The Watchlist – Valdes Blow Promotes Gibson

The impending double Gameweek has a major influence on our latest Watchlist refresh, with assets from three teams – Manchester United, Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough – gaining temporary boosts in the reckoning.

However, Monday night’s clash with Arsenal delivered some concerning news for those considering Boro defensive coverage, with goalkeeper Victor Valdes missing out with a rib injury.

Interim boss Steve Agnew declared he had “literally no idea” on a likely return for the keeper, who was due to be assessed following the training ground setback. While we wait on the prognosis, the uncertainty in the Boro goal diminishes both Valdes and replacement Brad Guzan as options.

With Fabio forced off with a knee injury against Arsenal, and match fitness perhaps an issue for returning duo Calum Chambers and George Friend, ever-present Ben Gibson strengthens his spot at the top our defender rankings.

That also means that Palace’s Wayne Hennessey, who has amassed 37 points and four clean sheets from their last seven fixtures, cements his spot at the summit of our keeper rankings.

He’ll face two strong attacking sides in Gameweek 34 – Liverpool and Spurs – but the recent shut-out against Arsenal will give managers hope that Sam Allardyce’s revived defensive unit can claim another scalp. If not, Hennessey’s propensity to earn save points – demonstrated by his 10 stops in the recent victory at Stamford Bridge – provides a handy fallback.

Also rising in our keeper ranks is Southampton’s Fraser Forster. The 5.0 target has a difficult single Gameweek 34 fixture away to Chelsea, although that’s followed by a match-up with Hull City at St Mary’s, which then precedes consecutive doubles in 36 and 37.

Monday night’s Riverside Stadium clash was also notable for the return of Petr Cech, who had missed three outings with a calf injury. Arsenal have only kept two clean sheets in ten – even conceding to Middlesbrough – but they face Leicester City next Wednesday and join Southampton in offering double Gameweeks 36 and 37. Cech, therefore, earns a tentative boost in our rankings, although Forster remains our preferred route into the Gameweek 36 double.

Elsewhere, Manchester United’s David de Gea missed his first match of the season at Sunderland, but returned in Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Chelsea to maintain a high Watchlist ranking.

Jose Mourinho’s defence have kept an outstanding six clean sheets in nine and while the trips to Burnley and rivals City will test their resilience, De Gea could well be in line to deliver rare save points – particularly in the latter fixture.

Further down the ladder, there’s little movement for Burnley’s Tom Heaton or Hull City’s Eldin Jakupovic, who provide assured options with a strong set of upcoming fixtures – albeit without the boost of a double Gameweek.

Meanwhile, Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford remains on a simmer.

A popular back-up to Heaton in our squads, the Black Cat can offer a double Gameweek 37, although with relegation looming prior to those fixtures, motivation could become a factor. Desperate for goals and victories, Pickford’s lack of clean sheets is set to remain an issue, with save points his main source of income. The youngster has produced 36 saves in his last seven outings – more than any other FPL keeper.

In defence, the aforementioned Gibson is chased by Maya Yoshida and will doubtless give way to the Southampton option once Gameweek 34 has been cleared. Boosted by his two double Gameweeks, Yoshida has produced two clean sheets, a goal and seven bonus points in his past four Gameweeks.

Elsewhere, Patrick van Aanholt provides a differential addition to our defensive options.

The Dutchman has scored four goals this season and makes a timely return for Palace’s twin fixtures. Introduced from the bench against Leicester City on Saturday, we’re backing him to oust Jeffrey Schlupp and retain a starting birth for the run-in. Joel Ward, as a most unglamorous 4.8 option, is replaced in our rankings, then, although he remains an alternative for those unwilling to risk the returning Van Aanholt.

Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia is also replaced, as team-mate Eric Bailly is swapped in, with the Ecuadorian’s starts over Gameweek 34 and the Old Trafford meeting with Swansea City far from assured. Bailly, as Jose Mourinho’s first-choice centre-back alongside Marcos Rojo, is now our preferred option, at least until Chris Smalling or Phil Jones return to give the United boss rotation options.

Just as Jakupovic retains his rank among our goalkeeper standings, so Harry Maguire finds a place in our defenders listing.

Back-to-back goals have finally translated his consistent threat into points and, with favourable fixtures to come, starting with the Gameweek 34 home tie with Watford, the centre-back/right-back remains in our thinking. We surely hold and play Maguire at present.

Elsewhere, Laurent Koscielny supersedes Hector Bellerin as our Arsenal option following the Spaniard’s relegation to the bench on Monday night as part of Arsene Wenger’s shift to a 3-4-2-1.

Similarly, Jan Vertonghen is swapped in as our Spurs candidate. With Danny Rose believed to be approaching a return to contention, Ben Davies’ stock takes a blow, while Kyle Walker’s vulnerability to the Kieran Trippier option has him ignored. Vertonghen, at 5.7, is the cheapest route available. However, given the clamour for three attacking options in the Spurs ranks, he holds limited appeal.

Above the Spurs man, Bournemouth’s Charlie Daniels enjoys a renaissance. While Eddie Howe’s defence are far from reliable and are without a double Gameweek, they boast an outstanding schedule and Daniels’ attacking flair will perhaps be given greater freedom once safety is assured.

The Cherries left-back has three goals and as many assists this season and could prove a worthwhile differential purchase for those booking their wildcard for a forthcoming Gameweek.

FPLMarc Newcastle fan that spends far too much time thinking about FPL.

Completely stumped this week. Any advice appreciated:

    DDG (Heaton)
    Chambers, Mawson, Pieters (Brunt, Mustafi)
    Eriksen, Alli, Sanchez, King, Siggy,
    Lukaku, Kane (Llorente)

    0.4 ITB

Thoughts are, ditch Sanchez and Llorente for Ibra and Townsend, but then who to bench? Or Ibra and JWP ahead of later doubles. No WC left.

    A) Brunt and Carroll to Bailly and Negredo for -4

    B) Alonso, Carroll and Lukaku to Gibson, Negredo and Ibra for -8

    C) Brunt and Carroll to Gibson and Tekkers for -4.

For me my decisions for the following transfers is actually down to how I want my team to be in GW37 with Bench boost - what do you think? (no WC left)

    GW37 - 1), 2 or 3)? 🙂

    1) Gibson (Soton home), Hazard (DGW) and Benteke (Hull home)
    2) Clichy (DGW), Towsend (Hull home) and Ibra (DGW)
    3) Clichy (DGW), Hazard (DGW) and Benteke (Hull home) (-4)

You dont know if those players are gonna be fit for 37. But Yeah, there is a case for planning.

So: There is a good chance Boro is already relegated by 37 in which case Gibson may be rested for a youngster. Same goes for Palace. This reduces the appeal of these players for 37.

I think you gotta have Hazard, and Clichy may be a good shout although he can also use Kolarov there. I'm not sure I would want a City def tbh.

For a 37 Squad I would sell all my boro and Palace players. Palace has stronger form though, so if you are set on getting dgw 34 players that stay on Palace are better options, just.

Mourinho on rashford and why he took corners

"Marcus is trustable," Mourinho told MUTV.

"Even for the second goal, his free-kick was really high, impossible to score from a header because it was to what we call the third post - not the first or second post.

"But he's always tense, he's always fast, and you can always trust that [he will make] strong contact with the ball.

"The ball always goes with speed with him. With some other guys, the ball goes in the right spot but slower.

"Even if you win the duel in the air, it can be really difficult to score, so in this moment Marcus is one of the boys we trust.

"Because he's so young, he's able to keep developing that day after day; he's always with one of the assistant coaches trying to make it even better."

I can see Martial and Rashford starting against Burnley at the expense of Ibra

Mourinho is known the get reactions from his players and he's called Martial to prove him wrong. Burnley game might be the perfect game to do so. Agree ?

      https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/3364738/manchester-united-transfer-news-jose-mourinho-warns-out-of-favour-anthony-martial-to-prove-he-has-an-old-trafford-future/..

The next goal from Martial costs Manchester an additional 9 million pounds in fee to Monaco (25 goals for Manchester). If Mourinho doesn't see a future for him, that may prevent him for playing him.

Well, if he cares about the finances.

I'm on De Roon at the moment but worried if Walcott does start he may do something against a Leicester side who don't have much to play for in the league and might have Champions League hangover!

I think I'll play it safe though and get my 5 or so points with the hope of a rare goal 😀

      Negredo.

My reasoning: Benteke is the superior player, has better stats than Negredo but not that much better.
But Liverpool and Spurs are much stronger defensively than Bou and Sun, the difference is huge.

So imo the difference in fixtures are greater than the difference in the player.

      Does that make sense? 😛

If I did Lukaku-Ibra I would lose loads of money. Origi to Ibra would mean a downgrade of either Sanchez or Alonso (.1 short of Gibson if take Alonso out) Sanchez I don't see anyone worth swapping to as already have Zaha

I am in the same boat (once I've used my FT to do Lanzini > Townsend/Zaha).

I'm not willing to lose Lukaku for Ibra. So the 3 options I am toying with are (looking over 2 GWs, after which I'll WC):
        1. Sanchez and Origi > Coutinho and Ibra (so for -8). I reckon the best potential upside is about +17 points, taking account of hits and assuming I captain Ibra, but could result in 14 fewer points than sticking where I am. I think more likely than not it would cost me points, but the upside is potentially big (as is the downside).
        2. Origi > Benteke (-4). I think the possible upside is about 6 points. Most likely it'd be neutral or a small positive.
        3. Foster > DGD (-4). Probably similar to (2) above. Perhaps less risky but smaller potential upside.

I'm not convinced Ibra is a better captain option than Lukaku or Kane, given rotation risks, and there's probably no point in bringing him in unless I make him captain.

        Sanchez -> Son/Firmino/Coutinho
        Origi -> Ibra
providing you are using WC after GW 35 deadline.

I can see Origi's minutes getting limited as Sturridge is back and may even start. Sanchez plays Spurs away in GW 35 and Leicester in GW 34 which are tough games.

Yes, I did Negredo as it will force me into the Gabbi move with Negredo having a poor gw35 fixture

If you are set on Gabbiadini next week then I would play agressive and get Negredo in and out.

Which one lads? Using my WC for GW36 and BB for GW37. Thanks all.

      Heaton
      Chambers | Luiz | Davies
      Sanchez | Zaha | Alli | DeRoon | Cout
      Lukaku | Kane

      Origi | Baines | Mawson

      A) Origi > Negredo -4 (Use my AOA/Don't use AOA?)
      B) Origi + Mawson > Negredo + Bailey -8 (Use my AOA/Don't use AOA?)
      C) Origi + Heaton > Negredo + DDG -8 (Use my AOA/Don't use AOA)
      D) Heaton > DDG -4
      E) Save and play above team

Romero to play tonight. DDG 'rested'. Interesting. A sign PL the priority? Beat Burnley and Utd are only one point behind City (4th) going in to their game. I say this in the hope that makes Ibra more appealing to get in this week.

I'm still not sure to be honest. I'll probably FT Aguero to Ibra after tonight's match. I'm considering getting Bailly in with the extra cash. No mids or other strikers for me.

Similar boat, similar rank, but you have WC and higher TV. I'm thinking of Kun & Cameron (swa) to Ibra & Bailly (-4) but fully intended to save FT, twitching now.

Who would you rather for next two GW, before WC?

      Negredo: bou, SUN, MCI
      Benteke: liv, TOT, BUR

In my mind i prefer Negredo for this week (potential capt) but then Benteke is far better the following week

I see neither as particularly high scoring players but rate Benteke/CPL over Negredo/MID even with those fixtures.

      TC options:

      Valencia, Gibson, Zaha, Benteke, Ibrahimovic

who do you pick? or would you save for a SGW

Why not use it in Arsenal/Soton's DGW in 36?

Surely Sanchez a better option than all of the above?

haha I love the idea of triple captaining Gibson 😀

On a serious note - why would you even use it on a double gameweek if you are considering a Boro defender? Could have gone for Harry last week - we all knew he would score and likely get some form of bonus.

Sanchez is better in 36 - he will play twice and earn more for clean sheets and goals than striking options.

Lukaku -> Ibra for a hit? Or leave as it is? Any other hits worth taking? Current team -

      Hennessey*
      Gibson* - Valencia* - Alonso
      Zaha* - Son - Firmino - Coutinho
      Benteke* - Negredo* - Lukaku

      Heaton - Walcott - Mustafi - Jones*

1 FT, and thinking of using WC next GW. Still have AOA

      Pickford | Heaton
      Alonso | Walker | Holebas | Baines | Brunt
      King | Sanchez | Coutinho | Zaha | Alli
      Kane | Lukaku | Llorente

      A. Llorente > Negredo, play AOA and bench Baines, Brunt, Holebas
      B. Brunt > Gibson, bench Llorente, Baimes, Brunt
      C. Llorente + Brunt > Negredo + Gibson, play AOA and bench Baines, Holebas, Walker

      Start one:

      A) Pedro (SOU)
      B) Origi (CRY)

Fancy Pedro more but could possibly be rotated with Willian if he starts the FA Cup semi?

      Valdes
      Cahill, Valencia, Baines
      Zaha, Alli, Son, Coutinho
      Luk, Kun, Benteke (c)

      Heaton,- Davies, Yoshi, Obiang

What chance are there that Ibra start both the matches???

      Or

Will I go without Ibra??? This could make or break my season???

I think he'll start both. The result against Chelsea means we have a shot for top 4 in the league and so we have to go for it there as well as in the Europa. Also, Ibra is more suited to the Burnley game and I don't see him being rested in the derby. This is all my opinion though.

Safe thing to do is captain him then. Minimises loses.
