The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 33

Our refresh of the Watchlist rankings, offering player recommendations over the next four to six Gameweeks, is rolled out once again this afternoon. Rankings for keepers and defenders are now based on the final six Gameweeks of the season, with Fantasy managers perhaps a little less inclined to change their options at the back. Further up the field, our selections lean more towards the short-term, with individual form also more of an influence:

The Defence

Chelsea duo Petr Cech and John Terry hold steady at the top of the keeper and defender standings, with City’s Joe Hart and Pablo Zabaleta also in the top three of their respective classifications. Manuel Pellegrini’s team have two doubles in the remaining six Gameweeks – five home games (SOU, SUN, WBA, AVL, WHM) and a trip to Palace could easily continue the form that has harvested five clean sheets in six, and, whilst visits to Liverpool and Everton are problematic, they are both part of double Gameweeks (34 and 37), thus lessening their potential downside.

Sunderland duo Vito Mannone and Marcos Alonso remain high in this week’s shake-up due to their upcoming pair of doubles. The fixtures do look tough for Gus Poyet’s side, however, with trips to Spurs and Chelsea on either side of a double Gameweek 34 which pits the Black Cats against Everton and City before the schedule smiles a little kinder in the final three rounds. Mannone’s save points boost his appeal, whilst Alonso is elevated as a result of his role on the left of midfield after Gus Poyet switched to 3-5-2 in the last two games. The Spaniard is preferred to fellow defender Phil Bardsley as the latter is just one yellow away from a two-match suspension.

Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczesny and Per Mertesacker both climb. Granted, the trip to Everton will deter most from investing but following that one, the Gunners have three excellent home fixtures (WHM, NEW, WBA) supplemented by trips to Hull and Norwich to see out their season and add to their current tally of 13 clean sheets.

Spurs pair Hugo Lloris and Younes Kaboul are elevated as a result of the remaining six fixtures. Granted, Tim Sherwood’s side have hardly shown much form of late but with Sunderland, Fulham and Villa all yet to visit the Lane, in addition to trips to West Brom, Stoke and West Ham, the north London side may yet produce the points over the run-in. Jan Vertonghen would normally be our first-choice option but we’ve omitted the Belgian after he was forced off with an ankle injury early on during Sunday’s loss at Liverpool.

Having kept out Chelsea last weekend, Palace pair Julian Speroni and Joel Ward remain in our shake-up ahead of a schedule which sees them face Cardiff and West Ham in the next three, with a double Gameweek 34 against Villa and Everton also sandwiched in between.

With games against Fulham, Palace, Southampton and Swansea preceding a double Gameweek 37, Villa’s Brad Guzan and Ron Vlaar offer budget-friendly options at the back. Cardiff duo David Marshall and Steven Caulker have Palace, Stoke and Sunderland in their next three – the latter notched his fifth goal of the season last weekend and remains a real menace in the opposition box regardless of opponent.

Midfield

Eden Hazard and Yaya Toure stay first and second respectively, though with two pairs of doubles still to follow, the Ivorian is set to overtake Chelsea’s 14-goal wide man in the next week or so. David Silva tucks in just behind the pair. The Spaniard’s opener at the Emirates last weekend took his tally to two goals and a pair of assists in the last four – whilst Hazard and Toure are owned by 40% or more Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, Silva’s 8% ownership highlights his differential appeal.

Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen takes a major step up the rankings. The Dane’s 18-point return against Southampton in Gameweek 31 summed up his capabilities and he looks to have cemented his starting role for the run-in – coming in at just 6.5, and sitting in 3% of FPL sides, that above-mentioned schedule affords him plenty of chances to plunder the points.

Adam Johnson also comes in at 6.5 but, as we’ve seen over Sunderland’s last two matches, he’s by no means a certainty to start. Johnson’s goal and assist off the bench in those fixtures surely bode well for his role in next Monday’s trip to Tottenham and with two doubles still to follow, Gus Poyet can ill-afford to further neglect a player who has scored or assisted 10 of his side’s 14 goals from January 1 onwards.

With three sets of double figures in his last four, Cardiff’s 4.6-priced Jordan Mutch more than merits our attentions as a red-hot budget option. The Bluebirds have scored three goals in all but one of their last four league fixtures and Mutch squares up to Palace, Stoke, Sunderland and Newcastle’s defences in the next five.

Villa’s Fabian Delph and Fulham wide man Ashkan Dejagah are another couple of options in the sub-5.0 bracket. Delph has a goal, two assists and five bonus points in the last four, whilst Dejagah has struck three times in the last six for Felix Magath’s basement-dwellers. With Norwich, Hull and Palace all yet to travel to Craven Cottage, the schedule smiles kindly on the Iran international.

Forwards

Up front, Luis Suarez’ relentless form ensures he retains his spot at the summit, though Liverpool team-mate Daniel Sturridge drops down to third. The latter has now notched just twice in the last five, and with the Reds set to play City and Chelsea in the next four, many owners who currently hold both may be looking to part company with Sturridge.

City’s Edin Dzeko shifts into second spot. With Sergio Aguero admitting only yesterday he is determined to be cautious with his latest comeback for fear of blowing his chances in this summer’s World Cup, the big Bosnian looks set to retain his starting  for the time being. We’ll reassess the landscape when Aguero finally finds his way out the Etihad treatment room, but for now, Dzeko, at just 6.9 and with three goals and an assist in his last three appearances, has started delivering consistently in the lone forward role.

Romelu Lukaku returned a blank at Fulham last weekend, but with three goals and an assist in his last five, the Everton forward is still ticking over nicely since returning from injury. Whilst Roberto Martinez rotates the three attacking midfield positions, the Belgian looks an assured starter up top ahead of the Toffees’ double Gameweek 34 against Palace and Sunderland.

Four goals in three appearances since Robin van Persie picked up a knee injury sums up Wayne Rooney’s current form. The upcoming blank Gameweek 34 curtails his immediate appeal but the United frontman still remains firmly in the picture – a home game against Norwich precedes a pair of Old Trafford matches in Gameweek 37 against Sunderland and Hull which will bring Rooney into many a manager’s squad before the season is over.

Further down, Christian Benteke heads a queue of mid-price options with form and fixtures on their sides. The Villa frontman has notched three times in four and faces Fulham, Palace and Swansea prior to a double in Gameweek 37, whilst Tottenham’s Emmanuel Adebayor is back in training ahead of his side’s favourable final six fixtures. Having missed the last two through injury, he’s plummeted in price from 8.6 to 7.7 and is now owned by less than 5% of FPL managers but is expected back in time of Monday evening’s home encounter with struggling Sunderland.

I think this could be one of the bigger factors in how people's season ends.

If you get him and he does well, we could be looking at a big final surge in OR. If he fails we'll be rushing to redistribute cash - but i'm optimistic and i don't see any one else with the capabilities that he has to effect my OR.

You don't win anything unless you're #1. Just feel the FFS obsession over ranking is a tad too much.

I'd like to see the day when we play the game for the heck of it. Or for the spirit of football. Or to win head-to-head competitions. Or simply to win money (that happens now too I spose) in a league. But care feck all about overall rank.

If I keep up the level of progression I've made over the last 3 seasons then #1 is a possibility in a few years 😉

It's mainly about mini leagues for me, but I've won most of my important ones already over 100 points ahead) so now its overall ranking to keep me motivated 🙂

You don't have to finish first to have achieved something.

If you look to better your overall rank, and enjoy the challenges along the way, then you take something from the competition.

I think its ridiculously stubborn that Hazard is top of the watchlist over Yaya 😛

Yaya has 2 more games than him and has scored far better in recent weeks...
It doesn't matter if you still cling on to the whole "he can't keep it up" dribble after 32 gameweeks, the truth is that Yaya has been a better option than Hazard for weeks.

But the watchlist also takes into account what the other options are in that area. So if you want to get a piece of the Man City attack you could also go for Dzeko/Aguero/Silva/Nasri. If you want to have a Chelsea attacker it's Hazard or don't bother - that gives him a boost.

    Aguero is such a Dilemma.

It seems like most on here are looking to fill their third Man City spot next week and are holding off from getting Silva/Demichelis because of Kun. But what's the alternative.

Silva's a great choice. Great form, Great fixtures. Plus there aren't too may other midfield choices at the moment. Gerrard, Lallana and Mutch have all been in form but their fixtures look very hit and miss so playing them in the right games will be difficult. Then with AJ the DGW has come too soon for us to know if he'll play anywhere near 180 mintues and the likes of Mirallas and Eriksen are still really just punts with their gametime and fluctuating form.
Silva could also be taken out for the last three/four weeks for a returning Rambo or AJ for those last sweet fixtures to make the space and funds for Aguero if necessary.

Also, there are loads of great striker options: SRS are all over it at the moment, Lukaku has an impending double, Eto'o, Ade or Remy will surely be fired up for their returns and the last few games, whilst Bony Benteke and Carroll are all putting on great shows for our third striker spots.

Kun's already been injured twice in the last few months and is clearly looking to hold off for the World Cup. It seems unlikely then that he will play for 90 minutes in either of the DGW games even if he makes a brief appearance this week against Southampton.

Verdict: Forget Aguero. For now at least!

...It's Kun, he could play 90 minutes over the DGW and get 3 goals.

It's true he's capable, we know that too well on here. But it's just not very likely is it. He's said he's looking to be cautious in his return, not like before when he's been chomping at the bit. It doesn't feel the same this time.

He will want to build up a bit of form before the WC however.. There's points to be made on both sides, it really just comes down to whether people have the balls to back him or not.

I, like most I would assume, do not have the balls 😀

I'll be waiting for GW35 unless he does something against saints.

I agree Irish. At any point after his return though it will be possible to get him in, especially as most of us are carrying 2FTs and aren't sure what to do with the second yet. I just can't see his return being as explosive as he's come out in the press saying it won't be. Worth the wait I feel.

He's been out for a while. At best he'll be on bench at when'd and start vs Liverpool, but then I can't see him being risked again at home to s'land.

Alternatively he doesn't feature this when'd, is on bench vs Liverpool and starts vs s'land where he'd prob get max 60mins.

I really want him but just doesn't seem worth it at this stage. I already have Dzeko, yaya, silva so think will stick to that for this double then get Aguero once he's fully up and running.

I'll just wait 'til after the So'ton game. If it looks like Aguero will play a big part in the DGW, I'll get him. If not, I'll get Demichelis. Already have Yaya and Silva.

City's fixtures throughout the season are so unbelievably tasty, and I'd rather want Aguero than Demichelis for that.

was up for discussion earlier when the story broke.

Pretty big news, but Barca have players coming through La Masia all the time and we are only really talking about one season having to stick with the likes of Messi, Neymar, Pedro, Sanchez, Deulofeu, Tello as attacking options.

Xavi, Cesc, Iniesta, Busquets, Sergi Roberto etc in MF aint exactly an accident waiting to happen and the defence is still relatively young - at least a few seasons left in the eldest aside from Puyol.

Its the GK spot that i think they'll have an issue with, but the way they play they could just ask Puyol to stay on another season between the sticks.

They have big problems at CB too, Puyol has barely played a game this season and is retiring, Pique is out for at least a month.

They needed to sign a CB before any of this happened. Bartra and Masherano isnt gonna win them the league for sure.

Worst case, Busquets can drop to CB. He began as a CB before Guardiola moved him into MF when he headed up La Masia.

Not ideal, but its not the end of the world. They'll finish top 3 and get CL football without spending a bean.

Its a blow to Barca and they'll have to rely on youngsters for a year (but they have quality youngsters) but they'll survive it. Might give Madrid the chance to edge ahead of them though 😀

Imagine, with a transfer kitty of around £80m per season across the two windows, they'd be able to go into the following season with a cock-out approach to signing players.

They can survive a season without, get CL football and get the likes of Sergi Roberto a full season. The following year, £150m or so in the kitty, a couple of worldies and they're back in business.

Yep, they'd be back in business then, and they'll survive this easily, but if they finish 3rd and their team declines as a superpower, and they don't get their annual Champions League bonus revenue (unless they still managed to get to the quarters/semis), then one of the two Madrid sides will probably win the league, gain more revenue from CL, have first choice on players that Barca would otherwise be looking at, and develop more as a team.

If Madrid improve and Barca regress, then no matter who Barca buy, they're going to find it tough to catch up immediately, a year out of the market when they already have an old and thin squad could be quite damaging.

Not a fan of making transfer plans to far in advance as somone is bound to get injured/suspended just when you least expect it.

Other than that, seems a fair enough plan of action. Not sure Arnautovic can be relied on but he is good value.

It is staggering that Moyes signed him though for that money. There are several other Everton players who are far better that would strengthen the side and he could probably have got for less.

It is impressive that he spent £28m on a midfielder that has actually worsened the Utd midfield.

        haha, love it.

Difference is, I now have an extra £10m or so compared with last time around. The rest of my team will be decent too

Seems like Aguero is miffing everyone not just me! I'm up to 7,000 place now which is new territory:

    Marshall (Manone)
    Coleman Zabaleta Cahill (Ward Smalling)
    Hazard Yaya Silva Puncheon (Sterling)
    Suarez Sturridge Lukaku

    1. Best 3rd option for Everton double - Baines OR Barkley?

    2. I plan to have Sturridge/Silva > Aguero/Johnson IF Aguero makes the bench this weekend...good idea, or stick with Silva? Cheers folks

      1) I'm debating whether to go with 3 Everton - you'll want to unload 1 or 2 from GW35. But Baines could score big in DGW ... so definitely Baines then if you can afford
      2) THat's a tricky one , I'd say stick.

    Guys, Can you help?

I'm struggling to beat off my rivals in my works mini league - my main rival has been breathing down my neck for the last 12 weeks and it's been very tight although I think she may of made a couple of mistakes recently giving me a slight edge in points (26) - can you have a look my team and provide a bit of advice for the next couple of GW's: -

My Team (1FT, and 5.3M in the bank)
    Boruc McGregor
    Cahill Ward Olsson Distin Coleman
Yaya Touré Hazard Gerrard Lallana Mutch
    Dzeko Lukaku Suárez

Main Rival (already taken 1 transfer this week and I think she may of got Rooney in for Giroud, although may also have replaced Barkley, Nolan, Schurrle, or Smalling)
    Hart Kelvin Davis
    Zabaleta Azpilicueta Mertesacker Evra Smalling
Yaya Touré Hazard Schürrle Barkley Nolan
    Sturridge Suárez Giroud

    Many Thanks

Hmm. Your team looks solid. I'd hold the transfer and play mutch over lallana this week. 3-4-3.

If you are struggling to beat off your rivals, I would suggest using some sort of lubricant. Maybe hand cream.

I don't think lubricant will help him beat off his female rival 😉

I have him but I've had him for 4 or 5 weeks now.
Benched him both times he scored.
Ya he looks like a good option but wouldn't be taking a hit to get him in.

i'd definitely start him, taking Gerrard out as this suspension leaves the risk of him being benched, it is a risk though as I reckon liverpool will hammer....errrr West Ham but i have studge and suarez cover already....

No hit required....then I have 5 mil in the bank for transfers next week....

i looked at it, thinking if they score, which they probably have to, then he should be involved. my only concern was having him after that when you may need some one else. planning to ship someone in the future never seems to work out.
so probably going with eriksen for long term fixtures

Like most I want a third Man City player in next week.

      I'm 0.1 short of Gerrard->Silva and 2.0 short for Sturridge->Aguero. 2FT.

      This week should I do:

      A) Ward->Dann, saving 0.2
      Next week: Gerrard to Silva.

      B) Gerrard->Delph (FUL, 1Goal+2Assists in his last four, later DGW)
Next week: Mutch->Silva OR Sturridge->Aguero. I won't play mutch again after this week.

      Thanks
