Scout Notes – Pre Season

Huddersfield Town new boys Steve Mounie and Tom Ince score for the Terriers to boost their CVs for the role of budget options in our Fantasy squads.

Here’s the latest pre-season notes.

Bury 1 Huddersfield Town 3

Club record signing Steve Mounie opened his account for Huddersfield Town as the Premier League new boys came from behind to win their second pre-season encounter.

The Benin international, signed from French side Montpellier, was handed a tap-in by Chris Lowe’s fine cross before goals from fellow new signing Tom Ince and last season’s top scorer Elias Kachunga sealed the deal for the Terriers.

Ince’s strike was his second consecutive goal in pre-season as the midfielder, priced at 6.0 and owned by 2.5% of Fantasy Premier League managers, enjoyed another rise in stock.

Midfielder Kachunga – scorer of 12 goals in the Championship campaign – remains on the radar after his converted spot-kick.

His 6.0 price tag in midfield could prove tempting in light of Huddersfield’s kind opening run (pal, NEW, SOT, wham, LEI, bur). However, he is unlikely to take penalty duties from Australian Aaron Mooy, who missed out on Sunday with his pre-season break extended following participation in the Confederations Cup.

Terriers coach David Wagner employed his standard 4-2-3-1 formation, but the absence of no fewer than nine first-team regulars rather diluted the relevance of the encounter.

Tommy Smith (foot), Jon Gorenc Stankovic (ACL) and Michael Hefele (Achilles) were joined on the sidelines by goalkeeper Joel Coleman (knock), Joe Lolley (groin) and Nahki Wells (ankle).

Mark Hudson, who was on a coaching course, and new signing Mathias Jorgensen, who was attending his sister’s wedding, were also unavailable.

Collin Quaner recovered from a knock to make a second-half appearance and set up Ince’s goal, while left-back Scott Malone drew the foul that led to Kachunga’s penalty conversion.

Huddersfield Town XI to 60 minutes: Lossl; Lowe, Schindler, Cranie, Scannell; Billing, D Williams; Bunn, Palmer, van La Parra; Mounie.

Huddersfield Town XI after 60 minutes: Schofield; Malone, Schindler (Edmonds-Green 75), Cranie (Kane 75), J Williams; Whitehead, Payne (Hogg 75); Ince, Kachunga, Quaner; Depoitre.
Sub Not Used: O’Brien.

A reminder that all the friendly results and key Scout Notes are being captured here, in our Pre-Season Guide.

Following the above question then. Which would you rather?

    A) Foster, Francis, KDB
    B) DDG, Ake, Sane

Hmmm maybe. United def definitely trumps WBM imo. Ake worth the .5 over Francis also according to most on previous page.

I'm less confident in A - KDB will outscore Sane, but perhaps by only 30 points or so. I think DDG and Ake can comfortably score more than that - Ake's set piece threat is an invaluable characteristic, and perhaps Francis' game time will be less assured this time in a 4 at the back.

Apropos of nothing (and maybe some boredom) I was looking through Mourinho's top league goalscorers to see if Lukaku is worth it in a team managed by what is considered a defensive manager.

In the 6 full seasons he has managed in the PL only twice has his main goalscorer reached 20 goals in a league season; Drogba in 06/07 and Costa in 14/15.

Are you convinced that Lukaku will get enough service and be clinical enough to put away the chances he has or do you suddenly see Mou with an attacking team providing him with plenty of chances?

The entire record is as follows:

    03/04 Porto – Benni McCarthy – 20 goals
    04/05 Chelsea – Lampard – 13
    05/06 Chelsea – Lampard – 16
    06/07 Chelsea – Drogba – 20
    08/09 Inter – Ibrahimovic – 25
    09/10 Inter – Milito – 22
    10/11 Madrid – Ronaldo - 40
    11/12 Madrid – Ronaldo – 46
    12/13 Madrid – Ronaldo – 34
    13/14 Chelsea – Hazard – 14
    14/15 Chelsea – Costa – 20
    16/17 Man U – Ibrahimovic – 17

Anyone else looking at Liverpool defensive alternatives to Milner? Although pens are a big attraction, Clyne and Matip 1m cheaper, as is Van Dijk if that happens. Their defensive record isn't actually as bad as you'd think either... if they do get Van Dijk, they could actually have quite a decent looking back line.

Yes. That's now. He wanted to leave in Jan. Wanted to go to China. If you believe the papers. And as for not playing well for the 2nd half of the season he wasn't even dropped when he was playing "not so well".

Costa has wanted to go back to AM almost since the day he signed for Chelsea. He still barely speaks any English, which tells you how interested he is.

Conte has gone about it badly (although he probably didn't expect Costa to go public with their communication). But Chelsea will be well rid to be honest.

Conte on Costa in Jan "Yeah... Diego is a really important player. The situation is very clear, he is very happy to stay with us and fight for the title. I think (he will stay for some time). I see him every day and his commitment and behaviour. " Plus not dropping him despite terrible 2nd half of the season. Shows he's not disliked. I think Conte wants a different kind of striker.

Not really. Costa has been stirring this up himself, riling the manager deliberately and so on. If he were really committed to Chelsea they'd have given him a new contract. He wants out.

As a matter of interest, Batshuayi scored 23 goals for Marseille in 2015/16, exactly the same number that Lacazette scored for Lyon that season. Chelsea already have a very good striker in place, even without Costa. Maybe not top drawer (yet) but very high potential.

It is all about the blend, this Season. My cheapest midfielder is Fraser. I also think that it is worth spending money on Heaton & Foster, this year:

                WBA/BUR: BOU 182 . WBA 62 . STK 211 . CPL 109 . WHM 102 . HUD 165 . WAT 330

3 light blues, and a dark blue. Can't say fairer than that.

Also, I have gone mad on corners:

                http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/13487/

Keep going down 'til you find the second stripy midfielder. 😉

                  Cheers.

As a matter of interest, last season was the first ever (as far as I can tell) when the average ppg the top FPL teams achieved from GKs was better than the average ppg they got from defenders. People may have missed how the BPS re-jigs have favoured GKs over defenders.

Mind you, that was partly because last season was the worst in living memory for clean sheets. GKs have saves to fall back on. Defenders don't. But the CS ratio has been falling season-by-season for 4 or 5 years now so there's no reason to think this season will be any better.

Rasmey can easily change to Tadic or Redmond which will allow me to upgrade Rodriguez to Gayle. I'll see how they perform in pre-season.

Rlc as a 4th mid helps my defence so much but it feels way too risky..?

Until he has a 1st team place then he is a risk. Carroll is another option.

Then yes too risky until we know he's a starter.

    Hi everyone 🙂

I won my league easily last year (I think I won it by around 250 points!), however I still found myself getting frustrated by my overall rank and was frustrated whenever a player I didn't own did well. So, this FPL season I am going to do a challenge where I will not own any of the players who play for a club who finished in the top 6 of the league last year - it means I will not be concerned about my overall rank and I will see how I get on in my league.

Just wondering if any of you have any good ideas for any players? Thank you 🙂

    My current team is:

    Forster Heaton

    PVA Bertrand Baines Cresswell Dawson

    Siggurdson Tadic Lanzini Chadli Ritchie

    Benteke Defoe Rooney

      Cedric
      Stanislas
And I'd look real hard at Mahrez/Vardy with no Europe

    RMT

    Foster/Elliot
    Trippier/Lindelof/Yedlin/Mee/Hunemeier
    Alli/KdB/Fabregas/Phillips/RLC
    Kane/Lukaku/Gayle

Is defence too weak? Can't find the extra 0,5 for Cedric

KDB is 0.5 more than Coutinho who has 7 goals more, playing c. 650 minutes less.

KdB actually costs 1 m more than Cout (10 vs 9). A little worried that Cout will play deeper this year, and I feel that City attack will do well this year

Playing deeper is Coutinho's best position

Countinos biggest problem though is he scores one goal and they bring out the cotton wool, sub him off and tuck him into bed

when he is up and running.

RMT please, with some info on what you'd change:
    Hennessey-Elliot
    Ake-Maguire-Monreal-Smith-Cedric
    Pogba-Sane-Zaha-Eriksen-Carrick
    Lacazette-Lukaku-Afobe

    Thanks.
