The ScoutCast – Episode 226 – Beached

Excess baggage checked in, deckchairs reserved and sun block applied – the Scoutcast team are all ready to hit the beach.

Smack in the middle of Gameweek 37, with points flowing from all angles, not even Hal Robson Kanu’s late goal can upset the pre-vacation mood.

Stringing five men across the midfield, Luke and Az join Jonty, Andy and myself for a bumper end of season episode as we tackle another volley of questions from you, the community.

We conduct a post-mortem on the flurry of chips, weigh up the Gameweek 38 punts, put together our final day Wildcard XI and take a look back on our own personal highs and lows of a topsy-turvy season.

After 128 minutes of that lot and sunstroke already setting in, we even forget to chat captains and transfers come the end, only to make amends later.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday night. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

Thought I'd happily secured my mini-league but just seen that the bloke in second has saved his triple-captain!

Lead by 87 points, there is no way that it can happen... is there?

A lot on here use top 10k as a good benchmark. As Red-lightning said yesterday that's like hitting 100 in cricket.

But there's lots of factors at play, sometimes you have such a bad start you find it hard to recover. Have a look at your rank a few weeks back and if you've improved that a lot be happy 🙂

I think if you are a regular here and look at your teams every week you should be at least 20k imo.

      20k - Good

      10k - Very good

      5k - Excellent

      1k - Absolutely tantalising

I think that's tough! I'm a veteran with 3 top 10k finishes and really give it time, but for whatever reason i've had a crap season & only at 150k now.

Look at Jonty & Granville this year too.

Pessimist in me says Azpi survived the rotation last week so he's for the chop this week.

Optimist says if he completes 90 minutes he will be one of only about half a dozen players to play every minute of the league season. Surely Conte will want to respect and honour that?

I'm leaning towards the optimistic outlook on him.

Now I see your logic for 100% Azpi Pep, thanks. I have 2FTs I don't *need* to use so upgrading to the safest defence possible is the best use of them I think.

Like I said it's just my opinion. Anyone can be 100% certain and still be wrong. Goodluck with the moves. Looks like a simple keeper switch for me just depending on what rival does

I'm in an odd situation in that I'm 13 points behind my ML leader (just me and him left really) so I would ordinarily go a bit differential, but we're also by chance facing off against each other in the final of our league cup competition, and I think my team is better, so I need to win the gameweek safely and also try and claw back the difference without going differential mad! Leveraging the superior TV and making upgrades rather than complete switches is the order of the day I think.

I was shocked when Eriksen didn't start against Leicester. I was surprised when Alli wasn't subbed on 75 minutes.

Eriksen played zero minutes, Alli played 90 minutes, Son and Dembele both subbed off ... looks like Alli to get some minutes off the bench on Sunday ?

Probability is that Alli will start ... but that was also the case for Eriksen last night too, and he has started every game except GW5 when he didn't play at all.

It looks like maybe Alli started the last game, Eriksen starts the next game and the other mids get some game time.

Maybe wishful thinking as an Eriksen owner, but if I had Alli I would sell for Coutinho

What is the secret of an amazing FPL season? I'm heading for my 10th consecutive top 100k finish and 4th top 10k finish, but I'm yet to break the top 1k - what turns a good season in to a great one?

    a) it's about getting consistently lucky
    b) eradicating the mistakes

From my side I think trying not to chop and change every week helps. Saving your FT and doing 2FT's every other week can really help. Also, watching loads of games of course is very important. I'd say from your options C is the closest, with some of A and B 🙂

I've been top 20k 7 seasons in a row now, 4 of them have been top 10k. Currently 2 points off top 1k.

It's about getting on the bandwagons early imo. Also watching a bit of actual football helps, you can spot something on Match of the day that isn't shown up in a players stats

Kids ruined my football watching time and concentration - you are right though, does make a massive difference. Hadn't appreciated how far up the pitch Bavies and Alonso were playing until you actually watch them play - bought both the first time I actually saw them play

          This.
I watched Chelsea and noticed Alonso not only getting forward A LOT but getting into the box and having several chances. I bought him straight away and a few weeks later he scored twice.
Been my signing of the season, along with Bavies who I got the minute Rose was injured and he's averaged 5-6 a week.
          Delighted with both of them

I think at a point it becomes about luck. As you rise through the ranks, the luck Vs skill ratio swings in lucks favour. Still skill involved but can't foresee Kane scoring 4 for example.

    5. Ruth_NZ
      • 9 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

I disagree that it's about luck. Yes, getting very lucky can get you in the top 1k if you are also competent and diligent but to be a competent manager who has the occasional lucky season - is that enough of an aim?

Eradicating mistakes is more important as long as you define what a mistake is correctly. Captaining the player that scores less isn't necessarily a mistake. Sanchez rather than Kane this week, for example, wasn't a mistake, it was a sound decision. But basing your DGW strategy around Gabbiadini when it was (should have been) clear that Puel would rotate at Southampton? That was a mistake. So really it's about being honest and self-critical in order to improve your decision-making and reduce bias.

Apart from that I think you have to be brave. The top 10k are herd-like in many ways. They will say they aren't but they mostly are. Not necessarily in terms of copying others (though some do, they call it "the template") but in terms of thinking and playing in a similar way to their rivals.

The trick is to try to spot when the herd is making a mistake (FFS is a very good place to observe what the trends are) and to deliberately create variance on those occasions. Reducing variance (captaining the top of the poll, considering ownership and effective ownership when making player decisions for example) has its place and the top 10k generally do a lot of that. But a key route to beating them is to pick your moments and then to be brave. If your judgement is good enough and your luck isn't terrible (and as long as you have the basic competence in the first place) then you have a good chance of a top 1k finish.

FPL has changed. It used to be that competence and diligence would get you into the top 5k. VR is a good example. But with the dissemination of information and knowledge having become as wide as it now is then you need an edge. And that edge is your judgement and your bravery in exercising it. That's my viewpoint anyway.

Doubtless there will now be a queue of hypocrites shooting slings and arrows that have nothing to do with this post. Be my guest, lads. 🙂

PS - just to define my terms... By "top 10k" I don't mean those that are in the top 10k in GW10. I mean those that will be in it after GW38. That's why FFS is so useful for someone that sets out to beat them. Because there's no better place to read what those managers are thinking and are likely to do. Couple that with the excellent FPL Discovery site (thank you Smarty Pants!) and that's your basic espionage system in place. 😉

So, in summary, look at the forum, but ignore the forum and trust your own judgement?
I disagree that competence and luck is a bad aspiration... in my 11 seasons I've made some excellent but unlucky calls that ruin a season

I must say that Ruth_NZ summarises what it takes to get a great OR very well indeed.

If you ask me the question on what it took to get into or around the top 1k so many times, I would struggle to put my finger on it. But reading the above post has highlighted to me how I have done it. So I agree with his post spot on.

A defining example of being brave for me this season was GW19, when everyone said I should get Costa in for Kane after Costa had returned from suspension, and Kane had blanked in 2 easy home games. However, I had a big feeling Kane was about to explode, and the rest is history. It's these moments when going with your gut can be very rewarding.

I would also add to Ruth's post to say that success is also determined by sticking to your natural style of play, whether it be Dullard or Maverick. Both styles can do well, but FPL managers tend to do better when they play to their strengths. I tend to be dullard with the odd maverick moment. Jonty has stated many times that he struggled this season when he tried to be a Maverick, when he is a natural Dullard.

        I hope that help 🙂

Does anyone else think the chips are too powerful when combined with DGWs? I'm in a couple of minileagues where things have been pretty competitive all season, but where an order had formed that reflected good choices, consistency, calculated risks and so on. After GW35 I was 40 points behind the leader in one league and 72 behind in the other. After the last two weeks, using my wildcard and benchboost, I now lead both, the second one by (coincidentally) 72 points. A 144 point swing in two gameweeks is excessive and whilst I've benefitted hugely from it, it does seem out of balance. My rival built up a deserved lead over 35 weeks of better choices than mine, but thanks to my chip and captain choices, I've rendered his season's work obsolete. I have built a better team value than him over the season that meant I could afford a better WC team for GW36-38, but actually, my more expensive alternatives to some of his players didn't perform anyway (Hazard, Alonso, Gabbiadini).

Should the TC and BB chips be dropped, or perhaps their use be limited to "normal" gameweeks? It just seems to me that the swings in minileagues this week have been excessive.

I think the chips were introduced as a gimmick to try and keep more players active and interested throughout the season. Preferred the game without them personally.

Me too. They've worked beautifully for me since they were introduced but I still don't think they're the right thing for the game. A few casuals in my work leagues are pretty disenchanted that it all gets decided in these DGWs. If anything, I wonder if the chips will deter the more casual player?

Bench boost really doesn't yield that many points from what I've seen. I got 172 points this week and my bench contributed only 18 points.

TriggerLips has a good take on it:

      https://www.triggerlips.com/index.php/2017/05/18/the-chips-are-they-doing-their-job/

I agree with him - rather than enhancing the game they're making a lot of people go for the same tactic. I know we have some posters who have used the BB to good effect elsewhere in the season, but regardless, I think it's led to a lot of people doing the same thing and working against what it was probably designed to do.

I think that the chips have made the game more of a lottery which is a shame.

Sure it's possible to get a great score in DGWs, particularly GW37 as several have mentioned in reply. However for every person who has made the correct transfers/picks there are others who made completely rational picks which have crashed and burned along with their OR and ML campaigns.

Not sure what the answer is as we all enjoy the 2 WCs...perhaps it is the BB combined with the DGW which made people feel that they had to maximise DGWers when 11/12 was the optimum?

I managed to scrape 155 points but if it were not for 'Arry then my rival would have won hands down with the likes of 10 point Redmond, who came off the bench to score and 9 point Capoue against Chelsea, due to a JT aberration.

    A) Alli - Cout, keep AoA

    C) Alli - Cout, bench Gabbi, play Yoshida & Benalouane without AoA

50 per page. Search for page 100 say. If you get a result, search 200. 300. Etc.

When there's no teams listed start halving the difference between that page search and the previous page search and you'll get there. Shouldn't take more than 10 searches max!!

    Morning!
I guess this is a bit sad but my cash league is on the line so...

    Me: Caballero Pick
    Alonso Vert Monreal Stephens Holgate
    Sanchez Haz Sane Albrighton JWP
    Kane Jesus Gabbi

    Him: Cech Caballero
    Holding Yoshida Stephens Holgate Mariappa
    Sanchez KDB Redmond Pedro Capoue
    Kane Costa Jesus

Both with 1 FT and me with a twenty point lead.

The things I should worry about I guess are if Soton and Arsenal keep a clean sheet and KdB, Costa and/or Pedro explode. Otherwise I should be quite ok I think.

Been thinking about doing something like Haz and Gabbi to Cout and Giroud for a hit. Or should I perhaps play it safe and cover his KdB through selling Hazard for him (which would mean I'd have to sell Caballero or Sane for a hit also)?

What would you good folks suggest?

This is weirdly close to my situation.
I have a 20 point lead on my rival - I have Kane, Sanchez, Sterling and Hazard
He KDB, Jesus, Costa and Sane.

I'm debating a -4 hit to cover his Jesus and get Coutinho but it means shipping Hazard, which I'm reluctant to do.
