The Watchlist Updated – The Forwards

In our final analysis of the latest Watchlist standings following their festive overhaul, we now take time out to assess the latest movements among the forwards.

For those new to the site, the Watchlist is designed to offer a view on our current mid-term player recommendations, based on the prospects spanning the next four-to-six Gameweeks.

You will find our current Watchlist standings in your right-hand menu on desktop and mobile.

There’s no change at the top of the rankings, with Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Chelsea’s Diego Costa retaining their spots at the summit.

Both players lead the forward standings in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) on 123 points apiece, although Ibrahimovic is clearly the man in form.

Having climbed in value to 11.6 on the back of nine goals and four assists in his last nine starts, the Swede’s upcoming schedule (LIV, sto, HUL, lei, WAT) also gives him a slight edge.

There’s no doubt that Costa – whose FPL price has fallen to 10.7 following a recent one-match suspension – remains a reliable source for attacking returns, though, having blanked in only three of his last 13 matches.

Nonetheless, the Chelsea forward has only managed two double-digit hauls over that period, while the forthcoming fixture list for Antonio Conte’s side (lei, HUL, liv, ARS, bur, SWA) is mixed.

Ibrahimovic has penalties, free-kicks and has provided five double-digit returns, with a top score of 15. This compares favourable to Costa who has just three returns of 12 points so far and lacks dead-ball duties to bolster his appeal.

The Swede sat out United’s EFL Cup victory over Hull City on Tuesday but is expected to return to contention following illness for the Gameweek 21 collision with Liverpool.

Harry Kane sees his stock fall slightly this time around as a result of four blanks in six.

The Tottenham Hotspur frontman has retreated under the shadow of midfield team-mates Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli over the past month, who are both considerably cheaper on the budget at 8.6 and 8.5 respectively.

Kane’s 16-point haul against Watford in Gameweek 19 provided a reminder of his explosive potential, though, and with spot-kick duties in the locker, the potential for double-digit hauls remains.

The festive period was very productive for Jermain Defoe, who registered another three goals, taking his tally to 11 for the season.

The Sunderland forward surges back up our rankings as David Moyes’ side prepare to take on Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace in the next four.

Still available at a meagre 7.8 in FPL, it remains a surprise that Defoe sits in just 25.4% of FPL squads, given that he is the joint-sixth highest point scorer in the game, with 113 points accrued.

Everton’s Romelu Lukaku and Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud both enjoy rises, having flourished over the festive spell.

Lukaku returned to form with two goals and an assist in his last three starts, and looks a solid option as a second forward given his 9.5 price tag in FPL.

The Toffees also face one of the softest upcoming schedules (MCI, cpl, sto, BOU, mid, SUN) over the next six Gameweeks.

No forward scored more points than Giroud over the holiday fixtures, and having started the last three matches, the Frenchman’s form protects his pitch time ahead of an enticing run of fixtures (swa, BUR, WAT, che, HUL).

Theo Walcott is thought to be closing on a return following a calf injury, though, so away from home, there remains the prospect that Arsene Wenger will utilise the movement of Alexis Sanchez in the lone striker role.

Giroud is perhaps more suited to home fixtures to help break down a deep defensive line – the Emirates fixtures with Burnley, Watford and Hull City certainly look tailored-made for the Frenchman, then.

Man City’s Sergio Aguero suffers another drop in stock despite making a return from his four-match suspension with a goal against Burnley.

Aguero started from the bench against the Clarets, and with rotation an ongoing concern regarding all City players, it’s questionable whether the Argentine, priced at 12.8 in FPL, will provide better value than the likes of Ibrahimovic and Costa, who look nailed on to start every match for their respective clubs.

In addition, having seen him surrender spot-kick duties in Friday’s FA Cup thrashing of West Ham, confidence in Aguero suffers a further blow.

Crystal Palace’s Gameweek 20 clash against Swansea had been earmarked as a “make or break” encounter for Christian Benteke, following a run of four successive blanks.

But after being forced off at half-time with a shoulder injury, the former Liverpool striker failed to provide the goods, and as a result, suffers another damaging fall in our rankings.

The Eagles forward is expected to be fit to face West Ham United in Gameweek 21, but given that Palace will be without chief creator Wilfried Zaha, who has departed for the Africa Cup of Nations, it’s no surprise that Benteke has been subject to further heavy FPL sales.

Middlesbrough’s Alvaro Negredo is also heading in the wrong direction, with blanks against Burnley and Leicester City over the festive period denting our confidence in the Spaniard.

‘Boro’s short-term fixtures (wat, WHM, WBA) remain reasonably friendly, but with Aitor Karanka’s side still struggling for creativity, it’s likely that chances will continue to be at a premium for Negredo.

Two possible alternatives to the ‘Boro striker are West Bromwich Albion’s Salomon Rondon and Burnley’s Andre Gray.

Rondon did only muster an assist from the plum home fixture against Hull City last time out, but with the fixture list (tot, SUN, mid, STO, whm, BOU) remaining favourable over the coming period, the 6.8-rated Venezuelan remains a viable option as a third forward.

Having reclaimed a spot in the Burnley side, starting the last five matches, Gray returns to the Watchlist this week after scoring four goals over the festive period.

The Clarets striker looks set to offer solid value at just 6.2 in FPL, although Sean Dyche’s side do face Southampton and Arsenal next, before kinder match-ups against Leicester City and Watford.

I've not been impressed with Everton's spending since they got former Leicester director of football/scout, Steve Walsh. They are about to sign an Algerian, a french player and a lower league forward. I mean who has ever achieved success with those kind of buys

Hiya lads, a little help please, on WC:

    Team at the moment is:

    Heaton - Robinson
    XXX - Rose - Baines - Chambers - Holgate
    Phillips - Alli - Eriksen - Sanchez - XXX
    XXX - Costa - Ibra

    A) Azpi + Pogba/Coutinho + Barnes in a 3-5-2

    B) Mustafi/Brunt + Stanislas + Giroud in a 3-4-3

Opinions would be most appreciated, cheers 🙂

      Haha you're having my problems.

I'm flip-flopping but I like A in the short term. Coutinho won't necessarily start at the weekend and will need a little time to get up to speed, but he is the better long term option.

haha yeah it's a toughie ain't it, i've only decided to WC now because team was in disarray and sitting at over 600k, not what i'm used to at all.
Yeah agree about Coutinho, can be someone else like pogba in short term, just the 352 option is so alluring!
I am really liking my Giroud inclusion, but it's just never known if he'll start or not, and i don't like uncertainty 🙂

The recent article on HoF leader Jay Egersdorff & last nights scoutcast got me thinking and looking at options.

There's a load of numbers coming up but I make my unconclusive and underwhelming point in the final 2 paragraphs. 🙂

3-5-2 (usually my preference) has a lot of support this season as witmessed by JE and his use of Diomande.
3-4-3 Perennial favourite of many of the veterans
4-4-2/ 4-3-3. Often overlooked but viable option but one that Mark touched on in the scoutcast.

Looking at top points scorers over each position here's a breakdown of players who have scored over 100. 90 & 80 points this season.
    100 90 80
    Def 0 2 5
    Mid 7 12 20
    For 4 4 7
Those figures to my eye would favour my usual 3-5-2 but let's add the Value (form) column available on FPL transfer page. This factors in players prices to give 'value per pound spend' and I always find useful and sometimes enlightening.
This will have form of over 1 and also form of over 0.9
    1 0.9
    Def 9 13
    Mid 4 6
    For 0 3
This will favour as it usually does the defenders.
So here's a shortlist of players in each position that are hi-scoring, FFS faves or on the watchlist.
There are plenty of choices and of course I've missed a few.

Def - Chelsea, Spurs, Bellerin. Kosc. Jones, Valencia, Clyne, Loveren, McCauley, Brunt, Coleman, Baines, Van Anholt, Daniels, VvD.

Mid - Sanchez, Hazard, Alli, Eriksen, Mane, Firm, Cout, Lallana, KdB, Sterling, Pog, Ozil, and a whole raft of lower priced options and out of form like Phillips, Siggy, Payet, Martial, Willian etc.

For - The 4 over 100 :- Costa, Ibra, Defoe, Lukaku.
    Then Aguero, Kane, Giroud, Benteke
With the likes of Rashford, Rondon, Vardy and a few others who will come into the reckoning 2nd half of the season.

The value option of having 4 or 5 'big' defenders or attacking options like VAnholt, Brunt Daniels has great appeal and with a budget 5th midfieder and/or budget 3rd forward can allow having the top midfield and forward options.

The 5 across 'big' midfield can certainly be done with very good options for 3 defenders and 2 attackers.

The appeal of 3 of the 100+ attackers is obvious especially when 2 of the 4 are below 10m.
    (getting bored now...)

My point (finally) is this season I would argue has far greater choices in formations and players than any of the last 3 or 4 seasons at least and I'm don't think there is any particular preffered or obvious way to play it.
You can make an equally strong argument for any of the above options. of course this can change in only a matter of weeks but this season I don't think so.
I reckon team value may be less relevant this 2nd half of the season as there are ways of using that money in different ways.

In short, this has been a great season with more options and challenges than we've seen in a years.
I'm keeping my options open, certainly when we approach the DGW and WC if like me you're saving it.

I don't think you can play FPL strategically to have a specific formation, depends who you want to bring in (Who you think's going to score points) and then what position they play. For example if Lukaku was someone I wanted now, I'd have to look around my team and make the decision to either downgrade Costa/Ibra, or upgrade Rondon, but it depends where the money is stacked up in your team. I'm playing 3-4-3 at the moment but could easily turn into a 3-5-2 next week.

3 at the back for me is the only way to go, some week's defenders are great but you'll lose out long term in those weeks where attackers are doing all the business, when defenders do well you won't gain as much as when your attackers do well on the overall population,

Same here, I generally work at a playable 15 so my formation does vary although I wouldn't instinctively favour a 3-5-2.
At the moment with Defoe, Ibra & Costa I'm 3-4-3.
The scoutcast did re-awaken that 4 at the back option which I had a look at but would maybe consider at some point.

I like your way of playing, I absolutely hate having any player that isn't an option for me to play, there's value in having as many bigger hitters by sacrificing the little guys but you'll need them at some point. If my defense had better fixtures this week I'd be playing 4-4-2 and benching both Rondon & Phillips.

Listening to the scoutcast on my way home from work tonight, forgot my headphones!

Good post - productive day off 🙂

I think having the ability to be dynamic is a key factor this season, but I think that TV is important in enabling you to do so. TV is definitely not the 'be all' as there are a lot of good inexpensive options available, but it does allow you to be stronger with selections when shifting dynamic.

It may not be important right now, but we have seen that as the season goes on, the historical form players seem to rise to the occasion. If this does happen in the 2nd half of the season, then TV will be an edge.

Of course, more money - more options, the better.
My TV is ok but maybe a factor if I was set on Aguero. I just think there are options available to have a strong team & formation without having 107/108m this year.
I guess you could make this arguement any season though! 🙂

I think you're right. Ageuro could be the deciding factor on TV this year. I also liked the Jay Egersdorff article - brought me back to the fundamentals of the game and just made the decision making simpler.

Thanks for the post - a lot of good responses generated.

New Swansea boss Paul Clement is looking to kickstart their survival bid with moves for Tottenham midfielder Tom Carroll and Norwich defender Martin Olsson, according to the Telegraph.

Carroll, 24, has been on the fringes of the Spurs team this season and could be available for £8million, while the paper reports that Swansea have agreed a £5m fee for left-back Olsson.

My gut feeling is the squad is a little bit healthy to pick him at the moment, but he's definitely not signed to become bench fodder. A niggle to any of Silva KDB Aguero or Sterling should lock him down nicely as a pick....but he'll still play some times and will spell trouble for those four for assured minutes.

Maybe he'll serve us best when he scores. Plenty will buy him only to be let down the next match.

He smells of Iheanacho or Origi but for a lot more money

I see him mixing in and out for the near future. 20 mins here, 15 there. Maybe a start in a cup match. At least four games or so until I can see him getting more than 20 consistently. Can't wait to see him play, though. Have only seen snippets. He vs the Prem should be interesting.

You have a decent starting XI this week, leave it as is, monitor Ake this week then save the transfer next week, then maybe downgrade Haz and get rid of Ake & Campbell.

Looking for some more opinions on my WC drafts. I'm set on most options but still debating five players:

    Heaton, Robinson
    Rose, Baines, Brunt, Chambers, -------
    Sanchez, Eriksen, Ali, Philips, --------
    -------,-------,-------

    A) Pieters, Hazard, Ibra, Defoe, Barnes
    B) Daniels, Stanislas, Ibra/Costa, Defoe, Giroud
    C) Bellerin, Stanislas, Ibra, Costa, Barnes,
    D) Amat, De Roon, Ibra, Costa, Defoe.

hey, replied above btw, but from those i like C if Bellerin is good to start this weekend.
I do have Stanislas in mine as well at the moment, but something just puts me off about his propensity to get injured.

Cheers all! And thanks for the Love suggestion.

I think D is the most solid and probably the best source of long term points...but I'm also drawn to C and B because they are fun! I'm a big daily fantasy football player and I expect Giroud and Stan to score very well over the next three GWs, so I've got a real desire to incorporate them into a more of a punty version.

Too many options, consider more yourself first. However I think solid 2 premium strikers and a 4.0 defender should work, since you already have 4 defense that start and a solid 4 mid. 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 is completely up to you. So D) would be my choice but it's always up to you to make the final decisions I think

Think I'm losing my way on the wildcard:

    Foster 3.9
    Luiz Valencia Dann Brunt Smith
    Sanchez Eriksen Alli Phillips Stanislas
    Agüero Ibra Barnes

    .2 left over

Too much in defence? Smith is the 4.7 Bournemouth one.

I wouldn't get Aguero, he'll get big scores from tie to time but so will cheaper strikers.

He will be rotated sometimes and it seems he is not on pens anymore

Don't see the point in having five very good defenders either, but your team looks nice anyway

I think some of the defensive picks are a little odd, although the midfield and strike force are superb. I'd swap Luiz out for Walker, Dann for Chambers and Smith for Daniels. Perhaps a Valencia downgrade to Jones would enable a better keeping situation.

Guess Luiz is just an excuse to have a Chelsea defender.

Dann, Allardyce defender who's a threat from SP.

Eriksen AND Alli, choose one! You've got too much in defense IMO, Valencia to Jones and Smith to a 4.0 or at least someone with better fixtures from GW24(ish) onwards, as you'll be calling on that 5th defender then, at the moment you're going to be playing the first four over the next 4 gameweeks but when WBA and Palace fixtures start to dry up (Same time as Bournemouth, you're going to need to make changes)

This is true, I think he's lost parts of the dressing room and there's a big cultural divide from what I've heard.

That is a very nice team. I think perhaps Hazard out after Hull at home might be a means of opting for Aguero long term, although I'm not sure if getting rid of Ibra or Costa is advisable. Daniels for Holebas makes sense - although the quality of your defence will cause a benching headache. Daniels attacking returns are impressive though and the next three fixtures are wonderful.

    Alonso owners

If he becomes a rotation risk with Ake it might actually help your team with a couple transfers.

    I'm looking at

    Alonso to Baines
    Lallana to Coutinho

Timing could work out quite nicely soon as well with Coutinho's return to fitness and some great fixtures for Everton after this week.

Get rid of Firmino for someone like Stanislas and then you can upgrade Pieters or Ake.

Will give Firmino the Swansea game then see what I can do from there. Thinking of this for 2FT after GW22:

Firmino > Sterling (Decent fixtures, although I don't like owning him)
        Ake > Baines

Then Lallana in for Sterling around GW28

With the tough fixtures Liverpool will be facing, Worth considering Lallana - any other player?

Coutinho scored two against Arsenal and got an assist against Chelsea - looks a big game player this season so I'm putting some trust in him for these fixtures

The narrative is no, I'll be doubling-up, those fixtures after @MUN aren't as bad as people think, then they get very very good.

Games against Swansea and Hull should yield plenty of points for those who double up

Coutinho must after the next 5-6 fixtures i think. So Lallana-Coutinho the best option? Coutinho's price is also tempting

If you have Lallana @7.0 or 7.1 yes, that's what I'm doing, playing the real ppm v the prices.

Liverpool have one good fixture, one "bad". I'm bringing in Coutinho as Liverpool perform against the top 6.

    Anything need doing here?

    Grant (Jakupovic)

    Friend Ake Jones (Evans, Amat)

Sanchez (C) Hazard Lallana Phillips (De Roon)

    Aguero Benteke Zlatan

Anything worth doing here? Maybe AOA with defence looking risky this week?

I would be playing AoA every week with that defence!

Can you downgrade somewhere else to upgrade your defence? Hazard maybe?? Very top heavy.

After hull I'll downgrade haz and upgrade ake if he isn't playing west brom, boro and Utd are all defensively strong sides imo
