Interview

Interview – Geoff Pryor – Sky Sports Winner

Geoff Pryor earned himself a cool £30,000 after clinching the Sky Sports Fantasy Football crown on the final day of 2014/15. In our latest post-season interview, we discuss Geoff’s recent campaign and also delve into his success across a number of Fantasy games.

Congratulations on your victory. Were you confident going into the final day that you’d claim the crown? How did you spend the final day?

Thank you.

I went into the last day with only a 13-point lead, so knew it was going to be tense. I had a good idea who my rivals had at this stage (although I wasn’t correct on all counts). It was a combination of watching Jeff and the boys on Soccer Sunday, along with checking the Sky Sports Game’s live score updates. Like Simon Marsh in Fantasy Premier League, I had my own “Aguerrroooo” moment when he scored late as I had him as my captain. It was around 11pm Sunday night when they finally updated the game scores, and I got the confirmation I was looking for.

What were your final transfers? How many trades did you have left in the final week?

I used my last two transfers on the penultimate weekend of the season on Sunday May 17 as the final part of my transfer strategy. First was used to bring Aguero back in as captain, and the other was to bring in Gylfi Sigurdsson for Christian Eriksen, as I knew some of my rivals had him. Siggy scored that day, so was relieved I had brought him in.

You’ve been a key competitor in “money games” previously – I believe you’ve always fared well in the Sun Dream Team game – what’s your Fantasy Football history?

Thanks again. Fantasy Football has been very kind to me over the years, and I’ve been playing it longer than I care to remember. I started taking it a lot more seriously about ten years ago, and have had some memorable wins over different games and formats. This Sky Sports win is probably my proudest yet, but I’ve also won great prizes in Sun Dream Team, Mirror and the Metro.

How did you fare in other games this season?
I had a good season across Fantasy Football games, I even managed my best ever FPL finish with a rank of 1355. Elsewhere, I finished 274 in Ultimate FPL and had teams placed 14th and 30th in the Sun Dream Team. I’d also managed to claim joint first in the Sun’s weekly game in Gameweek 37, bagging a decent prize. Believe it or not, I also played the Daily Telegraph game (finishing top 100) and the Daily Mail game (finishing top 50).

Do you find yourself concentrating your end of season focus on one game, depending on your progress?

I think it’s just natural to focus towards the game(s) you are making best progress in when it comes to the business end of the season. I do always try to keep my interest in all games though as much as possible.

Do you play, or have you considered playing any of the weekly games that have now been established – like Mondogoal or PlayOn?

I’m not a massive fan of weekly games personally, although I have played PlayOn several times. I finished fifth in the first Gameweek of this season, which won me £600.

Getting back to Sky Sports, how did you manage your transfer strategy throughout the season? Did you make a conscious effort to reserve trades for the run-in?

I always try to and hold a healthy transfer count until the later part of the season, but that should never be at the expense of missing an earlier transfer opportunity. You just have to play the season as it unfolds, and hope that fortune is on your side and you are not using all your transfers on injured players all the time.

In the FFScout articles towards the end of the season you published data about how many transfers were left in teams in Top 10, Top 100 etc. My transfer count was always above the average so that gave me confidence in the run-in to carry on with my strategy.

What was your best decision you made over the course of the season? Was there any decisions that you lived to regret?

I like to think I saved my best until last, as it was the one that finally won it for me. I was only two points in front going into the penultimate weekend with my final two transfers. I was going to use my free captain change on Saturday May 16 and whoever got it would then be transferred out on the Sunday for Aguero (captain).

I had two options. The first was to captain Kane at home to Hull on the Saturday, then switch him and Eriksen out for Aguero and Ki Sung-Yeung the following day. The other alternative was to captain Romelu Lukaku away to West Ham, then swap him out – along with Eriksen – for Aguero and Sigurdsson on Sunday.

I went with Lukaku (goal/assist), which then meant I had Siggy (goal) and Ki was injured. Then, to complete the good fortune, it meant I had Kane away at Everton on the last day – he managed to score, whilst Lukaku blanked.

Like everyone I also had my share of decisions that didn’t work out. One, in particular, I remember was on a Monday night match back in January. My transfer count was healthy, so I thought I would take a punt on bringing a player to be captain that Monday/following Saturday. The transfer was Kevin Mirallas on the night he decided to wrestle penalty duties from Leighton Baines, so his penalty miss meant he ended with a grand total of -1 doubled to -2 as captain!

Do you find the fact that lineups are hidden a benefit when at the top or a hindrance to your strategy?

I enjoy the challenge of trying to work out others teams when they are hidden, which might not be for everyone which has to be a benefit.

Katie Burgin was runner-up in the Scout League and pushing you close at the end – were you aware that her team wasn’t hidden? Did this influence your strategy?

It certainly didn’t go unnoticed by me, but there were so many teams up there with a chance in the end that my strategy wasn’t just aimed at one team.

When we spoke to Kevin Anderson – who finished ninth overall– he mentioned that he was able to track the likely lineups of his competitors. Were you doing the same?

“Reverse Engineering” is a key factor to success in any games where you can’t see others teams. It does take up a lot of time and effort to do this, but for those managers who do it well usually reap the benefit. However with there being so many transfers available in the Sky Sports game, just when you think you have someone’s team all worked out, they make a transfer which gets you scrambling to work it all out again.

How did you go about managing the captaincy over the season? Did you run a system that helped you ensure that you always used the captaincy and transfers efficiently?

I generally went with the captain tactic of switching on a Sunday to someone playing on the following Saturday which produced consistent results. Also key is making the most of the blank Gameweeks where you can get the free captain change.

Do you think you can achieve good results in the Sky Sports game without such planning?

In my opinion, you cannot win any Fantasy Football game without putting in the planning. In the Sky Sports game in particular, there are so many points to be gained through a well thought out transfer and captaincy plan.

Is there an essential strategy you use when playing the Sky Sports game that you’d recommend to new players?

First recommendation to new players is easy – make sure you read D1Sable’s excellent weekly previews on Fantasy Football Scout for a great insight into the game.

Are there any rules in the Sky Sports game that you’d tweak?

I think the Sky Sports rules and scoring are generally well thought out, with the tackling/passing bonuses meaning that some players you don’t consider in other games become good value. Perhaps a slight tweak to the defensive scoring to make investment in defenders a bit more worthwhile.

Do you have plans for the prize money? Perhaps a holiday to refresh yourself for another title tilt? What do your partner, family and friends think of your achievement?

Everyone is really proud of my achievement in Sky Sports this season, and if the wife hasn’t spent it all yet, then I’m still hoping for a nice family holiday in pre-season.

Finally, would you like to give a shout-out to any fellow Fantasy Football managers or members of the Fantasy Football community?

Just to my fellow Fantasy Football managers – enjoy the summer off and I look forward to resuming battle again next season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      Great article btw!

Iv only played sky for 2 seasons now and I have to say that the captains can be a pain if you don't keep on top of it. But if you keep up the effort it can make you some decent money!

Wish there was a similar set up for cash leagues in FPL...

Hasselbaink you had a very similar season to me - I came 10th in the telegraph and 327 in FPL. Thought you were in with a good shout of winning it a few weeks to go.

I thought I was too, was in 1st as late as 17th May - I think what cost me was using a couple too many transfers on my keepers early in the season - a point where I wasn't believing I'd actually be in with a shout for the top spot.

Quite exhausting season - I think I got to 4th in November so was pleased I managed to stay up there so long.

Congrats on your 10th - were you there or there abouts most the season?

Yeh I thought I remembered your name at the top a few weeks out, great effort to stay up there that long

I went from outside the top 1.000 up in nov up to 3rd at the end of January was in the top 10 for 2 months but faded away a bit in march into the 30s. To be honest thought id blown but I'd transferred mahrez in when leic had games in hand and didn't have a transfer to waste taking him out - finally came good at the end of May so I had a good late charge back up the table! 3weeks out thought I had half a chance but wasted too many transfers early on too. Ditching erikson a week before he went on a great run and bringing in Kieran trippier were particular low points!

How many teams do you play with? I only had the one, half considering going for it a bit more next year. Notice a lot if guys have multiple teams in top100 alone so who knows how many in total. Did mean I got the prize for 8th not 10th tho which was a nice surprise as I hadn't realised you can only get one prize for a top 20 finish

I had 5 teams. I may well take on a few more next season after feeling it is actually achievable this year. Just wish I'd paid a bit more attention in the first couple of months.

Really does take a lot of planning with only 30 transfers all season but I think I like the fact there are no captains in the game, makes if feel a bit less about luck.

I prefer it - the FPL is a good format but the double wildcard and unlimited transfers does mean there is less "pressure" on any given transfer. Good luck for next year - let's hope we are both up there challenging again!

Another question on Sky (since this is the Sky article!). Do you need to go for different types of player than FPL. E.g. I see that players get points for a lot of tackles / passes - does this point towards central defender or central midfielders being more essential?

Personally I didn't pay much attention to how players faired through that, I was poor this year though.
My planned tactic was to get a base of reliable players from lower price range, then use transfers to bring in and out game winners depending on captain options.
I reckon it would have worked if I focused on the fixtures better.

One of the hard things for me was to not waste transfers on moving cheaper players cause they had harder games. Normally in fpl you would let them ride them out on the bench but it can be easy to be tempted to move them. Obviously if you have made mistake and went with Stoke defender when WBA is the way to go you should do it if that makes sense

Thinking about it may be useful if someone like disable wrote an idiots guide ( no offence) to newbies on sky.
I was also wondering if an alternative article might be of use, instead of advice from an expert a kind of don't copy my stupid mistakes from someone who fooked up

Skrtel confirms he isn't happy with LFC contract offer. Guess that's rejected. I'm glad, he's very overrated. That doesn't mean he's bad, he's ok. People think he's better than he is because he scores goals. This is the last summer LFC can sell and make money on him. 10m-14m is definitely attainable.

By far the best CB they have. Prone to make a few mistakes mainly just being over-aggressive in the challenge but has good defensive instincts, ie he'd hack an opponent down rather than let him through on goal. Sakho, Lovren and Toure haven't the combined aggression of a goldfish.

This is what I mean. Hack an opponent down?! Have you seen him defend against Benteke, Giroud, Bony? Good defensive instincts? Blimey.

Sakho is by far the best CB.

Sakho is dodge. You can hack a man down without fouling him, win the ball then go through him and he'll be fearful the next time. You said he was good under Rafa. He had 3 defensive colleagues who could actually defend with Reina behind him and Mascherano in front. He's the senior defender now.

He 'was' good. Sakho is far, far, far, far better than Skrtel. I'm not even going to get into this. You're probably going to say Sakho can't pass or something, when he has the highest passing accuracy at the club of 90%+. Or that he can't defend..when Liverpool's 6 away CS in a row came when he was in the side. I'm not meaning to sound rude or anything, Im just tired of hearing Skrtel is better than Sakho.

Sakho is brill. Better than skrtel is quite an important player now. Like you say he's the senior defender and he has a good mentality imo. Sets a good example.

His main issue is he doesn't communicate though and is prone to dropping deep, so the other defenders often haven't a clue what he's doing because he doesn't communicate, this is just too much of a liability.

Sterling is very talented. He's 21 and he's English which jacks the price up. He is actually a 30m investment, but 40m because of playing in the 'premier league'. That being said, he is nowhere near the finished article or as good as people think

Christian Fuchs had become Schalke's third-best left-back behind Aogo and Kolašinac. Although extremely popular with the fans for his character and work rate, there was no place for him in a Schalke team that badly needs a more stable defence, and his departure in this transfer window was inevitable. Schalke had been desperate to sell him last year and were never going to renew his contract.

Fuchs functions best in a 3-5-2, whereas his clear defensive weaknesses can be overlooked in favour of his attacking potential. In the past, his crosses for Huntelaar to score had been fruitful, but these have dried up along with his free-kicks and at 29 he isn't going to regain his pace either.

That said, his all-action style will be a good fit for the Premier League and the move might well provide a much-needed new lease of life for the Austrian captain. Could well be worth a gamble if priced at £4.5m.

It's also nice to see 5 Austrians in the Premier League now with the arrival of Fuchs and Wimmer, although Weimann will be leaving Villa this transfer period.

Overall however, Fuchs' transfer to Leicester confirms a recent trend whereby the Bundesliga now only sells to the Premier League players whom German clubs no longer wish to keep, as their performance to wages ratio is no longer acceptable (see also Prödl, Wollscheid, Podolski, Marin etc.).

The last Bundesliga players whose departures were genuinely regretted by the Bundesliga would be Kagawa (Dortmund to Man Utd) and Cissé (Freiburg to Newcastle).

    Hi all,

i made a basic Windows program to backup my FPL season and some of the player stats etc. You can download it here if you like, you may get some use from it. Please read the "Read Me" included for more info.

    http://www.mediafire.com/download/kxef76cty6v0r29/fpl-auto-1.0.zip

It takes automatic screenshots of your GW's and general player stats.

First, thanks for this... great idea.

Next, I unfortunately don't seem to be able to get the program working.

I should say that I have Win7 64bit & failed to run the 'ie11_win64.reg' before the 'fplauto.exe' the first time round but, that didn't seem to resolve the issue the next time I ran it either...

Made screen cap of the DOS error msg here: http://i.imgur.com/pHsutnp.jpg

      Any advice?

Oh yeah, i remember reading about this. It only happens in IE 11 apparently so maybe you could try it on a friends/work pc instead. The .reg file is meant to fix it but obviously not in this case!

You need to add the FPL site to the list of "Trusted Sites" in IE (you may need to untick the https required option to do this). You can also try this:

It needs to set same Security level in all zones. To do that follow the steps below:

        1. Open IE
        2. Go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Security
        3. Set all zones to the same protected mode, enabled or disabled should not matter.
        4. Finally, set Zoom level to 100% by right clicking on the gear located at the top right corner and enabling the status-bar. Default zoom level is now displayed at the lower right.

Three years after I did my Achilles I played a bit of a match tonight in goals with my sons junior footy team at their training session. My plan is to play for a local veterans team next season but I was surprised just how weak my ankle still is when it came to (not very) long passes. Are any of our physio chaps on to give some advice ?

I don't do bursting sprints and never have done. I have always played CB and have mastered the art of loafing..You can play CB at amateur football for a lot longer than those daft lads running around like loonies up front.

When I snapped my achilles, I was limping for almost a year until I started walking completely normally again. 6 months after the injury, every morning and before every sport I had to do simple Achilles exercises to warm up and strengthen the Achilles.

In my case the Achilles was in its formative stages following the rupture so I can see how my warm ups and stretches helped, I'm not sure if you have missed the formative years or if you still have a chance at strengthening your achilles. Best speak to a proper doc imo

Thanks...Yes, mine was a snapped Achilles as well...a full on blow from the side right at the tip of my ankle did it. I thought it was ok until I tried a long pass and the strength just wasn't there. It was like kicking with a flip flop on.

Already going down in FFS folklore, and he still hasn't scored his screamers yet. 😯

I'd be careful of how one harnesses the "Fuchs", for as Ben Parker once said "With great power, comes great responsibility." A very versatile weapon, and extremely deadly if used in the right context. I think Christian Fuchs is a lot like the modern day Adam West for FF "he's not the hero FFS deserves, but is the one it needs right now with the summer, and whatnot."

Easily, if not winning, you'd be there or there abouts all the way through and by the last few weeks you would know exactly which players to get
