Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 17

With Harry Kane (11.3) recording a second successive blank at home to Hull City last night, his Tottenham Hotspur team-mate Christian Eriksen (8.5) may well find himself vying for top spot in this week’s poll.

The 11% owned Dane’s recent form has been electrifying. Five goals and two assists over the last four Gameweeks makes him a strong armband option when Burnley drop by White Hart Lane on Sunday.

No player has had more goal attempts or more shots on target than Eriksen over that period.

Those who believe the absence of Mousa Dembele has contributed to to Kane’s troubles in front of goal will be keenly anticipating Mauricio Pochettino’s press conference for news of the Belgian’s return.

We’ll also be monitoring Antonio Conte for an update on the fitness of Eden Hazard (10.5) as Chelsea visit Crystal Palace this weekend. The 37.5% owned schemer missed the Blues’ 1-0 victory away to Sunderland with a minor injury and, if fit, could be a popular option against an Eagles side that still has just a single clean sheet to their name.

But given his erratic away form, which has seen him deliver only one of his four double-digit FPL points hauls on the road, Hazard’s 53% owned colleague Diego Costa (10.9) is surely likely to be a more popular captaincy choice.

The Spain international may have failed to find the net against Sunderland, but that was one of only three Gameweek blanks this season.

With a goal and assist against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 16, Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic is another set to garner support. However, the 27.6% owned Swede will not find it so easy when he visits a West Brom side that has conceded just four goals in their last quartet of league matches.

Goals look on the agenda when Arsenal visit Manchester City this weekend. The Gunners have scored 19 times on the road, while the home fans have witnessed their side notch 15 goals at the Etihad this season.

This puts Alexis Sanchez (11.8) firmly in the frame for top billing in this week’s poll. The 35.7% owned Chilean’s goal in the 2-1 loss away to Everton on Tuesday was his ninth on the road.

No player has been more prolific on their travels, who will be seeking a fifth double-figure away haul this weekend.

The Manchester City teamsheet is far more difficult to second guess, which may temper interest in assets such as the 9.7% owned Kevin De Bruyne (10.7), who registered an assist in City’s 2-0 victory over Watford in Gameweek 16.

The Merseyside derby also looks tough to call, with Ronald Koeman’s troops showing a determination and attacking edge against Arsenal that had been lacking in recent weeks. This could yet revive confidence in striker Romelu Lukaku (9.4), who ended a four-match scoring drought with a brace away to Watford in Gameweek 15.

Mid-price assets among the Liverpool ranks may offer further differential candidates for the armband.

In the absence the injured Philippe Coutinho, Adam Lallana (7.2) and Divock Origi (6.8) have excelled.

The England international, who tops the “transfers in” table this ahead of Saturday’s deadline, has registered three goals and an assist in his last two starts.

Meanwhile, Origi has netted in four successive Gameweeks and also supplied an assist away to ‘Boro last night. He’s expected to recover from the minor knock sustained late on at the Riverside.

Reds’ winger Sadio Mane (9.4), who has accrued four assists and a goal since Gameweek 13, is another potentially explosive option. The 20.7% owned Senegal international already has four double-digit hauls this season.

For those looking for differential armband picks, West Ham have three candidates on the menu ahead of the visit from a Hull City side which have conceded 20 goals on their travels, more than any other team.

Andy Carroll (6.1) and Michail Antonio (6.7) are set to be the Hammers main goal threat, with the former set to earn a second successive start having turned out against Burnley on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Dimitri Payet (9.1) offers strong assist potential, having created 22 chances for his team-mates over the last six Gameweeks, a tally bettered only by Sanchez.

Another strong alternative captaincy selection is Sunderland’s 24.8% owned Jermain Defoe (7.8), who will be looking to add to his eight goals when Watford visit Wearside. With Walter Mazzarri’s troops conceding 16 goals on the road this season, the veteran Black Cats striker looks a promising option.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll tomorrow when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Spurs dominated as expected and created lots and scored 3. Unfortunately the plays weren't ending with Kane. His movement was decent and let the midfield do their thing.
Kane (c) was a good decision. Just unlucky

Dembele does nothing for Kane. Dembele helps the team dominate. When Spurs dominate Kane can thrive.
Question is then Will spurs dominate Burnley without Dembele. I think so

Without Dembele, Kane tends to fall ball in midfield to help as passing accuracy of tot mid is reduced..Him falling back diminishes his returns

you clearly don't know much about football, dembele alone doesn't make kane tick, it's just coincidental that the stats indicate that... if you watch spurs games you'll see that its only a matter of time before another kane haul

They haven't had the fixtures to keep clean sheets. They kept one against Spurs which was good.

Fixtures are really good now and they have some form. Jones @ 4.8 looks nailed for now.

Personally I am keeping Cedric unless we get concrete information that he will be out for a couple of GWs. With those fixtures and Soton's defensive form, I still think he is great value.

Got him in two GWs ago, so obviously he hasn't produced for me.

Hasn't produced for me too. I have a FT to burn and Jones looks nailed for now with good fixtures.

On the other hand Cedric is clearly a rotation risk. If I dint have a FT to burn I would have obviously kept him.

      Firmino, Nacho ---> Lallana, Llorente

The players being brought in are both rising in price tonight whilst the players being shipped are both dropping, so positive signs from team value perspective.

These moves should also free up around 2.0 for you to upgrade Capoue to Siggy or your preferred midfielder.

As others, all 50/50 decisions on last few days went wrong.
As upset as i am, thinking of save FT to make cirgury on GW18. (thkx in advance)

    Grant (Pick)
    Clyne, Holebas, Cedric (McAuley, Amat)
Sanchez, Hazard, Payet, Siggy (De roon)
    Kane (C), Costa, Ihenacho

    A) Ihenacho to Origi (leader of ML already has him)

    C) Save FT

It is then a battle between Wijnaldum and Can for that midfield spot.

Just watched the Spurs 5 Swansea 0 highlights again:

    - Kane was relentless
    - Eriksen's assist and 1st goal were very lucky
    - If I watched that before last night's game there is no way I would have captained Eriksen over Kane

The 'Dembele Theory' is what I don't understand.

    - Does Kane drop deeper when he doesn't play to almost act like a playmaker? Similar to Sanchez when Cazorla doesn't play for Arsenal although that hasn't stopped his points as he's exploded in recent weeks.

Can someone please shed light on this please? Not stats more an understanding of how Spurs play with Dembele and without Dembele and what it does to Kane's positioning and goal threat.

      • 7 Years

dont know about the kane theory, but you just cant have the most shots on target and attempted assists over 4 gws by being lucky

I know I'm an Eriksen owner just saying he was lucky in the Swansea game with his 1st assist and 1st goal.

      • 11 Years

Dembele's ability to beat the first player on the dribble and get his vision up enables him to create the "assist the assister" pass whilst also putting the deep defenders under pressure with their marking. This allows strikers/wingers to make runs in behind because the defenders are caught ball watching.

Okay this is great but Walker and Rose got an assist each last night but no Kane goals or a single word spoken of him.

Normally you would think he would be on the end of those but he wasn't.

        1. Deano

Most of his scoring is from headers and runs in behind the offside trap. Both FBs have tended to get very high and central in their delivery lately.

The theory is that Dembele links up the play. Without him, Kane has to drop deeper for the ball.

Like I thought! It's a shame it effects him because Sanchez isn't effected by Cazorla's absence as stated above but it's surely a similar situation.

Sanchez is a world class player, Kane is an also ran. Let's not kid ourselves here.

            Big statement!

He's no Sanchez granted but people paying £11.3m for someone and captaining means he must be doing something right.

Probably for the first time this season I'm happy with my starting XI:

    Pickford
    Jones Cedric Alonso
    Hazard Sanchez Eriksen Siggy
    Costa Kane Origi

Subs: Heaton, De Roon, Amat, Love

What should I do with this team? 1FT and 0.8 ITB.

    Grant - Foster
    Cedric - Azp - Walker - Holebas - Amat
    Siggy - Firmino - Sanchez - Snoddy - Capoue
    Rondon - Costa - Ibra

    Firmino ->
    A) Pogba and go without liverpool cover and do Pogba -> Coutinho when Coutinho returns
    B) Save and keep faith on him

I think Kane is enough spurs for me so no Eriksen.

He's certainly covering 2 out of 19 Eriksen points.

Tempted to say play walcott, however surely got to be a chance he's benched after his last two away performances.

      Cedric

Hey guys, hope everyone's well! Not logged into the Scout for a while!
Just after a spot of advice: worth transferring in Ake for Pieters for free? Could also afford Smith.
Any thoughts much appreciated as always. Cheers.

Pieters looks set to raise in price, I think, so you might want to wait for that.

    Draft league question:
    Nolito or Shane Long?

Really reluctant to get rid of Firmino. Feel like I've missed the boat on Eriksen and Lallana is a bit of a sideways move. Anyone else feeling the same?

        I have the following:
        Redmond. Hazard. Sanchez. Firminho. Redmond
        Kane. Costa. Dio

Last 3-4 weeks have been pretty bad given that 4 out of the 8 haven't performed

I am doing Firmino to Eriksen. Origi completely changes his role.

Yeah Origi's definitely changed his role I agree. I always struggle with Liverpool players because as a fan if I get rid of Firmino there'll be a little part of me hoping he won't score on Monday which is not good!
