The Stock Check – Gameweek 19 – Friday

The set-piece prowess of Robert Snodgrass comes to the fore but fails to earn Hull City victory as Ross Barkley stoops to head a first goal since Gameweek 10. Here’s the Stock Check following Friday’s fixture.

On the Rise

Robert Snodgrass
Snodgrass produced two stunning free-kicks, one striking the woodwork, the other finding the top corner of Everton’s net.

His sixth goal of the season, a fourth from a dead-ball scenario, elevated him once more in our thinking as a low-to-mid price midfield asset.

The Scot’s record is therefore maintained: he has either scored or assisted 50% of Hull City’s goals this season.

That ensures that Snodgrass must remain on our radar as a fourth midfielder to allow heavy investment up front, or a fifth option in a 3-5-2.

However, Hull City’s fixtures continue to provide a major barrier.

While they next face a trip to West Brom and a vital home clash with Bournemouth, following that, the Tigers are cursed with an evil run that will likely limit Snodgrass’ output.

Mike Phelan’s side must endure visits to Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal, with a home fixture with Liverpool also scheduled for the following four Gameweeks.

Leighton Baines
A beautifully flighted cross served up Ross Barkley’s equaliser and saw Baines record just a third assist of the season.

It represented the left-back’s third attacking return in six Gameweeks and came packaged with the maximum bonus points, taking him to eight over that spell.

Ronald Koeman’s decision to revert from a three-man backline, shifting Baines from wing-back to a traditional full-back role was disappointing. But that tactical tweak may be revisited and, with Everton’s schedule improving markedly, it seems wise to monitor Baines’ underlying numbers in the coming weeks.

The jury is still out on the preferred Toffees full-back option, with Seamus Coleman’s energy arguably offering a greater level of goal threat. However, Baines left-foot supply and spot-kick duties are factors in his favour, with current form suggesting that he is the go-to option.

Ross Barkley
Dare we consider Barkley?

A source of much frustration for his manager and Fantasy managers alike, he has the talent to deliver but has once again disappointed in this campaign.

Perhaps the goal on Humberside, just his third of the season, will provide the catalyst for greater contributions, though we’re unlikely to jump the gun.

Everton’s fixtures promote further attacking returns, but Barkley has never provided that consistent source we crave and expect from a player with such ability.

In Decline

Romelu Lukaku
The Belgian upped his goal threat, mustering four attempts on the night, one of which struck an upright.
But ultimately, Lukaku failed to follow up on his superb Gameweek 18 goal at Leicester City and allowed another plum fixture to drift by without profit.

In truth, this is typical of Lukaku as a Fantasy asset.

He can rarely be relied upon to deliver according to fixture; his points arrive in bouts, with his form remaining devilishly difficult to predict.

Everton are scoring goals, and the schedule remains favourable, but this is not necessarily a signpost for sustained returns from Lukaku.

Mason Holgate
Part of a three-man backline in the 2-0 win at Leicester City, the 4.0 valued defender claimed more than 35,000 new owners ahead of the trip to the KCOM Stadium, also earning a place on our Scout Picks bench.

But Koeman’s decision to depart from a winning formation and revert back to a 4-2-3-1 relegated Holgate to the bench, rendering his future as a Fantasy asset uncertain once more.

Koeman hinted that he will change personnel again for the visit of Southampton to Goodison Park on Monday.; it remains to be seen if that finds Holgate recalled and revived.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I have said it time and time again - Lukaku is the type of guy you put in your team and just leave him there. Don't captain him and don't sub him. He will get you 18 goals a season. With hindsight this would have been a good strikeforce to have from GW1 and without the price rises it would have been affordable too:

      Ibra - Costa - Lukaku

In seasons gone by, maybe you could get away with that but with his price, I don't think you can consider him a season keeper. Especially without being a captain pick. There is certainly games I would consider him for the armband, but not this gw with the options available

£9m for 18 goals a season plus the odd assist is pretty good value IMO.

out of interest, have you had him all season? And plan to leave him there?

this season there is more options than ever before, and to totally commit a player for the whole season is difficult. By transferring him in and out, I would guess you could hit more than half them goals in less than half the games

In Telegraph Fantasy Football I have. In FPL no - because I fell for the Aguero / Ibra bandwagon at the beginning of the season. If there is one thing I have learnt it is that price does make a difference - £13m for Aguero was too much this season especially with no cheapies like we have had in prior years (Alli, Kane, Mahrez, Vardy, Austin etc.).

I am looking at a front line of Ibra-Costa-Lukaku now (need to transfer in Lukaku and downgrade Siggy).

In games with limited transfers, you can certainly be more patient, you have to tbh. FPL is really a different story with transfers, Wildcards making moves more accessible. Price fluctuations also important.

Aguero price is steep but couldn't argue with it in the beginning. I still think he will have a big part to play in successful fpl managers plans.

    PL only

Sanchez at Arsenal: 41 goals in 82 games
Hazard at Chelsea: 50 goals in 155 games
Costa at Chelsea: 45 goals in 71 games
Aguero at City: 112 goals in 162 games
Ibra at Utd: 12 goals in 17 games
Kane at Spurs: 57 goals in 96 games
Lukaku at Everton: 53 goals in 122 games

With those records you would say go with Ibra, Aguero, Costa and Sanchez. But I have a middling team value so would probably go with Ibra, Costa, Lukaku and Sanchez.

Those records are not comparing apples with apples though.

Hazard had a season off last year and was very young when he came to the PL first. He is also playing a more forward position this season with less defensive duties.

Kane was also very young starting out and still is but he has shown great consistency.

Costa was a senior player and hit the ground running with some incredible form shown by fabregas in particular to help him to an astonishing early total.

Ibra is an older established player and expected to hit the ground running

Sanchez was an established player but his goal record suffers from a lot of his time being spent on the wings.

Lukaku has played most of those games as a young player with many coming as a sub and in struggling teams.

Kun and costa are probably the only players (possibly Ibra too) who started as an established player in the PL and has played a consistent position in a consistently strong team and who's record is likely to remain very similar. All others have factors which are likely to mean their form will go up or down in the coming seasons.

The simple one for me is go with my gut more.

There were a couple of occasions this season where taking a risk -4 or another taking a risky -8 involving removing Kun, would have benefitted me well over 50 points in total. They were a risk, but my gut was telling me it was the right move, but I talked myself of out it.

This week my gut told me to keep Kane and not sell for Costa, and save an FT. This was definitely against the popular thinking. Looking likely to go for Aguero as a result now :-).

New year's resolution in fantasy football terms to carry on making gut instinct decisions rather than looking at stats all the time. Gameweek 17. I wanted to bring in a cheap third striker at just 4.4 million went for Burnley Barnes. Gw 17 5pts,Gw 18 2pts,Gw 19 11pts. Only taken two minus 4's so far this season, personally i dont like taking them. Hope to keep them down to a minimum in 2017.

    Lost on last page

    Hi FFS community...

    Really need your help....

Would you say it's better to have a 5th mid like carrick or coquelin... at 4.3m

Or a 4.2m midfielder who will never even cover me for the 2 points carrick or coq will provide... but allow me to have cheap defenders like ake, kinglesy and Amat of Swansea who will play?

    Basically

4.2 midfielder and ake, Love, Kingsley

    Or

Coqelin, ake, Amat Kingsley.... on WC, really happy with rest of team

I could swap Antonio to snodgrass and tweak rest of team accordingly

Def 4.3, De Roon for example is nailed and does get the odd goal (albeit aware he's now at 4.4 he was 4.3 for a long time)

      Can't see where you're saying you'd spend extra £0.1m?

I would always want at least 4 def that play (3 decent; 2 cheepies) and 5 mids.

Thanks guys..... currently on p jones, mcauley, ake, chambers, Kingsley.... and 4.3 is Clayton... although carrick and coq look better...

Playing foster all the way with jaku as 2nd keeper.... it was grant but I simply can't live with 2 Swansea def and a 4.2 mid

        Make sense?

          Team is

          Foster. Jaku

          Jones. McAuley. Ake. Chambers. Kingsley

          Hazard. Sanchez. Antonio, Lallana. Clayton

          Ibra

That's a decent team. I like Clayton for the 5th mid slot. Could get you 3 every now and again with a clean sheet, plays every week.

    Heaton Pickford
    Alonso Rose Valencia Pieters Amat
    Sanchez Hazard Ozil Eriksen Kightly
    Ibra Origi Carroll

    1 FT 0 Bank

    Currently thinking of Origi+ Rose> Benteke + Barragan /Chambers(-4)

Boro have Nice fixtures in next 4
    Could get 2-3 Cs
Origi.not nailed and Very gpod chance of being benched

Not astounded by that. He gets 18 goals a season for around £9m - not bad value. Just you can't captain him - because he is not a flat track bully - he scores against anyone. He will probably score a brace next week.

    Go 3-4-3

    Heaton - Grant
    Alonso - McAuley - Holebas - Ake - 3.9
Sanchez - Eriksen - Lallana - Phillips - (de Roon)
    Ibra - Costa - "Kun"

Or 3-5-2 .. It looks stronger than I initially thought.

    Heaton - Grant
    Alonso - McAuley - Holebas - Ake - 3.9
    Sanchez - Eriksen - Lallana - "Hazard" - "Sterling"
    Ibra - Costa (Anichebe)

Benteke dropping in price has gave me a transfer headache (wanted to bring hI'm in but was 0.1m short. So...

    A) Defoe and Capone to Rondon & Cabaye (I already own Phillips) -4
    B) Defoe to Benteke

I already had Benteke in place before Pards was sacked and before the last game where he missed his pen and looked crap. So my route is set. Had I had that info then I may have chosen the other option, particularly if Cabaye is now on pens. However quite happy sitting on B still.
