The Stock Check – Gameweek 29 – Sunday

Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen grab the goals as Tottenham prevail against Southampton without the injured Harry Kane. Manolo Gabbiadini limps off at the Lane as James Ward-Prowse and Ryan Bertrand stake a claim for our double Gameweek plans. Elsewhere, Sergio Aguero maintains his goal-a-game home record against Liverpool, while Antonio Valencia’s FPL form goes from strength to strength as a much-changed United breeze past Middlesbrough.

On the Rise

Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen
While Son Heung-min failed to take advantage of a role up front, the Spurs midfield duo delivered the goods yet again as Mauricio Pochettino’s men brushed aside the absence of Harry Kane to see off Southampton.

With Kane on the sidelines, Alli stepped up to convert a first-half penalty after he was initially felled in the box. Impressively, that’s his eleventh goal in the last 12 Gameweeks, showing just why the starlet is currently backed by 27% of FPL managers.

Post-match, though, his manager admitted there is no real pecking order in Kane’s absence, going on to say “everyone can take the penalty. Whoever wants to take it that’s fine by me”.

It remains to be seen if Alli retains spot-kick duties. Regardless, today’s outcome already delivered a blow to Son Heung-min and the 95,000+ who acquired the South Korean.

Meanwhile, sitting in just 14% of squads, Eriksen’s opener – a first goal since Gameweek 16 – kept his tally ticking over behind team-mate Alli in fourth spot in the FPL midfield standings.

Having also racked up eight assists in the previous 12, the Dane’s all-round contribution heightens the appeal of a Spurs double-up in the centre of the park ahead of a run that pits them against Burnley, Swansea City, Watford and Bournemouth in the next four rounds of fixtures.

Sergio Aguero
Handed an extended stay of execution by many due to Kane’s injury and Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s ban, Aguero remained in over 21% of FPL squads ahead of the visit from Liverpool.

Yet again, the Argentine delivered at home to the Anfield outfit – he’s now scored in all five Etihad league matches with them. Granted, his performance hardly smacked of someone at the top of their game yet with Kane and Ibrahimovic still missing for Gameweek 30, most Aguero owners will now be content to retain his serves as Pep Guardiola’s men pay visit to Arsenal’s unconvincing defence.

There’s no doubt, though, that a lack of explosive returns continues to cause concern – Aguero has now failed to produce double-figures in each of his last 11 league outings.

Given that he travels to Chelsea in Gameweek 31 – at a time when Ibrahimovic will then be available for United’s home clash with Everton – he’ll need to deliver at the Emirates to avoid an exodus.

James Ward-Prowse, Ryan Bertrand
Combining for Southampton’s opener at White Hart Lane, the duo maintained their fine recent form ahead of a run that hands them 11 fixtures in the final nine Gameweeks.

Priced at just 5.0 and owned by a mere 0.3% of FPL managers, Ward-Prowse has started seven of the Saints’ previous eight league matches, with today’s strike meaning that he has bagged two goals and an assist in his last five league outings.

Supplying the cross for Ward-Prowse’s goal, Bertrand’s penchant for picking up points at both ends of the pitch has been remarkably impressive of late, with four assists and two clean sheets in Southampton’s last six.

Residing in just 2.1% of squads, the left-back continues to be overlooked due to a somewhat prohibitive price tag of 5.4 compared with Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens at 4.3 and 4.0 respectively.

Yet today’s display once again suggests that he could be worth the extra outlay once the double Gameweeks are confirmed.

Antonio Valencia
There can be little doubt – the United defender’s first goal of the season could barely be more fortuitous after a disastrous error from Victor Valdes allowed him the luxury of sealing a 3-1 win at the Riverside.

Nonetheless, today’s strike continued an excellent run of form that has now produced attacking or defensive returns in seven of the last eight league outings.

Snapped up by over 58,000 FPL managers ahead of Gameweek 29, Valencia sits in over 12% of squads and with Jose Mourinho’s side set to play 11 times in the remaining nine rounds of fixtures, his points potential at both ends of the pitch is likely to see the Ecuadorian emerge as a popular pick for our five-man defences.

Juan Mata
While Henrikh Mkhitaryan was named amongst the subs, Mata retained his starting role as Jose Mourinho made seven alterations to cope with the hectic schedule.

The Spaniard has now started four successive league matches, producing two goals and an assist during that period, having teed up Jesse Lingard for United’s second at the Stadium of Light.

Owned by a mere 3.2% of FPL managers, the playmaker is another who could play his way into contention for our Wildcards once the doubles are finally scheduled.

His acquisition does come with a caveat, though – Mourinho’s tendency for turning to physical replacements late on in matches means that Mata has managed 90 minutes on just one occasion this season.

In Decline

Manolo Gabbiadini
Having struck six times in four outings across all competitions since arriving at St Mary’s, Gabbiadini was on many Fantasy managers’ radars due to Southampton’s expected pair of double Gameweeks.

After limping off early in today’s loss at the Lane with a groin injury, the Italian’s 10% FPL owners – including the 7,000+ who have transferred him in since yesterday – are now fretting over his availability ahead of a schedule that hands him back-to-back home encounters against Bournemouth and Palace before travelling to Palace in Gameweek 32.

Priced at 6.9, his potential absence may send many back to the drawing board ahead of the doubles as we look elsewhere for value alternatives for our three-man frontlines.

Son Heung-min
As mentioned, the fact that Alli took on penalty duties in Sunday’s victory has already dented Son’s appeal. It was believed that the South Korean would be in the box-seat for spot-kicks in Kane’s absence, having shown his intent earlier in the season.

Away from that incident, Son also struggled to retain possession in the second period as the central striker and was withdrawn on 75 minutes, with Vincent Janssen impressing in his brief cameo late on.

With Son now set for long-haul flights over the international break, there could be some doubts over his pitch time in the Gameweek 30 visit to Burnley.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan
Devoid of the injured Paul Pogba and suspended Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Mourinho’s decision to omit the Armenian from his starting line-up for the trip to Middlesbrough raised a few eyebrows.

Citing the club’s busy schedule, the Red Devils’ boss instead relied on fringe players such as Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini and Jesse Lingard to help make the difference as Mkhitaryan warmed the bench throughout.

His decision vindicated with a 3-1 win, there are fears that Mourinho’s teamsheets will continue to cause concern for the run-in.

Mkhitaryan had previously started each of the last seven league matches he had been available for but today’s selection suggests that, with United still in with a shout of Europa League success, there is growing uncertainty over Mkhitaryan’s minutes once again.

Leave it for closer to deadline, but the only thing I dislike there is Brunt.

I actually want to get Defoe. Proven goalscorer playing for a relegation battling team. Their push for safety will come through him.

    2 FT, 3.1 itb.

Was toying with Cout and Brunt -> Alli + Valencia/Walker/Vert. Want to get Vardy to join the party but cant really sell any of the forwards. Scary thing is no Chelsea attack who are bound to be top captaincy options but CPL looks like have become better defensively.

I used mine last week. I put together what I would consider my ideal team for the coming weeks and had 11 players different to what I had at the time. To me, that was enough to warrant using my WC. Scored 27pts more than I would have if I had not used the WC, so at least for one week, it worked out.

Man U's make up games are at Man City and at SOU which I think they are unlikely to keep a CS. They also have Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs to play which likely won't Yield a CS either. From a premium GK, Lloris is probably a better option, but limits your Spurs attack if you already have Walker. I took a punt on Caballero, paired with Pickford. Will play Pickford the next few games, and then City's schedule turns pretty easy. They are not the greatest defensively, but have improved a bit of late. could backfire, but this is what I went with when I did my WC last week.

Pedro will be a much better asset than Hazard. The points difference is small when compared to the price.

You may be right Ryan. I'm having my hand forced by a mini league rival who just has Pedro as Chelsea cover.

Yeah the strikers and Redmond, Kaboul, Zaha. Expensive main keeper also.

If someone told me that was their team I'd ask if they still had their wildcard.

Are you dead set on going this week? There are far too many variables for me at the minute.

We have got fixtures yet and when we do they won't happen for a few gameweeks i just think it's pointless approaching a DGW three or four weeks out potentially half the team could be injured by the time it comes around. The last few weeks in the run up to the blank and body blank have proved this between injuries, suspensions, loss of form.

But each to their own i cant see me going in GW30 I don't see what benefit anyone is really potentially gaining by going this week but it seems to have gained momentum as the week to go.

            Thanks Tony, advice appreciated.

I'm not locked into playing the WC this week. I keep playing around with Wildcard teams and currently thinking I can gain more points in the 9 weeks left but still leave myself in a strong position to cover a lot of DGW players.

Everyone has taken the theory play it early very much on board i can see.

It has been pigeon holes as a play it now or play it in 36 decision by many. I don't see why though. If there is an arsenal / southampton DGW in say 33 I'd want to be loaded for that to transition in 34s doubles and maybe have the option of bench boosting then rather than 37.

I just don't think anything can be decided till fixtures come out and i don't think a DGW team can be set three or four weeks out and be completely effective by the time it arrives.

All things to consider and plenty of thinking to do.

I think waiting for the fixtures is the sensible thing to do.

I just hope we get them before the next deadline 🙂

The majority of my decisions are mini league basses really but the element of surprise on the wildcard is important to me.

I don't want my team to be imitable bar only team value. That i set this week they don't then they block that's no good to me making ground and in a grand unveil before a DGW

Morning all, just looking ahead how does:

Antonio & Gray > Vardy & De Roon for free look?

    Leaving me with:

    (Foster) - Pickford
    Alonso - Baines - Brunt - (Daniels) - (Love)
Mane - Alli - Siggy - King - (De Roon)
    Aguero(c) - Lukaku - Vardy(vc)

Thanks, probably wont pull the trigger till after any games have been played, but risky as I have exact cash.

Brunt is definitely on my chopping board, I'm just a little worried about not owning Vardy and in terms of team structure I dont like having so much cash tied up in Gray and/or King being my cheapest, thought it could be an opportunity to fix that. But yeah could be a bit of a wasteful move.

I'd probably do something with your defence first to be honest. Baines has Liverpool away, Brunt has Man U away and Daniels has SOU away. Your attack looks pretty solid even without Vardy.

    3. Jay_

I've never been so confused in FPL as I am now. A combo of poor management and bad luck has left me in a strange situation. Assuming Sanchez and Gabbi are out for a month and miss those 3 quick games in the space of a week gw30-32. Bare in mind they will both have 2 doubles to come by the time they're back.

Would you wildcard this? (-4, Llorente is placeholder for Ibra) 2.5m ITB

        -----------------Pickford-----------------
        Alonso Coleman Valencia Pieters
        ---Alli Sigurdsson Antonio King----
        ---------Ibrahimovic Lukaku----------
        ----------------------------------------------
        Jakupovic Gabbiadini Sanchez Brunt

        A) Wildcard, can't have over 19m worth of two injured players on bench. Being blinded by dgws.
        B) Just do Pieters to Walker, King is handy and go 4-4-2. Will want Gab/Sanchez for doubles.

I'm leaning B) But don't know if I'm just convincing myself that I could get away with benching them.

You too, I've always wondered what users I was up against in the league 😛

I have my WC and BB remaining, I'm thinking of using my WC during GW33. How about yourself?

I'm thinking the exact same 33. It should be ideal if it's the first DGW and if there's 34 doubles after as usual then event better.

I think going now is too far out to get an effective DGW team out on the pitch.

Do you play many cash leagues?

I agree, I would never play a WC so early before a DGW because of the terrible luck I've had with injuries over the years. Last year I got burned from picking players that were rotation risks, so I'm definitely going to choose more carefully this time.

I'm well on track to win €500 from this ML with the co-workers from my old job haha:

                                  https://fantasy.premierleague.com/a/leagues/standings/88800/classic

It was €50 in, but none of them take the game too seriously after the first couple of months. As it stands, I could win about €700-800 at the end of the season which is great going all in all. What MLs are you in?

My 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 6th leagues in the order shown on my page are my money ones.

I'm going well enough one is out of sight the other three i could win if i did that i could win £1000 which I'd be delighted with so fingers crossed.

Buy ins were £40, £20, £30, £20. So return on investment is solid. Standard has been better in them all so far and I've a bit of work to do yet.

That's good going, you've got a great chance of winning big.

The investment is definitely worth it all in all. If I had entered the same €50 league last season I would have completely blown everyone out of the water and won upwards of €700. I think I'm going to put a large proportion of my winnings (hopefully) towards entering more paid leagues next season.

I definitely want to get membership next season on here as well. There's way more people taking the game seriously this year and I'm going to want to take any advantage I can get.

I can only speak for myself and say i like the numbers in the members area. The ability to make your own tables with parameters etc is great. Apart from the the RMT projected scores and team stats etc are all fantastic.

What i would say about investment is look for local leagues rather than investing a pile into leagues on here. People can build a head of steam after a good year and think i want to enter more cash leagues but i generally wouldn't play cash against people on here as id rather play against the less informed and have more chance of winning. I like to weigh the positions paid to see if second place money is still good in case i run into a very good player and generally that has all seen me cash out decently the last few years now.

I definitely think it could be worth a shout. I would have gotten membership this year, but I've been completely swamped.

I agree, the only league that I've ever won outside of local leagues is the €1 entry league held by Epic Fail last season. I don't know why I enter leagues like FPL Updates each year, the chances of winning are slim to none. Finding reliable leagues often takes a good bit of time, but I'm going to but a lot into hunting them down next season. I don't think I'll be allowed to enter the leagues at my old job next season unfortunately. I've been at the top since pretty much the opening GWs.

That's unfortunately how it goes after being paid out in leagues I've been told that's it you won't be back next year which makes me laugh really lol

One of them I've came second in first year and won the last two I'm expecting the bullet from soon but I'll see how it goes.

Yeah do the scouting i like an idea of the number of players / prize split and can usually gauge the level of FPL player. Although standards are on the up for sure.

Good luck anyway. Must hit my cart.

It makes the game more interesting for sure, though I must say I like winning money at the end of the season.

You too pal, I'll be keeping an eye out for you in the Irish Contingent 😛
