The Digest – Gameweek 32

Our final assessment of Gameweek 32 examines United’s in-form frontman and the numerous attacking options that have helped Everton to a five-match winning run and considers how much impact the upcoming double Gameweek 34 will have on our transfer plans:

THE PLAYER

After Robin van Persie was sidelined with a knee injury sustained in last month’s Champions League win over Olympiacos, Wayne Rooney’s contribution was more vital than ever for Manchester United. His two braces in the subsequent three league games makes it six goals in the last six for Rooney, and three double-figure Fantasy Premier League (FPL) returns in the last five suggests he is back on form after returning from injury.

Rooney’s move to spearhead the United attack has triggered an upturn in his form and points returns and has also allowed Juan Mata to tentatively move back onto Fantasy radars after the Spaniard delivered his first goal for the club, along with an assist and two bonus points, in last weekend’s 4-1 win over Villa.

Granted, a blank Gameweek 34 will press pause on many a manager’s plans but Rooney’s current exploits suggest he could be set to play a major part in the run-in. With Van Persie still out for a number of weeks, Sergio Aguero keen not to rush his latest comeback from injury and the Liverpool double-up option a little less enticing with City and Chelsea on the horizon, Daniel Sturridge owners may also be contemplating a move for the United frontman in the near-future.

Currently sitting in just 14% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) teams, Rooney proved a real differential last weekend, and with a home clash against Norwich preceding a pair of Old Trafford matches in Gameweek 37, as Sunderland and Hull both pay visit, major investment looks on the cards before the campaign is out. For all their toils this term, last weekend’s convincing win over Villa suggests David Moyes’ side can still offer us viable Fantasy options over these last few matches, and with spot-kick duties also in hand due to Van Persie’s absence, Rooney’s flourishing form looks set to ease the pressure on his under-fire boss as Moyes seeks a silver lining on what has been a cloudy first season at the helm.

THE TEAM

Everton made it five wins in a row with their victory over Fulham last weekend, and are now looking the most likely contenders to oust Arsenal from the fourth Champions League place. Following a difficult period that saw them lose to rivals Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham in quick succession, the Toffees have rediscovered their early-season attacking form and embarked on a run of results that has seen Fantasy returns spread around a number of talented options.

Despite losing Steven Pienaar to injury, Roberto Martinez still has Aiden McGeady, Kevin Mirallas, Steven Naismith, Leon Osman, Ross Barkley and Gerard Deulofeu as options, with all six picking up game time and Fantasy points in recent matches. Admittedly, the Toffees boss warned us of his intentions to rotate the three positions behind Romelu Lukaku but the situation is, nonetheless, frustrating for Fantasy managers – compounded by the big Belgian’s inconsistency to deliver the goods up top.

Barkley’s calf injury withdrawal at Craven Cottage is a worry for his 20% FPL owners, though Martinez has plenty of alternatives should the youngster be forced onto the sidelines. As shown in Sunday’s win over Fulham, when all three subs climbed off the bench to score or assist in a 3-1 win, the rotation policy is working well for the Toffees boss and only looks set to continue. Kevin Mirallas’ owners remain frustrated by the Belgian’s lack of guaranteed starts yet he has still popped up with a goal and two assists over the last three matches, taking his points tally to 120 – just three behind David Silva, for example.

Regardless, few will be willing to bring in the midfielder at this point – Lukaku and the likes of Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman look the safest targets as the Toffees brace themselves for an upcoming double Gameweek 34 which pits them against Palace and Sunderland. With home matches against United and City and a trip to Southampton directly after the double, though, many will be looking to offload from Gameweek 35.

Despite the testing fixtures, Martinez’ men, who have already beaten Chelsea and United this season, have the momentum to secure the points and deliver a European spot for next term – great for the Toffees supporters, but from a Fantasy perspective, the recent rotation policy looks ominous for next season already.

THE TALKING POINT

For many Fantasy managers, the strong returns achieved in double Gameweek 31 immediately appeared to justify the strategy to restructure our squads and cash in on a schedule which saw 10 Premier League teams play twice.

As many Fantasy teams were amended to feature the maximum compliment of players with a double fixture, some of this season’s most consistent performers (such as Chelsea’s Eden Hazard) were benched or even shipped out completely to make way. Adam Lallana, for example, was subject to 160,000 transfers out in advance of Gameweek 31, whilst many also parted company with the midfielder’s Southampton team-mates Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez to load up on the doubles. The Saints’ in-form trio have made many regret that decision over the last two fixtures as Mauricio Pochettino’s side notched twice at Tottenham before putting four past Newcastle last Saturday, with all three earning 10+ point hauls in the Magpies rout.

As we turn our attentions to the remaining double Gameweeks, Southampton’s exploits have served a timely reminder that sometimes we can get carried away by the potential offered up by those teams with doubles, and take our eye off the long-term.

Certainly, Man City, with a pair of doubles and some fine fixtures, surely merit the full three-player quota ahead of Gameweek 34. As mentioned above, aside from Lukaku, Everton’s attacking options look no more than a punt, judging by their manager’s recent rotation policy, whilst Baines and Coleman have mainly been relying on attacking returns from the back after a run of just two clean sheets in ten.

Sunderland’s appeal looks limited – until Gameweek 36, at least. Adam Johnson owners will be hoping his goal off the bench against West Ham last night can earn him a first-team reprieve, but with trips to Spurs and Chelsea on either side of a double Gameweek 34 against Everton and City, it’s difficult to justify immediate investment. Palace will be looking to push on from their impressive win over Chelsea, but with goals hard to come by, we’re likely to be relying on defensive points against Villa and Everton – furthermore, the Eagles still have City and Liverpool to play at home, with their options back on our benches for those fixtures.

After the high of Gameweek 31, the upcoming double looks far less enticing a prospect this time round. Indeed, those who loaded up on City and Everton last time around will already have their players in place – shopping lists are likely to be minimal, then, with many instead restructuring their side with one eye on the remaining strength of schedule and double Gameweek 37, where Rooney and, potentially, a fit-again Aguero, could be poised to wreak havoc.

I assume most expect Aguero to sit out vs. Southampton, but what are your projections for his total minutes over the double?

    I'm going to say 120

      90-120

Most players don't do well immediately following long-ish injury. One of the few exceptions was Kun in that Cup game where he scored in the first minute but it was versus Blackburn or someone wasn't it?

I talk myself out of it with cold logic every day, but every day I come back to the sheer romance of blitzing my ML rivals with a Kun show. And the fixtures are fabulous.

I should be in a position to do it without a hit.

Either Mirallas > Mutch or Cahill > Chester (would buy Cahill back for Coleman the very next week, costing myself 0.3 in the process) would pay for Studge > Kun.

Long term I'd rather drop Lukaku than Studge, but DGW versus City game.

Sounds good to me. Agree with you there, could be short sighted of us to drop Sturridge based on one extra game for Lukaku, but I have some ground to make up so need to go for it!

i understand bayern are the best in the world but...

arsenal dominated them for 40 minutes could have and should have scored three before the red card, even then they only scored 2 with one from distance. Then we held them at the allianz and could have scored a winner, they are getatable.

Arsenal played united twice this season scored 0 conceeded 1.... if arsenal can almost take bayern united can surprise a few tonight with maybe a draw.

I of course like most of you expect united to lose, but I wouldn't rule them out.

    I am unbiased arsenal fan.

True. But ifs and maybes are not the same as results. Tell me this, are you a Gunners supporter who refers to Giroud as Donkey ? I think he!s been great for ye this season. Not great in every game but he's way better than last season and if he improves the same amount next season will be one of the top PL strikers.

not at all! he scored 18 goals and assisted 17 last season... this he has scored almost as many if not more.
He is a great player, industrious, hard working, puts his shift in, his hold up play, and linking with the midfield is amazing... sure he struggles with a finish at times, or his decision making can be a bit off, but i have nothing but admiration for the guy.

The problem is that there is 15-20 strikers in the league that would have scored more if they played 90 minutes every game as a striker for freaking Arsenal

    Mannone
    Coleman, Zabaleta, Chester
    Hazard, Yaya, Gerrard, Mirallas
    Suarez, Sturridge, Lukaku

    (Kelvin Davis, Koren, Burner, Ward)

2 FT's, £0.1m in the bank (£0.1m short of doing Gerrard -> Silva)

I haven't really got a clue what to do here. I'd like Kun next week though if he's fit as I'm cashing a lead. Which do you think is the best move here?

    A) Gerrard -> Mutch/Eriksen/AJ/Nasri
    B) Sturridge -> Dzeko
    C) Replace Koren
    D) Something else
    E) Give up and go home

The 3rd striker spot has been an absolute curse for me. Never managed to get any players in for a haul, always missed out on them or sold them right before a haul.

The latest addition is this weeks Carroll -> Bony. Carroll 4 points over the double and gets triple that when I sell him for a single gwk.

Apologies for the mini rant, sick of this season. By far the most frustrating one iv had

    Anyway..carry on!

    Couple Bits of input
    1. I keep having dreams Lallana will score a hatrick on saturday- now thats out of the way
    2. I think the musts for gw34 are:
    One of Coleman/Baines
    One of Yaya/Silva

The rest you can makeup, however filling your 3 man city slots is advised
I think rooney is a great option on the homestretch and this will probably mean keeping just suaez over sturridge
Eriksen is a good option considering there fixtures and there free willing nature
Possible differential could be doubling up on city defense

Which 3 teams do we think are going down?

Think they can beat CRY, STO, sun, new.. so they have a pretty ok chance in my opinion. They know how to score at least whilst the other teams are struggling to find the net.
I also think they have a chance at home to Chelsea in the last game of the season if Chelsea has nothing to play for that match (Secured 3rd can't get 2nd)

All these concerns over Aguero + game time, i was starting to wonder whether i was mad to stick with my hopes to bring him in.

So just had a look at his (basic) FPL stats:
15 starts, 2 appearances from the bench
    17 goals, 9 assists
    19 bonus points
    PPG: 7.7

Even he doesnt make SOT or liv...his fixtures till the end of the season read:

    SUN
    WBA
    cpl
    eve
    AVL
    WHM

If he's fit i want him.

        how are you guaranteeing that?

2 double GWs (maybe) and home fixtures (where he tends to score better) that could be:
        SUN
        WBA
        AVL
        WBA

Yeah if he's fit, which we probably won't know untill after gw34 has started. I'll go with this team after gw34:

      Yaya Mata Hazard Eriksen Sterling

      Rooney Suarez Aguero

      if Aguero is fit.

So... in thinking of finally deciding on a team to support!

I used to like Everton purely because of Timmy Cahill, being an Aussie and all, but beyond this they have a good community feel and carry that underdog tag which we quite like. Plus Leon Osman once won me my mini league a few years ago as an outrageous punt.

And Martinez is a straight shooting all round good manager!

Some very helpful posts around today so might push my luck and ask whether Mata - Nasri is a good idea for my 'use it or lose it' transfer this week.

Team is: Mannone, Olsson, Baines, Terry, Hazard, Yaya, Johnson, Mata, Sturridge, Suarez, Lukaku (Boruc, Noone, Ward, Demel).

The only other transfer I was contemplating was Boruc - Gazzinga/Harper to free up funds for Sturridge - Aguero.

if Aguero does come back next week then Nasri may not start, he often makes way when KUN is fit.... be wary.... ive gone for Silva instead for this reason (on top of YAYA)

I like the 2nd transfer if it will allow KUN next week...

Definitely see where you're coming from there and that's good advice cheers. Just for me Mata - Silva doesn't allow Sturridge - Aguero unless I downgrade e.g. Terry.

Certainly banking an extra 0.8m is going to come in useful and Mata for this week isn't a disaster given how awful Newcastle are.

If Aguero didn't come back I could then do Mata and Demel to Nasri and Demi

See where you're coming from, slighlty loathe to bench, captain or sell Baines - made a conscious decision to bring him in on the WC for the explosiveness.

Mata to Mutch could work but out of 3 FTs really do want 2 of them to be DGW and I wouldn't physically be able to spend the money... I guess that would allow Olsson to Coleman and Sturridge to Aguero...

I don't think Nasri will outscore Mata(new) this week.. but I see your problem with finding a transfer worth doing..

Mata to Mutch? Massive downgrade in price....massive upgrade in points 😉

I'm liking this idea more and more. It means for the double I have

        Mannone

        Ward Terry Baines Zaba

        Hazard Yaya Johnson

        Aguero Suarez Lukaku.

But if no Aguero I just bring in Coleman for Demel and bench one of Sturridge or Terry.

    Nolan replacements? 7.9 to spend.

Was thinking Lallana, but rival has him and I am chasing.

I have a feeling Puncheon is going to have a great DGW.

Y'all should get him in now and jack his price up 🙂
