Moving Target

Moving Target – Kieran Trippier

Mauricio Pochettino’s quest to shore up Tottenham’s leaky defence continued apace last week with the capture of Burnley right-back Kieran Trippier on a five-year deal.

The former Clarets defender – who carded the third-highest Fantasy Premier League score (118 points) among his team-mates last term – lauded the quality of Spurs’ squad, insisting he’ll do his utmost to forge a route into their starting XI:

“When I first heard that the club was interested I didn’t have to think twice because it’s such a big club and now I just can’t wait to get started. I’m very keen to perform in training every single day, do the best I can and hopefully get the nod from the gaffer. Whenever I get a chance, I want to do well for the other players, the staff and, of course, the fans. The squad here is unbelievable, there’s so much quality in the team and I’m really looking forward to starting work in pre-season and being a part of that. I’ll take every opportunity I get with both hands and hopefully play my part for everyone at the club.”

The History

The Bury-born Trippier learned his trade as part of Manchester City’s youth set-up from the age of nine. Having captained the Sky Blues’ triumphant reserve side in the 2007/08 FA Youth Cup, the rampaging right-back penned his first professional contract.

Trippier joined Championship outfit Barnsley on a one-month loan deal from February 2010 but only managed three appearances due to injury. The former England U21 international made the switch back to the South Yorkshire club the following summer, originally joining on a six-month loan deal that was extended to encompass the full campaign. Trippier recorded 41 appearances in all competitions throughout 2010/11, notching two goals and six assists, and claiming the Young Player of the Season award.

Burnley then sought to recruit Trippier on a season-long loan deal as a replacement for their outgoing right-back Tyrone Mears, before signing him permanently during the January transfer window. Trippier amassed four goals and six assists in 50 appearances in all competitions, and was named Burnley’s Player of the Year.

In the 2012/13 campaign, Trippier – who was honoured in the Championship Team of the Year – missed just one league clash (due to suspension) and tallied a hugely impressive 12 assists in 45 outings. The next season harvested a similarly head-turning attacking output, as Trippier chalked up two goals and 14 assists across 46 outings en route to Burnley’s promotion and another spot in the Championship Team of the Year.

During Burnley’s one season in the top-flight last term, Trippier played all but five minutes of his side’s 38 league fixtures, notching four assists in the process – only six defenders registered more.

The Prospects

In light of Kyle Walker’s ongoing injury issues (he missed 23 matches last season and clocked only 2300 minutes in the 2013/14 campaign) and DeAndre Yedlin’s inexperience, it’s no surprise that Spurs felt obliged to bolster their right-back options. Certainly, the fact that Trippier sat out just six league matches in the past four seasons must have factored into their transfer committee’s thinking as Pochettino hunted for a reliable option.

From a Fantasy perspective, Trippier’s exceptional creative output should render him a real prospect in Spurs’ rearguard if he can nail down a starting berth and the North London club can improve on a paltry haul of nine clean sheets. Astonishingly, Trippier attempted 341 crosses last term and executed 42 more successful crosses than the next best defender Leighton Baines (91 to 49), underlining his proclivity for hugging the touchline. Incidentally, Baines was the only defender to fashion more key passes (70) than Trippier (63), who outclassed the much-vaunted Branislav Ivanovic (36) in this regard.

Considering that Burnley were the lowest-scoring team last season with 28 goals, there’s certainly scope for Trippier to improve on his four assists. In fact, the Lilywhites’ latest recruit tallied more than double the volume of successful crosses than Tottenham’s full roster of defenders (43) last season, while he came close to trumping their collective key pass output (73), too. With regards to his direct competitors, Trippier’s average of 57 minutes per key pass was more than twice as quick as Walker’s 125.4 and far superior to Danny Rose, whose average of 92.2 was the most impressive of any Spurs defender.

Tottenham’s poor defensive record last season (only four sides were breached on more occasions) should ensure that their rearguard starters are pitched at similar price points next term, with a ceiling of 5.5 expected. Given that Jan Vertonghen has managed just one goal and an assist in the last two seasons, Trippier looks poised to challenge Rose as the primary route into Spurs’ rearguard.

Fantasy managers might elect to hold fire in the early stages of next season, though, given that Pochettino’s troops open with a trip to Old Trafford and then face tough match-ups against Stoke City, Everton and Manchester City in their subsequent six fixtures (STO, lei, EVE, sun, CRY, MCI).

As an aside, the arrival of Trippier and 22-year-old Austrian centre-back Kevin Wimmer places uncertainty over Eric Dier’s prospects next season. The versatile defender – who bagged two goals and three assists last term – enjoyed a security of starts in the second half of 2014/15, yet was primarily tasked with covering at right-back. Elsewhere, Tottenham’s recent business has pushed former MLS starlet Yedlin further down the pecking order, with some reports suggesting that he’s poised for a loan switch to another Premier League outfit. If priced below 5.0, Yedlin would certainly pique our interest by virtue of his attacking instincts, with the Canaries opening schedule also boosting his appeal should he find his way to Carrow Road.

Bournemouth are to sign Ipswich left-back Tyrone Mings.

When the rumours started, I was pretty gutted as a Town fan, which tells you something. In the end, I'm pretty chuffed - we're getting a stack of money, Pitman on a permanent and Fraser on loan. Great deal.

But what does it mean for you/FPL? Well, the last Ipswich left-back who stepped up to the Prem was Aaron Cresswell. He didn't do too bad now, did he...

Mings was released by Southampton when he was young. Too small:
    https://instagram.com/p/1iUHakrBQ6/?taken-by=tyronemings (in the middle)

Then we signed him for £10k from non-league. He's filled out a bit since then:
    https://instagram.com/p/3j_CxrrBY3/?taken-by=tyronemings

Basically, he's an absolute beast. He's young (22), and only really had one full season as a pro, so there's plenty of room for improvement. His concentration lets him down sometimes, and he gets caught. But he has the physical attributes to get him out of trouble and, like Cresswell, this could end up being a bit of a bargain.

FPL-wise, his numbers aren't amazing from last season - 4 assists, 1 goal in 38 starts. But he'll be good to watch. I know some like the whoscored ratings, and he finished 39th overall.. joint with Alex Pritchard to put that in context. He's a very attacking full-back and I'll be keeping an eye on him.

Like so many, a lot will depend on price. I'm not sure there's much precedent for promoted clubs spending this much on a defender. In terms of attacking full backs, I think Trippier started at £5m(?), but his numbers were a lot better.

Plenty are mentioning Bournemouth rotation. If Mings is £4.5m, I'll be all over him (with only a hint of sentimentality). If he's £5m, then Francis would be my Bournemouth defender of choice. These two will be overlapping a lot as Ritchie and Atsu cut inside.

Anyway, that's Mings for you. 😯 Good luck, Ty.

Yeah, if you go for a Bournemouth defender, he's the one (price-depending). But I wouldn't say he's like a Trippier who (in theory!) was worth considering just for attacking potential. Thanks for the greenie. 🙂

Great summation. I think he could get more attacking returns this season as Bournemouth don't have as many 6FT+ players as Ipswich and he should get more of an opportunity to attack set pieces.

Ramsey is surely not nailed-on. What I feel myself is Cazorla, Coquelin and Ozil will be nailed on in the middle positions and Sanchez on left, but lot of competition for that one spot in RM between Ramsey, Ox, Wilshere and even Walcott.

Well, maybe but does not suit the team balance all the time, depending on opposition. Also, isn't it better to manage him especially given his injury concerns? I'd think so, especially when our squad has depth now.

I wouldn't be too certain about Ozil. It's not that long ago that Wenger burned him out by Christmas. With a full squad he will be first choice but Wenger doesn't need to risk that again...Play three/four and rest one and with perfectly good, and quality, back up it won't cause him a problem. They're in really good shape if they get some luck with injuries.

Yep, Ozil is still our best player by some distance, and without him, the team always looks a little off quality, so can see him playing the maximum games this season, with Sanchez. Can surely get the odd game off, but Wenger, like you know, likes to keep the same XI...

I am pretty sure he will be given the first two weeks off, he has looked off the pace at the Copa, surely needs a breather. Once he returns, the LM is a lock-on for Sanchez.

He is a top, top player - always gives his 100% - but has had a couple of niggling injuries in the first couple of games as well. I can tell you 100% right now that he will not play in GW1, maybe a sub appearance in GW2.

Pretty right, except that Debuchy is our #1 RB, and if he is fit, will remain #1. Bellerin, as good as he is, is just 20.

Also Ramsey's spot is really tricky, Would be one of Ox, Ramsey, Wilshere depending on opposition.

Why? There is not a single weak link bar Mertesacker, and he seems to play pretty well alongside our other CB, who is one of the top three in the league. Bellerin and Monreal also complement each other - one pacey and young, other solid and experienced.

Koscielny is a weak defender, too irrational and without consistency. Debuchy is an overrated RB and Monreal is not credible at all. Wenger wanted to sell him for 5M euros, come on. Cech and Bellerin are the only good ones in there.

            1. Saniul

Did you know players could actually improve? Monreal would have been sold for £5m one season back, but now, I'd have him ahead of anyone else at LB, finally someone solid and not mistake-prone. He is one of the most improve defenders in the PL right now.

Also sorry, i will not agree about Koscielny with you. After all, he has got linked to Barcelona and Real Madrid in the last three years, I would not sell him for anyone else, top player.

Mertesacker, yes. I would replace him if we got a good defender, maybe even give Gabriel a chance this season?

Top player? Are you serious? Someone who forgets how to cover as soon as the attacking players start playing badly should not be allowed to play in a top team. He looks like the more capable version of Ranocchia(who's a very mediocre CB) with the only difference being that the first one is at least aggressive(sometimes too much) while the latter is one of the least tough CBs in the world.

Monreal might have improved but he's still an average LB, you can't compare him to Azpilicueta, Kolarov, Clichy, Baines, Bertrand and honestly not even Rose, Shaw and Moreno. I could understand if he were 20/21/22/23 but he's 29 years old.

Not really, I'd say. We have a lot of comparable players at RB, LB, CM, CDM (if Schneiderlin arrives) and RM, and also someone else will play at LM ahead of Sanchez. Could easily be one choice starting in CS, and then another in GW1.

I'd say one of Welbeck or Wilshere on left, one of Ramsey or Ox on right.
Also, Giroud against opposition who sit deep and Theo where defences leave more spaces, so depending on situation it could vary, but then again, a new striker is not an impossibility.

          Apparently

          a) Ramos has said he wants the deal to be kept seperate as he doesn't want to be seen as responsible for the departure of Casillas (by helping facilitate the arrival of his replacement)
          b) Real have put the DDG deal on hold to try and resolve the Ramos situation

The only thing making him attractive is the paucity of top strikers in the market, and the few there are, are already at clubs who would not sell.

Higuain, Benzema and Bacca could all have overpriced transfers this summer.

Okay, can anyone tell me about which players could really shine at Bournemouth and Watford? I can identify most of them Norwich players, and I'll eventually have Ruddy/one of their defenders, but what about the other two?

I went through the Just Promoted articles, and it sounds like a lot of them are good options, but that's because they were 1-2 in the league...anybody, Matt Ritchie aside?

Watford had a decent defensive record last season, yet for the beginning of the season, the fixtures don't look to appealing IMO

(CB) Pradl is someone to look into

As for Bournemouth? I was rewatching some games and Troy Deeney stands out the most to me. Would use him as a third striker without hesitation.

With Sanchez having a potential extended holiday due to Chile's amazing advancement in the Copa America… is it safe to say Walcott has a 100% starting spot for at least the first 2 games?

Apparently the Mail (AAHAHAHAHAAA) and also the Guardian saying Sanchez will get four weeks off. The Copa America final (should they reach it - Looking good now with Bolivia / Peru to play) is five weeks before GW1. With his quality he wouldn't need a pre-season to drop right in. Can't see him missing more than the first week, in any case. Will stay away from both Sanchez and Wally GW1 unless I get a clear indication what's going on.

I'd say Sanchez will surely miss GW1, maybe GW2 as a sub?
And as for Arsenal midfielders you would want to get, only Cazorla and Ozil will be nailed on per se. Walcott always an intriguing option if he is a mid.

      Ruddy/Boruc
      Koscielny/PvA/Huth/Martin/Stoke(4.5)
      Firmino/Mane/Silva/Ritchie/Haz
      Benteke/Rooney/Deeney

      4.5/4.5 = 9
      6/5/4.5/4.5/4.5 = 24.5
      8/8/10/5/11.5 = 42.5
      8.5/10.5/6 =25

        £9.0 £8.0 £10.5 £5.5 £12.0
        £9.0 £10.0 £6.5

I'd put that team at atleast £105.0, honestly. You underpriced your midfielders IMO. And I'd say Firmino will be listed as a striker.

Kos to Francis will save 1-1.5m. Deeney to 4.5 - you'll prob play 3:5:2. Richie might be 5.5-6m.

Fix your starting line up to fit in a 3-4-3.

It's worth it if you can get in the right players.

It's commonly known that strikers garner the most points, so why wouldn't you pick as many as possible?

I find, always at the start of the season, pick cheap defenders. You'll figure out who's going to keep clean sheets about 6 or 8 or 10 games into the season.

That was my tactic last season, and I won both of my mini leagues.

I also didn't use my WC until the DGW in April and didn't even really need to.

I ended up with a defence something like this: Terry, Bellerin, Clyne - with Schmeichel in goal.

          Go me.
