Scout Report – Ederson

Manchester City’s second major foray into the transfer market – following the arrival of Monaco midfielder Bernardo Silva – saw Benfica goalkeeper Ederson join for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £35 million.

The 23-year-old has penned a six-year contract at the Etihad and will join up with his new team-mates on July 1.

Speaking to the club’s official website, director of football Txiki Begiristain was fulsome in his praise for the new signing:

“We are delighted to bring Ederson to Manchester City. He is one of the best young goalkeepers in the Europe, and he is an important addition to the squad for next season and the coming seasons. He is young, has all the qualities you could want as a top-class goalkeeper, and I think he’ll fit in really well to our squad.”

The History

Ederson began his youth career at home town club Sao Paulo FC in Brazil, playing one season, before moving to Portugal in 2009 at the age of 16 to link up with Benfica.

He spent two years as a junior with the Portuguese giants before leaving to join Second Division side Ribeirao in 2011.

He played 29 matches for the second-tier outfit and then moved to Primeira Liga side Rio Ave in the summer of 2012.

During the 2013/14 campaign, Ederson established himself in the first-team and by the end of the 2014/15 season had amassed 37 league appearances for the club.

In June 2015, Ederson returned to Benfica, signing a five-year contract with the then Portuguese champions.

He was initially the back-up for the experienced Julio Cesar before taking advantage of an injury suffered by the former Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper to play the final 10 league matches as Benfica secured a third successive league title.

Ederson emerged as the first-choice custodian last season, making 27 league appearances. He also featured seven times in the Champions League as Benfica secured a domestic treble.

He has made five appearances for Brazil at U23 level but is still waiting to make his senior debut, although he has been an unused substitute in their last two World Cup qualifiers.

The Prospects

Arriving at the Etihad as the world’s most expensive goalkeeper, Ederson will be expected to emerge as City’s first-choice stopper.

Last summer, new City boss Pep Guardiola quickly decided that Joe Hart was ill-suited to operate as a ball-playing sweeper-keeper, instead deciding to spend £15.4 million plus add-ons for Barcelona’s Claudio Bravo.

But the Chilean’s poor shot-stopping, and his failure to adjust to the physical demands of the Premier League saw Willy Caballero end the campaign as City’s first-choice keeper.

But Caballero has since been released by the club, leaving Ederson and Bravo to battle it out next term.

Ederson enjoyed a hugely successful campaign last term, conceding the fewest number of goals (12) in the Primera Liga. He also kept 17 clean sheets, with only Porto’s Iker Casillas (18) recording more.

Bravo, meanwhile, managed just six shut-outs from his 22 league appearances and conceded 26 goals.

Looking into some statistics from last season, Ederson averaged 4.08 saves before conceding, compared to 1.08 for Bravo, while his average of 42.5 minutes per save is also superior to the Chilean’s 59.6. Certainly, then, the numbers suggest that Ederson’s shot-stopping ability should improve the clean sheet prospects for all members of the City backline.

Yet when you consider that City conceded fewer shots (301) than any side last season and allowed just 106 shots on target – only Chelsea boast a better record – the lack of potential save points could be a deterrent for some.

In terms of passing accuracy, Caballero (76.4%) and Bravo (72.5%) were the top two among FPL keepers with at least five starts last term as a result of Guardiola’s possession-based approach.

Although Ederson mustered 65.3% by comparison, this was partly due to the Brazilian’s average distribution length over 90 minutes being 41 metres, compared to 22 for Bravo. Indeed, his impressive passing from deep meant the new stopper averaged 7.0 successful long balls to the Chilean’s 4.5.

And Ederson has revealed he is comfortable playing in a more advanced role with plenty of involvement in build-up play, suggesting that he may be able to meet Guardiola’s expectations from the off.

Bravo was handed a price tag of 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) last season when he was expected to be the first-choice, and that’s also likely to be the valuation placed on Ederson this time around.

That will put him line with several other premium goalkeepers, although City’s leading defenders are expected to set us back at least 6.0.

Vincent Kompany could be worth the extra outlay if he remains fit for the season kick-off. He averaged 7.7 points per match over the last six Gameweeks.

Additionally, with City in the market for full-backs – they have been strongly linked with moves for Tottenham Hotspur’s Kyle Walker, Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand and Monaco’s Benjamin Mendy – their new signings are also likely to boast plenty of upside due to their attacking potential.

Ederson won’t arrive in Manchester as the finished article, but he’s clearly been identified as a player who Guardiola can help mould into a world class operator over the coming seasons.

After improving significantly as a defensive unit upon the return to fitness of Kompany, registering shut-outs in four in their last seven matches, City defenders could boast plenty of appeal given their ability to return points at both ends of the pitch.

Ederson has the attributes to succeed at the Etihad, but given his age and the fact City will have plenty of new faces in defence, it could take some time for all to gel as a unit.

Premium options from the more settled defences such as Chelsea and Spurs may prove safer bets when formulating our Gameweek 1 squads.

But Guardiola’s men will be one of the major title favourites, and members of their backline could certainly thrive over the course of the season.

Shouldn't. If he's at Soton while the game is launched, he'll be priced accordingly. If he then moves to a bigger club, we're lucky.

    Manchester City’s defence

Who thinks City’s defence is worth investing in next season?

With Edersen joining they may finally have found the goalkeeper to match Pep Guardiola’s vision for his side.

Also with with five clean sheets in his last seven starts Kompany could be a great option.

With only Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United conceding less goals than Manchester City last time out surely their defence deserves a look in?

    http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/12198/

Or is the threat of rotation across the back four and the likely high price tag of Edersen putting you off the City rearguard?

Kompany has been so important on his return but you have to factor in rotation - pep has to win something this season.

Pep also doesn't like just winning he likes winning and then going for goal difference.

For me it's an avoid and spend the money on united/Spurs/Chelsea, and go for a forward instead

Rotation threat, Kompany injury record and City being behind Utd, Che and Tot putting me off.

Arguably we will have one or two premium defenders. Would rather use those slots on Chelsea and/or Utd/Spurs.

City have a history of starting seasons well, so I'm definately considering their assets. More in terms of attack than defense, although you raise a good point. Do you think Kompany's price has any chance of dropping from 6.0? I'd say Kompany is fairly nailed out of all their defenders, his injury history worries me though...

    4. UnitedFan

They'll need to sign another CB for me to consider them. Kompany obviously isn't reliable to stay fit that long. That leaves Otamendi and Stones. Otamendi has been hot and cold and Stones isn't great. It also depends on how many premium defenders you want. If like me, you're eyeing up one, then there are other premium defences I'd invest in for that one spot ahead of City.

Maybe. Didn't see a real desire to lock down defensively from Pep. Seems more interested in just outscoring teams with goals at both ends like Klopp than blanking teams like Mou, Poch and Conte.

No goalkeeper in the history of the game could save ~5 1v1s a game on a regular basis. I sincerely doubt Ederson is going to change that. Maybe an attacking one at a reasonable price? Certainly not for CSs.

Since when does a city keeper face 5 1v1 per game? Bravo hardly had a single shot per game to save when he was in goal? Granted they do concede big chances when a chance used conceded but one big save should be enough for a cs most gws.

If their opening performance is like that of a few years back, then sure I would consider City assets in my defense. Based on how Kompany finished last season, he heads my list of players. The only caveat, his durability as long as he can remain healthy I think he is the best option (now) for City.

Still with the transfer period young and much speculation surrounding who will come join Ederson at the back. As for Ederson, I am not considering him at this point, the save points play too important of a role. All speculation at this point, but those are my early thoughts.

Our U21 manager is so afraid... to pick such a defensive starting 11 in a must-win opening game is a sign of weakness. It appears that he completly ignores his players' form. Some of them hardly played any football last season. Honestly, I would be suprised if we average more than a goal/game. Invest in defence, if at all

I'm thinking of ignoring defensive rotations and going with three attack minded defenders who would play ever game next season.

Is this too much to spend on my D ?

Alonso (expecting him to be 7.0)

    2 x 4.0 (as permanent bench fodder)

I tend not to put too much stock in supposedly hijacked deals but two that stand to mind were Pedro and Martial.

Pretty sure only 10 minutes after Monaco confirmed United's bid for Martial Chelsea then lodged a bid. That one above all else stood out to me as them purely going after him because United had.

some are well documented such as Mikel, Fabregas and Robben. The other was Ballack

Mikel was a fiasco but that was very much so his agent and the player himself (that FIFA did nothing about it given the deal being supposedly done was dodgy). I always felt that was his agent on the hunt for more money tbh.

My definition of hijacking is buying a player specifically to screw over another team, not because you also need that player. The likes of Robben and Fabregas seemed to me as cases where both teams wanted the players and Chelsea made significant use of them when they signed. That's just business, Chelsea negotiated better and sold their projects well.

Compare to Pedro, who Chelsea hadn't any interest in until United entered talks, bought him and rotated him a lot for most of the first season. Similarly, they went after Martial as soon as United bid when they had absolutely no use for him unless they planned to bench Hazard or Costa for him (lol). They had matched United's offer, so they actually were going all out to spend ridiculous money on a player they'd bench all season.

As for Ballack, he hadn't even had any meeting with Fergie. I really couldn't blame him, it wasn't like they were close to a deal.

Suppose it just comes down to how we define hijacking.

to me, hijacking is when a deal looks likely, and then another club comes in at the last minute. I.e. Salah, Firmino and Willian

            1. Somalion
              • 14 Years
              6 years, 10 months ago

I guess it's just different opinions then. I also believe it has to be last minute, but the likes of Ballack or Robben or Fabregas wouldn't have been hijacked in my view.

I would tend to see it as if one club bids for a player and another side who had absolutely no established interest in that player then comes immediately in for them, that's hijacking. If both are expressing interest, I can't really say it's a deal hijacked as much as it is one team forcing the other one's hand into either bidding or not. Then it'll come down to who is offering more than the other (be it wages, the project, the money they're willing to pay to the player's current club).

Essien was another if i remember correctly.. This was around the time Chief Executive Peter Kenyon left United to for Chelsea and then offered more of Abramovich's money to the targets Fergie had given him a list of at United

Essien and Robben were the two most contentious ones as they were names Kenyon gave to Chelsea when he switched (and was on gardening leave)

In the early 2000s some Chelsea scouts were literally following United's scouts abroad. Fergie mentioned this in his newest book. Essien, Drogba and Cech were some of the names.

As GW1 is the only week you can play effectively a WC and a chip at the same time (and assuming the rules/chips don't change), is it worth considering AOA for GW1 with 3 x 4.0 defenders and 1 x 4.0 GK, and then a GW2 WC?

    1. Ziro
      • 9 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

If it comes off, it will be a success. (duh)

But better to keep it just in case a GW comes up where:
      1. One of your defenders does not play anymore, AND
      2. One of your defenders is injured, AND
      3. Another one of your defenders is suspended for 1 match,AND
      4. You want to use your FT on an attacker because 2 of your defenders will be back by next GW.

1/4 of the season to be played between end of Nov and start of Jan. I certainly wouldn't use it early on just for the sake of it.

        This too.

It's not "for the sake of it" though - it means you can spend 86.0 on 11 players specifically for one GW only - surely that has some implied value?

I don't like the idea of making a plan that has no room for deviations. If the GW1 template does well you'll be setting yourself far behind. AOA is best used when you know your 3rd attacker/5th midfielder are capable of scoring.

It could pay off since Chelsea, Palace, Tottenham, Arsenal and Everton have good fixtures for GW1 but not that great fixtures otherwise. Those teams have lots of known quantities that's good for a season start.

2015/16 season I was going to play AOA chip in GW1, but I bottled it - left Mahrez's 15 points on the bench.
2016/17 season I did play it in GW1 and Redmond, who would have been benched, scored 10 points, Stones 2 points stayed on the bench.

Yes, I've checked them all on the Members Ticker.
(I assume that the Members Ticker lists Homes and Aways correctly).

Quite a few of them have a pair of non-rotations in GWs 1-2 as well as another pair later.
Perhaps the non-rotations in GW1-2 might have been overlooked?

Don't West Ham start with 3 aways, not 3 homes?

If the venues for both WHU v SOU fixtures are reversed, that would reduce WAT/WHU and BOU/SOU from 38 to 36, and WBA/WHU from 34 to 32.

So, assuming that the two matches between West Ham and Southampton reverse their venues, that would leave:
                  38: ARS/TOT, BRI/HUD, BUR/CHE, CRY/STO, EVE/LIV, LEI/NEW, MCI/MUN and SWA/WBA.
                  36: BOU/SOU, SOU/WBA and WAT/WHU.
                  34: ARS/HUD, BOU/SWA, BRI/NEW, BRI/TOT, CRY/MCI, CRY/EVE, HUD/LEI, LIV/STO, MUN/STO and SWA/WAT.

Everton have made an official offer of €18m [£15.8m] for Milan’s M’Baye Niang, according to reports in Italy.
Not the most exciting replacement for Lukaku...he didnt do much at Watford last season either.

Klaassen is more of a Barkley replacement. He could be a decent FPL option if priced right.Scored a good few goals for Ajax.

he probably played half a dozen times as an emergency striker, but not for a good couple of years, and he wasn't great there.

Thought he did quite well in a bad Watford side and I doubt Everton would replace Lukaku with Niang alone.

Only WBA defender who is likely to be 4.5 is Nyom

I'll try to start with as many players from top teams as possible, will probably go for Southampton defender over WBA

    7. bojack

The narrow attraction of WBA is their scoring defenders. They don't keep that many clean sheets, squad is very average and Pulis doesn't seem to be able to attract much in the market.

Probably Foster + Dawson. Nyom instead of Dawson if the former is 5.0.

Probably none. I don't mind WBA as a club but when Pulis starts that "not football" lark I' done with them...and I don't care about the CS's.

Oddly they actually looked quite good for a while last season when they attacked, and they he went back to Plan A.

Depends if Brunt is still classified as a defender which I doubt.

Foster was on par with Heaton during the start of last term, 25 pts, 2 CS and 3 bonus, bettered by Heaton by just 3 points. Showed WBA defense looked good at times, but fell of the pace of other budget buys as the season rolled on. Based on the SoS, I would consider Foster to start the season pending pricing.

      1. FPL Kangaroo
        • 6 Years

I'm going with Foster, Myhill & one of Dawson/Nyom/Evans for GW1.
I'm also assuming Brunt will be classified as a Mid.
Fixtures are just too good to ignore.
Havn't seen much mention of Phillips on here?
He will be the first bandwagon of the season I reckon.

  26. stat
      6 years, 10 months ago

This team I put together will probably a bit more than 100m (100.5m if my price predictions are correct) but here goes:

      Heaton (5m) / Foster (4.5m)
      PvA (5m) / Yoshida (5m) / Valencia (6m) / T. Smith (4.5m) / Dawson (4.5m)
      Alli (10m) / Sane (8m) / Coutinho (8m) / Zaha (6.5m) / Mooy (5m)
      Kane (12.5m) / Morata (9.5m) / Austin (6.5m)

I could always downgrade Austin and Valencia if it turns out to be too expensive. And also if Morata doesn't join Man Utd I could get Jesus instead.

          For those playing U-21 fantasy.

This is our(Swedens) likely starting xi after todays training session.
4-4-2 as always(at least the 70's when we shifted getting influences from England instead of Germany, yes you may laugh out loud now)
I watch or have watched quite a few of these players on a weekly basis as they either play or have played for my hometown team before going abroad(I'll mark these with 'MHT' instead of writing my hometown team, which is IFK Norrköping.

          Goal: Cajtoft

          Def: Wahlqvist(MHT), Larsson, Dagerstål(MHT), Lundqvist

          Mid: Tibbling, Olsson(MHT), Hallberg, Fransson(MHT)

          For: Cibicki, Engvall

A few words about some of the players.
One player from our championship winning team(2015) are still around and that is Tibbling(FC Groningen but rumoured to one of the big dutch clubs). He is short, a bit chubby but a fantastic player then and now.
Got great work ethic mixed with a bag full of tricks, capable of winning a game on his own. One to at least watch even if not owning.

Goalies. Strange pricing in the game as it's gonna be either Cajtoft or the super duper cheap Erlandsson that starts. A month ago I could have sworn Erlandsson were a shoe in, seems that might have changed after our last friendly.

          Defence.
Wahlqvist is the stand out option, I see him play every week as he has not yet gone abroad(which he will either during summer or when our league ends in autumn). Had an amazing development since our league started in April. Had been very stable defensively a season before but suddenly he scores goals and make assists. Great shot, great crosses, good set pieces. Gonna be in our big boys national team any day now.

Dagerstål. A slugger. Also got a good shot, good headers can also play in midfield. Probably not fantasy material though as Wahlqvist is such a force.

Midfield. Olsson. The assist king. Left Norrköping for Arsenal in 2013. In 2014 he left for danish outfit Midtjylland. Now back in Sweden where he chose to play for Stockholm club AIK(cursewords). Dominated in the qualification but seems to have regressed since moving back to Sweden. Very offensive, great passing.
Fransson. Left Norrköping januari 2016 after being a major players for us when we won our top league for the first time in 26 years, went to Basel where he plays on and off. More of a defensive mid but seems to become picked to partly play on the left. Very intelligent, good passing and a bit of a slugger. Not likely to be fantasy material.
Hallberg. Made his top league debut for Kalmar FF in Sweeden at the age of 16. Then bought by Udinese but after a few appearances he has been out on loan to Norweigan top league club Vålerengen, then to top league club Hammarby(Sweden) and now back in Kalmar on loan from Udine.
A bit of a speed bullit, can break down at any point. Fit he is, just as having been bought by a great talent factory such as Udinese calcio suggests, a decent enough talent. Irrational and a good eye for a goal a bit like a 'jack in the box'.

Forwards. Engvall. Owned by Bristol City(screwed by Abraham). Were a big part of our bronze medal winning U-17 team in the world chamionships in 2013 where he scored 3 goals. Now loaned out from Bristol to Djurgården in Sweden where he, after 12 gw's, are joint top scorer with 6 goals. Should mention he was out injured for a few games. Good classic forward. Not the big strong kind but quick and finds good ways to punnish defenders. Runs, runs and then he run even more.
          Cibicki.
Had a choice, play for Poland or Sweden, chose wisely Sweden. Playing for Malmö(think he got to play some champions league with them. Spent last year on loan in another Swedish top league club(Jönköping) as the competition in malmö were tough for a young player. Evolved there, in a big way, so this season he is back in Malmö(gonna play CL qualification) and are a starter. 4 goals in 12 matches, started season brillian but has faded the last gw's. Have brought on attention from BIG clubs and are sure to have a bright future abroad or at Malmö. Irrational and tricky, looks thin and week though

That is it. Will make a follow up post under this later with a few of our subs, one in particulae is very interesting and of course he is playig in my hometown club.
