Moving Target

Moving Target – Dejan Lovren

Having plundered Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana from Southampton earlier this summer, Brendan Rodgers returned to the St Mary’s club for the third time in order to acquire centre-half Dejan Lovren. The 25-year-old arrives at Anfield for a reported £20m and is Rodgers’ fifth signing of the close-season, with Lazar Markovic and Emre Can also making their way to Merseyside:

Discussing the move with the club’s official website, the Reds boss admitted the Croatian’s organisational skills will be crucial for the campaign ahead:

“This is a very important signing for us and I’m delighted it’s completed so Dejan can join up with us on our US tour. I think he’s a really commanding centre-half. I’ve said since we lost Jamie Carragher that we needed that leadership. He’s a player that gives us that. He’s very strong, very commanding, but he can play. I’ve been really impressed with him. I watched him at Lyon, he came into the Premier League with Southampton and I know their players thought he was a big driving force for them and kept them defensively solid. I think he’s a player that can still improve, still develop as he’s in his mid-20s. He’s someone I’m really looking forward to working with.”

The History

A product of the NK Karlovac youth system, Lovren was snapped up by Dinamo Zagreb back in 2004. The defender was handed his senior debut as a 16-year-old a couple of years later before being loaned out to Croatian club Inter Zaprešić – over a couple of seasons, he became a first-team regular and scored once in 50 league outings.

After returning to his parent club for the start of the 2008/09 campaign, Lovren racked up 36 appearances over the next season-and-a-half before being acquired by Lyon midway through the 2009-10 season for €8 million. Spending four years with the Ligue 1 outfit, the Croatian gradually established himself as a key figure at the back and registered two goals and a pair of assists over 72 appearances.

Signed by Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino last June, the centre-half turned out 31 times, scoring on a couple of occasions, with his displays proving fundamental to a run of 15 clean sheets over 2013/14.

On the international scene, Lovren has represented his country from Under-17 to Under-21 level on a total of 55 occasions, scoring six times. The centre-half has also notched twice in 21 appearances for the senior side and played all three group games in the recent World Cup.

The Prospects

Liverpool’s free-scoring side may have earned plenty of plaudits and Fantasy investment after racking up 101 goals in the season gone by, but a series of poor defensive displays ultimately proved their undoing. Rodgers’ side came within two points of the title in spite of a backline that conceded 50 times over 2013/14 – only 14 goals fewer than rivals City (37) and Chelsea (27) combined – and mustered a mere 10 clean sheets over the entire campaign.

Clearly, the Merseysiders need improving at the back if they are to maintain their momentum and Lovren’s acquisition certainly looks a step in the right direction. Having splashed the cash and cited the Croatian’s leadership skills, Rodgers sees the new boy as vital to his plans, and with starts looking guaranteed, it leaves Daniel Agger, Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho vying for the remaining central defensive berth if, as expected, Liverpool operate with a four-man back-line again. Whilst Skrtel’s seven goals last term underline his capabilities in the opponents’ box, there’s every chance that Sakho could be set to partner the new boy, bearing in mind that Rodgers forked out £15m for the Frenchman’s services this time last year.

Priced at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 6.3 in the Sky Sports game, Lovren is already the seventh most popular defender in the former game, with an ownership of 16% and rising. Granted, full-back pair Jon Flanagan and Jose Enrique are cheaper at 5.0 apiece and, if either can nail down a regular role this term, they could provide better value than the Croatian but for now, with Skrtel and 6.0 and both Agger and Sakho at 5.5, Lovren certainly seems the safest option for those willing to take a punt on Rodgers’ defence.

Having conceded 93 goals in two seasons under Rodgers, though, it’s fair to say Liverpool are hardly deserving of such lofty price-tags at the back. Bearing in mind that the likes of Mathieu Debuchy is similarly priced and offers a route into an Arsenal defence with 17 clean sheets last term, and Tottenham new boy Ben Davies, at 5.0, will be hoping to benefit from Pochettino’s installation at Spurs, there could well be better value found elsewhere.

Whilst there’s hope that Lovren’s arrival may just be the catalyst for a turnaround in defensive fortunes for the Mersysiders, trips to City and Spurs in the first three fixtures may convince many to steer clear initially. One look at the schedule from Gameweek 4, when Liverpool face four kind home matches (AVL, EVE, WBA, HUL) and trips to West Ham and QPR in the subsequent six, suggests that if Lovren’s installation makes the difference, we could start to reconsider Liverpool’s defence once again.

Not mad on Cameron, Upson, Bruce or Bojan.

I don't think the first 3 will start and I don't really rate Bojan very highly.

There really isn't much in the vein of 4.0 defenders. Not yet anyway.

Posted last night, but a new crowd, appreciate the feedback:

    My first RMT:

    Krul, Foster
    Mariappa, Chester, Shackell, Shaw, Davies
Sanchez, Siggy, Ince, Arfield, De Jong
    Costa, Sturridge, Rooney

My cheap three defense (bar Mariappa subject to change) have (within reason) nice rotational fixtures with my two main defenders (Shaw/Davies)

My midfield needs Mata but I love having three big hitting strikers... Very tough, but it's whats so enjoyable about FPL & getting advice from our community

Front 3 is killing the balance in my opinion.

I'd downgrade Sturridge as Liverpool fixtures are tough...plus I just don't fancy them as much this year without Suarez and with new additions.

Sturridge > Dzeko/Giroud and upgrade that midfield.

Also, I'd go with Simpson over Chester due to QPR/Palace rotation

You see, this is ny dilemma Link.... I like Sturridge from an fpl point of view & he just scores goals, but, he is eating a lot of money.... Thankfully have a couple weeks to look over 🙂

Well, as I state, my three cheapies rotate well with Shaw & Davies, although if possible moves don't happen I will get Duff & Targett, 4.0 each, almost certain starters, without (as just stated) new players coming in

Luke Shaw training alone, according to LvG, he's not fit enough to perform the role expected of him.

    Are we;

    A) Excited by the level of dynamism expected in this wingback role
    B) Concerned that he might not start the season in tip top form

    Personally, A.

If he'd come from anywhere other than Southampton, I'd take LvG at his word. But Pochettino famously puts his players through double training sessions because he values fitness so highly.

Might this be LvG's way of knocking Luke Shaw's ego back down to earth, after his astronomical transfer fee?

yes, that was my first though. He's been away on world cup duty so there hasn't been time for him to fall far off the pace and as you say, Saints had him up and down the flank all season long.

Probably LvG making an important example for his squad. He needs to set the bar high and get these lads to step up - maybe Shaw gave the impression he was resting on his laurels.

Bodes well for the season IMO.

Just been doing some maths on the £12.50 members fee; If you were to sign up now it would cost you a meagre 4p per day until the end of the season, but I'm resisting because:

    1) I don't know whether I will remain interested until the end of the season. (usually I lose interest around GW30)
    2) I have been a fully fledged member before in the 2012/13 season on a half-season membership, and although I recorded my highest finish, I didn't really use the features THAT much, yet I spent £10 on it.
    3) I have seen some previous members who have not signed up again, why is this?

So, are the members features any different to how they were in the 2012/13 season (the ticker was good then but apparently it is even better now?). Would appreciated any guidance on this from long-standing members.
    Cheers.

(Oh, and if I am going to have any chance of recouping some of the £12.50, I will need to join some prize leagues so do share below!)

Ben Davies | Debuchy | Shaw (Ward) (Targett)
Cesc | Hazard | Mata | Sigurdsson (Albrighton)
    Dzeko | Giroud | Rooney

Thoughts on going with Fabregas in addition to Hazard? Was tempted by Silva but fancy Chelsea's fixtures over City's. May look to do Cesc > Theo when he returns.

I very much dislike how people are so quickly put off by a 4.5 or 5 striker, just based on the name, when he's essentially filling the same function as an albrighton, or every 3-4-3 team's 5th mid.

I can't really judge those 2 pairs, would have to see the rest of the team.

Its the way you play it.
About 25% of the players make sense.
Nailed on players (Proven expensive options)
      Rotation players (Defense)
      Budget players (getting game time)
Gambles (players playing in the premier league first time)
Luck (because nobody can guess the future) It remains the key factor.

This site gives you an edge so anyone with a modicum of common sense will use the info but that puts you in a cluster of similar educated competitors.

Ok, in all seriousness, could someone please justify the acquisition of one S. Caulker to me? Goal threat perhaps, but playing for a team unlikely to keep many clean sheets, at .5 mil above what I would consider acceptable for the purchase of a defender from a promoted team.

Good start. Many people will say it's too heavy in midfield and you will almost certainly be downgrading one of them to free up cash for elsewhere early in the season - but that's a viable tactic and it'll be an easier decision to make after a couple of gameweeks than it is now.

Thanks man. Yeah I appreciate that nothing is concrete with Vermaelen yet - I'm including him on the hope that he joins Utd. I'm keeping a close eye on it.

I'd disagree with you regarding Weimann though. Villa have 3 winnable games to start with (before the international break). He's been playing well in pre-season and I'd expect him to pick up the mantle in Bentekes absence.

I think he is worth a punt at least, and could go up in value before the international break. I may look at transferring him depending on who is playing well/injuries.

I like that this is a slightly more unorthodox team, particularly in midfield.

For me, I would go for a more experienced defender than Shaw if you are spending that much on him. Not to say that he is a bad choice, but I would go for someone from the Chelsea back-line; Shaw is a great player, but he is v. young and it is tough to predict how he will adapt during his move to a massive club.

De Jong looks OK, and will no doubt boost Newc on the field, but I think there are much better points return options for 7.0m; the likes of Sigudssom, Arnie, Odemwingie or Barkley spring to mind. Also he did limp off injured in a recent pre-season friendly.

The same can be said of Snodgrass, as imo there are better options available for his price.

I think Debuchy is a solid choice. I would keep him in, he'll play well for Wenger I'm sure.

Thanks for the feedback, appreciated. I chose Shaw 'cos he will be played as a WB (crosses) and the easiness of MUFC's first 6 games in which he is guaranteed to start - I'll keep my eye on that injury though. I was tempted with Luis @ Chels but like you say, will be good see how he will adapt to a new team. Is Terry guaranteed to start?

De Jong has looked sharp in friendlies, will play just behind the striker and will most likely become set-piece taker. I want a MID with a low % of owners, I like the look of Barkley but something stopping me from picking him, maybe a gut feeling.

Liking the look of Siggy and contemplated him over Snod but Swans first game is MUFC w/ Chelsea in GW 4 too. Hull don't face a top 9 side until GW6.

The other option is to get rid of De Jong, replace for say Albrighton and swap Zamora for Ideye/Wickham/Ings/Jelavich or even Riviere at N'castle instead. Change to 3-4-3.

De Jong has indeed looked pretty handy in pre-season and will be a welcome addition to Newcastle's Team. He's not a bad choice, and could get goals if he plays in his favoured position just behind the striker. I do worry though that Newcastle won't be scoring too many goals this season without Remy, so I feel his assist opportunities will be diminished.

I think Sigurdsson is just a much better option. He's 1.0m cheaper than Dr Jong, guaranteed to play in "the hole" and has the prolific Wilfried Bony to link up with. Add in the fact that it's highly likely he'll be taking spot-kicks, and you have a potential points machine. Yes Swans have a tough first match at Old Trafford, but they have two decent fixtures the next 2 game-weeks.

I personally would utilise the Albrighton option to free up some more money for a better striker. Riviere may be a bit of a dark horse if Newcastle can get firing early.

Oh and fair enough about Shaw. I could be absolutely eating my words if he strings together a good run of games - that's the beauty of Fantasy Football!

What formation are you looking to play? 3-4-3 w/ Davies, Verm, Luis in D?

I have a strange feeling that Wisdom will be on a winning side the first game of the season and will certainly start.

Siggy scored a couple goals last night but think he may be largely unaffective against MUFC 1st game/Chels in 4th.

Yeah I'll be rocking the 3-4-3 for most of the season. Assuming Verm signs for Utd, then it will be Davies, Verm and Luis at the back. You raise an interesting point about Wisdom; maybe it is worth a punt dropping Sigs for the opener at Old Trafford and playing Wisdom.

I suppose there's no harm in putting Sig as first choice sub in case Wisdom doesn't play.
