Captain Sensible – Gameweek 18

Our usual pre-Gameweek members’ article arrives this Saturday evening, giving you ample time to assess matters ahead of Monday’s 11.30am Boxing Day deadline.

To get underway, we take a look at the main Captain Poll contenders, then examine the Opta numbers and Rate My Team rankings before highlighting a differential or two to help advise on your armband dilemma.

Captain Poll

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the runaway leader in this week’s Captain Poll as Manchester United prepare to entertain Sunderland.

Over 46% of voters have opted for the veteran, who has netted seven times in his last six league outings and faces a defence that has yet to record a single clean sheet on their travels.

Alexis Sanchez (21%) leads the chasing pack for Arsenal’s home match against West Brom.

The Chilean has produced points in each of the last five rounds of fixtures, cementing his place as the top scoring player in Fantasy Premier League.

Given that the Gunners are up against Baggies backline with just a single shutout in the last 14 Gameweeks, Theo Walcott – who has netted six of his eight goals at home – looks a very tempting differential, with a mere 1% backing in our poll.

With just one goal in his last five appearances, Eden Hazard earns only 11% of the votes for Chelsea’s home clash with Bournemouth.

His Stamford Bridge team-mate Michy Batshuayi (1%) could be another differential candidate: it’s far from certain that he’ll be leading the Chelsea attack in Diego Costa’s absence but, if he starts, he’ll surely be a factor against the Cherries.

Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne is again another overlooked option, with under 2% backing for a trip to a Hull City side that’s yet to keep a clean sheet in front of their own fans.

Back-to-back assists against Watford and Arsenal took the Belgian’s tally to 11 for 2016/17, already surpassing last season’s total. Yet, with a mere two goals to his name – his last back in Gameweek 5 – De Bruyne has been far from explosive in recent months.

Sadio Mane earns just 1% of the votes as Liverpool welcome Stoke City to Anfield.

Now just one point behind Hazard in the Fantasy Premier League standings, the Senegal international has produced returns in six of his seven home appearances and welcomes the Potters in fine form, with two goals and four assists in his last five Gameweeks.

The likes of Troy Deeney and Christian Benteke could emerge as mid-price alternatives as Watford and Palace’s porous defences go head-to-head at Vicarage Road.

Faith in Spurs pair Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen has plummeted in light of the weekend blank at home to Burnley.

Both sit around the 1% mark as they travel to a Southampton outfit that have conceded just five goals at St Mary’s, with Claude Puel’s men serving up a clean sheet in each of their last three home outings.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

            Yes, almost every single time:

            1. Think about captaining safe vs differential
            2. End up with the safer pick
            3. Differential outscores the safer pick by miles

Posted earlier, just look at the histories.

Siggy blanked last two...OK, but was playing away to MID and WBA, two good defences. At home to weaker defence, like WHM...boom! Double point hauls

Ibra, yes, in form...all his hauls, away from Old Trafford...done sod all at home

Should've scored more...he set up pretty much all of them...lots of assisting the assister

                Saucy

Don't be fooled by WHM's last 2 clean sheets. Burnley away are basically useless in attack and even they almost scored. Against Hull they looked a mess. Extremely lucky not to concede 2.

                Good fixture for Mr Fernando.

Moyes: "Sir Alex [Ferguson] went out and bought wisely and correctly in the transfer market and what he thought he needed to do."

I think he was referring to Taibi, Prunier, Cruyff, Forlan, Veron, Anderson, Djemba-Djemba and Bebe.

Diouf, Obertan etc. Fergie made a decent list in great and bad tbf. What you'd expect from a 26-year reign.

Moyes can talk about transfers. He missed out on every single one of the club's top targets then panicked & splashed on Fellaini on Deadline Day, paying more than his release clause 😆

Ronaldo, Cantona, Keane, Schmeichel, Rooney, Carrick, Van der Sar, De Gea, Van Persie, Evra, Ince, Hughes, Ferdinand etc. etc. etc. is probably more who he had in mind when making the comment. Besides, Forlan and Veron were good players, just didn't work out for them

When's the first major FFS Convention going to be? Folks walking round with their Grav on a T, setting up stalls to talk about their spreadsheets, how they got to their ticker values etc.?

Then hotel room parties dancing drunk to the Pixies, Arcade Fire etc. (other music rooms available) Talking captain fails and successes, wildcards that worked.

Just finished Halt & Catch Fire series 3, got me thinking. Drinking and thinking.

-Extra point for goal and cs

Thanks AW. The point I'm trying to make is that Hazard's goal involvement might be higher now with Costa out, but what do I know! 😛

Also I forgot to mention the fact that Hazard destroyed Bournemouth last season when he was on form 🙂

    Which option is better:

    A) Cedric (TOT)
    B) Amat (WHU)
    C) McAuley (ars)
    D) Cedric to Jones (SUN) -4?

Who is everyone that's saying Spurs will blank? I'd be very surprised if they don't get at least 1 goal. Cedric also has the issue of being rotated too.

          This.

I have Cedric and not convinced Saints D is actually that special either.

Jones appears better value imo. Hit or not I think Jones gets more points than Cedric in the long run. I'd also be surprised if Spurs and Kane don't score this Wednesday.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you.

Mon and Tues are only bank holidays because Xmas day is on a weekend and Boxing Day is a bank holiday anyway, it just so happens to fall on a Monday this year.

I bought my godson a Xmas family tub of mini-cheddars when he came for a sleepover. He ate the lot in about 90 minutes. Little guy is as thin as a rake. I think his metabolism works differently to mine. 😕

I don't know, I only got them for him, he seems to live on them. It seemed a huge quantity anyway.

Off topic, but why do some people who like metal music often think you have to dress all in black and have piercings and long hair to appreciate heavier music.

Last night I had my second encounter this year where I complimented someone on their band t-shirt, in this case Pallbearer, and they looked at how I was dressed and said "You can't like them". The same thing happened to me with Deafheaven at a beer festival in the summer.

I think music in general influences dress. Though it's more prevalent in that sub-culture. No idea why it is.

I always wonder why every generation ends up dressing the same as each other to be different
