Scout Notes – Gameweek 34 – Monday

Harry Kane and Dele Alli both score twice as Tottenham run riot at the Britannia. The north London side rack up their fourth clean sheet in five to close the gap on Leicester at the top of the table.

Kane and Alli at the double

Tottenham Hotspur closed the gap to five points at the summit of the Premier League with a thumping 4-0 win over Stoke City.

Harry Kane punished over 200,000 Fantasy managers that shipped him out across the previous fortnight, bagging his third brace in five outings. The Lilywhites’ talismanic frontman has amassed five more shots on target (18) than any forward in his last six starts and is leading an attack that’s bagged 13 goals in five matches. With some tempting fixtures to follow (WBA, che, SOU, new), many will now be looking to re-acquire Kane for the run-in.

Similarly, Dele Alli had nearly 100,000 managers lamenting their decision to cash in on a midfielder that delivered attacking returns (three goals, four assists) in five of his last six fixtures. The 6.2-priced England international currently ranks joint-third among all midfielders for total score (162) this campaign, underlining his immense value.

Mousa Dembele and Erik Lamela grabbed assists, while Christian Eriksen turned provider for two of the visitors’ strikes. The latter’s Fantasy value is well-documented, but Lamela is also worthy of consideration, given that he’s upped his output (one goal and two assists in two) and has fired seven shots inside the box in his last four starts.

Investors in Spurs’ rearguard profited from their fourth clean sheet in five match-ups. Tottenham next host a West Bromwich Albion outfit that posted three blanks in their past quartet of fixtures, so Mauricio Pochettino’s troops will fancy their chances of securing another shut-out.

Potters battered at the Britannia

Stoke City lay claim to a solitary win in six matches following their second successive heavy defeat.

The Potters shipped 10 goals in their last trio of outings and have mustered one clean sheet in 12, negating the appeal of their defensive assets. At the other end of the pitch, Marko Arnautovic (10 goals five assists) harbours some promise, yet Stoke’s mixed schedule (mci, SUN, cry, WHU) and absence of a double Gameweek diverts attention away from the Austria international. Xherdan Shaqiri is an early doubt for the weekend after he was forced off at the break with a hamstring complaint.

Hibbert steps up Toffees recovery

Tony Hibbert clocked 45 minutes for Everton’s U21 outfit as they ran out 1-0 victors over Manchester City.

With Jagielka and Seamus Coleman both likely to sit out the Merseyside derby, there’s a possibility that Hibbert – at a price of just 3.9 in FPL –could receive a call to action at Anfield. Alternatively, Roberto Martinez might opt to reinstate Leighton Baines (if fit) at left-back and swap Bryan Oviedo onto the opposite flank. Nonetheless, given that Everton have home clashes against Bournemouth and Norwich on either side of their double Gameweek 37, Hibbert could be worth monitoring if the Toffees injury worries in defence fail to improve.

Wilshere scores for Gunners reserves

Jack Wilshere continued his recovery from injury by finding the net in a 2-1 reserve loss to West Brom.

Wilshere could be on course for a return to top-flight at some point before the end of the season, then, after Arsene Wenger confirmed he will need “three or four games” at this level before being considered for the first-team squad. Whilst the upcoming clashes against West Brom and Sunderland look likely to come too soon, the Gunners’ final two home matches, against Norwich and Villa in Gameweeks 36 and 38 respectively, could allow Wenger the chance to hand him some minutes in the centre of the park.

Stupid thing is that I am still considering getting Van Aanholt in GW 35 rather than Alderweireld

Van Aanholt has a double in 37, so he'll have one extra game to better Alderweireld's score.

My main rival in my ML, who always runs me close (he beat me two years ago), is pretty good at picking a strong team and making sensible transfers, but is pretty laid back about it and just pops on Sat AM to make a change and that's him done for the week.

Moaning at me in the pub this week, "how come you can't play your BB at the same time as your WC!?" (he played his WC this week).

"It's stated in the rules Bob. That's why I played mine last week"
"Well I don't have time to go through all the rules"

    The definition of schoolboy??

In fact, he went on to admit, he hadn't realised there was a second WC this year until he saw I'd played mine. And THAT is why I didn't WC in GW32

Wouldn't dream of using that word! Haha

But no, I think when that word is used, it should refer to those who simply don't take to the extremes we do here, but those who genuinely make poor decisions, but are getting away with murder.

We all know people in leagues who never compete, and I can think of one such player this year and he's continually getting lucky.

The lad I'm referring to above is very good player. Frustratingly he does so without the obsession that I give the game. Here:

Yea i know what you mean, have a ML rival who's the same way. It's not rocket science this game - but we here obsess over 50/50s and sometimes overthink it looking at underlying stats, opponents defensive stats etc.

Classic case was Sturridge. He brought Sturridge in for 2 reasons - 1) he's scoring again, 2) he didn't play in Europa.

We knew the 2 reasons...but many chose to tarnish it with the Mr Glass factor, rotation, limited minutes etc. Might still prove to be true but hey, points is points.

Is your resurgence still on track?

I had a blip in a 13 week updwatrd trend in GW33, but back on the greens this week. Really want to hit that top 10k now. Not sure how achievable it is. A nice Sanchez/KDB haul (and a Kun rest/blank) would go a long way.

              sorry missed this.

Nope - gambled on Lukaku TC last week to hopefully spend some points for a worthwhile GW34 BB.

Not online did Lukaku TC backfire tremendously, I ended up spending points in desperation anyway (in came Martial Moreno Sanchez) but BB is okay so far with Lloris/Dier/Kane/Mahrez on bench. Too bad my 11 DGWers are kak.

That's tough mate. Lukaku trolled a load of people. I brought him in, but only C'd him.

My Bench Boost is going very well. Primarily thanks to Gomes and Kane. 35 on the pine so far, with two players to play their second game. 🙂

That has made up for a number of (mostly Liverpool and West Ham) players who let me down.

Just had a look at your season history, and you're well above average mate!

There may be some players here who consistently hit the top 10k, and the standard here is high, but I would argue that you're not even average by FFS standards.

You're having a great season too mate!

think being hitting top 10k season in and out could be considered above the average but it's the matter of perspectives probably.

You're absolutely right mate! I'd always considered myself a good player, but not obviously one of the worlds best. I've had two top 3k finishes in my career.

But only when I joined FFS two years ago did I realise that the benchmark on here was a top 10k finish every year.

Well placed to have a good crack at that this year. Been a couple of years now since I had my best finish of 1,913rd

And I appreciate your love for the badge! 🙂

How many GW37 DGW players are you guys looking like having now? With Liverpool all over the place and Spurs assets looking indispensable, I'm looking at a team only vaguely playing towards that DGW atm.

Million dollar question after recent events. I was set to go with 10 or 11, now think I'd be happy with around 7 or 8. probably Mignolet, Kirchoff, Cresswell, Payet, Smalling, Lukaku, Defoe. Maybe throw in a Liverpool mid. Will be keeping Alli and Kane.

Your comment smacks of the problem I'm having - there seems to be a real dirth of reliable dgw37 midfield assets. Liverpool can't be trusted, Chelsea and Man Utd are muted, and Barkley has burned me twice this season. Other than Payet I can't see any obvious midfield dgw37 choices.

Definitely in - United defender/DDG. Lukaku. Kane. Alexis. Alli. Payet. Cresswell. PVA.
      Maybe - Aguero/Sturridge.

Not to take anything anyway from Spurs, but I can't believe how badly Stoke were setup. I thought that was really embarrassing for Hughes; a seasoned manager.

There was just no outball for them. No way of relieving pressure.

Anyway, hopefully Milner can convert me a penalty so I feel less crappy about Alli waving at me from the bench 🙂

Not sure I'd blame that entirely on Hughes. You set up tactically, and he probably got some of it wrong, but their tracking back and lazy losing of possession in attack was not what I would expect from those players, especially given previous performances this season. Some of them just aren't bothered now, won't get Europe, won't get relegated, Summer holidays at the forefront of their thoughts.

For those considering Oscar for whatever weird masochistic reason because of GW37:

The Telegraph says that Oscar is one to watch as far as exits go, reporting that the Brazil international's future is "in further doubt" after he withdrew, late on, from the squad for the comprehensive home defeat to Manchester City on Saturday evening.

It says Oscar "told interim manager Guus Hiddink and Chelsea's medical staff that he was sick, which forced the Dutchman to make a late change after having originally named the 24-year-old among his substitutes."

The Brazilian had been in the team for the previous week's 1-0 Premier League defeat at Swansea, but was set to drop to the bench against City because, the Telegraph explains, Willian was available again and Hiddink also "preferred to stick with youngster Ruben Loftus-Cheek."

I think this is exactly what will happen! Bigger more experienced teams have let big leads go before:

True but apparently no team has let this big a lead slip before. And they have a great team ethic; no sooner was Vardy sent off, Ulloa stepped up to the plate. They work for each other as a team and they've got the title in their sights now.

Aye I saw it on Twitter but double checked and it's true. Crazy really. Utd were serial winners as well. I don't think it's done and dusted just yet. Plus as a neutral it would be good to see the race undecided until the final day!

Last 6 for Leicester has been 5 wins and a draw. Last 6 for Spurs has been 4 wins and 2 draws. Leicester still right up there form wise, and possibly would have won the West Ham game if not for some extremely dodgy decisions.

Fixture wise they may have slightly trickier fixtures with a dull, defensive United on the way and maybe Chelsea. But then, Spurs have Chelsea as well, and Southampton who are still pretty capable. Everton and Swansea very winnable for Leicester, as are WBA and Newcastle for Spurs.

I still fancy Leicester to win, it'll be tight though.
