Scout Notes – Gameweek 36 – Sunday

Yaya Toure grabs a goal and assist upon his return from a groin injury as City end Palace’s winning run. A much-changed Chelsea blow the title race wide open with a resilient rearguard display at Anfield, whilst Connor Wickham bags a brace as Sunderland sweep aside Cardiff to climb out of the bottom three:

Toure Back in the Points
The Ivorian played a part in both City’s goals as Manuel Pellegrini’s side eased past Palace at Selhurst Park. Sold by over 500, 000 Fantasy Premier League managers after limping out of the first match of City’s double Gameweek 34, Toure’s immediate impact in yesterday’s vital win is set to get the bandwagon back underway ahead of next week’s pair of fixtures. Now down to 10.1, he faces Everton and Villa before a final day home encounter with West Ham, and with City’s bid for the title now firmly back in their own hands, we can expect Pellegrini to go on the attack as he looks to overhaul Liverpool at the summit.

Samir Nasri also chipped in with an assist to keep his tally ticking over. The Frenchman now has two goals and four assists in his last eight, but despite his consistent displays, some owners may still be eyeing up a swap for Toure – the latter’s 31-point haul in double Gameweek 31 is a reminder of his capabilities, whilst Nasri, by comparison, has managed just two sets of double figures all season.

Pellegrini Keeps Faith in a 4-4-2
Manuel Pellegrini continued with a two-man frontline for the trip to Selhurst Park as City ended the hosts’ five-match winning run. Edin Dzeko was handed the chance to partner Sergio Aguero once again, and whilst the latter drew a rare blank before being withdrawn on 78 minutes, the Bosnian justified his manager’s decision by scoring for the first time in four appearances. With Alvaro Negredo still struggling for form, Dzeko has now started each of the last two alongside Aguero and seems likely to retain his start for the double – priced at just 7.1, his 15% of owners may be persuaded to hold after yesterday’s impressive showing, though there’s no doubt Aguero and Toure will be the two main names on shopping lists this week.

Wickham the Black Cats’ Talisman
A brace from Connor Wickham took his tally to five goals in the last three Gameweeks as Sunderland’s great escape picked up pace. With an assist and maximum bonus also accrued in the 4-0 win over Cardiff, Wickham has now delivered 37 points in his last trio of appearances, and with a price tag of just 4.6, his exploits look certain to earn him plenty of new owners before next weekend’s double Gameweek deadline. Granted, the weekend trip to United is far from straightforward, but with a midweek home clash against West Brom and a Stadium of Light showdown against Swansea on the final day of the season, Wickham looks likely to play a major part in the last few fixtures for Gus Poyet’s side.

Borini and Giaccherini also in the Points
The Italian duo both chipped in with a goal and assist apiece in the rout. Borini benefitted from penalty duties for the second match in succession, having also slotted home a spot-kick in the win at Chelsea – priced at 6.2 and fielded on the left, though, he remains less likely to pick up new owners due to Wickham’s cheaper price tag and central role. Giaccherini’s contribution off the bench may be somewhat disconcerting for Adam Johnson owners ahead of the double, however. The latter served up a fifth successive blank yesterday, whilst Giacherrini has now produced a goal and three assists in three brief sub appearances – his displays may just persuade Poyet he is worthy of a starting berth, given Johnson’s comparative lack of form.

Bardsley on the Bench
Suspended for the previous two matches, the Black Cats full-back seems to have fallen down the pecking order after being handed a spot on the bench yesterday. Poyet opted for an unchanged defence and retained Santiago Vergini on the right of the back-four as Sunderland earned a first clean sheet since Gameweek 30. With an average of 4.6 points per game, Vito Mannone remains the best bet for those looking to invest in the Black Cats’ backline ahead of the double, though Marcos Alonso’s attacking threat is also an option – the 4.5-priced Spaniard looks the likeliest defender to deliver the points in light of Bardsley’s omission.

Jose Rings the Changes as Blues Shock Anfield
Earlier in the week, the Chelsea boss threatened to make sweeping changes to his starting XI for yesterday’s clash, and he was true to his word. With the second leg of the Champions League semi-final clash against Atletico Madrid now only two days away, Jose Mourinho made seven alterations to his line-up, drafting in previously peripheral figures such as Tomas Kalas, John Obi-Mikel and Ashley Cole in a 4-3-3 formation. Despite the loss of Petr Cech and John Terry to injury, Mourinho dropped Gary Cahill to the bench yet still managed to defy the odds with a counter-attacking masterclass as Chelsea served up their seventeenth shut-out of the season. Those holding the Blues main assets will be somewhat worried by yesterday’s line-up, though – if the London club progress to the Champions League Final, Mourinho – whose side now see out the season with games against Norwich and Cardiff – could well be set to continue with his rotation policy in light of yesterday’s success.

Liverpool Stutter as Sturridge Returns
The Reds’ 11-match winning streak came crashing to an end as Luis Suarez and co failed to break down the Chelsea defensive wall. Cahill’s late introduction saw Mourinho switch to a five-man backline, and with no way through, Liverpool’s title chances were dealt a huge blow as Demba Ba and former Brendan Rodgers target Willian grabbed the goals. Daniel Sturridge was fit enough only for a second-half sub role after a recovering from a recent hamstring problem and the England star looks likely to return to the starting line-up for next weekend’s crucial trip to Selhurst Park – a move to the midfield diamond looks on the cards as the Merseysiders attempt to re-establish their position at the summit after yesterday’s morale-sapping display.

All those who are bringing in Mata; aren't you concerned that he was on the bench for the first 60 mins, and RVP back won't exactly improve his game time?

Judging by Saturday's game, that should mean 6 goals at LEAST. I'm tempted to bring him in, but I fear Giggs might give Valencia and Young time to keep the width and some speed on the wings.

I think they're more interested in the fact that he scored 2 goals, from the bench.

It was so nice to see Jose pumping his chest for the club he loves. He loves so much that the 1st time he went there was cos they offered more money than us and the 2nd time after he finished bawling like a girl cos Utd didn't want him. He loves them.

Tbf, I'm sure he'd rather have lost yesterday and again on Wednesday, got the sack and become United manager by end of the season. However his ego wouldn't let him lose on purpose, so he said he'd make it look like he's a right Chelski fan

First time this season Iv seen rodgers come out and whine and complain about pety tactics.

Would be amazing if 3 teams could win it on the last day of season.

it's always annoying to see a manager come out with stuff like Brendan yesterday. They always say the post-match presser is a difficult time but when the world is saying they were just taught a tactical lesson, he should just accept it.

Fair enough they want to win "the right way", but they didn't win. So you have to accept you can't always win "the right way". If it's important you to do it right and finish second, I can't really get on board with that.

I just think you have to accept it, if you only want to win the right way, you are going to lose sometimes. It's naive. Arguably to be commended, but if Liverpool had just sat in yesterday they'd be in a much better position than they are now.

Was doing some window shopping and noticed... what a weird, weird season for Man Utd this year. Mata, signed in January, is far far ahead as their highest scoring midfielder in FPL... and he's something like 22nd overall. Followed by Januzaj. If you haven't looked at the scores I doubt you'd have much idea who was 3rd by watching the team. Valencia! Slightly lower than 2pts / game average. I've barely noticed him playing.

    Mata 113
    Januzaj 78
    Valencia 69

And even so they're 7th. Rooney's held the team together all by himself.

I get really cross when everyone talks about how "it's the same team that won the title last year by 11pts".

        It bloody ain't.

This year there's been a dramatic fall off in contribution, for whatever reason, from Rio, Vidic, Giggs.. RVP has played less than half the matches.. Carrick was out for ages... Evra has been really poor.

So a team that overachieved and already had gaping holes and a number of aging players at the end of their career.. couldn't repeat the trick.

        I'm not a Man U fan either.

    It's plausible that if :
Liverpool draw at Palace / beat Newc = 84pts
City draw at Everton / beat Villa , Wham = 84 pts
Chelsea beat Norwich , Cardiff = 84 pts

City win title on goal differance (positive play rewarded)
    Pool 2nd ( SG costly slip )
Chelsea 3rd ( JM negative tactics / lack of goals , strikers )

    An accurate reflection ?

Goal difference over head-to-head is a load of bollocks. Who cares if you can beat Norwich 7-0 when you lose to a rival twice.

It would be easier to take than beating that rival away from home, and then going out and throwing it all away by losing to a team at home that's supposedly worse than every other team in the league.

For example, if we beat Barca, and then went out to lose at home vs Real Betis, to give Barca the title, it would be unforgivable. If we lost to Barca, it would be upsetting, but fair enough, we had the chance and failed, as opposed to having the chance, winning it, and then gifting it right back.

Currently 57pts clear with this defence and 1.3 ITB:

    Boruc Speroni*
    Ivanovic Baines* Coleman* Chester Mariappa

Rival has no DGW defenders at the moment and we share those*. Do I...

    a) stick
    b) Coleman to MCI def for -4
    c) b + Boruc to DDG

In the case of the -4, have you already done a transfer or is it the goalie one you are proposing?

Might be worth it if Baines is out, 57 is pretty good at this stage. I wouldn't worry too much.

Can they afford to sack him? Didn't he get a six year contract starting last season?

I thought it was something more bizarre like an 8 year contract, 2 seasons ago maybe?

Right on the money there Somalion. Strengthens the point though - doesn't matter how badly they do, they can't afford to sack him. I'm sure the Kinnear appointment was an attempt to make him leave of his own accord but it didn't work, the wily old fox 😆

Who to get rid of for a hit? Probably for Evra or Alonso
    Coleman or Baines?

It was going to be Coleman, but Baines yellow flag putting me off that switch....

    Already done Gerrard > Yaya

I would get shot of Baines. Maybe both if you're feeling lucky?

Hmmm -8 seems rash at this stage (even though I know each hit should be considered on it's own)

How many doublers will you have and how many hits did you take getting them? Also which player do you fear not having this GW. I'll start -

    DGW players - 8
    Hits - 1 (-4)
    Player - YayaT

      DGW players - 6
      Hits - 1 (this week)
      Player - RVP

7 or 8 i think (for either a -4 or -8) - which is tied in to part b of the question. I may have to sacrifice one of my existing doublers (Johnson) in order to get in Yaya.

considering Nasri->Yaya for -4 depending on how ramsey goes tonight.

Suarez > Wickham for the DGW (for a hit) and then back to Suarez for the GW38 transfer (no hit)? Just an idea at the mo.

Its weird to see people considering Wickham to outscore Suarez by 4 points 😆

    Pick one:

    A) Nasri/Coleman->Yaya/Alonso -4
    B) Erik->AJ free
    C) Coleman->Jones free
