it that really?) and got Yaya Toure this week.

My view of it is that Yaya was trickling along just fine returning (jammy) points but never really enough to make him essential. I always felt I could match his output with an alternative, perhaps Lallana, Silva (eugh) and more recently, Gerrard. But this DGW trolled any manager who didn't have his Yaya and Suarez bases covered.

I'm one of those fantasy managers who like to study the stats and bring in the next big player, the explosion imminent type player. And frankly, this season that tactic has not been viable. As Mark was saying on the podcast the 8 or 9 template players have been super consistent.

So, I've brought in Yaya because this game still takes up so much of my time and thoughts, and it's actually futile trying to compete without him. The DGW did a lot of harm to my ML but I'd rather try and finish second than stubbornly spend the same amount of time on the game but disappear down the swanny.

I get what Mark was saying about keeping the game interesting, get differentials, but ultimately you get more points by getting... players that score more points.

Smart move, I only got him in last week. Took a 16 or hit that paid off!

I wasn't saying avoid players who get the most points, I was lamenting the lack of choice amongst the pool of players who get those big points. For me, this seems worse this season - check the preamble.

Yep, check the preamble in a few minutes. You speak sense but I've still got that "in for a penny, in for a pound" attitude. I may yet get Toure but the impact it can have on my end rank is probably pretty insignificant and I'm not sure if I'd just prefer to have some fun with a few gambles now and again.

I see what you're saying Mark, but you don't start the season aiming to do fairly well but to gamble on a few less obvious players. I presume you start the season trying to win :). In which case, it becomes a decision of recognising which players you didn't foresee doing well you must now bring in to allow you to continue to compete?

If you fail to bring in these bandwagons then why continue to spend so much time on the game for 'small wins'? I think it is stubbornness in a way. I've realised it is with me anyway.

I still fancy my chances of beating my ML rivals, but on a level playing field where the big point snorers are neutralised. It's too late this season but hopefully, lesson learnt.

Failure to miss one bandwagon often gives you more opportunity to jump on the next in that position - don't get Toure, then have the cash to get Walcott as an alternative etc.

This season, we've had two or three major bandwagons and nothing else has emerged. If you missed Ramsey, Toure and Suarez and your rival got them ahead of you, you were really up against it. Had Walcott and Michu remained fit, along with RvP and Aguero, I think the season would have been far more interesting because those lagging behind would have had some hope of getting heavy hitting differentials over those above them. That's not really been possible - you have to have the same big scoring players and hope you can make up ground with the rest.

It's not been about identifying the best players necessarily, but how quickly you were able to get them in.

But is it pride? At what point does a flash in the pan become a bandwagon then go to essential status? The earlier you jump onboard (my ML leader btw), you're accused of chasing last weeks points, then you're following the herd.

I genuinely think it's more a superiority complex thing ... manager's without Yaya Toure think they can compete without him.. doing it different. They like to be different and spot the bandwagons before others, then even jump off before others (as I did with Ramsey a week before he got injured, purely based on fixtures!).

It is a kind of mental challenge thing rather than outright wanting to win. Of course, it feels all the more sweeter if you play this way AND win 🙂

for the sake of doing well in the game its foolish in a way. I ignored the Ramsey thing at the start of the season even though he was killing me, The same with YaYa. Had I not been so stubborn I may well have been flying high by now as I have gad a decent run in the past few months.

the silly thing is I actually considered Ramsey right at the start because of his price but thought he was too cheap and wouldn't be a good option. lol

I don't know if you will ever see this twisty but the likes of yaya and hazard should never be considered essential status as they are not really viable capt choices (I know hazard posed a couple of good capt weeks for his owners when suarez was a poor option but he is running at under 50% for positive points in games this season I.e. assist/goal/bonus).

Suarez on the other hand is running a massive ppg average and everyone has him capt most weeks = essential.

The other two are all about value i'm as you can easily spend the cash saved with cheaper mids on upgrades elsewhere and still have a chance of competing imo

Both haz and yaya have been very fortunate to do as well as they have this year imo but there are always a couple of players like that every year. I brought in yaya for the double once I knew kun was out as I wanted to cover his penalty potential but without pens I wouldn't bother with him tbh

Yeah, it's a funny one. Maybe the trick is to get Yaya and Suarez before anyone else then you get the satisfaction from picking them rather than following the herd!
