Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 21

Key figures from the Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur ranks are expected to dominate our Gameweek 21 Captain Poll, backed by strong form and fixtures.

The Gunners travel to a Swansea City outfit that has conceded 23 goals in front of their own fans, which is set to garner keen interest in Alexis Sanchez (11.9).

The Chilean has delivered attacking returns in four successive road trips and, with 10 goals on his travels, Sanchez is the Premier League’s leading scorer away from home.

Olivier Giroud’s (8.6) form is proving difficult to ignore for Arsene Wenger and FPL managers alike.

The Frenchman has notched three goals and two assists in his last trio of league starts and also netted the weekend FA Cup winner at Preston.

It remains to be seen whether Giroud will keep his starting berth with Theo Walcott (7.5) expected to return to the matchday squad but, based on recent performances, Wenger would be brave to oust his in-form target man.

The craft of Mesut Ozil (9.5) could prove an interesting alternative on his expected recovery from illness. Before missing the last two fixtures, the playmaker had produced two goals and a pair of assists in five appearances for his 7.3% ownership.

It is worth noting, though, that Swansea City may have a greater focus on defence under new boss Paul Clement. Arsenal are the first visitors to the Liberty Stadium under Clemant’s stewardship, a factor that might just disrupt the form guide.

Spurs’ home encounter with West Brom is likely to attract votes for on-fire midfield pairing Dele Alli (8.5) and Christian Eriksen (8.6), and, to a lesser extent, Harry Kane (10.9).

Having acquired over 300,000 new owners ahead of Gameweek 21, Alli is undisputedly a hot property on the back of his six goals in three festive fixtures.

Eriksen’s hot streak is also difficult to resist: the Dane boasts five double-digit FPL point hauls over his last eight Gameweeks.

Having blanked in his last three home matches, the 13.8% owned Kane is struggling to compete for attention as he lives in the shadow of Spurs’ explosive midfield options.

However, a brace and assist away to Watford in Gameweek 19 served as a powerful reminder of his captaincy potential and sets him up as a differential candidate this time around.

West Brom will be no pushovers, however, having conceded just 10 goals on their travels – only Chelsea and Spurs (nine apiece) boast a superior defensive record on the road.

Elsewhere, Jermain Defoe (7.8)’s consistency could make him a safe armband option as Sunderland welcome a Stoke City side that has conceded 19 away goals.

The veteran marksman has 11 goals to his name and netted twice in his previous home appearance: a 2-2 draw with Liverpool.

Chelsea’s visit to Leicester City boosts the prospects of 44.4% owned Diego Costa (10.7). The Spain international has eight goals on the road and collides with a backline that has conceded twice in four of their last five at the King Power Stadium.

Interest in Costa’s team-mate Eden Hazard (10.4) could be limited, however: only two of the Belgian’s nine goals have arrived away from Stamford Bridge.

With just seven goals conceded in ten Goodison Park encounters, Everton’s strong home record is set to temper interest in players from visitors Manchester City.

In saying that, Sergio Aguero (12.8)’s record of four braces in seven away appearances should ensure the 21.6% owned Argentine garners some interest, even if he has relinquished penalty duties to Yaya Toure.

Another usual Captain Poll favourite, Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.6), also endures a testing tie, when Manchester United welcome Liverpool to Old Trafford.

The last time the two sides met, at Anfield back in Gameweek 8, it was a 0-0 stalemate, although the 43.4% owned Swede has since delivered attacking returns in each of his last five outings.

Bournemouth’s Junior Stanislas (5.1) presents an intriguing budget differential from midfield ahead of his visit to Hull City.

The Tigers are conceding more shots in the box at home than any other side, with new manager Marco Silva surely seeking to stem that tide as a first priority.

Stanislas, who has attacking returns in his last two starts, scored a brace and two assists last time he faced the Humberside outfit, at the Vitality Stadium back in Gameweek 8.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Assume this has been done to death since yesterday but Pedro playing left wing back clearly causes an issue for us Alonso owners. I also have Bellerin. Having done my FT already, I am fearing the worst!!

Was at the west ham game and he was playing extremely deep.. almost a 3rd center back at times.

Pens are nice but I think this would still put me off.

    Choose on Wildcard:

    A) Rose (2 Ycs away from 2 game supension) &
Alonso (Ake possibly a threat to his position)

    B) Walker & Luiz

    Appreciate your thoughts!

Post fail. I'm facing he same dilemma on WC with Rose and Walker. I'm on Rose purely because of how far forward he gets. Can always sell for Walker if he gets banned.

He's bound to get it soon. Id rather wait and then get him for Walker after.

I'm pretty happy with my team but i hate missing the bandwagons and the giroud train is in full flow!

Any reason to change this team? even if its tiny changes for future weeks like swap a 6.1> 6.2 type thing

    Foster / jakupovic
    Alonso, Rose, Daniels, Ake, Holgate
Sanchez, Lallana, Alli, Phillips, De Roon
    Defoe, Costa, Ibrahimovic

Should i stick with this for now?

I'm never a fan of jumping on bandwagons unless it really is too good to be true!

I feel that every player has their ceiling regarding goals, assists and FPL points for the season and therefore don't think its worth bringing in players who have 'had their day'.

Who do you feel are the main players who have overperformed this season and maybe 'had their day'?

Obvious examples this season could be Sanchez, Alli, Lallana, Costa, Ibrahimovic and Defoe.

All with over 100 points already surely at least 2 of those players won't be able to keep their current points per game levels up in the second half of the season.

I feel like Lallana's output may be unsustainable. Defoe's too.

Defoe, and maybe Alli, from that list. The others, as long as their clubs keep a decent level of form, should end up with 200+pts.

I think sanchez's income spends on ho along giroud is favoured as he doesn't have nearly as much impact from the left compared to upfront.

Costa's points should be consistent but it depends as recently teams seem to be bringing it to chelsea and it all depends on they deal with it.

Lallana and allí are very similar. they are always in the mix but one day it could be 2 goals and an assist the other a yellow card and thats it.

i believe defoe will still provide decent points but i think other strikers will become more favourable.

    Important question..
I already have 3 Chelsea players which is courtois, hazard and costa..
I also had Ake but now he's a Chelsea player. So currently my team has 4 Chelsea players. When I go in the transfer template it tells me that I need to choose on 3 players from the same team. On the my team template everything seems to be OK with all 4 players.. I wondering if I leave it as is I will get POINTS?

Morgan Schneiderlin has passed a medical with Everton, he has said goodbye to UTD teammates and the move should be completed shortly. [MEN]

I dont know why Mou did not even give him a chance. Sure, he is not world class, but everything is better than Fellaini.

Yeah it is a strange one isn't it.

His distribution is not what it needs to be for a top level team and his positional strength is not good enough for a top level team either (he looked great at saints when Wanyama was cleaning up behind him).

Maybe JM saw Fellaini as a better man to defend a lead due to his aerial presence when teams were lumping balls into the box?

I don't think fellaini has got much of a chance to nail a spot as a out and out midfielder either tbf

With the recent additions, who do we see as the most nailed Chelsea defenders?

IMO it goes in order of safest to least safest:
      Dave
      Luiz
      Cahill/alonso

    Hey lads.

I've been on holiday for the last couple of weeks and that has sadly meant that I have neglected my FPL team......

Could I have some thoughts and suggestions on what transfer/s to do to fix this team? I have 2FT and 0.1mil itb.

    Grant (Heaton)
    Alonso, Valencia, Holebas (Cedric, Evans)
    Sanchez, Eriksen, Lallana, Siggy (Phillips)
    Ibra, Costa, Origi

Looks fine to me. I'd downgrade Cedric and replace Origi with Rondon or Defoe.

      Cedric to Chambers
      Siggy to Stanislas
      Origi to Giroud/Defoe

Who should I replace Ake with, given that he's unlikely to play at Chelsea? Got 1.0 in the bank.

Other defenders are: McCauly, Alonso, Friend, Valencia. Cech in goal.

    Thanks,

With that defence I'd keep hold of him for a while and see if he gets in the team

Not sure if it's been posted already but an update from Allardyce re injuries a couple days ago:

    PUBLISHED

    15:24 6th January 2017

Sam Allardyce reeled off the list of Palace players currently out injured at the start of his pre-match press conference, emphasising the strain being put on his squad ahead of the trip to Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.

The manager listed all the players out of action then discussed the severity of their injuries at the top of his pre-Bolton media duties, before revealing the good news that a number of key players would likely be back in contention by the time Palace face West Ham United in the Premier League.

"Dann, McArthur, Wickham, Benteke, Souare, Mandanda - we don't know how long they're going to be," he said. "There's some variation, some longer than others. Dann and McArthur should be back reasonably quickly, Connor's long-term, Benteke should be okay for next week if he plays with an injection, Mandanda we're not so sure about.

So Hennessey is still an option at 4.3 as Mandanda is still injurd.

        Yeah seems that way.

Benteke the interesting one for me - he could possibly play this week or next, so I may not have to use a transfer to get him out if he's not injured long term. Some good fixtures coming up.
